Interested in independent Asian animation, but not sure where to start? Well, we could give you a list of anime, but we've already got (three parts!) to an anime tribute already. Instead, here's a list of 15 animated indies from the last few years that fall outside of mainstream animation studios like Disney, Pixar and Ghibli.
This list is in no way prescriptive nor comprehensive, and is merely organized by date of release. Some of these filmmakers are more established; others are just beginning their careers. Some of these are shorts, others are features, a few are even series. Regardless, with each of these animated indies, prepare to laugh, cry, and have your mind blown by the unbridled joy of animation.

The TikTok-ification of Twitch is nearly complete. The Amazon-owned hub has announced that its Discovery feed, which arranges clips and streams in an array that resembles the For You Page, will roll out to all users later this month.
The latest Discovery feed status update came during an episode of Patch Notes, Twitch’s weekly streaming show hosted by its internal staff. According to details provided by Twitch Product Manager Jessica Sung, the Discovery feed will be split into two sections: One for short-form video content and one for streams. The former feed will offer a similar experience to TikTok’s Fyp, while the latter will help viewers learn about streamers they haven’t watched yet.
“In the live feed you can scroll through tons of live streams from both streamers you already follow as well as streamers that we recommend based on your watch history,” Sung said during the Patch Notes episode.

Solo Leveling episode 12 aired on March 30, 2024. Sung Jinwoo’s journey from the weakest hunter of all to become the strongest of all has just started. After the horrific incidents at the Cartenon Temple, unbeknownst to him, Sung Jinwoo has been chosen to succeed in the position of the Shadow Monarch. Episode 12 marked the end of season one and left behind several important points.
Solo Leveling episode 12 saw Sung Jinwoo take on his strongest foe yet, Igris. There was a lot of hype and expectations surrounding the fight. Thankfully, it was more than the fans expected, and season one ended on a pretty good note. Apart from the fight, Sung Jinwoo finally took up his role as the Shadow Monarch. At first, the abilities may seem confusing, but after a while, it becomes pretty understandable.

Solo Leveling is, without a doubt, one of the best anime to premiere in 2024. Fans had great expectations from the anime, especially after knowing how popular the manhwa was. The anime premiered on January 6, 2024. Season one has been divided into two parts. Both the parts will have twelve episodes with a three-month gap in between.
Even though the fans were pretty excited about the anime, there seemed to be a particular aspect that troubled them. Sung Jinwoo’s story, from being the weakest to the strongest hunter, has several phases, but the transition began after the Cartenon Temple arc. However, it seems Sung Jinwoo had become emotionless after the near-death experience, which might hurt Solo Leveling’s popularity.

After the harrowing events that took place inside the C-rank dungeon in the sixth episode of Solo Leveling, it became quite clear that Sung Jinwoo’s secret would come to be known to the world of hunters sooner or later. As the latest episode indicates, that might come to pass sooner than expected, as two parties turn out to be already suspicious about Jinwoo’s recent activities. In the previous episode, Jinwoo was able to defeat the giant spider boss of the C rank dungeon and eventually found his raid partners, Dongsuk and his core team, to be their adversaries, who had previously deliberately abandoned him and Yoo Jinho to take the loot for themselves. Finding himself in a life-or-death situation, an enraged Jinwoo clashed with Dongsuk’s team and mercilessly butchered every one of them while a shocked, frightened Jinho watched the events unfold. Clearing up the dungeon, E-ranked...

In a world infested with murderous otherworldly beasts and dreadful overlords, humans emerge as the most despicable lot in Solo Leveling, as the series adheres to the common theme of monster lore. In the previous episode, Jinwoo’s newfound ability to access the world through a virtual log was showcased. While venturing into an ‘Instance Dungeon,’ Jinwoo ran a gauntlet against hordes of different kinds of enemies, and after successfully eliminating them, he rapidly rose through levels of the Hunter skillset. In the previous episode, Jinwoo’s motivation for self-improvement was highlighted, which seems to be associated with his responsibility to protect his family as well. Eventually, after defeating the dungeon boss, the former weakest Hunter seemingly tapped into his hidden potential to become one of the strongest ones.

Narratives concerning journeys to another realm through supernatural means, which occasionally involve gateways of sorts, are fancifully termed portal fantasies, instances of which are abundant across mythology and adventure fiction. In the context of manga, the subgenre is known as Isekai, and has gained immense popularity in recent years thanks to the LitRPG Sword Art Online, a series that combined sci-fi elements of virtual reality with a high fantasy setting to produce a unique experience. The popularity attained by Sword Art Online resulted in writers trying to replicate the success by following the narrative as a blueprint, and the South Korean web novel/manhwa Solo Leveling, created by Chugong, is one of numerous such entries.
Solo Leveling has quickly built a strong fanbase among readers thanks to strikingly good artwork, a simplistic, no-nonsense storyline combined with well-crafted action sequences, and tons of fan service elements. Reasonably, as the anime adaptation...

• More on the best culture of 2023
Slowly and quietly this year, the film Past Lives from Korean-Canadian dramatist and director Celine Song, has been working its discreet magic. Pretty much every new audience member has been turned into a convert, recommending it to a handful more who joined this film’s growing congregation of fans that can hardly describe the spell it has cast over our hearts. This is partly a deeply romantic and sad movie about lost love and missed chances. It’s also a kind of reverie about alternative existences, and what-if life paths. And this is a more urgent question for first- and second-generation immigrant communities in the US. They may well, as they grow into their 30s and 40s, consider the...

In the first episode of “Wednesday,” Jenna Ortega’s title character plays a cello cover of The Rolling Stones’ goth anthem “Paint It Black.” Pulling off such a scene required licensing the song, orchestrating a new arrangement of it, and teaching Ortega how to play it — all while the traditional scoring process was taking place. It’s a fusion of old and new that helped make the show a cultural phenomenon when it debuted on Netflix in November 2022. And while the production team might have made it look easy, it required intense coordination between multiple departments.

This article contains massive spoilers for "Fast X."
If there's a guiding principle to the "Fast & Furious" franchise, it's best summed up by one Cady Heron: the limit does not exist. After all, this is a series that, in the very first movie of the franchise, features street racing scenes where the cars go so fast they appear to travel into a psychedelic hyperspace — there's a legitimate argument to be made that "The Fast and the Furious" influenced the Wachowski's work on "Speed Racer," for cryin' out loud. Despite what a recent Twitter debate begun by people who clearly haven't been paying attention posited, the Fast Saga has never troubled itself with resembling any sort of reality.
With "Fast X," the franchise is now 10 films deep, and each successive installment has seen increasingly improbable events occur. A few examples: cars being able to fly across bridges and drop safely from airplanes,...

In a franchise inching towards double-digit entries and with as big of a cast as "Fast & Furious," where it's not a guarantee that everyone in the audience has watched (or remembers) all the previous installments, it's important to give each character a quirk that makes them instantly memorable. People who missed the second movie might not know the name of Tyrese Gibson's smartass, but his constant wisecracks make us care about him anyway on a film-to-film basis, even if he's rarely the main focus of any given scene.
Likewise, those who missed out on "Tokyo Drift" may not understand how Han Lue (Sung Kang) came in, but it's still easy to keep track of him as that guy who's always snacking on something. (He's also the guy fans rooted to bring back.) Not only is it a relatable character trait — who among us would not like to have...
