Is one football game big enough for two different networks?
NBC and Fox both intend to broadcast the (new) inaugural game from the Usfl, the latest in a series of efforts to launch a spring football league that can soak up attention while the NFL is on its usual hiatus. Under an agreement unveiled Tuesday, NBC Sports will provide pregame, halftime and postgame coverage of a game between the New Jersey Generals and the Birmingham Stallions, while Fox Sports will produce coverage of the match-up itself. Both networks will carry the full event, and the same commercials will run on both Fox and NBC.
Both NBC and Fox have multi-year rights deals with the Usfl, with NBC Sports set to air 22 games in 2022, nine on NBC, nine on USA and four via Peacock. Fox Sports is slated to carry 22 games, with 14 on Fox and eight on cable’s Fox Sports...

Karina Smirnoff hasn’t been on “Dancing with the Stars” in five years, but if she were to return, it would not be in pursuit of another Mirrorball trophy. “I would definitely enjoy judging,” Smirnoff told Parade.com. “I don’t know if I would go back as a dancer. I think there’s a right time in life for everything.”
The pro spent 18 seasons on “Dancing,” winning Season 13 with J.R. Martinez, and last competed on Season 22 in spring 2016 with Doug Flutie, where they finished in ninth place. Smirnoff, who stars in the new film “Tango Shalom,” left when her contract was up to return to the world of competitive dancing.

The United States Football League, that mid-1980s counterpart to NFL play, is returning.
The league will relaunch in the spring of 2022, with Fox Sports signing on as a broadcast partner and minority stakeholder in the company that owns the new sports entity.
Longtime sports fans may recall an era when the New Jersey Generals, Memphis Showboats and Houston Gamblers took to the field for three seasons between 1983 and 1985. Herschel Walker and Doug Flutie were among some of the Usfl’s standouts and Donald Trump was a part owner of the New York team. The concept has taken on new momentum in an era when more media companies have been testing the prospect of running football games in the spring when the NFL is in its off-season.

There’s an inherent danger in nostalgia. As we’ve witnessed over the past four years, slogans about some mythical better time in America can come loaded with prejudice. Those good ol’ days weren’t all that great for everyone.
But there are some anachronistic artifacts that are worth … if not celebrating, then at least marveling at, like curios on a shelf. Hulu’s quirky new mockumentary John Bronco unearths an oldie but a goody: the archetype of the masculine pitchman, that kind of rough-hewn all-American male for whom a thick mustache,...

An early episode of Showtime’s new Nineties-set Boston drama City on a Hill opens with two characters discussing the classic children’s book Make Way for Ducklings (set in Boston Public Garden) and the city’s 1980s school-busing controversy. The only way the series — produced, of course, by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, along with creator Chuck MacLean and the Oz duo of Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson — could more loudly declare its geographic bona fides would be for one of them to mention the time his buddy Sully...

More than 60 percent of readers voted in a recent poll calling for Maksim Chmerkovskiy to be a ‘Dancing with the Stars’ judge. He really, really wants to do it too. By all appearances, ABC is just sticking with the original three judges, Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman and Bruno Tonioli, for the forthcoming all-athletes season, and Chmerkovskiy is otherwise preoccupied with his tour anyway. But if the show were to add another pro as a judge — and if it’s not Chmerkovskiy — who should it be?
Let’s look at six possibilities — all former champs, many of whom have left the show or are/were on extended breaks.
Derek Hough
Obviously the six-time champ can’t be ignored. He’d follow his sister, Julianne Hough, who sat on the judges’ panel from Seasons 19 through 24. Since his last stint on Season 23, Hough has moved on to serve as a judge on NBC’s “World of Dance,...

It’s time to give Dancing With the Stars credit where it’s due.
A few months back, as I compiled my gallery of Season 22 odds, I found it difficult to suppress my scoffs as I scrolled through a seemingly dismal lineup of celebrities. From Geraldo Rivera to Doug Flutie, it seemed as though the Season 22 roster was the ABC series’ least impressive yet, resulting in a general feeling of “meh” as the premiere approached.
Now, to be fair, Geraldo had no business stepping even his pinky toe on the ballroom floor, and Doug — though he exhibited great sportsmanship — was...

