Adam Driver has had a very interesting career in the industry starting with her supporting roles in the 2010s. After his on-screen debut in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar, the actor continued improving himself with his supporting performances in Girls, Lincoln, Frances Ha, and Inside Lleywn Davis. The actor has now become a great leading man in dramas as well as blockbusters.
Adam Driver as Neil in Gayby | Wolfe Releasing
One of his most entertaining supporting roles was in the 2012 rom-com Gayby, where he played the role of Neil, the co-worker of Matthew Wilkas’s character. One of the latest and most interesting slight trends in Korean cinema is combining genre basis with arthouse aesthetics, particular in sci-fi and horror movies, with titles like “Seire” and “Fallen” being among the most prominent samples. Han Dong-seok also implements a similar approach in “The Sin”, which begins as a film about an experimental film, before it becomes a full-throttle horror, retaining though, the arthouse aesthetic essentially throughout.
The Sin is available from KT Alpha
Si-young has been chosen to play the lead in an experimental art film centered around her dance major. As soon as she arrives in the remote building that is to serve as the main set, a number of unpleasant surprises fall on her (pun intended). As soon as she reaches a building, she witnesses a body falling from the roof next to her. Although it turns out it was a test doll for the shooting,...

The director of Frances Ha and The Squid And The Whale has made Netflix his home over the past few years, releasing his last four films exclusively on the streaming platform.

The 2023 Vietnamese film Black Rose is quite an animal. Not that it has a great wild beauty about it or that it has horns on its head that make it special, but that it has the head of a lion but the bust of a penguin. That has its own kind of allure, it seems. People want to watch such animals, at least for a while, because they want to decipher how they were put together. So how was Black Rose put together? It is clear from the first frame that the idea must have popped up in the maker’s mind to create a swashbuckling revenge thriller that isn’t short on adult scenes. I will have to admit that the exposition is quite gripping, and the lion takes a leap only to be failed by the slow penguin, by which I mean that the exposition is let down by things to come.

Watching Single’s Inferno makes me feel as if I’ve stumbled into an illegal circus. To me, it almost comes across as demeaning when the panel discusses what’s happening within the show. Obviously, since the show is such a super hit, I’m the problem here, but I just can’t seem to wrap my head around the idea at all. Especially now that the drama has begun, I’m just so frustrated by the reactions from the panel. I guess that’s what’s meant to make things fun, considering I wouldn’t be reacting at all if it weren’t for these 5 people largely reacting to ordinary things. Maybe it’s also how forgiving they are to men in comparison to the women? Specifically, with the whole thing happening with Min-Young and Jin-Seok this week, I’m quite disappointed with their reactions. A lot takes place in the two almost 90-minute episodes,...

Aporia (Jared Moshé)
What would your life be like if you didn’t go to work the day an accident would otherwise change everything? How much of your future might shift if you decide to simply alter your schedules to better accommodate picking up your child from school? One question seems bigger than the other, yet the second may actually impact what occurs next more. Because you can’t know for certain. And there aren’t any do-overs. Perhaps it’s better that way, to accept and move on rather than risk an even worse fate. Or is it? That’s what writer-director Jared Moshé seeks to contemplate with his grounded science fiction drama Aporia. – Jared M. (full review)

For many, Kim Seong-hun made one of the best non-serial killer South Korean thriller in “A Hard Day”. While he followed that up with the rather well-made but comparatively underwhelming “Tunnel”, he has since settled for creating a zombie-infested Joseon for Netflix's ultra-popular series “Kingdom”. For his much-awaited return to the big screen, he follows “Escape from Mogadishu” and “The Point Men” in adapting a real-life situation involving Korean diplomats finding themselves in a pickle overseas, for an action adventure feature presentation.

Every night in Barbieland is “girls’ night,” or so goes the bedazzled legend of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. The Barbies stay up late, talking, splashing in the pool, and the Kens go, well, wherever Kens go. What if one particular Ken (Ryan Gosling) wanted to stay over to make good on his promise of being Barbie’s (Margot Robbie) boyfriend? No can do. “The president is here!” Barbie insists. Ken goes home. Another day in paradise.
Gerwig’s vision of Barbieland is not so much a matriarchy but a Barbie-archy, a for-Barbie, by-Barbie culture in which every Barbie from President Barbie (Issa Rae) to Doctor Barbie (Hari Nef) to Writer Barbie is empowered to be the best Barbie she can be. The Barbies are Nobel Prize winners, astronauts, pilots. They’re happy garbagewomen and delivery workers. For the Barbies of Barbieland, their world is devoid of all that is miserable...

