The lack of Latino showrunners in Hollywood is being addressed by the Alliance of Latinx Executives and Rise Up who are partnering on an advocacy program that will pair 10 high-level executives with 10 high-level writers from the community to increase showrunner opportunities.
Of the 500+ shows in production during the 2021-22 television season, and the approximately 6K writers employed by those shows, less than 20 Latinx writers held the position of showrunner. It’s the second-most challenging roadblock for Latinx writers after breaking out of the entry-level staff writer position, according to the orgs.
The inaugural group of executives includes Joey Chavez (HBO Max), Tom Lerner (A+E Studios), Adam Martinez (CBS Studios), Alejandro Melendez (BBC Studios), Michelle Mendelovitz (Mattel Television Studios), Edy Mendoza (Netflix), Diana Mogollon (Independent) and Nina Tassler (Independent).

Hulu has canceled its musical rom-com Up Here after a single season.
The cancellation of the series, starring Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes as a would-be couple derailed by both external issues and the (singing) voices in their heads, comes four months after its binge release in late March. It will remain on Hulu, avoiding the fate of some other recent shows pulled from the streamer and sibling Disney+ in cost-cutting moves.
As is the case with most streaming series, detailed viewing data for Up Here isn’t available.
Up Here boasts an impressive creative team, with Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Frozen, Coco) writing original songs and scripts from Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (New Girl) and Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen), all of whom are credited as co-creators. Thomas Kail (Hamilton) directed the first episode.

When Mavis (Michelle Buteau) discovers her boyfriend of five years has been unfaithful, what stings almost as much as the betrayal is the narrative she imagines surrounding it. “If someone cheats on Halle Berry, they’re like, ‘Oh my God, how that man cheat on Halle Berry?'” she laments. “But if someone cheats on someone like me, a thick girl with problem areas? They’re like, ‘Oh yeah, I get it.'”
And though her best friend, Khalil (Tone Bell), gently pushes back on that “silly-ass narrative,” Mavis isn’t entirely wrong: Plus-sized women, and indeed all those who fall outside the straight-cis-white-skinny box, do tend to go ignored or sidelined or disrespected in love stories. Netflix’s Survival of the Thickest is a welcome and too-rare exception — a comedy that puts Mavis front and center as a worthy heroine, with mostly enjoyable results.

Deadline’s Strike Talk podcast is now at Week 8, as we complete a stretch in which the standoff between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers passed the 50-day mark, halfway to the 100-day dispute that decimated Hollywood in 2007 and the 253-day dispute of 1988.
This week, host Billy Ray holds court with The Black List principal and former studio exec Franklin Leonard and three members of the current WGA Negotiating Committee in Yahlin Chang, Danielle Sanchez-Witzel and John August. There is no wavering in their resolve to make a strong deal but also give writers a chance to continue a healthy creative ecosystem by addressing AI, mini-rooms and minimums.
They reveal some compelling information. Ray laments that when he was a member of the negotiating committee how disappointed he and his cohorts were to learn that 33% of membership was making the minimum; that figure is now 50%, he said.

Veteran TV comedy showrunner and member of the WGA Negotiating Committee Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (My Name Is Earl) worked the guild’s picket line at Netflix on Day 1 of the writers strike. She spoke with Deadline about how the negotiations broke down,
Deadline: Danielle, what was it like in the room in the final hours?
Sanchez-witzel: I think that the main takeaway is what didn’t happen in the final hours, which is we didn’t get a fair deal. And I think that’s what we’re there to do. We’ve spent the last six weeks wanting it, trying to get it, and I think what we found was that we were being devalued by the studios, and we’re not going to be okay with that. We’re not going to roll over and say, it is what it is. We fought in 2007-08, I was part of that fight.

Hulu’s Up Here takes as one of its central themes the question of whether it’s possible to ever truly and totally know someone, even from within the depths of true love. It’s woven right there into the theme song: A declarative “I can never know you” is chased by the more wistful “Can I ever know you?”
But for two lovers to struggle to open up to each other is one thing. For an audience to have trouble connecting is another. Up Here has its charms, first and foremost a pair of winning lead performances by Carlos Valdes and Mae Whitman. But there’s a disappointing shallowness to the entire affair, even after all the time spent delving into the characters’ innermost psyches.

