(Warning: Big “Saltburn” spoilers ahead.)
“Well, it was mostly based on the family I murdered.”
So said Emerald Fennell during a discussion of the film she wrote and directed, “Saltburn,” that was part of TheWrap Screening Series. She was, of course, joking about what inspired her latest movie, but her deadpan delivery fit right into the tonal razor’s edge that “Saltburn” assuredly walks, straddling horror, melodrama and pitch-black comedy. It’s the story of Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), an Oxford student of modest means with a tragic backstory who befriends and becomes infatuated with an aristocratic classmate named Theo Catton, played by Jacob Elordi. When Oliver joins Theo at Saltburn, his family’s dazzlingly posh estate, Oliver’s true motivations become evident.

Numbers have begun rolling in for this second to last weekend of September 2023 and to be brutally honest: they are pretty terrible. Expend4bles is looking to come in severely under where even the most modest of tracking had it with what is looking like an $8-$10 million opening. In our Thursday predictions I saw that the fourthquel was tracking to a mid teens opening and thought it could get to around $17 million. It seems audiences decided to go the other way with this one and let it die a quiet death, the way many members of the Expendable team seem to have, as the film only features a handful of returning stars.
In his 5/10 review for the film, our Editor in Chief Chris Bumbray said that the film was neither as bad as most critics had written, yet still not very good. I would say I agree with that assessment,...

A journey filled with love, laughter, wonder, nostalgia, peak superhero amusement, and emotional conflicts comes to an end with My Adventures With Superman season finale episode titled Hearts of the Fathers. In the previous episode, Clark was able to escape from General Sam Lane’s captivity, even in his depowered form. He battled with a Kaiju-sized, empowered Parasite armor-clad Dr. Ivo and emerged victorious with the help of Lois, Jimmy, and the citizens of Metropolis. Sam’s initial belief about Superman being a weapon of invading alien aggressors started to falter, and realizing this, Amanda Waller craftily ousted him from his role as Task Force X chief. On the other hand, Clark learns that denizens of his birth planet, Krypton, were behind the Zero Day invasion twenty-two years ago (coinciding with his arrival on Earth), which led General Sam to believe Superman to be a threat. Lois lets go of...

Update: The box office outlook for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny isn’t getting any rosier, with Deadline reporting that the movie only managed to gross $82 million over the five-day holiday weekend. With numbers like that, the film seems unlikely to cross a total $200 million domestic gross. By comparison, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull grossed $151 million over its five day opening, and by all accounts the budget on this one exceeded $300 million. Ouch. When all is said and done, this will be the first Indiana Jones movie to ever lose money at the box office, making it a sad end to the franchise. Perhaps this is a case where Disney should have just left well enough alone.
On the plus side, Indy has very little competition next weekend, so he should be able to hang on to first place at the box office, with...

Saturday proved to be a better day than anticipated for the third adventure of the Guardians as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finishes its first weekend with an estimated $114 million, $4 million over what it was looking like it would finish with in yesterday’s update. By any other metric, an opening that large would be cause for celebration but for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, that number represents a fairly large drop off from the previous entry in the franchise as Guardians Vol. 2 pulled in $146.5 million when it opened exactly six years ago to the day and is also softer than what the studio (and I) were projecting on Thursday. But there are several reasons why this isn’t all bad news, with the first being that the film performed exceptionally well around the world and is looking at a nearly $270 million worldwide start followed by the fact that Vol.

The numbers for the weekend have begun pouring in and with 17 million made on Thursday previews rolled into Friday’s total take of around 55 million, it looks like the opening weekend for the highly anticipated Avatar: The Way of Water is going to come in slightly below its projections with around 150 million. Leading into this week, projections were all over the place from 160 million up to 200 million, which is why I felt safe splitting the difference in my predictions. Given the film’s runtime (a healthy 3 hours and 12 minutes) I figured that would slow down the opening weekend a bit. With the holidays fast approaching, I’m not sure how many people were mentally prepared for it!
The good news for this one is that it will most definitely have legs at the box office. It is a visual treat that is something that can only be experienced on the big screen.

Playbill, the monthly magazine that serves as official programs for Broadway, most of Off Broadway and other arts institutes, is signing off Twitter for good, citing the platform’s “greatly expanded” tolerance for “hate, negativity, and misinformation.”
“As a respected news outlet for the Broadway community, we feel we can no longer continue to utilize a platform where the line between actual news and insidious rhetoric has become blurred beyond recognition,” the company said today in a statement.
The announcement was made today by Philip S. Birsh, Playbill Chairman and CEO, and Chief Operating Officer Alex Birsh, in a final tweet to its more than than 412,000 followers.
The exit marks a significant blow to what’s commonly known as Theater Twitter, the posters and commenters who relish all things Broadway from official news to backstage gossip. Though Playbill traditionally stayed away from the latter, its presence on the platform has...

The story at the heart of the opera “Carmen” stuck in Benjamin Millepied’s mind from his childhood into his adulthood. With his new film by the same name, the choreographer-turned-director has reimagined George Bizet’s 19th century original into a modern immigration tale set on the present-day U.S./Mexican border. Melissa Barrera plays Carmen and Paul Mescal, her love interest, Aidan.
Millepied, Barrera and Mescal stopped by TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto International Film Festival to speak with TheWrap’s Editor in Chief Sharon Waxman about adapting the tragic love story about a femme fatale for modern audiences while remaining true to Carmen’s character.
“This [is a] story that we’ve seen over and over and over about, you know, people crossing the border to freedom to seek safety, to seek a better life, running away from danger,” Barrera said. “The reason that...

