With 38 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2023 Tony nominations snubs was “Life of Pi” for Best Play. The production earned nine Olivier Award nominations across the pond, winning Best New Play, Actor (Hiran Abeysekera), Featured Actor, Lighting Design and Set Design. But at the Tonys, it missed out on a Best Play bid and didn’t score a nomination for Abeysekera. The production did perform well in the design categories, though, earning five nominations including for director Max Webster.

Two new musicals and a starry revival will dominate the 2023 Tony Awards nominations, according to our official odds in 17 of the 26 categories. “Some Like It Hot” and “Kimberly Akimbo” will earn at least nine and seven bids, respectively. As for the dramas, “Leopoldstadt” and “The Piano Lesson” will each garner at least five citations, with a revival of “Death of a Salesman” close behind with at least four.

In the lead-up to Tony nominations being announced on May 2, Sam Eckmann and I are predicting 10 of the Musical categories, where new breakout shows like “Kimberly Akimbo” and “Some Like it Hot” and revivals of “Sweeney Todd” and “Into the Woods” will compete for the highest honors of the New York theatre community. Nominations will be announced on May 2 and winners will be revealed on June 11. Watch the full video slugfest above.
At the outset, I declare that I think “Kimberly Akimbo” will have “a sensational Tony night.” The new show by Jeanine Tesori and David Lindsay-Abaire leads both of our predictions for the Best Musical prize, but we agree that “Some Like it Hot” will be a strong challenger. Sam describes it as “a ‘Hello Dolly!’ for the modern times,” noting how it’s both “super funny but also very poignant.”

The fall and winter have already seen several new tuners make a play for the coveted Best Musical award. “Kimberly Akimbo” is the latest work from Tony-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (“Fun Home”) and book writer/lyricist David Lindsay-Abaire. The story is adapted from Lindsay-Abaire’s straight play of the same name, which centers on the teenage Kimberly (Tony winner Victoria Clark) who has a rare disease that causes her body to age rapidly. The heartwarming and intimate show earned impressive reviews and has audiences swooning.

The Tony Awards Administration Committee has announced its first round of eligibility rulings for this Broadway season, determining some of the trickier potential nominees and their respective categories.
Both co-stars of The Collaboration – Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope – will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play, rather than split up into leading and featured slots. Ohio State Murders, written by Adrienne Kennedy in 1991 and performed regionally but never on Broadway until this season, will be considered a revival in keeping with similar rulings in recent years about Broadway debuts of older shows such as The Boys in The Band.
Perhaps among the more surprising rulings is for Sharon D Clarke, who played Linda Loman opposite Wendell Pierce’s Willy Loman in Miranda Cromwell’s Death of a Salesman revival. Clarke will be eligible as a Featured Actress rather than Leading.

Just shy of one month ago, a revival of legendary composer Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Company” took home five Tony Awards, including the top prize for Best Revival. Now a remounting of one of his most popular works, “Into the Woods,” has just kicked off the new 2022-2023 Broadway season. The production, which opened at the St. James Theatre on July 10 for an extremely limited run, originated as a starry two-week gala at New York City Center in May and earned such acclaim that it quickly announced this Broadway engagement with most of its cast in tact.
Brilliantly weaving together different fairytale characters, “Into the Woods” is a beautiful and moving fable (and cautionary tale) about parenting and community and of childhood wonder and the loss of innocence. The musical features a libretto by James Lapine, and Lear deBessonet helms this production. The enviable ensemble includes Tony nominees Sara Bareilles,...

Exclusive: Cheyenne Jackson will step into the roles of Cinderella’s Prince and Red Riding Hood’s Wolf for a weeklong stint in Broadway’s hit revival Into the Woods, taking over for Gavin Creel during a previously scheduled absence.
Jackson will play the roles from July 24-August 2 while Creel fulfills prior commitments. The latter will return to the production on August 6 following a residence at The O’Neill National Musical Theatre Conference performing the project he wrote, Walk on Through: Confessions of a Museum Novice.
“I’m honored and elated to have been asked to return to my Broadway roots and join this enchanted production of Into the Woods alongside these beautiful artists,” Jackson said. “As a father of two young children, this piece resonates even deeper for me now, and I cannot wait to return to the St James Theatre and go Into the Woods once more.”

