First things first. This isn’t a first issue. Yes, I know it says Issue 1 on the front, but normally that’s to tell new readers it’s a book you can safely jump aboard as a newbie. This isn’t one of those. We do get legendary Spidey creators Dan Slott and Mark Bagley, either of which would be worth jumping on board for, and we do get a storyline titled ‘End of the Spider-Verse’ which, again, would be enough to make me jump on board. If you are a new reader, though, you may need to do a little catch-up before you throw yourself into this, there’s a whole lot of stuff going on.
For everyone else, let’s go.
From the very first two pages, you can see this is a new Peter Parker for modern tastes.

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #1

For nearly every massively popular superhero, chances are there’s an equally popular love interest behind that hero. Iron Man loves Pepper Potts, Superman loves Lois Lane, and Spider-Man loves…okay, he’s loved a couple people over the years. Gwen Stacy, Peter’s first love, cared for Peter but hated Spider-Man, a dynamic that would have inevitably doomed the relationship, even if the Green Goblin hadn’t sent her to an early grave. Black Cat represent the dangerous, thrill-seeking side of Spider-Man’s life. She was the opposite of Gwen: Black Cat loved the Spider, but had no interest in his Peter Parker persona, a fact that Peter himself couldn’t reconcile. Mary Jane Watson, however, was what many readers consider to be Peter’s ultimate love interest,...

Amazing Spider-Man #1

At an overstuffed 64 pages, Marvel spares no expense to welcome back Peter Parker as Spider-Man in Amazing Spider-Man #1. There is a lead story with Spider-Man naked half the time, and six backup stories that re-introduce villains, like Electro and Black Cat, catch up with allies like Kaine, or tell a story set in Peter’s past. This is a lot of material to tackle in one review, but overall, Amazing Spider-Man #1 is a strong reintroduction to Peter Parker as Spider-Man. There is a big emphasis on humor as basically every...

2013 was a big year for comics, both mainstream and independent. DC celebrated Superman’s 75th birthday with the launch of the much hyped (and delayed) Superman Unchained by superstar creators Scott Snyder and Jim Lee. There were also the big crossover events “Trinity War” and its follow up Forever Evil which will continue into 2014. This year also marked the return of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and other great Vertigo series, like Scott Snyder’s The Wake and Jeff Lemire’s Trillium.Marvel celebrated the X-Men’s 50th anniversary with the time-traveling event “Battle of the Atom” and the launch of Brian Wood’s X-Men, which featured an all female lineup. Marvel had its share of big events (Age of Ultron, Infinity), but it also found room for quirky, offbeat books, like Hawkeye, Young Avengers, and Superior Foes of Spider-Man. 2013 was an especially huge year for Image Comics. It enlisted big name creators like Matt Fraction,...

Guardians of the Galaxy Issue #1
Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Penciller: Steve McNiven
Cover by Steve McNiven, John Dell, & Justin Ponsor
Publisher: Marvel
Brian Michael Bendis’ much anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy, the newest of the Marvel Now! relaunches, proves just how great obscurity can be. How great is the comic exactly? Using an interstellar-expletive straight from its pages, I’d say Bendis’ Guardians of the Galaxy is Mother Krutacking Fantastic!
With a new film in development, Marvel has put a lot of stock into Guardians of the Galaxy, one of the strangest, least known superhero teams in the expansive Marvel Universe. It may seem like a risky move, but the fact is, the Guardians are a fascinating group of characters, offering expansive scope to a Marvel team dynamic that reaches far beyond the often earth-based exploits of most other superhero assemblies. Not here. The Guardians are one of the...

Okay, Okay, I came back to the mini series I chewed out last month for being a big old waste of time and being an unnecessary addition to an already vast Marvel crossover event. I’ll put my hands up. Captain America vs Gambit intrigued me. What can I say, I love that Cajun.
As suspected this battle isn’t all that tough for Captain America. I mean, come on, Gambit’s awesome but no one expected a win here right? That said, the Ragin’ Cajun gives it a bloody good shot, even with Captain America disregarding the threat of the kinetically charged X-Man for the most part. Gambit’s attacks here just end up promoting his worth to...

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this March. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.8 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant pile of Christmas tinsel since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The first fill-in artist on Justice League, although Gene Ha is certainly no slouch in that department. We also have new writers on Firestorm and Green Arrow, new backups in Justice League and Action Comics, and the DC 52 hits lucky number 7.
Shall we see who is the fariest of them all? Oh indeedy, let’s do!
As usual, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this February. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.9 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant stack of returned copies of Holy Terror since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.
Shall we? Surely!

Saturday night I saw Everybody Was in the French Resistance… Now at The Casbah in San Diego and it was wonderful. The band is a side project for Art Brut frontman Eddie Argos and Dyan Valdes of The Blood Arm where the two respond to pop songs. For example, they’ve written a hilarious response to Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean” in the form of “Billy’s Genes,” told from the prospective of the illegitimate son in question. Or how about “G.I.R.L.F.R.E.N.,” a response to Avril Lavigne’s kind of mean “Girlfriend”? Yes, we all need this in our lives.
