Starve Acre, Daniel Kokotajlo’s folk horror starring Morfydd Clark and Matt Smith, is coming to UK cinemas in September.
After a glitzy world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival last October, Daniel Kokotajlo’s Starve Acre is finally being released in cinemas later this year.
Kokotajlo’s follow-up to his vastly underrated 2017 first feature Apostasy stars Morfydd Clark and Matt Smith as a Yorkshire couple whose life is turned upside down, with terrifying consequences. Starve Acre is based on a book of the same name by Andrew Michael Hurley, published in 2019 and the film adaptation is hitting cinemas on the 6th September, courtesy of BFI Distribution.
Here’s a more detailed synopsis:
1970s, rural Yorkshire. Richard and Juliette Willoughby’s seemingly idyllic family life is thrown into turmoil when their young son Owen starts acting out of character. A sudden, tragic event brings grief and drives a wedge between the once happy couple.

Rebecca Ferguson is becoming close to a household name. O.K., maybe “close” is a slight exaggeration, but her profile is bigger than her social media presence, and that’s primarily because her resume over the past decade is filled with one banger after another. “The Greatest Showman,” three acclaimed “Mission: Impossible” flicks, a Best Picture nominee in “Dune” and, likely, a second Oscar nominee in her latest blockbuster, “Dune: Part Two.” And now, she’s up for a potential Emmy nomination as Juliette, a “sheriff” in a post-apocalyptic civilization trying to discover the truth behind the gigantic, multi-level “Silo” humanity is confined to.

My guest this week is Rebecca Ferguson. She recently reprised her role of Lady Jessica with Dune: Part Two, and plays the lead role in Silo, Apple TV+’s dystopian series about a community gone underground following an apocalyptic event. Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer-reluctantly-turned-sheriff, who uncovers alarming secrets while investigating a mysterious death.
Here, Ferguson describes the “intoxicating” experience of making the show, working with showrunner Graham Yost and her EP role, plus the elaborate and stunning sets and VFX work that went into it all.
As for Season 2 plans, how close will the show adhere to Hugh Howey’s original book series, on which it’s based? “I couldn’t possibly say,” Ferguson laughs, “but can you guess? No, don’t guess!”
Ferguson also addresses whether her character of Ilsa Faust would ever make a posthumous appearance in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two…

“I was blown away from the first script I read,” admits triple threat Oscar, Emmy and Grammy winner Common about his initial reactions to the labyrinthine plot and setting of sci-fi drama “Silo.” For our recent webchat he adds, “I was like, ‘thank you God that they are even considering me for this role.’ And when I got to meet with Graham Yost and then eventually got the call that I was chosen for the role of Sims, I was like really in gratitude. This is one of the best characters that I will ever play,” he says, explaining further that “the crew we have, from hair and makeup to our camera crew to obviously set design, costume design. Man, I was like, ‘I am working with excellence!’ I don’t think I’ve been on a on a film or TV project where I looked everywhere, and it was just excellent,...

“This is not just a film that I’ve created a character and done and left. It’s a show that I am so involved in that I love it beyond anything and everyone,” says Rebecca Ferguson at Deadline’s Contenders TV panel for Silo. “It’s really thought-provoking, philosophical, psychological.”
She added: “We had one day where we weren’t really figuring out a scene … and we just stopped the shooting for 15 minutes … and we just talked it through, because we’re not rushing anything. This is the essence of this show. We get to the core of what we’re doing and why we’re doing it, in the most phenomenal setting.”

Teenagers are rebels, and it’s fairly obvious that in the years leading up to our adulthood, we do a lot of things we aren’t supposed to do. Sneaking out of the house, breaking curfews, partying with other rebels—you know the gist. But when someone spends the better part of their life watching a self-proclaimed prophet utter rubbish and taking them seriously, it’s trouble. Nurse Faure in the latest French crime thriller Anthracite is a person who has stopped being a normal person ever since she broke into Solal’s storage unit. Her actions led to the deaths of many innocent people, and they had massive consequences for the small, scenic town of Levionna.
Spoilers Ahead
Why Was Faure Influenced By Caleb?
Unlike other girls in Levionna, Faure didn’t directly get involved with the cult. A few months after Caleb was arrested, Solal completed his investigations and interviews.

The Netflix series Anthracite is a French Thriller depicting a gruesome cult conspiracy in the French Alps. Honestly, this series had me on my toes through to the end and I have a feeling that Anthracite is about to be one of the top thrillers to come out this year. Moreover, Alpine France truly is a sight to behold; I wouldn’t lie if I told you the serene background had me distracted for a few minutes there. Anthracite is loosely inspired by a real-life mass suicide incident in the French Alps in the 1990s linked to a cult named the Order of the Solar Temple. Even though this series is highly dramatized, its association with real-life events adds another layer of intrigue to the series.