In the first trailer for Hulu’s musical comedy series “Up Here,” Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes are young New Yorkers who meet and immediately click … if only they could both silence the voices in their heads telling them they’re doing everything wrong.

Whitman, who starred in NBC’s “Good Girls” from 2018 to 2021 and “Parenthood” from 2010 to 2015. plays idealistic Lindsay. Her musical career includes guest vocals with indie band Fake Problems and singing “Gardenia” with Landon Pigg on a 2010 episode of “Parenthood.”
Valdes, who played Cisco Ramon on The CW series “The Flash,” is the equally self-doubting Miguel. He’s appeared in stage productions of “Jersey Boys,” “Once,” and “Zorba!”

The Writers Guild of America has tapped former presidents David Goodman and Chris Keyser to co-chair the guild’s negotiating committee, leading the fight on what are sure to be difficult bargaining with Hollywood’s major players in the first half of next year.
The WGA’s master contract covering most film and TV production is set to expire on May 1. With numerous economic issues and concerns about working conditions for middle-class writers, the negotiations are expected to be intense at a time when the TV and film sectors are in the throes of a messy transition to internet-delivered content on an increasingly on-demand basis.
Goodman, a showrunner known for his work with Seth MacFarlane on “Family Guy” and “The Orville,” is revered among WGA membership for successfully waging a three-year campaign against the top talent agencies that allowed the guild to ban the practice of agencies receiving packaging fees...

It follows the extraordinary story of one ordinary couple, as they fall in love – and discover that the single greatest obstacle to finding happiness together might just be themselves – and the treacherous world of memories, obsessions, fears, and fantasies that lives inside their heads.
Valdes will play Miguel. Sensitive and thoughtful, with an artistic sensibility and a romantic streak, Miguel has always struggled with the feeling that he doesn’t quite belong. But after a cataclysmic break-up, Miguel has decided to reinvent himself, burying his feelings and ditching a promising career as a video game concept artist for the lucrative world of investment banking, determined never to get hurt again.

The Nate Bargatze comedy, penned by Bargatze, Carmichael, Katcher and Bargatze’s writing partner Dan Shaki, was originally set up at Fox during the 2017-18 development season with a put pilot commitment. It did not go to pilot and was pursued by ABC, which had been looking to work with Carmichael and was on the market for blue-collar, Middle America family comedies. Ah, women, that misunderstood demographic — what do they want anyway? In its mad and misguided scramble to appeal to female audiences, Hollywood is unsurprisingly seriously lacking inspiration. Gone are the days when a writer could simply give the leading lady a consummate bachelor to reform, throw in a career-making magazine assignment or traumatic brain injury, and let the games begin. These days, the decision-making men know it can’t be all about love, and the trend has shifted to another slightly less insulting but just as generic topic: Female friendship. While this worked for genuinely funny hits like “Bridesmaids” and “Girls Trip,” which put comedy front and center, their countless copy-cats, such as “Rough Night,” “Ocean’s Eight,” and “The Hustle,” have landed with a thud.

Its economic message might be fuzzy. Its feminism, too. But best-friend comedy “Like a Boss” rides Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrnes’s frisky and believable chemistry to laughs — some worn, some crude, but more than a few delivered deftly and consistently enough to keep audiences smiling if not doubled over.
The two share the house Mia inherited, the one where Mel came to live as a teen when her own family cratered. They were enterprising girls who grew into inventive businesswomen, all the while remaining best friends. They complete each other. Yes, in the rom-com sense, the film — directed by Miguel Arteta — makes clear. Friendship can be one of the great romances, after all.
Owners of their own cosmetics line and boutique, Mia and Mel’s deep affection is tested when cosmetics titan Claire Luna, played by Salma Hayek, swoops in to invest in their self-named company. They are nearly $500,000 in debt,...

In the trailer for “Like a Boss,” Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne play two best friends rising in the fashion industry who turn to a beauty queen played by Salma Hayek for help, only for things to get ugly fast.
Haddish and Byrne have a successful business, but they’re deep in debt. And though Hayek motivates them to take charge, she’s really just out to steal their ideas and business. Soon they’re throwing punches, dangling from perilous railings and even smashing breasts together as they all try to prove they’re the boss.
“You don’t have to worry your pretty little head,” Haddish says to Hayek. “My head is not little. It’s just that my breasts are humongous,” she replies.
