Fox President of Insight and Analytics Michael Mulvihill said the all-time low rating for the World Series this year is no cause for alarm for Major League Baseball or his network.
“Obviously, it’s more fun when ratings are up and the Series goes 6 or 7 games,” the exec wrote in a thread on Twitter/X, “but the expectations for MLB in 2024 are unchanged.”
The 119th edition of baseball’s Fall Classic, which ended Wednesday with the Texas Rangers claiming the first Series crown in their history, drew the smallest audience in history. The five-game victory by Texas over the Arizona Diamondbacks averaged 9.11 million viewers, according to Fox and Nielsen, worse than the previous low of 9.79 million for the LA Dodgers’ win in Covid-stricken 2020. Fox first carried the Series in 1996 and became its exclusive network home in 2000.

The England Lionesses defeat to Spain in the Women’s World Cup Final was watched by a peak of 14.4M people yesterday across the BBC and ITV.
Coverage was shown on both channels for the first time in the women’s game but couldn’t match the record from last year’s Euros final of a 17.4M peak, or the plus-20M who watched the men lose to Italy in the Euros final. The UK audience was well ahead of the previous women’s World Cup final between the U.S. and the Netherlands, however.
The vast majority – around 12M peak – watched on the BBC, according to Barb data from overnights.tv. The two public broadcasters have been sharing coverage throughout, as per normal arrangements with major soccer competitions.
Record audiences had been building throughout the tournament but England’s World Cup ended in tragedy with a 1-0 defeat courtesy of an Olga Carmona goal,...

England and Spain will make history Sunday when they go head-to-head in the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, with both teams making their first championship appearances.
No matter who prevails, it’ll be one for the history books. Unfortunately, soccer fans in the U.S. will have to peel themselves out of bed in the wee hours of the morning, since the match is taking place at 6am E.T./3 a.m. Pt.
The early morning (or even middle of the night) kickoffs have been one of the bigger challenges that put U.S. markets at a bit of a disadvantage when it came to broadcasting the 2023 Women’s World Cup. That and the fact that the USA was unexpectedly eliminated in their round of 16 match against Sweden after entering the tournament favored to win their third consecutive title.
Lucky for Fox, which owns the U.S. English-language broadcasting rights,...
