The word “mimang” holds multiple meanings in Korean. One, being unable to make sense from ignorance. Two, being unable to forget what one wants to forget. And three, searching far and wide. Following the rather successful short “Snail”, Kim Tae-yang, in his feature debut that was shot for four years in Seoul, presents a film that implements the meanings of the word in three different chapters, through a distinct ‘walk-and-talk' style.

Sean Wang and his grandmas have had quite the month. On Jan. 19, the filmmaker’s debut feature, Dìdi (弟弟), had its world premiere in competition at the Sundance Film Festival, and then four days later he became an Oscar nominee for Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó. He shot the Disney+ documentary short in 2021 during the pandemic, about the daily life of his paternal and maternal grandmothers, Yi Yan Fuei and Chang Li Hua, who after being widowed about a decade ago became roommates and then, as Wang puts it, “sisters” and “soulmates.”
“We thought it would be special to fly back to Fremont and surprise the grandmas and watch the nominations with them,” Wang says of he and producer/cinematographer Sam A. Davis’ quick jaunt back to his Bay Area hometown in the middle of their Park City engagement. “Even if we didn’t get nominated, [we could] put an end to this surreal,...

Following the enormous critical and financial success in the local theaters, the release of “The Meg” started a wave of similarly-produced creature features and animal-attack films to capitalize on its release. That has led to a steady stream of cheap, goofy creature features that remain popular to this day, including this effort from 2020 that is now available on digital and DVD from WellGo USA.

Major U.S. acquisitions of Asian film titles have been scarce at the American Film Market so far this year, but business within the region nonetheless has been humming. The much-anticipated Korean period action tentpole Noryang: Deadly Sea has scored a deal at AFM for Japan distribution with Tokyo-based Twin Co. Ltd.
Seoul-based sales agent Acemaker Movieworks is repping the title to international buyers.
The film is the third and final title in director Kim Han-min’s trilogy about battles led by the famed Korean admiral Yi Sun-shin that started with The Admiral: Roaring Currents in 2014 and was followed by Hansan: Rising Dragon in 2022. The first film earned $138 million worldwide, which was the most ever by a Korean film at the time.

There can be a debate when it comes to adaptations of literature: Is it best to have read the source material or not? Reading it gives you an understanding of character and context so are not confused by any cinematic shorthand that presumes your understanding. Yet, coming in without that knowledge also removes any images that have formed in your head and so you base everything purely on what is presented to you on screen. “Creation of the Gods: Kingdom of Storms” is part one of a trilogy based on the classic work “Investiture of the Gods” written in the Ming Dynasty by Xu Zhonglin. With the second and third parts to follow, Well Go USA are bringing the opening chapter to the west and introducing the tale to a largely unfamiliar (Including this reviewer) audience.

Back when Kim Han-min made “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” in 2014, little did he know that the film would go on to become the highest grossing Korean film of all time, a record still held by it, or that he would go on to make a trilogy of features on its lead character, legendary real-life naval commander, the much loved Admiral Yi Sun-shin. Yet here we are, just under a decade since the release of “The Admiral”, and the final film in the Yi Sun-shin trilogy looks finally set to release, following on from last year’s “Hansan: Rising Dragon”.
Synopsis
In 1598, the seven-year Imjin War nears an end as Wae invaders prepare to withdraw from Joseon. Admiral Yi Sun-shin leads an allied fleet of Joseon and Ming ships to annihilate the Wae army. Joseon, Ming, and Wae forces clash at Noryang Strait, the deadly sea where Admiral Yi fights his last valiant battle.

Long-awaited indeed — “Noryang: Deadly Sea”, the third part of the trilogy that constitutes “The Admiral: Roaring Currents” and its prequel “Hansan: Rising Dragon”, two epics with the most stunning sea battles ever filmed. The first film has at least 60 mins of non-stop warfare.

The second film, Hansan: Rising Dragon, released in 2022, is a prequel that portrays the Battle of Hansan Island, which took place five years before Myeongnyang.

New York, May 3 (Ians) Artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the medical field has the possibility to increase inequities, particularly among people with low-access to healthcare and those who are from the vulnerable communities, according to a study.
AI is known to automate diagnoses, decrease physician workload, and even to bring specialised healthcare to people in rural areas or developing countries.
However, analysing crowd-sourced sets of data used to create AI algorithms from medical images, University of Maryland researchers found that most did not include patient demographics.
In the study published in the journal Nature Medicine, the researchers found that the algorithms did not evaluate for inherent biases either. That means they have no way of knowing whether these images contain representative samples of the population such as Blacks, Asians, and Indigenous Americans.
According to the researchers, much of medicine is already fraught with partiality toward certain races, genders, ages, or sexual orientations.

New York, April 5 (Ians) OpenAI’s ChatGPT can be helpful for breast cancer screening advice, but consumers using the Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool for health information still need to confirm information with their doctors, suggests a study.
Researchers at the University of Maryland, in a study, found that the answers generated by Chat Gpt provide correct information the vast majority of the time; sometimes, though, the information is inaccurate or even fictitious.
In February 2023, researchers from the varsity’s School of Medicine created a set of 25 questions related to advice on getting screened for breast cancer. They submitted each question to ChatGPT three times to see what responses were generated – the chatbot is known for varying its response each time a question is posed.
Three radiologists fellowship-trained in mammography evaluated the responses; they found that the responses were appropriate for 22 out of the 25 questions.
The chatbot did, however, provide one answer based on outdated information.

His journey uncovers secrets about the strange world he inhabits, as well as his family’s buried history. While waiting tables and dreaming about a world beyond Chinatown, he inadvertently becomes a witness to a crime, unraveling a criminal conspiracy in the city and taking a stab at embodying a leading man.

Episodic anthologies in the entertainment age of “content” are a tricky proposition. Crafting unique and compelling narratives is a challenge unto itself, made all the more difficult when creators have to start from scratch every episode… a notion that bucks against modern audiences’ inclination toward serialized stories. If viewers aren’t watching a movie, they want their favorite characters to keep them company for days and days (if not weeks and months). Sure, there are exceptions to the rule. “Black Mirror” became a streaming sensation (albeit after being developed outside of L.A.’s studio system), and “The Twilight Zone” remains the format’s gold standard (released back...

To fill the void left by the absence of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, this column is currently dedicated to films that premiered at the festival over the course of seven decades.
Trying to indicate the scale of a movie so immense and full of life that it can’t possibly be described (only experienced), the British critic Nigel Andrews wrote that calling “‘Yi Yi’ a three-hour Taiwanese family drama is like calling ‘Citizen Kane’ a film about a newspaper.” It’s a clever line, but those who haven’t seen Edward Yang’s final masterpiece could easily mistake it for a cop-out.
