From the tiniest micro-organism to the far reaches of the universe, sci-fi adaptations have made a triumphant splash across multiple streaming platforms. For decades, the collective groans that routinely followed book-to-tv adaptation announcements were a given.
At the same time, many science fiction books are so steeped in lore, character motivations, politics, and scientific complexities that converting prose to a "show but don't tell" format is a tall task.
Star Trek, for instance, has historically been pretty cut and dry with its science. A phaser will vaporize you, and a transporter will, well, transport you.
Now, imagine explaining the three-body problem from a show but don't tell approach.
Thankfully, the rash of exciting new sci-fi adventures solves these riddles with filmmakers and writers who are passionate about the material.
The 3 Body Problem is practically the face of Netflix right now, while Apple TV+ is going all in with upcoming adaptations...

Jon Favreau knew Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow’s onscreen chemistry in Iron Man was something special.
The director recently revealed to People magazine that he incorporated some of the actors’ real-life conversations into the Marvel movie. And it’s one of the reasons why the dynamic between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts felt so authentic.
“I was a very good student where I would take notes as they would talk, and whether it was improvising or even just talking about the scene, I would write stuff down that they would say,” Favreau recalled.
He particularly remembered one instance when Paltrow actually corrected Downey “because we were reading the script and it said, ‘This looks like Jackson Pollock’s spring period.’ And then she corrected us in rehearsal. She says, ‘No, it’s actually The Springs period. The Springs is the part of the Hamptons where Jackson Pollock lived and worked,...

The character of The Mandarin first appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 1964, created by Don Heck and Marvel bigwig Stan Lee. In John Coates' 2014 book "Don Heck: A Work of Art," Heck admitted that the Mandarin was more Lee's idea, as he wanted an old-fashioned Fu Manchu-like villain to face off against Iron Man, one of the company's B-list characters. A lot of the cliches and stereotypes embodied by Dr. Fu-Manchu (a villain character from a 1913 pulp novel by Sax Rohmer) transferred directly into the Mandarin. The Mandarin is a supervillain from China and was initially drawn as a racist caricature.
In the original comics, the Mandarin possessed 10 magical rings, salvaged from a crashed alien spaceship. He was one of Iron Man's earliest nemeses. The character has stubbornly remained in the background of Marvel comics for decades.

Sony Pictures Television Studios president Katherine Pope says the company is being “methodical and thoughtful” about which video game IPs it turns into television series.
“We are so lucky to have such a strong relationship with our partners at PlayStation, and we absolutely are continuing to build more and more series together. That said, we are being pretty methodical and thoughtful about it,” Pope told TheWrap. “This IP is so special and valuable that we would rather take our time and get it right, than rush and get it wrong. So far, we have strong teams working on ‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ and ‘God of War.’ I wish I could tell you more about them, but I’m sworn to secrecy!”
Sony’s recent TV credits include HBO’s Emmy-nominated hit “The Last of Us” and the live-action adaptation of “Twisted Metal,” premiering Thursday on Peacock.

Rogue One and The Theory of Everything actress Felicity Jones is getting behind the wheel for One, a Formula 1 family drama series from Bedrock Entertainment, Mark Fergus, and Hawk Ostby. The project is a first for the Formula 1 organization, which has never hit the track for a scripted series. Jones will star in and produce, with Fergus and Ostby writing the script.
According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, One focuses on “the tumultuous ascension of a fictitious family-owned Formula 1 team as it contends with fierce personalities, ever-changing rivals, and multi-million-dollar stakes. It will blend fiction with the real-world of F1, which has 23 races scheduled for the 2023 season.”
Writing for the series is delayed because of the writers’ strike. However, once the details of the ongoing battle for representation, fair pay, and better work conditions, among other things, are concluded, Fergus and Ostby will put the pedal to the metal on scripting the series.

If one were to write a book about a handful of movies that defined Hollywood, it would be very difficult to imagine writing that book without including 2008's "Iron Man." While the superhero movie boom certainly began several years earlier with the likes of "X-Men" and "Spider-Man," not to mention "Batman Begins," it was director Jon Favreau's take on Tony Stark that completely reshaped the way people in the movie business think about filmmaking in general. Forget sequels -- cinematic universes are the way of the future!