“Her Hobby” is screening at Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival
The movie begins as Jeong-in returns to her hometown, Pak-ha village, from the city, in the middle of the night, evidently carrying some sort of trauma. She does not find solace there either though, as the locals, headed by the Village Head and the Women's Group Chief never stop pinning her down, both for her mistakes in the fields and essentially for having left the village. When another woman from the city, Hye-jung moves to the same location,...

Two women band together against the patriarchy in the sun-drenched rural revenge drama Her Hobby, the feature debut of director Ha Myung-mi. Taking a big page out of the playbook of cult island revenge drama Bedevilled, though without the graphic gore, Ha's film unfolds in a small farming community where the men are lecherous creeps and the nagging and nosy middle-aged women do nothing to stop them from preying on the few young women unlucky enough to be living amongst them. One of those women is the diffident young Jeong-in (Jung E-seo) who returns to the village following her divorce from an abusive husband, only for her beloved grandmother to pass away immediately upon her arrival. Left to fend for herself, she works on the...

Asian-American cinema has been making significant steps forward recently, and “Supermarket Affairs”, by Vietnamese Nguyen Luong Hang (who has collaborated with Trinh Dinh Le Minh's in the award-winning debut feature “Goodbye Mother” ) is another testament to the fact, as it takes a rather amusing approach to life of Vietnamese immigrants in the US, inspired by Lynda Trang Dai's hit in the Vietnamese-American community “Supermarket Love Affair”, which is actually heard in the movie.

It might be obvious to say, but a film getting nominated for an Oscar doesn’t automatically make it good.
In fact, there have been many deserving movies over the years that were somehow overlooked by the Academy.
It’s easy to assume that certain releases don’t get nominated because they’re not what Oscar voters would usually go for, but there have been some surprises in the past.
For example, pretty much every new superhero film earns a nomination thanks to the technical or makeup categories, while random animated films are acknowledged most likely because of the low number on offer in a certain year.
This means films likem say, DC’s Suicide Squad may get mauled by the critics, but they still gain recognition from the Academy (it went on to win).
This is even more ridiculous when you consider that classics such as Don’t Look Now...

Veteran Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike's work cannot be categorized into one genre of movies. The prolific filmmaker is particularly well-known for his brand of horror and depravity (have you watched "Audition" yet?), but has also dabbled in legal comedies, musicals, samurai adventures, and much more over the course of his 30-plus years of directing (and counting).
His latest project, "Connect," is a live-action TV show that was inspired by Shin Dae-sung's webtoon of the same name. Miike's grisly body horror series follows Ha Dong-soo (South Korean actor Jung Hae-in), who gets abducted by a gang of organ harvesters and has his organs removed. As if that wasn't horrifying enough, his eye ends up being transplanted into a serial killer named Oh Jin-seop (Ko Kyung-po), causing Ha to experience visions of Oh's various murders. As such, it falls to Ha to put an end to the killer's rampage.

"The mighty hurling hound!" Juno Films has revealed an official US trailer for an indie drama from Ireland titled Róise & Frank, arriving in the US for viewing at the end of March in 2023. This dog movie is about a woman who believes her dog is her dead husband. A widow who has given up on life becomes convinced that a stray dog is the reincarnation of her Hurling-loving husband. "He has come back to be with her again… and to coach the local sports team." Ha. Bríd Ní Neachtain stars as Róise, with Cillian O'Gairbhi, Lorcan Cranitch, Ruadhán de Faoite, and Michelle Beamish. This looks really sweet and wholesome, the dog looks entirely convincing in a realistic way where I can't tell if he really is her dead husband or just a very friendly pooch. I think I need to watch this film! Early reviews are all positive so far.

Well, that was unexpected.
The White Lotus Season 2 Episode 5 sent all of the storylines in exciting directions, preparing us for the final two episodes of the season.
Honestly, it's hard to tell who will die in these final episodes. Aside from Daphne, Rocco, and Valentina, there are many potential victims.
It's hard to say I'll be sad to see the backs of many of these people because they're all pretty despicable.
They're like walking disasters; thanks to the writing and acting, you don't want to look away.
It's no secret that I've been waiting for the other shoe to drop regarding Quentin, but I didn't expect the final scene to be that shocking.
A part of me thinks Jack, Quentin, and the others are crooks and have kickstarted this plan to try and get money out of Tanya,

Warning: contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Episode 5.
Should have seen that coming. Two nice things in a row just happened to June and Luke (hot marriage sex plus romantic Al Green slow dance), so by the laws of The Handmaid’s Tale, one of them’s now going to have to lose a limb. No good deed goes unpunished on this show, which keeps its finger hovering over the ‘electrocute’ button anytime a character even comes close to having a good time.
That played out in the sad story of Jaden (Owen Painter), a young Guardian raised by Gilead after being stolen like Hannah from ‘unfit’ parents. Somehow, Jaden had retained a simple, instinctive goodness despite the regime’s brutality, and was working with Mayday to try to help. His political philosophy? “People should just be able to talk to each other, see their families, do whatever they want.

