London, Oct 18 (Ians) Indian-origin British author and academic Preti Taneja has won the 2022 Gordon Burn Prize for “Aftermath”, her “unflinching work of narrative non-fiction”.
The Gordon Burn Prize celebrates the year’s most dazzlingly bold and forward-thinking fiction and non-fiction written in English.
“Aftermath” was selected by a panel of judges, made up of sportswriter and columnist Jonathan Liew, author Denise Mina (chair), broadcaster Stuart Maconie, artist and poet Heather Phillipson, and writer Chitra Ramaswamy.
The book strives to make sense of the London Bridge stabbing in 2019, when Usman Khan, 28, was a convicted terrorist who spent eight years in prison and went on to kill two people, Saskia Jones and Jack Merritt.
Taneja realised she had taught Khan creative writing when he was in prison, and Jack Merritt, one of the victims, was her colleague.

The 15th edition of the Glasgow Film Festival kicked off on Wednesday night with a hotly anticipated screening of Jonah Hill’s teen skateboarding drama Mid90s. Although the weather was on the damp side, crowds lined up excitedly outside the Gft for a glimpse of the stars on the red carpet, who included crime writer Denise Mina, comics legends Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, and actress Rachel Jackson.

Once inside those with tickets to the gala screening tucked into their goodie bags (which included some unusually healthy snacks) and settled down to watch a film that was almost universally loved, though notably more so by those who grew up during the Nineties. Several audience members commented that the film was much more complex than they’d expected. The occasion was also marked by a special.

Film critic Danny Leigh will be talking us through how Twin Peaks changed the TV landscape at 4pm on Monday the 6th of April...
"There are many stories in Twin Peaks - some of them are sad, some funny. Some of them are stories of madness, of violence. Some are ordinary. Yet they all have about them a sense of mystery - the mystery of life. Sometimes, the mystery of death."
A few introductory words from the Log Lady there, ta Maggie.
Should your rained-off barbeque/Diy plans for this UK Bank Holiday Monday take you within range of a functioning radio, may we suggest you tune in to this damn fine looking half-hour documentary on the legacy of Twin Peaks?
The doc, presented by film critic Danny Leigh with contributions from Richard Ayoade and more, airs at 4pm on Monday the 6th of April. It promises to revisit how,...

Every little thing he does is magic, or so the ensorcelled suits at Warner Bros. seem to believe. "Man of Steel" writer David S. Goyer's already pounding away at a Batman-infused sequel, but that may be sidelined, if momentarily, by a case of Vertigo. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Goyer will partner with Daniel Cerone, executive producer of "The Mentalist," to script a "Constantine" pilot for NBC television.
Conjured by scattered bones across a nicotine pentagram in the very image of Police-era Sting, street-wise sorcerer John Constantine first appeared in the pages of Alan Moore’s "Swamp Thing." He soon established his own haunts in Vertigo's long-running "Hellblazer" series, stewarded by the likes of Jamie Delano, Garth Ennis, Warren Ellis, Denise Mina, Andy Diggle, Peter Milligan and more. In 2005, Keanu Reeves donned his demons (but not his brogue or blonde hair) in a film by Francis Lawrence.

Life and work of Iain Banks to be honoured at 30th festival, with Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood and Neil Gaiman also featuring in two-week event partnered by the Guardian
The life and works of the late Iain Banks will be celebrated by close friends including Ian Rankin and Val McDermid in a special event at this August's Edinburgh international book festival, for which the Guardian is media partner.
"Scotland and the world were rocked by his death last weekend," said Nick Barley, the festival director. "We'd been planning a celebration anyway as we're marking our 30th birthday, and his first novel, The Wasp Factory, was out in 1984. I spoke to him many times about what he'd like to do. He wanted to be there – sadly he can't be."
Instead, the event on the festival's closing Sunday will see Scottish authors including Rankin, McDermid and Ken MacLeod looking back over Banks's 29-year career.

We're guessing that most people are starting to get The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo fatigue. One would think that three books, three Swedish films, and one American film (with more still in the cards) would suffice in telling the story of Lisbeth Salander for at least a few more years, but, no, publishers and studios think we need more. You can next expect to find her story retold in the graphic novel medium thanks to DC Comics' Vertigo label. Last night I caught up with BBC1’s two-parter The Field of Blood on the iPlayer. Based on the best-selling Denise Mina novel the story has been adapted and directed by David Kane. The story, set in 1982, follows Paddy Meehan (Jayd Johnson), an ambitious young copy girl at a Glasgow newspaper who dreams of finding the big story and fighting injustice. As she thinks she’s found the case to kick-start her career she ends up embroiled in a murder case that comes at a cost to her. David Morrissey plays the surprisingly small role of her sexist and vulgar boss, Devlin.
As Paddy struggles to find her way in a very male dominated and sexist world of journalism she comes under abuse of all manner of drunken Scottish men, but still manages to keep her resolve. Paddy also seems to have the habit of being a nosey cow, I...

20 year old Scottish actress Jayd Johnson, one of Screenterrier's Faces to Watch 2010, stars alongside David Morrissey, Peter Capaldi, Jonas Armstrong in The Field Of Blood, a dark and uncompromising drama adapted from the best-selling novel by Denise Mina, coming to BBC1 this September.
Written and directed by David Kane, the crime drama is set in 1982 and centres on Jayd's character Paddy Meehan, a young copygirl working in a Glasgow newspaper office. Stuck in an almost exclusively male-dominated world of limited opportunities and cynicism, Paddy dreams of becoming an investigative journalist, believing that in miscarriages of justice, reporters are sometimes the only hope. A Sickness In The Family
Writer: Denise Mina | Artist: Antonio Fuso | Published by Titan Books
According to Denise Mina, “This story came out of King Lear and rollicking house prices in Britain” and it is an extremely well paced and orchestrated tale of how a family’s fortune and legacy can tear them apart. Be warned Miss Mina, I’m a big fan.
Meet the Ushers (the name is no coincidence). Parents, Ted and Biddy. Grandma Martha. Children William, Amy and Sam. Just a normal, middle class family gathered around the table on Christmas Day. Until they start dying very violent deaths. One-by-one. As secrets and resentments boil to the surface, it becomes clear there’s more than one Usher with a motive for killing off the others. But in the end, the truth turns out to be far more shocking than anyone in the ill-fated family could have imagined.