Even in a second- or third-rate production, Into the Woods is delightful, big and lovable and accessible and loaded with some of Stephen Sondheim’s most gorgeous and endearing songs.
In a top-flight production, the 1986 musical is transcendent. And make no mistake: Whatever else this summer will be remembered for, we can say this: New Yorkers and visitors to this city currently have a chance to witness the transcendence of a musical theater masterpiece.
Originally staged at New York City Center Encores!, Lear deBessonet’s magnificent, starry Into The Woods all but demanded a Broadway transfer, with sold-out crowds packing City Center and those left out wanting in. Last week at a Broadway preview, the audience was so stoked for this show and this cast that a loud and prolonged cacophony of applause greeted the rise of the curtain. Clearly, this Into The Woods preceded itself.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 27 to cast their 2022 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Five years ago, that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
While the comedy and drama series ballots have each maintained an average of over 100 entrants in recent years, there have nearly always been fewer than 40 choices in the limited series genre. This year, however, the field is much larger at 61, which is up by 24 from last year. There were 41 contenders in 2020, 35 in 2019, and 33 in 2018. Five series from the list below will make the cut and be announced as Emmy nominees on July 12.

“Central Park” had a huge task for its second season with Emmy Raver-Lampman taking over for the voice of Molly Tillerman from Kristen Bell, who had voice the character in the first season. Showrunner Steven Davis explains that any apprehension about whether she would rise to the occasion were quickly put to bed. “She started with a song and it’s called, ‘Paint the World.’ It’s the very first time we all heard her voice come out and it was, this is cheesy, but there were tears literally shed. It’s such a sweet song and she just floored us,” he tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).

FX has renewed Ryan Murphy’s “American Horror Stories” for a second installment, FX Entertainment President Eric Schrier said Friday at FX’s second (of three) TCA (Television Critics Association) day. Season 2 of the anthology series will debut in 2022.
The “American Horror Story” spinoff debuted in July as the most-watched FX on Hulu series to date. That boast counts just four series, however, the others being “Devs,” “Mrs. America” and “A Teacher.” Still, first place is first place.
The Season 1 finale of “Stories” will premiere Thursday, Aug. 19. Meanwhile, “American Horror Story: Double Feature,” which is the 10th season of “AHS,” is set to premiere Aug. 25 at 10 p.m. on FX. Keeping the partnership alive, the show will be available to stream the following day on FX on Hulu.

By this point, creator Ryan Murphy has enough content to fill a shared universe. So it would make sense if his latest creation, “American Horror Stories,” wanted to be firmly placed in the “Ryan Murphy-verse” — using one-off episodes to establish extras space where preexisting characters and themes from old seasons of “American Horror Story” could stretch out. But having watched the series for three consecutive weeks now, that’s not exactly what the FX on Hulu show is aiming for, and I’m no closer to telling you who this show is made for or what message it’s hoping to impart.
The show’s official synopsis states it’s “an anthology series of stand-alone episodes delving into horror myths, legends, and lore,” but in three episodes (four if you include the two-part pilot as separate entities) it’s unclear what legends, myths, or lore we’re drawing from outside of Murphy’s universe.

Heads off up: We’re spoiling American Horror Stories‘ “Rubber (Wo)man Part Two,” now streaming on FX on Hulu.

(Warning: This post, which was first published July 15, contains spoilers for the series premiere of FX on Hulu’s “American Horror Stories.”)
“American Horror Story” spinoff “American Horror Stories” debuted Thursday on FX on Hulu with an homage to the original franchise’s iconic first season, “Murder House.” By the end of the two-part series premiere episode, titled “Rubber (Wo)man,” murderous heroine Scarlett (played by Sierra McCormick) has managed to do the unthinkable: Escape the Murder House and live to not just tell the tale — but return every year at Halloween to visit the eternally trapped ghosts of her love Ruby (Kaia Gerber) and dads Michael (Matt Bomer) and Troy (Gavin Creel).
We’ve seen many others try and fail at this task throughout “AHS” history, and most of the time it’s because someone who claimed to care about the person ended up killing them to keep them there.

Although we've only seen two episodes so far, FX's American Horror Stories has already given us a new iconic character in the premiere: Sierra McCormick's Scarlett, aka the Rubber Woman. The prickly Scarlett becomes one of Murder House's latest victims after her dads (Matt Bomer and Gavin Creel) buy it to flip it into an upscale haunted-house experience. After a few nights in her new home, Scarlett's dark side intensifies when she puts on Tate Langdon's old gimp suit, and she spares no one who scorns her, especially not the mean girls at school. McCormick delivers a tour-de-force performance that explores every creepy and complicated aspect of Scarlett's character. So who is McCormick, and where might you have seen her before? Here's what to know about the 23-year-old actress's impressive résumé!

