After seven years of toil and trouble, a cancelation by Disney, and resurrection by Annapurna and Netflix, Nd Stevenson’s Nimona is finally ready to make a splash on the small screen. Nimona is a larger-than-life tale of identity, othering, acceptance, and finding ways to stand out in a world that fears what it does not understand. In the film, a knight in a futuristic, medieval world is framed for a crime he didn’t commit. The only one who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona — a mischievous teen who happens to be a shapeshifting creature he’s sworn to destroy. With brilliant animation from Dneg, Nimona leaps off the screen with style, vibrant colors, and attitude.

Just four weeks ago, the Netflix streaming service unveiled a teaser trailer for the animated adventure film Nimona – and since we’re a little over two weeks from the film’s June 30th release date, it makes sense that a full trailer for the movie has now arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Nimona had a bumpy ride on its way to Netflix. The project was scrapped by Blue Sky Studios when it was near completion, then canceled by Fox… but by the end of this month, it will finally be out in the world.
Inspired by Nd Stevenson‘s (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) webcomic-turned-graphic novel, Nimona was directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane from a screenplay by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor. Here’s the synopsis: When Ballister Boldheart, a knight in a futuristic medieval world, is framed for a crime he didn’t commit,...

Following up his semi-autobiographical tale Armageddon Time––a film which sadly seemed to get the short shrift upon release last year––James Gray was developing a John F. Kennedy biopic, but now the filmmaker is shifting gears for a project that will reunite him with Focus Features.
His next film will be Ezekiel Moses, Deadline reports. Written by Keith Bunin, the script appeared on the Black List about a decade ago when Philip Seymour Hoffman became attached to direct it. It’s now in the hands of Gray, who will tell the depression-era ghost story about a young, imaginative boy living in a small town who befriends a mysterious drifter who may or may not have the supernatural ability to communicate with the dead.

Last October, news broke that James Gray‘s follow-up to “Armageddon Time” would be a biopic about John F. Kennedy‘s time in World War II. Now that appears to no longer be the case. Deadline reports that Gray instead will team up again with Focus Features for “Ezekiel Moss,” from a buzzy script by Keith Bunin.

I can’t say I ever would have expected to hear that Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson would direct a live-action/hybrid reimagining of The Aristocats for Disney, but here we are. Deadline reports that Questlove will be getting behind the camera for The Aristocats, which was first revealed more than a year ago.
The original 1970 movie revolved around a family of Parisian felines who discover that they’re set to inherit a fortune from their owner. But when a jealous butler kidnaps them and leaves them in the country, they must find their way back home with the help of a smooth-talking tomcat. Will Gluck (Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway) and Keith Bunin (Onward) are set to pen the script for the live-action adaptation of The Aristocats, with Gluck also producing through his Olive Bridge Entertainment banner. In addition to directing The Aristocats, Questlove will also executive produce the project as well as oversee the music.

"And what do you call the act?" "…The Aristocats!" Okay, so that's not the same film at all, and if you were to confuse The Aristocatswith The Aristocrats, let's just say the therapy bills for the kids could be considerable. But from the sounds of it, Amir "Questlove" Thompson is looking to entertain the family, landing a deal to make his fictional film debut with a live-action/CG version of the Disney classic.
Will Gluck and Keith Bunin have scripted a new take on the 1970 animated film about a family of Parisian felines who learn they are set to inherit a fortune from their owner. When the owner’s jealous butler kidnaps them and leaves them in the country, they must team up with a smooth-talking tomcat to try to make it back home before it’s too late.

When they sang "Ev'rybody wants to be a cat," that apparently included the Academy Award and six-time Grammy Award-winner, Questlove. In news first reported by Deadline, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson is set to direct a live-action/animation hybrid remake of "The Aristocats" for the House of Mouse. The film is being compared to similar hybrid films like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Space Jam: A New Legacy," featuring live-action performers crossed with CGI. There's no word yet on whether or not this means the titular cats will look like CGI updates of their animated origins, or if this will be another semi-realistic uncanny valley adventure similar to Disney's recent remake of "The Lion King."
Admittedly, the timing of this announcement is somewhat suspicious, as Disney also announced that they'd be laying off roughly 7,000 employees starting this week. It's a shame that the news of Questlove's "The Aristocats" remake is coming on the...

