A petition for the divorce of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife MacKenzie was filed Thursday, with Amazon saying in a SEC filing that as part of the deal MacKenzie will receive about 4% of the company, or 25% of the couple’s total stock.
The online giant’s current market cap today is about $892 billion, meaning MacKenzie’s shares in the company will be worth around $36 billion as of today’s trading, instantly making her one of the richest women in the world.
As part of the agreement, Bezos will have voting control of the shares, and she will give him her stakes in the Washington Post and their rocket company Blue Origin.

After Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos announced their plans to divorce after 25 years of marriage, Amazon investors have reacted with a shrug, with the company’s stock price essentially flat in mid-day trading today.
Even so, the news puts the fortune of the world’s richest man and the ownership structure of an era-defining, global powerhouse in a state of flux.
The Bezoses tweeted Wednesday that after “a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends.” (See their full statement below.) They have yet to file any official paperwork with the courts, confirming expectations that they will seek to handle the matter privately so as to avoid attracting unwanted attention to the company.
President Donald Trump, who has frequently attacked Bezos and Amazon while in office, was asked by reporters about the divorce today. “Well, I wish him luck.

Shaquille O’Neal, former NBA basketball player and Hall of Fame inductee, is currently a sports analyst on the television program, Inside the NBA, and is considered one of the greatest players in NBA history. Look out, Jeffrey Katzenberg. Your throne as Hollywood’s fundraiser-in-chief just got a nudge. Heavy industry turnout: Deborah Marcus of Cis La, Bet Founder Robert Johnson, Lauren Johnson, CAA’s Richard Lovett, and Mirage and Wynn Resorts co-founder Elaine Wynn (Getty Images) Instead of working his day job helping steer the careers of award winners like Meryl Streep, Jennifer Aniston, and James Corden, CAA managing director Kevin Huvane steered a litany of industry notables to Brentwood this week to fill the coffers for the high school dropout prevention organization Communities In Schools. $800,000 later, I’d say they got the right guy.

The Kennedy Centers Honors is expanding the selection process by welcoming suggestions from the public. Last year, various advocacy groups pointed out that only two Hispanics -- Placido Domingo (2000) and Chita Rivera (2002) -- numbered among the 185 people feted to date. Rivera is to be part of a new committee that will winnow down the list of potential recipients from 20 to 10. Joining her are 2011 honoree Yo Yo Ma; opera singer Harolyn Blackwell and ballet dancer Damian Woetzel who sit on the Artist Committee; and board members Cappy McGarr and Elaine Wynn. The Artist Committee, which comes up with the original list of 20, is to be expanded as well to ensure the broadest of representation. And the public can petition the committee with their choices. However, even with these new mechanisms in place, the five honorees still will be determined by the executive committee of the Kennedy Center board of trustees. They...

Washington — The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has a new process to select artists who receive one of the nation's top arts prizes, the Kennedy Center Honors, after an outside group last year said Latinos have been largely excluded.
Under the revised process, the Kennedy Center will begin seeking recommendations from the public for the first time in the award's 35-year history. Recommendations can be submitted online beginning Thursday. The center will also seek more recommendations from a committee of artists.
To narrow the roster of potential honorees, the center is forming a new Special Honors Committee. Former honorees Chita Rivera and Yo-Yo Ma will serve on the panel, along with opera singer Harolyn Blackwell, dancer Damian Woetzel and two center board members, Elaine Wynn and Cappy McGarr. From there, the Kennedy Center chairman, president and award producers will create slates of potential honorees to balance the selections across artistic disciplines,...