American Horror Stories Reopens Murder House, Introduces Rubber Woman in Series Premiere (Grade It!)
“There is a line when sex stops and something very dark and unhealthy starts.” This is meant to be a warning in the first episode of American Horror Stories, but let’s be honest, it could also double as the FX on Hulu series’ official logline.
The American Horror Story spinoff gets the party started by taking us back to where it all began, Season 1’s infamous Murder House. It’s the third time we’ve returned to this hallowed place, following brief visits in Hotel and Apocalypse, and the Harmons’ old stomping grounds are exactly as we remember them.

If you thought American Horror Story: Apocalypse ruined the concept of the Murder House forever, then allow us to introduce American Horror Stories Season 1 Episode 1 and American Horror Stories Season 1 Episode 2.
The purpose of this spinoff is to tell new horror stories set in the same universe as American Horror Story, so it was bizarre to return to Murder House and for there not to be any of the characters we met throughout the two seasons we spent there.
Well, we heard the kids as they lead a therapist to her death, but still, there was so much squandered here.
I completely understand that many of the original stars were probably done with the franchise, and if that was the case, they should have left Murder House alone.
New stories in new locations would be much more exciting than beating a dead horse and baiting viewers into thinking they will...

Spoiler Alert: The post below has details for the first two episodes of FX and Hulu’s American Horror Stories.
For the first two episodes of American Horror Stories, there’s no place like home, sweet home.
FX on Hulu’s AHS spinoff anthology series mirrors the very first episodes of the long-running horror series as a new family makes their way to the infamous Los Angeles home in the first episode, “Rubber(wo)Man.” This time, it’s a couple of house-flippers, Michael (Matt Bomer) and Troy (Gavin Creel), and their disinterested teenage daughter Scarlett (Sierra McKormick).
Upon unpacking, Scarlett finds the leather rubber suit — yes, that one — and gives the devilish attire a try. The familiar trill of Bernard Hermann’s “Twisted Nerve” (famous for its use in Kill Bill) harkens to the scenes from the AHS‘s first sinister moments. While she checks herself out in the mirror,...

American Horror Stories will take viewers back to a familiar American Horror Story location.
In a bonkers first-look trailer, we get to see a new crop of characters in the iconic murder house introduced on American Horror Story Season 1.
The house was also featured on American Horror Story Season 8, and when we last left it, it was still filled with countless spirits from the past.
There's no sign of any familiar characters in the house setting, but FX typically keeps plot points under secret until transmission, so there may well be some big faces.
There is the confirmation of the return of the Rubber Suit, which terrorized people on countless occasions throughout the run of the show.
What will it get up to?
We also get a glimpse of the Infantata, which looks poised to be making a return in some capacity during the special season.

A select number of now-dark Broadway venues will begin opening in April for a series of live- performance pop-up events that could establish the safety protocols needed for the theater industry’s eventual return.
Beginning with the Shubert Organization’s Music Box Theatre on 45th Street, Broadway theaters will be among the venues housing the events of the NY PopsUp program described as a new 100-day arts festival throughout New York City and State. The London production of the musical Waitress will not re-open following the Covid-19 West End shutdown, producers announced today.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the closing of our beloved London production of Waitress the Musical,” producers tweeted. “As you’ll be aware, we’ve had to temporarily lower the curtain at the Adelphi Theatre and it’s now unlikely that the diner will reopen once this period of uncertainty is over.

More than 20 Broadway producers have pledged $1 million in matching funds for the Covid-19 Emergency Assistance Fund of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The producers will match every new donation made by the public up to the million-dollar mark.
With the pledge, fund organizers have set a $2 million goal by April 12.
The emergency assistance fund, administered by The Actors Fund, is designed to help onstage, backstage and behind the scenes workers impacted by the coronavirus pandemic and work shutdown. Broadway theaters have been dark since March 12, with plans to reopen – for now, anyway – on April 13 (an extension beyond that opening date is likely).
The matching fund challenge was initiated by Spencer Ross with a $50,000 pledge.