Television is going full fan boy for video game adaptations.
Earlier this month, Amazon greenlit a new series based on award-winning PlayStation game God of War, with Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins and The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby on board.
HBO’s The Last of Us, a hotly-anticipated small-screen version of the 2013 action-adventure game from Naughty Dog and Sony, created by Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, one of the game’s original directors, drops Jan. 15.
They join a long list of game-to-series adaptations, from Halo (Paramount+) to Twisted Metal (Peacock) and Horizon (Netflix). Alongside God of War, Amazon is also moving forward with its TV version of post-apocalyptic role-playing game Fallout, being adapted by Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan.
All of the adaptations hope to capitalize on the games’ devoted base of hard core fans. But Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the hit anime series...

Boy! Amazon is putting plenty of firepower behind its God of War TV series. According to reports, Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins and The Expanse creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby are adapting the award-winning Playstation game. Fergus and Ostby will write the series and executive produce alongside Judkins.
The God of War series revolves around Kratos, the demigod son of Zeus, and a mortal woman named Callisto. After exacting vengeance against the Gods of Olympus, Kratos now lives as a man in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters. In this harsh, unforgiving world, he must fight to survive and teach his son to do the same.
“God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling,” Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, said in a statement.

Originally announced earlier this year, Variety reports that Amazon has now officially ordered “God of War” to series, a live action television show based on the video game franchise.
Rafe Judkins (“Wheel of Time”) has been set as showrunner for the co-production between Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions.
Variety provides the following synopsis: “Based on the massively popular 2018 video game, the show follows Kratos, the God of War, who, after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard.
“When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son Atreus to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish. The Dad of War is coming to television. Well, streaming television. Amazon Prime Video has ordered a series adaptation of the PlayStation action video-game series “God of War,” it was announced Wednesday.
First created in 2005, the “God of War” franchise focuses on Kratos, a Spartan warrior who becomes the god of war after taking revenge on the original god Ares for the death of his family, and eventually wages war on the entire Greek pantheon. The Prime Video series will be based on the two most recent games in the franchise: 2018’s “God of War” and last month’s “God of War: Ragnarök,” which saw Kratos leave Greece for the Norse realm of Midgard.
The storyline of the show will see Kratos, after the death of his second wife Faye, setting off on a journey with his son Atreus to spread her ashes from the highest peak of the realm.

Most movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have had more than one credited screenwriter. There are exceptions to this, such as "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," which has a script written by "Loki" showrunner Michael Waldron. However, of the 27 MCU films before that, only five were credited to a single screenwriter. The rest had two, three, even as many as six screenwriters, in the case of "Spider-Man: Homecoming."
Looking back to Phase One of the MCU, the very first film, "Iron Man," had a script by the writing teams of Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, and...

This would mark the latest big deal for a TV series based on a popular video game title in a red-hot streaming marketplace for gaming IP. Peacock just landed another Spt/PlayStation property, Twisted Metal, with a series order and Anthony Mackie starring. HBO has coming up the high-profile PlayStation game-based series The Last of Us, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

Exclusive: Kathleen Robertson is set for a key role in the sixth and final season of Amazon’s popular sci-fi drama The Expanse.
Alcon-produced The Expanse, based on James S.A. Corey’s best-selling novels is set in the future where humanity has colonized the solar system and the people of Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt have long been in opposition with one another. When the crew of the Rocinante uncovers an ancient alien technology, a vast conspiracy begins to emerge — one that will bring the solar system to the brink of war. The Expanse is a high-action, sci-fi adventure that explores the depth of humanity against the far-spanning reaches of the known universe.
Robertson portrays Rosenfeld Guoliang, a cynic, and a fierce believer in Belter independence who is a key member of insurgent leader Marco Inaros’ inner circle.

Amazon Studios’ sci-fi drama The Expanse has always been a fighter, and it is gearing up to go out with a bang based on the key Season 5 episode titled “Gaugamela,” the script of which serves as the latest entry in Deadline’s It Starts On the Page, our series that highlights the scripts that serve as the creative backbones of the now-underway TV awards season.
The scripts are all being submitted for Emmy consideration this year and have been selected using criteria that includes critical acclaim, a range of networks and platforms, and a mix of established and lesser-known shows.
In November, Amazon gave an early and final renewal for a Season 6 of The Expanse just ahead of its 10-episode Season 5 premiere. It set in motion an endgame to the Alcon-produced series, which is based on the bestselling book series by James S.A. Corey (the nom de plume...

