Huayi Brothers Co-Founder and Chairman Wang Zhongjun has resigned from his post as executive chairman of the board at Huayi Tencent Entertainment, the latter company announced Friday. He will step down next Tuesday because he “needs to focus on other matters,” it said.
Wang will be vacating his Huayi Tencent roles as executive director and chairman of the board, as well as his positions as both chairman and member of the company’s nomination and corporate governance committees. The company said there are “no disagreements” between Wang and the rest of its board of directors.
Yuen Hoi Po, Huayi Tencent’s CEO and executive director, will temporary assume Wang’s responsibilities. A new chairman will be elected “as soon as possible” to fill Wang’s role.
His resignation nonetheless augurs poorly for the declining Huayi Brothers, China’s oldest and leading private production company. Despite having produced “The Eight Hundred,...

Former Warner Bros film chief Jeff Robinov is reportedly in talks with China’s Huayi Brothers Media Corp to secure financing for a new venture that will produce five films a year.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the Beijing-based studio is among a group of Us and international investors that are close to finalising a deal to finance the company’s films.
Robinov is also expected to close a deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment to cover marketing and distribution of the slate. He has also been in talks with Twentieth Century Fox. A financing deal with Russian-born billionaire Len Blavatnik is now thought to be off the cards.
Huayi has been in talks with Us studios and execs for several years and is seen as a likely contender to make a big Hollywood investment. So far, none of the new generation of Chinese studios has made a significant investment in Us production, although Wanda Group...

Former Warner Bros. chief Jeff Robinov is negotiating to create a company that would produce roughly five movies annually, largely with money from Beijing-based Huayi Brothers Media, people familiar with the plan said Wednesday. Huayi Brothers, a publicly traded film production and record label founded 20 years ago by brothers Wang Zhongjun and Wang Zhonglei, is in discussions with other financiers who would also bankroll Robinov, whose films would likely be distributed by Sony. Insiders say a deal for as much as $300 million from a variety of sources -- some from investors in the U.S. and some from investors abroad --

Update: The announcement was made today in Beijing by Tull and Huayi Brothers CEO Wang Zhongjun, and Huayi Brothers President, Wang Zhonglei. Legendary East’s films will be developed as co-productions with Huayi Brothers, who will distribute the movies in China. Distribution in all other parts of the globe is anticipated to be handled by Warner Bros Pictures, because of its longstanding relationship with Legendary Entertainment. Legendary East initially plans on producing one to two event-style films for worldwide audiences annually beginning in 2013. The announcement also marks Legendary Entertainment’s formal entrance into the Chinese marketplace. According to Tull's statement, Legendary East will be led by an experienced management team with significant experience working with Hollywood studios as well as with Western and Chinese entertainment companies. News of note from our Most Innovative Companies, including Hulu, Netflix, Huayi Brothers, and Google.
Hulu: Hulavision, the similarly-titled streaming tech company, is suing both NBC Universal and video-sharing partner Hulu, who they say ripped off their idea for online television. It all dates back to 2006, when Hula presented their business model to NBCU execs--allegedly. Fast-forward to today, and it's Hulu sans-avision-suffix that's one of the most popular video-services online and featuring Alec Baldwin in advertisements. NBC says the lawsuit is frivolous, especially since Fast Company reported that the technology came from a Chinese start-up the company acquired.
Netflix: Tired of swatting tennis balls and boxing your friends on the Wii? Well, now you can sit back and relax. Netflix announced recently it had finally started shipping discs that allow subscribers to stream movies on the popular Nintendo console. If you haven't reserved a copy for you Wii, make sure to get in line here.