Disney is giving The Aristocats the remake treatment, and they’ve tapped Questlove — one of the coolest cats in the biz — to direct.
According to Variety, the update of the 1970 classic will be a blend of live-action and CGI. A couple other flicks that have tried this method in the past few years include Sonic the Hedgehog and Space Jam: A New Legacy, two movies that had somewhat tumultuous rollouts. (Consequence didn’t love either upon their releases.) Hopefully this one goes over more smoothly!
Questlove is also executive producing and overseeing the music for the Aristocats revamp. Peter Rabbit filmmaker Will Gluck and Pixar’s Onward writer Keith Bunin are adapting the screenplay, which is about a family of posh felines who get kidnapped by their owner’s butler in an attempt to steal the cats’ inheritance.

Everybody wants to be a cat, but not a ton of people want to direct cats. Count Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson in that rarefied latter group, because the Oscar winner behind “Summer of Soul” is making his narrative debut with a remake of the Disney animated feature “The Aristocats,” IndieWire has confirmed.

Which Brings Me To You tells the story of Jane (Hale), a freelance journalist, and Will (Wolff), a photographer, who are immediately drawn to each other at a mutual friend’s wedding. After the pair sneak off to hook up in the coat room, all signs point to an empty one-night stand. Instead, over the next 24 hours, they share stories of their most embarrassing sexual encounters, first loves, heartbreak and whirlwind romances, discovering each other through hilarious and sometimes tragic tales. If you asked your average non-Daniel Radcliffe super-fan what they thought of his movie "Horns," they would probably give you a blank or confused look. Director Alexandre Aja's horror-comedy bombed at the box office in 2013, grossing a meager 3.9 million. Critics were also tepid on the film as a whole, although it certainly has its admirers. Their ranks include /Film's Hannah Shaw-Williams, who included "Horns" among her favorite movies of all time. Calling it a "a strangely lovely film about finding that one oasis of happiness in an ugly world," Hannah argued that Aja, Radcliffe, and writer Keith Bunin "miraculously"...

“Pretty Little Liars” star Lucy Hale is set to reunite with “The Hating Game” director Peter Hutchings for romantic comedy “Which Brings Me to You.”
The film is an adaptation of Julianna Baggott and Steve Almond’s novel about a journalist and a photographer who, instead of a one-night stand, spend 24 hours sharing their romantic histories in the coat room at a friend’s wedding.
Hutchings will direct from a screenplay by Keith Bunin (“Onward”) with the film set to shoot this summer.

Here's a novel idea: a live-action movie about talking cats. Even better? It's a live-action Disney remake!
Disney is going back to the well of its 1970s animated slump with a live-action remake of "The Aristocats." The original film, which Wolfgang Reitherman directed between "The Jungle Book" and "Robin Hood," centered on cats in Paris who stand to inherit money until their owner's butler kidnaps them and strands them in the French countryside.
Deadline reports that a live-action take on "The Aristocats" is indeed in development. Things are still in the early stages, but writer-director Will Gluck and screenwriter Keith Bunin are attached to it and will pen the script. Gluck has a...

A live-action adaptation of the classic animated film “The Aristocats” is in early development at Disney, Variety has confirmed.
“Peter Rabbit” director Will Gluck and “Onward” writer Keith Bunin are set to pen the script, with Gluck also producing via his Olive Bridge Entertainment banner.
The original 1970 film follows a family of aristocratic cats — mother Duchess and her three kittens Berlioz, Marie and Toulouse — living a luxurious life in Paris. But when their owner’s butler finds out that the cats are set to receive a massive fortune, he kidnaps them and abandons them in an unfamiliar land — the country. The aristocats then must befriend an alley cat, named Thomas O’Malley, to help them get home before the butler steals what is rightfully theirs.
Directed by core Disney animator Wolfgang Reitherman, the original voice cast included Phil Harris, Eva Gabor, Hermione Baddeley, Dean Clark, Sterling Holloway, Scatman Crothers and Roddy Maude-Roxby.

Exclusive: Disney doesn’t look to be slowing down any time soon when it comes to adapting classic animated pics into live-action features. Sources tell Deadline that an adaptation of The Aristocats is in early development with the studio’s live-action team. The film is based on the 1970 animated pic, which followed a family of Parisian felines who learn they are set to inherit a fortune from their owner. When the owner’s jealous butler kidnaps them and leaves them in the country, they must team up with a smooth-talking tomcat to try to make it back home before it’s too late.

Based on his original idea, Onward scribe Keith Bunin is set to write the screenplay, the storyline of which is under wraps.
Gluck counts over $782M WW at the global box office, his most recent hit being Peter Rabbit which grossed over $351M WW. The sequel he directed, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, which was delayed due to Covid, is scheduled to hit theaters on June 11.

