"Downton Abbey" has endured across six seasons of television and two feature films as an ensemble-driven costume drama about the momentous lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and the downstairs staff that serve them. There are a lot of people to keep track of, which seems like a huge task to take on seeing as "Downton Abbey" is always adding new characters each season. But series creator Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") has shown that he's more than up to the task.
I think it's pretty astounding that Fellowes is not only the head honcho who built "Downton Abbey" from the scraps of a potential "Gosford Park" spin-off, but he's also written every single episode, in addition to both feature films. Usually, a show passes the reins off to a writer's room, but this is a case where the series is largely the brainchild of one person. This is Fellowes' project through and through.

When you look at the sprawling ensemble that is "Downton Abbey," it can be easy to lose track of all of these characters, especially when you're having to alternate between the aristocratic Crawley family and their downstairs staff. But series creator/writer Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") has done a great job of giving both clusters equal attention, as the show hops from one character's plotline to the next. Of course, the breadth of a television show with six seasons allows ample time to make sure no one gets lost in the shuffle.
As the PBS series made the transition to the big screen in 2019 with "Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture," and again this year with "Downton Abbey: A New Era," I wondered if Fellowes would be able to give as much attention to Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess, while also allowing characters like Rob James-Collier's Thomas Barrow enough...

"You didn’t read the book, did you?" I asked Julian, my 13-year-old son, although it was more an invitation for him to confess. Because I knew.
Julian had walked in the door when I was just in the middle of the Season Three finale of Downton Abbey. Mrs. Hughes, head housekeeper, was in the process of dismissing Edna, a new maid, who had been shamelessly pursuing sad and lonely widower Tom Branson. "There are rules to this way of life and if you don't intend to abide by them it is not the life for you," Mrs. Hughes told Edna.
Branson, once the house chauffeur, had fallen hopelessly in love with Sybil, Grantham Manor's youngest daughter, and together they ran off to marry in his native Ireland. After several months and a number of reasons I won't recap here, both Tom and Sybil, now pregnant with their first child,...

Residents of an east side Detroit neighborhood could soon be welcoming a new neighbor with a hearty "Bawitdaba!"
The rap-rock performer Kid Rock purchased a 6,000-square-foot colonial-style house in the neighborhood earlier this year, according to the Detroit Free Press, though it's not clear whether he will make it his full-time residence. Tom Barrow, an accountant and former mayoral candidate who lives next door to the house, told the Free Press he looks forward to having the musician as a neighbor.
“We're hoping his private life is calming and can have a positive influence on my young children," he said. "We're confident he'll be a good neighbor. I know he's very pro-Detroit."
Kid Rock is the stage name of Romeo, Mich., native Robert Ritchie. He got his start in the Detroit music scene and has been a prominent supporter of the city.
