The Montreal World Film Festival has been plunged into crisis after a the City of Montreal, Quebec cultural funding body Sodec and federal cultural agency Telefilm announced they are to withdraw their money - worth more than £327,000 - for the festival's 2014 edition.
Unsettled by the development, Regroupement des distributeurs indépendants de films du Québec announced it would not send any films to this year's festival without reassurances from the event's chiefs.
President of the umbrella distributor that represents independent, smaller films, Andrew Noble, said: "We know they've lost major sponsors and their public funding. For us to put our films into that reality becomes very, very difficult.”
Montreal newspaper Le Devoir is reporting that the festival owes around $2.5 million (£1.3 million) and is prepared to mortgage - or possibly even sell - the Imperial Theatre (built in 1913) in order to solve the debt crisis.

We haven't seen much of Zach Braff since the end of "Scrubs" and since his two post-Garden State films, The Ex and The Last Kiss failed to propel him to a feature movie player. He's now back in a decidedly un-Braffian role, playing the lead in The High Cost of Living, a dreary-looking low-budget Canadian film about a man who hits-and-runs a pregnant lady. Feeling guilty, he goes out of his way to make nice with the pregnant woman, who doesn't know he was the driver, and ... well, you can envision every beat of this film, since it's right out of the rom-com handbook, only the tone and tenor is turned on its head.
Still, I can't hate on Braff, so it's nice to see the guy in films again, even those that will receive only a token theatrical release on May 13. It's already on VOD, if you can find it.

Deborah’s dark drama, High Cost of Living, also written by her, centre’s on the burgeoning relationship between an unlikely pair. Nathalie (Isabelle Blais) is expecting her first child and Henry (Zach Braff) is on his way to his next drug deal. Their paths fatefully collide one night in an event that irrevocably changes their lives.
“Just getting into the festival was a feat unto itself–and so it’s a crazy unexpected privilege to win this award,” says a beaming Deborah. “There were so many great Canadian first features in the festival this year, that it’s truly an honour to receive this award amidst such outstanding company.”
The Skyy Vodka Award For Best Canadian First Feature Film also carries a cash prize of $15,000.
“We are thrilled to have our film complimented by the prestigious Skyy Vodka Award for Best Canadian First Feature,” says Filmoption VP Andrew Noble.
