Los Angeles-based finance, production and sales outfit Est Studios has announced a partnership with Malaysia’s Jazzy Pictures to represent a pair of horror titles and is launcing sales at AFM this week.
Under the deal Est can sell exclusively to North America. and to other international territories outside Malaysia and Singapore on a non-exclusive basis.
The first title in the partnership is Warning From Hell (pictured) which received its world premiere at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in July and screened at London East Asian Film Festival this month.

It is always a pleasure to watch a filmmaker experimenting and succeeding with his fresh ideas, and that is exactly what Wei Renai Yongyao does in his feature debut, a Chinese/Malaysian co-production that seems to have combined the best from the Chinese realism and Malaysian magical realism, with Tan Chui Mui, who produced the movie, probably have something to do with the latter.

Chen, a middle-aged journalist who has remarried after divorce, is about to pick up his daughter Icy, who is back from the UK with her boyfriend, Yong, a Taiwanese experimental musician, in order to take them to his ex-wife’s apartment. However, what he receives is not exactly as expected, since the girl has lost her luggage on the bus, and Yong ended up getting beaten by the bus driver when he protested about the deed.

Franco-German broadcaster Arte and Paris-based Miam! Distribution have backed the animated documentary “Boys Boys Boys,” with the European broadcaster set to air the upcoming series next autumn as Miam! handles global sales. Still in production, the project is slated for delivery in mid 2023.
Directed by Valentine Vendroux and Clawdia Prolongeau and produced by Melting Productions, the 2D computer animated series will address a young adult and adolescent crowd in order to puncture myths about masculinity. Based on an original idea from Florent Guimberteau, the project won attention at Annecy’s Mifa Pitch Forum in 2020 while winning the prize for best pitch at the Rennes Animation Festival later that year.

Following its North American premiere at TIFF, “The Handmaiden” director Chan-wook’s latest project is a noir thriller starring Chinese star Tang Wei.
When a climber is found dead at the bottom of a mountain, detective Hae-jun (Park Hae-il) investigates the man’s death to determine whether it was an unfortunate accident, suicide, or homicide. In the course of his investigation, Hae-jun encounters the victim’s beguiling Chinese wife Seo-rae (Wei). Mesmerized by her charms and through a language barrier full of broken translations, Hae-jun finds himself caught in her web as he endeavours to solve the mystery of her husband’s death.