The 60th New York Film Festival kicked off Friday night with the North American premiere of the film that had previously opened the Venice Film Festival, Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s allegedly “unadaptable” 1985 novel White Noise.
The satire about existential angst, which stars Baumbach’s two most frequent muses, Adam Driver (Frances Ha, While We’re Young, The Meyerowitz Stories, Marriage Story) and Greta Gerwig (Greenberg, Frances Ha, Mistress America), was warmly received at both its press and public screenings. (It’s currently at 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.) And in a year in which the Oscar race seems wide open, Netflix — which was behind the opening night film and Tavern on the Green after-party for the second time, three years after The Irishman, with co-ceo Ted Sarandos on hand for the festivities — hopes that there may be a path to...

In 1973 Chol Soo Lee, a 21-year-old Korean immigrant, was wrongfully incarcerated for the murder of a Chinatown gang leader. He became a symbol for systemic injustice against Asian Americans and spurred solidarity within his community. His prison memoirs have been adapted into a book and his case inspired the 1989 drama film “True Believer.” But his life — what happened before and after he became famous for his imprisonment — was far from a Hollywood fairy tale.
In the documentary “Free Chol Soo Lee,” first-time doc directors Julie Ha and Eugene Yi use archival materials in an attempt to present their tragic hero in all three dimensions. Despite their efforts, Soo Lee feels just out of reach, but the story of his life remains as important as it is horrifying.
The film opens by explaining the crime and how Soo Lee became a prime suspect. Journalistic giant K.W. Lee compared Soo Lee’s...

The late Korean-American immigrant Chol Soo Lee never got the chance to narrate Julie Ha and Eugene Yi’s clear-eyed documentary about his journey through the American justice system, but his voice rings through every moment of “Free Chol Soo Lee.” His own memoirs and letters to key compatriots frame the film, thanks to respectful and compelling narration from another former prisoner of Korean descent, Sebastian Yoon (you can find his story in the Netflix Ken Burns docuseries “College Behind Bars”).
, which follows Lee’s tragic life through many iterations. A tremendous miscarriage of justice led to him being incarcerated in 1973 for a murder he did not commit, and that story alone could support its own film. However, Ha and Yi also delve into Lee’s upbringing, the myriad ways systems let him down (from schools to assorted detention facilities), and his desire to find a place in the world as a confused young man.

As we know all too well, freedom and justice aren’t for all in America.
Sundance documentary “Free Chol Soo Lee” centers on the racial profiling and subsequent arrest of then 20-year-old Korean immigrant Chol Soo Lee who was accused of a gang-related murder in San Francisco’s Chinatown in 1973.
The documentary premieres August 12 at the IFC Center in New York City, followed by a special one-night-only simulcast screening event hosted by Mubi in over 180 theaters nationwide August 17 for the week that would’ve been Lee’s 70th birthday. After the special one-night-only event, “Free Chol Soo Lee” will continue to roll out to theaters across the country, including the Roxie Theater in San Francisco starting August 19, with Los Angeles and additional cities to come. IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer below.
As seen in the documentary, after a trial hinging on questionable accounts from white tourists, Lee is convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

Margot Robbie’s Viral ‘Barbie’ Costumes Are Created by Oscar-Winning ‘Little Women’ Costume Designer
Oscar-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran is behind the “Barbie” costumes that are going viral on the internet. Variety has confirmed Gerwig has teamed up with her “Little Women” costume designer to bring Barbie and her neon world to life.
Photos of Margot Robbie, who is playing Barbie, and Ryan Gosling, playing Ken, have been circulating on social media for several weeks. In one viral photo, the duo are seen rocking hot pink neon spandex outfits while rollerblading along Venice Beach. The Oscar nominees were accessorized with bright yellow rollerblades along with matching kneepads.
“Barbie” remains high on the list of most anticipated projects for 2023. In April, fans got their first official glimpse at Robbie as Barbie, when Warner Bros. revealed a first look image at CinemaCon. The shot showed the star seated behind the wheel of a pink convertible, flashing a mega-watt smile and donning a polka dot headband.

Apple TV+ will be diving back into the multi-generational world of Sunja, Solomon and more with Pachinko Season 2 already in the works.
In its first season, Pachinko focused on the early life of Sunja as she moves from Korea to Japan, and her grandson Solomon’s unrelenting efforts to close a critical finance deal and prove his worth. But with an emotional finale that featured a bittersweet death, a heart-wrenching arrest and a key character’s return, Pachinko sets the stage for an even more dramatic and history-packed Season 2.