Gkids said Tuesday that it has acquired North American distribution rights to the French psychedelic fantasy Sirocco and the Kingdom of Winds.
Directed by Benoît Chieux, the film is a singular vision many years in the making. It had its world premiere as the opening-night feature of the 2023 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Next up, it will have its New York premiere as the centerpiece film of the Fiaf Animation First Film Festival on January 26.
Kingdom of Winds is the first animated feature solely directed by Chieux, who previously co-directed 2013’s Aunt Hilda! The two-time César Award nominee also served as the screenwriter for 2008’s European Film Award-winning Mia and the Migoo, which was one of the earliest titles distributed by Gkids.

As The Voice continued its Season 24 Battles Monday evening, one of them darn near claimed coach Reba McEntire as a casualty. After hearing Corii and Ms. Monét tear up Patti Labelle’s “New Attitude” in rehearsal, the country legend mock-fell to the floor — which seemed a pretty apropos reaction, actually. How’d the twosome do when it counted? And who else gave performances that should’ve come with a side of smelling salts? Read on…

With so many streaming platforms and broadcast channels, it's a challenge for shows of any genre to find an audience and thrive. This is especially true of the horror genre, which feels more niche in appeal than sitcoms and prestige dramas. However, not every cancellation has to do with low viewership, particularly with recent changes across the entertainment industry. From studio politics to fickle viewer attention, some shows get cut short for the oddest of reasons.
These horror shows were each canceled for relatively unconventional reasons, not entirely having to do with ratings or production costs. With everything from acclaimed international productions to adaptations of popular licensed properties, nothing is safe from behind-the-scenes drama and obtuse content strategies. The only thing scarier than some of these shows is the inane rationale that ended them before their time.

You can smell what’s happening in “Starve Acre” before you puzzle the rest of it out. The grassy, peaty dampness of its rural Yorkshire setting seems to hit the olfactory glands without any scratch-and-sniff assistance, only intensifying as the film unearths its literally deep-buried secrets. Daniel Kokotajlo’s impressive second feature unfolds in a vein of British folk horror that has been popular of late — with films from Ben Wheatley’s “A Field in England” to Mark Jenkins’s “Enys Men” all tapping into that retro “Wicker Man” eeriness — but rarely with such rattling sensory specificity or formal refinement. Starring Morfydd Clark and Matt Smith as former townies unprepared for the full burden of lore they inherit with their desolate farmhouse, it’s a tale of quite outlandish fantastical leaps, grounded by the chills it also finds in common weather and wildlife.

Updated with video: Before VFX supervisor Daniel Rauchwerger began his work on Apple TV+’s Silo, he was told the actual silo should be treated like a character — not a massive structure where 10,000 people are forced to live.
“The design was one open space, so very quickly, we treated it as one room,” Rauchwerger, whose credits include Inception and John Carter, said at Deadline’s Visual Effects + Screen event. “Every time you look up, down and sideways, you see the next room. One of the main things that became a challenge was bringing all those people to life, just living their lives.”
Based on Hugh Howey’s trilogy of dystopian novels, Silo is the story of the last 10,000 people on Earth, whose mile-deep home protects them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built, and any who try to find out face fatal consequences.

‘The Traitors’ Host Claudia Winkleman Wins Edinburgh Award
The Traitors host Claudia Winkleman is to receive the Outstanding Achivement Award at this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival. Winkleman has been a BBC stalwart for years and has been hosting smash hit Strictly Come Dancing since its inception two decades ago. More recently, she hosted BBC breakout The Traitors, winning over audiences and awards juries for her warm, light touch approach. She also hosts Channel 4’s The Piano and a BBC Radio 2 weekend show. Winkleman will receive her award during an In Conversation with Kirsty Young to discuss her career and highlights from the past three decades. “I am humbled and honoured to accept this Outstanding Achievement Award,” she said. “I am ridiculously lucky and work with extraordinary people, so this is actually for them and not for me.” Last year’s award was won by Motherland and Cunk on Earth star Diane Morgan.

This article contains spoilers for Silo season 1 and the first two books of Hugh Howey’s Wool series.
The Apple TV+ series Silo has been a fairly faithful adaptation thus far, with the first season adapting the first book of Hugh Howey’s Wool series. However, book fans who were hoping for all of Wool to be covered were likely surprised to see the first season end with Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) going outside and discovering the existence of other silos, an event that occurs in the third part of Howey’s five part novel. This is a logical ending for the first season of the TV series, as it ends with a major reveal that disrupts what we knew about this world. But it also means that book readers may have to wait a little longer than expected for the series to dive into the events of the second book Shift.

