Don’t remember the supergroup the Buzzin’ Cousins? You’re not alone. Despite featuring five architects of Americana music, the collaboration remains a blind spot for most music fans, even those who may be hardcore devotees of the artists involved.
And what a group of names they were: John Mellencamp, Dwight Yoakam, Joe Ely, James McMurtry, and John Prine made up the Buzzin’ Cousins, Mellencamp’s lark of an answer to the Travelin’ Wilburys. The band’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-them status was by design, Mellencamp said.

What happens when you wrangle some of the finest, most critically acclaimed musicians today, fly them to New Zealand and get them to collaborate on an album and live concert? Well, you'll find out in the music documentary "The Sun Came Out," a look behind the curtain at a pretty phenomenal undertaking all done in the name of charity.
In 2001 Neil Finn, lead singer and founder of Crowded House, gathered folks like Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Phil Selway and Ed O'Brien from Radiohead, Sebastian Steinberg of Soul Coughing and Lisa Germano, and they staged three successful charity concerts under the moniker 7 Worlds Collide. Seven years later at Piha on the wild west coast of Auckland, Neil did it again, this time inviting Wilco and KT Tunstall to the line-up, and in addition to three concerts, they recorded a double album of new songs in just three weeks.

July 27, 2010: Recently, Phil Selway from Radiohead confirmed that their fresh album is still in the pipeline and songs are yet to be written.
Selway also spoke largely about his sorrowful folk album called Familial. The album is supposed to be out on August 31. He also says that his role in the band is a little shadowy and a little obscure.
His album promises to be an interesting stroll of Nick Drake kind folk tunes. The album would also have a host of guest spots filled by the likes of Lisa Germano and Wilco’s Glenn Kotche. Pat Sansone would also be one of the artists, who would appear a guest.

New Zealand’s venerable Neil Finn—best known as the frontman for Crowded House—has a history of assembling ad hoc supergroups that dates back to his Rock Party project in the ’80s. He’s used the 7 Worlds Collide name twice now, once for a live album benefiting Medicins Sans Frontiers in 2001 and now for The Sun Came Out, which reunites most of those players for a studio-bound sequel benefiting Oxfam. This time out, KT Tunstall and most of Wilco round out a cast that also includes 7 Worlds Collide vets Tim Finn, Johnny Marr, Lisa Germano, and ...

“Yellow” + bluegrass = Greencards
That’s not just a clever name: The Greencards are two Aussies and a Brit who formed a string band in Austin before moving to Nashville. They enrich American bluegrass with both an international musical range and a restlessness that distinguishes them from Nickel Creek and The Duhks. Their fourth album, Fascination, may be their most inventive yet, jetting from traditional instrumentals like “Little Siam” to more experimental numbers like “Water in the Well.” Eamon McLoughlin and Kym Warner use fiddles and mandolins as a rhythm section, plucking out beats on their strings, while Carol Young sings in her burnished soprano. Producer Jay Joyce, who has worked with Patty Griffin and Lisa Germano, creates a panoramic canvas to accommodate The Greencards’ zigzagging brushstrokes, but occasionally—especially on the overly ambient “Into the Blue”—the trio’s ambitions exceed their abilities. Overall, though, this musically curious album more...
