New Delhi, July 24 (Ians) The stage is set for an interesting finish on Day five of the 2nd Test in Port of Spain as the West Indies still require 289 runs for victory with eight wickets in hand.
Set a target of 365 runs on a rain-curtailed penultimate day on Sunday, the hosts reached 76/2 at close with Tagenarine Chanderpaul (24 runs) and Jermaine Blackwood (20 runs) holding fort.
Earlier, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj did the star turn with the ball, claiming 5/60 that went a long way in bowling out the Windies for 255 in the 1st innings. Thereafter, skipper Rohit Sharma (57) and wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan (52 not out) played whirlwind knocks to help India declare their second innings at 181/2.
So, what’s the strategy that the hosts should adopt in the prevailing circumstances? Former India opener Aakash Chopra, a JioCinema expert, said: “It depends on what they’re actually thinking about. If they want to win this game,...

Roseau (Dominica), July 15 (Ians) Spin bowling duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin combined to take out West Indies openers as the hosts were reduced to 27/2 and trail India by 244 runs at tea on day three’s play in first Test at Windsor Park Stadium, here on Friday.

Roseau (Dominica), July 12 (Ians) Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja were among the wickets for India as the visitors pushed West Indies on the backfoot by reducing them to 68/4 in 28 overs at lunch on Day 1 of first Test at Windsor Park, here on Wednesday.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, West Indies openers captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul were solid against fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Jaydev Unadkat. With the ball not providing them much swing, Brathwaite and Chanderpaul were able to get through the first half-hour without any major discomfort.
But Ashwin’s early entry dramatically changed the course of the session. The ace off-spinner began by castling Chanderpaul with a skiddy delivery coming from wide of crease in the 13th over, making him the first Indian bowler and fifth overall to dismiss a father-son duo in Test cricket.

Roseau (Dominica), July 12 (Ians) West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite won the toss and elected to bat first against India in the first Test of the two-game series at Windsor Park, here on Wednesday.
Left-handed batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan are making their Test debuts for India. While Jaiswal will open the batting alongside India captain Rohit Sharma, Kishan will bat in the middle-order and be the wicketkeeper too.
For the West Indies, left-handed batter and local lad Alick Athanaze is making his Test debut.
“Surface is generally dry, but there’s moisture in the first hour. We had a ten-day camp in Antigua. (Brian) Lara (performance mentor) was there, that was good for our young batters. We had seen ourselves in good positions in the last (two Wtc) cycles. What we need is consistency and putting it together. Want the boys to be positive,” said Brathwaite at the toss.

Roseau (Dominica), July 11 (Ians) The Rohit Sharma-led India will begin their World Test Championship (Wtc) 2025 cycle and enter the transition phase in red-ball cricket with young Yashasvi Jaiswal all set to make his debut for the country as the team faces a wounded West Indies in the two-Test series, beginning here on Wednesday.
While India will be playing their first Test after their Wtc Final loss against Australia, West Indies are coming off a shocking elimination from the Odi World Cup Qualifiers. There are plenty of challenges for both sides and they will be eager to prove themselves.
India are tipped to name Jaiswal in the XI, off the back of a prolific stretch in domestic cricket in all three formats. Adelaide, Dec 11 (Ians) West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite said his team has a lot to work on their batting and should learn from the Australian batters after losing the second Test by 419 runs at the Adelaide Oval here on Sunday.

The West Indies’ abject capitulation in the second innings came after they had managed 214 in their first innings in response to Australia’s 511/7 declared. Australia had declared their second innings at 199/6, setting West Indies a target of 497 to win the match and sweep the two-match series 2-0.
Braithwaite said it was a disappointing second game for his team, who “showed some fight in the first”.

Perth, Dec 2 (Ians) Cricket West Indies (Cwi) on Friday announced that they have brought in Shamarh Brooks as a concussion substitute from Nkrumah Bonner in the ongoing first Test against Australia at Perth Stadium.

Perth, Dec 1 (Ians) Brilliant double centuries by Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith kept Australia in a dominant position against the West Indies on the second day of the first Test at Perth Stadium, here on Thursday.
Labuschagne (204) completed his second Test double century while Smith (200 not out) made his fourth as Australia declared their first innings at 598/4.
With this, Perth witnessed the rare occurrence of two double hundreds in a single team innings. This was only the 17th instance of two double hundreds coming in a team innings in Test cricket history and also the first such instance since January 2012 when Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke made double hundreds against India in Adelaide.
In reply to their hosts’ daunting first innings total, the West Indies openers — Kraigg Brathwaite (18 not out), and Tagenarine Chanderpaul (47 not out) negotiated a tricky 25-over phase to put up 74 on the board without losing a wicket...

Perth, Nov 30 (Ians) The West Indies men’s team are wearing black armbands on day one of their first Test against Australia at Optus Stadium in Perth as a tribute to former wicket keeper David Murray, who passed away last week.
Murray, who passed away last week at the age of 72, was the son of West Indies batting great Sir Everton Weekes. He played 19 Tests and 10 ODIs for the West Indies from 1978-82.
Murray’s first tour with the West Indies was in 1973 to England. He made his international debut for the West Indies men’s team at The Oval on September 7, which featured Lance Gibbs, Roy Fredericks, Rohan Kanhai and Clive Lloyd.
His Test debut came in 1978 against Australia in Guyana. He also featured in 114 first-class matches. But in his international career, he mostly remained an understudy to his namesake Deryck Murray and then was usurped by Jeff Dujon in the start of 1980s.

Murray’s first tour with the West Indies was in 1973 to England. He made his international debut for the West Indies men’s team at The Oval on September 7, which featured Lance Gibbs, Roy Fredericks, Rohan Kanhai and Clive Lloyd.

Perth, Nov 29 (Ians) West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite wants his batters to have discipline and bat for the 100 overs in the first Test against Australia, beginning on Wednesday, in order to combat the pacy and bouncy surface at Optus Stadium here.
For the first time since 2016, Australia and West Indies are set to clash in a Test match. The Optus Stadium is set to host the first of the two Test matches in the series and as per the curator Isaac McDonald, the track will provide good pace and bounce.
Both sides have a strong pace attack that could use the conditions to their advantage but it could be how the batters of both teams deal with the pace on the pitch that decides the outcome of the Test.
“We want to bat (for) 100 overs, the main focus is to have discipline. We have batsmen that can get on with it,...

St John’s (Antigua), Nov 1 (Ians) West Indies lead selector and cricketing legend Desmond Haynes believes the opening combination of skipper Kraigg Brathwaite and the uncapped Tagenarine Chanderpaul can pay dividends for West Indies in the two-match Test series against Australia to be played in December this year.
The left-handed Tagenarine, 24, is the son of West Indies batting great Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and has aggregated 2,669 first-class runs at an average of 34.21 with five hundreds in first-class cricket till date.
He has been included in the squad following his superb run in first-class cricket this year and is expected to pair with Brathwaite at the top of the order.
West Indies are expected to assemble in Australia on November 10 and will play a three-day game against an Act/Nsw XI in Canberra, before facing Pm’s XI in a four-day match beginning November 23 at Manuka Oval.