Not just one of the best animated films of the year, Pixar’s “Onward” sits as one of the best animated films, period. Beautifully inventive and narratively rich, “Onward” stands as one of the awards season’s most underrated gems, especially with its story.
One of the last films to be seen in theaters before the Covid-19 pandemic, the film has been in the thick of the awards race for best animated feature. As Pixar always does, the film is much more than its visuals. The movie features wonderful voice performances from its cast, including Tom Holland, Chris Pratt and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Mychael and Jeff Danna’s inventive score and a wonderful original number “Carried Me With You,” written by Brandi Carlile and Phil and Tim Hanseroth. Dan Scanlon, Jason Headley and Keith Bunin’s screenplay hits all the emotional chords, especially in the film’s big finale.

In what is the first of two Pixar films released this year, the animation giant’s latest film Onward has had a few hurdles in front of it. Despite some clear influences, the film is an original work from Pixar and thus takes a bit more selling than, say, Toy Story 4 but ahead of release it didn’t quite get the major promotional push others have and there have been a few controversies surrounding a van and Lgbt content! As the Covid-19 pandemic halts the human world, Onward’s struggle is now certified, but I urge readers to check out the film (which will be arriving on digital platforms and TV box office soon) because, in spite of it not perhaps challenging the studio’s greatest work, Onward is great fun and has a massive heart hat’s much needed right now.

Spoiler Warning: This article discusses major plot elements and the ending of “Onward”
There was a point during the making of “Onward” that Pixar director Dan Scanlon was afraid he was oversharing. Maybe he was putting too much of his own memories of growing up without his father into this story about two elven brothers in a magical world dealing with the same loss. But his colleagues at Pixar encouraged him to put more of himself into his work, and he credits that supportive environment at the hallowed animation studio for helping him create a movie that has already gotten him praise from audiences for its emotional resonance.
“I felt very comfortable talking about personal stuff and being vulnerable because that’s what the other artists here wanted to hear and got excited about,” Scanlon said. “My filmmaking partner Kori Rae and my co-writer Keith Bunin told me at one point,...

Disney-Pixar’s fantasy film “Onward” will cast a spell on North American moviegoers this weekend, opening with $38 million to $40 million at 4,310 locations, early estimates showed on Friday.
The figure is slightly below pre-release forecasts, which had pegged “Onward” for a launch in the $40 million to $45 million range. The movie centers on a pair of teenage elf brothers — voiced by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland — on a quest to resurrect their deceased father, who had arranged for them to receive a magic staff with a spell that will bring him back for 24 hours.
Ben Affleck’s sports drama “The Way Back” is projected to make around $8 million at 2,718 venues for the weekend, in line with forecasts, which had ranged from $6 million to $10 million.
Universal’s sophomore frame of Elisabeth Moss’ “The Invisible Man,” which has taken in $35 million in its first six days in North America, will finish second with about $14 million.

How good is Pixar at making audiences cry in the last 10 minutes of a movie? So good that the studio serves up a moving finale to “Onward” when everything that comes before that ending has been rather spotty, particularly when compared to the studio’s greatest achievements.
It’s the same strategy behind a band saving its hit songs for the encore — make the audience leave on a high and they’ll forget the less successful parts — but while the film’s sentimental climax will have filmgoers walking into the lobby still dabbing away their tears, it doesn’t entirely expiate “Onward” of its many flaws.
The film is set in a world where magic once thrived, where pegasuses shared the sky with dragons while centaurs roamed the land. Then someone invented the light bulb, and the denizens of this reality decided electrical engineering was easier to learn than wizardry,...

Disney and Pixar’s “Onward,” the latest original film from the animation studio after several years of blockbuster sequels, made $2 million at the box office in Thursday night previews. It opens on over 4,200 screens this weekend. This adds to the sneak peak total of $650,000 the film brought in on Leap Day.
“Onward” is one of two original films Pixar has planned for this year, the other being “Soul” this summer. That makes “Onward” the first Pixar movie released in the spring, and also the first original title the studio has put out since “Coco” in 2017. Projections for the movie are sitting around $45 million, but it could climb higher up to at least $50 million if word of mouth is strong, and the A-list cast of “Avengers” alums Tom Holland and Chris Pratt voicing the leads shouldn’t hurt either.

For animation feature fans it’s been a long cold couple of months since the Christmas Day release of Spies In Disguise. Well, the drought is finally over. This weekend sees the first big studio feature animated flick of 2020, and we’re not counting Sonic The Hedgehog or Call Of The Wild which had CGI stars (or co-stars) working with humans against mostly real backdrops. And it’s the “jackpot” for fans because it’s from the talented folks from Emeryville, CA: Pixar. Though it’s a tad early (they generally release their works in Summer or close to the end of the year), it’s because it’s the first time in five years that they’ve got two flicks in the same year (Soul arrives in June). Oh, and another reason to be interested: this is the first original, non-sequel in over two years (it was franchise time...