‘Corsage’ Star Vicky Krieps on Playing a ‘Princess Imprisoned in the Image of Being a Woman’ (Video)
Vicky Krieps, the actress from Luxembourg who introduced herself to a new audience by playing a headstrong woman in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread,” has come to TIFF 2022 with “Corsage,” a drama about a woman Krieps has felt a connection to since she was 15: Austrian Empress Elisabeth.
Krieps and director Maria Kreutzer stopped by TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto Film Festival to talk about “Corsage,” which follows the Empress (Krieps) on her 40th birthday, an age that, according to 19th century Bavarian society, made her an old woman. Feeling increasingly isolated by both royal circles and her own husband, Emperor Franz Joseph (Florian Teichtmeister), Elisabeth finds herself imprisoned by her own elite status and starts looking for any way to rebel against it, no matter how small.

One comment kept getting repeated at the inaugural IndieWire Honors ceremony last night in Los Angeles: “This is so IndieWire.” It began with the venue — No Name, a hush-hush spot resembling a kind of gothic speakeasy where attendees are discouraged from taking too many photos, lest they give away its secrets — and continued with everything from the drink menu (New Fashioned Franco, Sparkling Kruger) to host Nick Thune’s jokes (“The venue has asked if anyone has an iPhone 4 — they’re just suggesting an upgrade”).
Indeed, the event bore only a superficial resemblance to most year-end soirées. The honorees — Mary J. Blige, Kumail Nanjiani, Sterling K. Brown, James Franco, Diane Kruger, and Issa Rae — had all been announced in advance, so there was no tension over whose names were sealed inside any envelopes. Transformers The Last Knight released a new poster that gives some more clues and raises more questions.
So I’ve been critical of Transformers movies because I’m a fan and I just want the best for them. Like a father that sees his child doing something he hopes they’ll grow out of. Like Nickelback. Didn’t they do a song for a Transformers movie? I’m getting off topic. So here’s the poster and then let’s take a deeper dive.
“Rethink your heroes.” Okay here goes. I think there’s potential in this. Look I’m sure that thing in the background is Unicron and Optimus is his herald hence the purple eyes. Look Unicron being introduced was a huge event in the Transformers lore. It changed the game for us every time that a bot got bigger. Whether it was a combiner or a city...

Donald Trump has once again addressed the sexual assault allegations that have been made against him, saying they are “all 100 percent, totally and completely fabricated” and that he has “no idea who these women are.”
“It’s a phony deal, I have no idea who these women are, and I think you all know I have no idea,” he told the crowd at a rally in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Friday.
He later added that the claims were “in just about all cases, nonsense.”
Trump also attacked his accusers, singling out some of the women, including People writer Natasha Stoynoff.

Septuagenarian firebrand Marco Bellocchio turns a critical eye at once sentimental and ironic to Italian men’s relationship to their mothers in Sweet Dreams, an inspired adaptation of a memoir by journalist Massimo Gramellini. Beginning with the dewy-eyed memories of a young Massimo in a halcyon 1960s, the boy dances, nestles and accompanies his mother everywhere, until her early and suspicious death sends him through the decades a man quietly emotionally and psychologically impaired—solitary, withdrawn, uncommitted. Or would he be like that anyway?Bellocchio slyly balances the swooning syrup of a boy’s longing for his mother with a man’s hang-ups in adulthood, his romances and career. After moving into his teenage years, the film jumps to the 1990s when Massimo, by then a sportswriter celebrated for his simple, direct and emotionless writing, encounters a Mephistophelean millionaire whose sudden death, rhyming with that of Massimo’s mother, sends...

The critical response to Suicide Squad has been pretty harsh. It has a 26% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is an aggregate score from multiple film critics. This led to a petition to shut down the website before the film was released. It's interesting how film critics who study film in school and watch movies obsessively would have such a different opinion on the last three DC cineverse films than general audiences. This had lead to some tinfoil hat fanboys theorizing a massive conspiracy to give the DC cineverse films bad reviews.
Joey Paur, GeekTyrant's Editor in Chief loved the film and thought it was "Freakin' Awesome" and gave it an 8/10. Some of the GeekTyrant team has seen it and these are their mini-reviews.
Derek Campbell from the Tyrant Nation podcast:
"Saw Suicide Squad last night. The critics are still unnecessarily harsh in my opinion, but to agree with them, there were definitely problems.

Star Wars Celebration is still rolling and on Day 2 let’s hit some video game news. So three different platforms are available currently with Star Wars: Battlefront, Star Wars: Galactic Heroes, and Star Wars: The Old Republic.
If you’ve never heard me say this my favorite part of Star Wars has always been the ships and the space combat. I bought the Nintendo GameCube just to play the Roque Squadron game. The Starfighter series on PlayStation picked up all of them and played every single ship in there. Now I was disappointed with Battlefront and the lack of more of those stages that were strictly space combat. Well we’ve already seen Dlc incorporating Bespin and Cloud City but now I’ve gotten my wish. We’re getting a Death Star battle with Star Wars: Battlefront Death Star.
Can you type an article while screaming loudly for 5 minutes?...