“The Expanse” has been renewed for Season 6 at Amazon, which will also be the show’s last.
The news comes ahead of the show’s fifth season on the streamer, which will debut on Dec. 16. This will mark the second time the show has come to an end.
“The Expanse” aired its first three seasons on Syfy, with the cable networking having cancelled the series back in 2019. Shortly after it was cancelled, it was reported that Amazon was in talks to continue the series, which is produced and fully financed by Alcon Television Group.

When the crew of the Rocinante uncovers an ancient alien technology, a vast conspiracy begins to emerge, one that will bring the solar system to the brink of war.

Amazon Prime has released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming fourth season of the popular sci-fi series The Expanse. This is a great show and I’m pretty pumped up to see how the story in this upcoming season is going to play out. This trailer certain does a good job of upping the excitement!

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Classics is closing its second Toronto Film Festival deal, this one for Lyrebird, the Dan Friedkin-directed drama that stars Vicky Krieps, Guy Pearce, Roland Moller and Claes Bang. Deal being wrapped up is for North America, Latin American, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, the Middle East and Asia. FilmNation has made a deal for the rest of the world.
It’s Spc’s second festival deal after it secured U.S. rights to the Michael Winterbottom-directed satire Greed, starring Steve Coogan and Isla Fisher.
In Lyrebird, Bang plays Joseph Piller, a soldier and member of the Dutch resistance who is tasked with investigating stolen art in the wake of World War II. His focus is on the flamboyant painter Han van Meegeren (Pearce), who allegedly sold a Vermeer to Hermann Goring. Selling stolen art to the Nazis is a crime punishable by death. After fighting in the Dutch Resistance,...

FilmNation Entertainment said Tuesday that it will handle international sales for Lyrebird, Dan Friedkin’s directorial debut that had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival this past weekend. FilmNation will now launch the pic at the Toronto Film Festival, which kicks off Thursday. 30West is already aboard handling domestic sales.

Claes Bang (The Square) plays the soldier and resistance member leading the investigation. Roland Moller and Vicky Krieps also star.
James McGee and Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby wrote the script, and Friedkin’s Imperative Entertainment is producing.
The pic is a Special Presentation at Toronto, where it will make its international debut September 11 at the Ryerson Theatre.
Tiff runs through September 15.

What will the moviegoing public make of a film called “Lyrebird”? Oblique but apt, that title refers to an ostentatious Australian bird capable of mimicking the calls of countless other species — the relevance of which may not be immediately apparent to those intrigued by the true, post-World War II story of a notorious Dutch art dealer accused of selling a priceless cultural treasure to Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Göring.
After being arrested and tried for collaborating with the enemy, Han van Meegeren mounted a most unconventional defense: He claimed that the artwork in question, “The Supper at Emmaus,” was not in fact a Johannes Vermeer masterpiece but a masterful forgery, painted by none other than himself. While the truth is considerably more complicated, van Meegeren’s story reduces neatly to the kind of handsome, upscale night-out offering that still draws sophisticated older audiences to art houses — catnip for those who...

Amazon has released an exciting new trailer for their fantastic sci-fi series The Expanse. The series is based on the novel series by James S.A. Corey, and this next chapter of the series looks like it’s going to deliver an awesome continuation of the story. It’s crazy to me that SciFi cancelled this! What were they thinking!?
It has also been confirmed that The Expanse will be getting a Season 5, so don’t worry, we will be getting at least one more season to enjoy! Here are the details on the series and what is in store for Season4:
The disappearance of rich-girl-turned-political-activist Julie Mao links the lives of Ceres detective Joe Miller (Thomas Jane), accidental ship captain James Holden (Steven Strait) and U.N. politician Chrisjen Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo). Amidst political tension between Earth, Mars and the Belt, they unravel the single greatest conspiracy of all time.

The Expanse is getting a fifth season after being rescued by Amazon Prime Video.
The Svod service, which is set to air its fourth season of the sci-fi drama beginning December 13, its first as a global Amazon Original, already has handed it a fifth run.
Season 4 of The Expanse is its first as a global Amazon Original following its cancellation by Syfy. The fourth season begins a new chapter for the series with the crew of the Rocinante on a mission from the Un to explore new worlds beyond the Ring Gate. Humanity has been given access to thousands of Earth-like planets which has created a land rush and furthered tensions between the opposing nations of Earth, Mars and the Belt.