A new era at Pixar begins this weekend with the release of “Onward,” the first of two original films coming this year from the hallowed, Disney-owned animation studio. It’s a big shift for Pixar after a decade in which it released multiple sequels that grossed billions worldwide, and expectations for this newcomer’s box office run are far more tempered.
The last two Pixar releases, “Toy Story 4” and “Incredibles 2,” both earned opening weekends of over $100 million and global totals of over $1 billion, joining “Toy Story 3” and “Finding Dory” in a quartet of sequels that hit those marks in the 2010s. Overall, seven of the 11 Pixar films in the last decade were sequels, and of the four that were original films, only one had an opening weekend of over $70 million: the Oscar-winning “Inside Out,” which opened to $90 million in summer 2015.

Watching the trailer for Pixar’s Onward a few months ago in a theater packed with children was an odd experience. The film, about teenage elfs on a magical quest, seemed like an eyebrow-raiser–an ultra-high concept animated entry that looked more Sony or DreamWorks than Pixar. (Those are not compliments.) Its central conceit–a spell brings back the elves’ late father for one day, but only the lower half of his body–seemed downright scary for little ones. It also seemed way more Weekend at Bernie’s than one would expect from the titans behind Toy Story and Finding Nemo. In other words, Onward appeared to be more Good Dinosaur than Inside Out.
Those fears were misplaced. Of course they were. Like James Cameron, Pixar should never be doubted. The studio’s remarkably consistent success continues with Onward, a delightful, genuinely moving film about children, siblings, and parents who...

Even when a new Pixar movie isn’t up to, well, Pixar’s regular high standards, there is still animated magic to be had. That’s the case with Onward, a sweet-silly-slapdash tale about two pointy-earred elves: shy, introverted, teenaged Ian Lightfoot (voiced by Spider-Man Tom Holland) and his blustering, bumbling older brother Barley (voiced by Star-Lord Chris Pratt). Both boys have daddy issues since the old man died a few years back — not surprising, given that parents tend to have a high mortality rate in the Disney/Pixar universe.

If there’s one thing you can bank on when it comes to Pixar, it’s emotion. No matter the story that they’re telling, the animation experts will seek to bring you to tears. It’s one of the reasons why they’ve become the industry leader in making films that, while aimed at kids on the surface, are really speaking to adults. Onward, opening this week, is just the latest example of that. Children will see a romp with creative designs, while grown ups will be wrecked by the emotional message at its core. It’s another one of Pixar’s top notch efforts, starting off the year with a definite Best Animated Feature contender. The film is an animated adventure, steeped in fantasy and magic. Long ago, the world was filled with magic, but as modern technology came into play, that was cast aside for convenience. We...

“Long ago”, the opening of monologue in Disney Pixar’s latest, Onward, begins, “the world was full of wonder.” Magic ruled the world, the voice explains, and creatures of all shapes and sizes populated it, expressing courage and generosity in every form, despite their (many) physical differences. Seemingly every new day brought another tale of inspiration and wonder, and a chance for every generation to live these wonderful stories together.
Dan Scanlon, the longtime Disney animator and director whose early-career credits include Pocahontas 2, The Little Mermaid 2, The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 and 101 Dalmatians 2, clearly knows a thing or two about the lengths we can go to recreate that magic – and the depths into which it can lead us. Onward is his sophomore film as a director; Scanlon had previously written and directed Monsters University. The notion of a sacred, long-gone heritage nowadays understood only in the form of decrepit artefacts...

Disney-Pixar’s fantasy film “Onward” is heading for a respectable $45 million opening on the March 6-8 weekend, early tracking showed Thursday.
“Onward” is directed by Dan Scanlon from a script he wrote with Keith Bunin and Jason Headley. The story centers on a pair of teenage elf brothers — voiced by Chris Pratt and Tom Holland — setting on a quest to resurrect their dead father, who had arranged for them to receive a magic staff with a spell that will bring him back for only 24 hours so his sons can meet him.
Octavia Spencer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Lena Waithe and Ali Wong are also in the voice cast. Scanlon’s directing credits include “Monsters University.”
Prospects are dim for Ben Affleck’s sports drama “The Way Back,” which also opens on March 6. Early tracking has come in at under $10 million.