A few short weeks from now, when Paige VanZant or Wanyá Morris or Nyle Dimarco hoist that Mirrorball trophy in the air, Monday’s Switch-Up edition of Dancing With the Stars likely won’t be one of the Season 22 memories flashing before their eyes.
Although the traditional partner swap has worked wonders in past seasons, most of Monday’s mixed-up duos suffered from lack of chemistry, communication or — in a few disconcerting cases — proper choreography. (When TVLine compiles its year-end Best and Worst lists, you can expect to see Keo and Len’s Viennese Waltz debate somewhere in the “Most Cringeworthy Moments” section.

That routine was not easy and the music was some of the most difficult I've ever been tasked with choreographing a dance to,...

Switch-Up Week has never been easy on Dancing with the Stars, and that appears to still be true for season 22. "It's kind of like starting at week 1 again," pro dancer Mark Ballas told People on Monday of having to switch partners for the upcoming week of competition. "But that's the nature of the show. there is nothing we can do about it, so there is no use in complaining. We just all get to work!" Instead of being partnered with Ufc fighter Paige VanZant, Ballas will be dancing a Salsa to Eddie Palmieri's "La Malanga" with Good Morning America's Ginger Zee.

It’s fitting that the latest installment of Dancing With the Stars was the series’ annual Disney week, because some routines were absolute beauties, while others were complete beasts.
Tinkerbell dumped heaps of fairy dust on the usual suspects (Nyle Dimarco, Ginger Zee), leaving competitors like Doug Flutie to stumble about like hippos in search of their tutus. Still others, like an exuberant Kim Fields and a stately Von Miller, found their inner zip-a-dee-doo-dah and turned in performances that greatly improved upon previous weeks’ showings.

Last week I was so glad Doug and I could honor his parents, but it was a very emotional rehearsal process and performance night. But that was only five points shy of Nyle Dimarco's first place marks, so with the judges' scores so close, this week's elimination may be decided by which stars were best able to inspire their fans to vote.

Just when I’m starting to feel cynical about the current season of Dancing With the Stars, Tom Bergeron & Co. find a way to melt my cold, icy heart.
Though I’ll never be entirely convinced that Latin Night is the correct Week 2 theme for a gaggle of amateur dancers, even the most inexperienced contestants find a way to impress during Week 3’s “Most Memorable Year” celebration — and what they lack in technique, they more than make up for in raw, unbridled emotion.

Everyone knows Wanya Morris has a voice for the ages - and on Monday's Dancing with the Stars he proved once again he's got the dance moves to back it up. The Boyz II Men star recalled his most memorable year, 1996 when his band performed the National Anthem at the Atlanta Olympics after a terror attack. The group recorded a new version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" to go along with his performance with pro Lindsay Arnold. And the results were electrifying, with judges awarding him with 24 out of 30. (Only Nyle Dimarco and Peta Murgatroyd's 25 out of 30 topped their work). "It...

Follow Smirnoff and her partner Doug Flutie on Twitter!Being in the bottom is never easy - especially at the first elimination show - but I have to admit, it barely even registered that Doug and I were in danger of going home last week. In rehearsal earlier that day, they had only called out two couples as being in the bottom. So Doug and I assumed there were only going to be two couples in jeopardy on the live show.

(Spoiler alert: Please do not read on if you haven’t watched Monday’s episode of “Dancing With the Stars”) The second episode of “Dancing With the Stars” Season 22 on Monday meant that it was time for the first contestant to be sent home. After they all had a dismal premiere outing last week, Geraldo Rivera, Mischa Barton and Doug Flutie landed in the bottom three facing elimination. Surprisingly, former New England Patriots quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Flutie showed a marked improvement on Latin night and managed to escape getting the boot. It seems every season, we go through the same routine: The premiere is jam-packed with high-energy, enthusiastic routines, likely prompting Carrie Ann Inaba to say something like, “I love this season!” or “Season X is going to be amazing!”
And then, Week 2 happens. And that means Latin Night happens.