From working at Mechanical to becoming a fugitive on the run from the Judicial, Juliette Nichols has come a long way. And all of this because her lover left her a hard drive. If you take a moment to think about it, all of this is happening inside a metal structure that is now storing the only humans alive on Earth. It’s surreal. Only one episode remains after this, and we have no idea what secret lies outside the silence that the judiciary is so desperately trying to keep. But Episode 9 shows Juliette finally being able to see what’s on the hard drive. It’s not much, yet it’s a lot.

The clock is running out for Season 1 of Apple TV+‘s atmospheric and addictive sci-fi mystery, Silo, as the penultimate episode turns into a race against time. Having escaped last week’s violent ambush by It head Bernard (Tim Robbins) and Judicial enforcer Simms (Common), the underground society’s recently installed Sheriff Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) makes a brilliant power play by heading straight for the last place Simms would look for her: his own home. There, as we see in this exclusive clip from the episode (dropping June 23), the engineer-turned-law official is able to access the tech needed to decrypt the hard drive she’s been running around with, while also sharing with the captive Simms’ wife exactly what kind of monstrosities she and her husband have been party to. At the same time, Juliette’s deputy, Billings (Chinaza Uche), is having a reckoning with his own past failings,...

Murder mysteries hinging on the last moment to reveal the identity of a murderer can either engage the viewer so much that they get fully immersed in the narrative, anticipating the killer, or make the plot so convoluted that they lose the viewer’s interest. The new film Pocket Dial Murder falls somewhere around the middle. It captures attention in some patches, enticing the viewer into the story, but loses its grip with its contrived ending.
Pocket Dial Murder revolves around the lives of a couple, Stacey and Jeff, that get disrupted after Stacey receives a call from Jeff and hears a murder committed on the other end. Jeff claims to be innocent, as he had lost his phone earlier, implying that whoever has the phone is the murderer. An investigation begins, and Stacey begins to doubt Jeff, sensing her life is in danger.

This eye-catching, dimension-traveling adventure might be aimed at kids, but there’s plenty here for adults who grew up believing the possibilities of animation might be endless. Now that Disney has done its best to persuade us otherwise, Benoît Chieux’s fabulous Sirocco and the Kingdom of Air Streams is here as a palate-cleanser, tucking away a tender story of love and loss in an insanely imaginative psychedelic brainstorm. If Matt Groening and Miyazaki took magic mushrooms and watched The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine together, they could conceivably come up with a movie to match this.
Chuck Jones’ 1970 classic (albeit for weird kids and stoners only) The Phantom Tollbooth is a suitable benchmark, only here it is a game of hopscotch that provides the conduit between this world and the Kingdom of Air Streams. Which is where the story begins, with the mighty wizard Sirocco summoning the elements to assuage his boredom.

Flying on an airplane has to rank right up there with the least enjoyable experiences we face these days — so imagine my surprise when spending a few hours on a plane with Apple TV+’s Hijack actually turned out to be downright pleasurable. The new hostage drama starring Idris Elba (premiering Wednesday, June 28; I’ve seen three of the seven episodes) is a good old-fashioned pulse-pounder that takes full advantage of its claustrophobic setting with perfectly calibrated tension and high-intensity action scenes.

Episode 8 of Silo is all about Juliette and how she tries to find out what’s on the hard drive. But it isn’t an easy feat. Not only is the hard drive encrypted, but she has the Judicial desperately looking for her. Both of these prove that the hard drive contains sensitive information. Alongside this plotline, there is another one that revolves around Juliette’s mom, Hanna, and shows why she committed suicide. Both of these plotlines take the urgency of the story up a notch as we realize just how suppressive the Judicial is and has been.

There’s nothing quite like an apocalyptic event which forces humanity to burrow its way into a single structure to ensure its survival to make you realise who your friends are. It’s Juliette’s fifth birthday, and she can wish for whatever she wants. Top of her list is an adventure, the likes of which this restless girl has only read about in books — specifically, a series of fantasy novels about a capricious wizard who controls the wind. In “Sirocco and the Kingdom of Air Streams,” a quiet afternoon takes an unpredictable, eye-popping turn, as Juliette (voiced by Loïse Charpentier) and her 8-year-old sister Carmen (Maryne Bertieaux) are whisked away to a dazzling surreal world of alligator-shaped airships and bird-headed opera divas, where seemingly anything can happen.

This week on Apple TV+’s Silo, Juliette tried to make a deal with Judge Meadows — only to learn that the doyenne of Judicial doesn’t pull all the strings at all!
Juliette sought out Meadows after learning that Gloria Hildebrandt, the woman whose name was inscribed above George’s inside the Georgia picture book (and who we met in Episode 1, as the fertility counselor), now is in Medical’s longterm care facility, drugged out of her gourd. Juliette forces a meeting with the “sick” (drunk) judge after getting her address from Billings and then showing up at the door the next morning with breakfast.
