Back in October 2019, before the pandemic, we brought you news about American Civil War movie Freedom’s Path.
The feature, which charts the friendship between a Union soldier and a runaway slave who is helping facilitate the Underground Railroad, stars Ewen Bremner (Trainspotting), Rj Cyler (Me And Earl And The Dying Girl) and Gerran Howell (Catch 22). Post-production has just wrapped.
As it turned out, the project would mark the final stops on the journey of two veteran actors who died while the movie was in post-production: Thomas Jefferson Byrd, a frequent Spike Lee collaborator, and New Orleans native Carol Sutton, both of whom had supporting roles.
Both actors died in sad circumstances. Tony-nominee Byrd was murdered in Atlanta and Sutton died of complications from Covid.
Today, the production has chosen to release two images of the admired actors in their final film, marking the first official stills from the movie.

Skip Williamson (L), Jay Lynch
In this space two weeks ago, I wrote about the death of cartoonist and comix legend Jay Lynch. I noted his half-century friendship with Skip Williamson; despite their physical distance, I don’t think two people could have been closer.
As fate would have it, Skip died eleven days after Jay. Each was 72 years old. For long-time friends of the pair, for long-time fans of the pair – and I count myself among both groups – the timing was crippling. Skip long had heart problems so even though it was shocking, it wasn’t totally unexpected. However, there’s a kind of appropriateness about that timing that makes complete sense.
I won’t repeat their mutual history other than to mention the first comic book they pioneered was Bijou Funnies. Both had contributed to Harvey Kurtzman’s Help! Magazine and, later, to Playboy. Skip’s most revered character was Snappy Sammy Smoot,...

Every town must have a place / Where phony hippies meet / Psychedelic dungeons / Popping up on every street • Frank Zappa, “Who Needs The Peace Corps?”
The late Sixties really did live up to its reputation. In my home town of Chicago hippie central was the Lincoln Park neighborhood around the iconic Biograph Theater, where, 34 years earlier, the FBI allegedly shot John Dillinger to death. Today, hippies can’t even afford to drive down Lincoln Avenue.
The area sported many blues and folk bars, giving such local talent as Steve Goodman, John Prine, Hound Dog Taylor and Harvey Mandel a place to strut their stuff. It was Mecca to the storefront theater movement, creating world-renown companies such as the Steppenwolf and the Organic Theater a home for newcomer writers and actors like David Mamet, Joe Mantegna, Laurie Metcalf, John Malkovich, and John Ostrander. One of the overlooked outcomes of last week’s election is the growth of the marijuana legalization movement. Buying, possessing and using the stuff is going to be legal for adults in Massachusetts, Nevada, California and Maine – as it is now in Colorado, Alaska, Washington State, Washington D.C., and Oregon. Over 20 percent of Americans reside in states where such use by adults is legal. In over half of these United States, weed is kosher for medicinal use.
First Fun Fact: A few years ago, the Heeb Magazine website informed us that, properly handled, cannabis is indeed kosher. That should popularize the Passover herb plate.
Second Fun Fact: If not for weed, we might not have our direct sales comic book distribution system. Back in the mid-60s, we started seeing retail outlets called “head shops” pop up all over this great nation. These places were sort of like today...

Crime can kill him, but it can't stop him from doing his job. Based on Joe Casey and Chris Burnham's cult graphic novel of the same name, Officer Downe follows a cop who is brought back to life—again and again—to protect his city against eclectic crime organizations that are armed to the teeth. Ahead of the film's November 18th release from Magnet Releasing, we caught up with Officer Downe screenwriter, producer, graphic novel writer and co-creator Joe Casey for our latest Q&A feature to discuss the movie's journey to the big screen, working with Slipknot's Shawn Crahan on his feature film directorial debut, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Joe. When you and Chris Burnham created the Officer Downe graphic novel, did you ever imagine that you would get the opportunity to adapt it into a film?
Joe Casey: Absolutely not.

A seemingly indestructible force will come to theaters and VOD this fall, as Magnet Releasing has acquired Officer Downe for Us distribution beginning November 18th:
Press Release: New York, NY (September 22, 2016) – Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, announced today that they have acquired U.S. rights to Officer Downe, the debut feature of M. Celebrating its world premiere this weekend at the 2016 Los Angeles Film Festival is the graphic novel adaptation Officer Downe, which was written by Joe Casey (who also wrote the source material) and directed by M. Shawn Crahan, (also known to fans worldwide as “Clown” from Slipknot). The film stars Kim Coates as the titular character: a badass cop unable to die and Los Angeles’ last form of protection from a corrupt future world.
Produced by Mark Neveldine and Skip Williamson, two of the maniacs behind the Crank series, Officer Downe looks to be a balls-to-the-wall actioner that takes no prisoners (pun absolutely intended).
Daily Dead caught up with Coates prior to the film’s premiere to hear more about his experiences taking on the lead role for Officer Downe, collaborating with Crahan on the film, why the world needs more badass movies, and the virtues of playing an immortal character.

Attention comedy geeks everywhere! To paraphrase a literary classic, this new documentary feature lets us all “look back in laughter” at one of the most influential humor magazines of the last fifty years. Actually its legacy reaches on past its newstand existence. Yes, it’s been absent from newsstands (there’s still a few of them left) for nearly twenty years. But, to paraphrase again, we’ve come “not to bury this magazine, but to praise it”. And to recall the chuckles and the mini-empire it spawned. Of course, this wasn’t the first humor publication. Puck paved the way decades before. Then Mad magazine shook up the staid 1950’s. But by 1970, that mag had somewhat settled into a (still entertaining) routine, poking fun at suburbia, and wasn’t connecting with the “counter-culture”. Younger “baby boomers” wanted their humor to have a sharper edge, to reflect the “hippie” spirit, and...

With a deadly designer drug at the centre of upcoming thriller, Urge, there’s a steady stream of talent coming aboard who may succumb to its effects. The latest addition to the cast is That ’70s Show star Danny Masterson.
The movie will revolve around a group of friends who jet off for an island adventure. Upon their arrival, they meet a drug designer who lures them into sampling his latest product. The twist here is that the side-effect (or the main effect, however you choose to look at it) of the pill causes people to lose their ability to control their urges. A bit like most drugs, then. Still, with Pierce Brosnan attached as the dodgy drug creator, here’s hoping we’ll get a brilliantly hammy villain who spews crazed soliloquys. Leading the group of friends into their doomed and/or enlightened druggy experience is Twilight‘s Ashley Greene.

Newave! Underground Mini Comix of the 1980s
by Michael Dowers (Editor) Fantagraphics Books
Seems like the malaise of 1970s America inspired a lot of people to take matters into their own hands and create art outside of the mainstream. This was certainly true of the underground music scenes that were percolating on both coasts and in many cities in between. Tired of the passionless music, the flared out fashions and the earth tone colors, independent artists and musicians began creating their way out of a funk that had turned everything green shag and ugly brown.
The dissatisfaction of the times may have sparked a call to action, but the creative inspiration came from the 60s underground comics movement pioneered by artists like Robert Crumb and Gilbert Shelton. That inspiration met as well with the anti-pop ideas of the New Wave of music coming out of the UK. This happy new...
