Back in February, Jimmy Palmiotti and Phil Noto’s two-issue 2005 sci-fi western comic book, The New West, would be heading to the big screen with Benderspink and Wizard magazine founder, Gareb Shamus.
Now comes word that Ryan Engle, who recently performed on-set production scriptwriting work for the Liam Neeson’s Non-Stop actioner has been hired to write the script for The New West for New Regency’s producer Len Wiseman.
Wiseman, who is helming Total Recall remake, likely will not direct. The story is set in Los Angeles in the near future, but logline for the movie is being kept under wraps.
The plot in the comic book, penned by Palmiotti and illustrated by Noto, centers on a bomb creating an electromagnetic pulse that causes all technology to stop working in Los Angeles. The Hollywood Reporter confirms that New Regency has picked up the rights to The New West; a comic book written by All-Star Western co-writer Jimmy Palmiotti (with art from Phil Noto). Benderspink's Chris Bender, J.S. Spink and Jake Weiner are will produce alongside the former founder of Wizard Magazine, Gareb Shamus. Most exciting however is the fact that Total Recall director Len Wiseman will also produce, although he isn't currently attached to direct the adaptation of the two-issue comic book series. The New West focuses on disgraced former Los Angeles Police detective Daniel Wise and is set in a near future deserted hostile La environment where the Mayor has been kidnapped and Wise is the only one who can save him..,with just a horse and sword.

A man, his horse, and a sword. Welcome to The New West! Back in February, we told you that Jimmy Palmiotti and Phil Noto’s 2005 sci-fi western comic book miniseries, The New West, would be heading for the big screen with Benderspink and Wizard magazine founder Gareb Shamus. At Dallas Comic Con, I had the most wonderful chat with the multi-award winning writer, editor, artist, and character creator Jimmy Palmiotti (All-Star Western, Painkiller Jane) about the big screen adaptation of this two-issue comic. Check out our conversation below:

Benderspink and Wizard magazine founder Gareb Shamus have nabbed the film rights to Jimmy Palmiotti and Phil Noto‘s 2005 sci-fi western comic book miniseries, The New West, which was published by the now defunct Black Bull Entertainment.
THR reports that Shamus, along with Chris Bender, Jc Spink and Jake Weiner of Benderspink will produce the project based on the two-issue comic set in a near-future Los Angeles where an electromagnetic pulse bomb has causes all technology to stop working. In this hostile environment a disgraced former Lapd detective must rescue a kidnapped mayor with only a horse and a sword.

According to THR, the founder of Wizard Magazine, Gareb Shamus, and Benderspink are teaming up to adapt Black Bull Media’s comic book The New West for the big screen. The two-issue story is set in a futuristic L.A. where “an electromagnetic pulse bomb has caused all technology to stop working.”
Written by Jimmy Palmiotti and drawn by Phil Noto, The New West — aka everyone’s worst nightmare — follows a “disgraced former Lapd detective who must rescue a kidnapped mayor with only a horse and a sword.” This isn’t the first comic book adaptation for Benderspink, they previously brought A History of Violence to the big screen back in 2005. Interestingly enough, Black Bull was the publishing house of Wizard Entertainment, which has grown into a comic and toy price guide, several different magazines as well as conventions, after its start in 1991.

Black Bull Media’s comic book series The New West has just been picked up by Benderspink and Wizard Magazine founder Gareb Shamus, who have teamed up to give us a feature film adaptation of the western. The 2005 two issue series was written by Jimmy Palmiotti with art created by Phil Noto.

Once upon a time there was a powerful Wizard who had evil in his heart. He saw the comic world as a place he could bend to his will. And for a time, publishing companies flocked to him as loyal lap-dogs. Their best artists and writers were doled out to him to make appearances at his traveling circus. He was gloriously powerful, but feared his mortality. Soon, his spells… terrible fluff charms with no bite or news illusions presented way past their prime… weakened his power. The Wizard flailed madly to stay relevant. The people of the comic world simply stopped paying attention. His power dwindled. His traveling circus became a geek show of tired acts. He was left with no choice. He took the few followers he’d kept a grasp on, and sucked their life force… and ran into the forest. And there he stayed, seething, and cursing the public for abandoning him.

Wizard World without Gareb Shamus. The entire idea would have seemed ridiculous until just a few days ago when an SEC filing revealed that Shamus, the owner and founder of the company, had been removed as CEO. It was startling news which left everyone wondering what would become of the Wizard brand—once mighty in both media coverage and entertainment shows.
Answers are beginning to emerge. In an interview with The Beat, Wizard’s executive chairman Mike Mathews revealed that a new era has already begun at Wizard World, which will include outreach to the entire industry in a move to repair damaged relationships with both other industry players and fans.
In one of the most notorious examples of the bad blood which the old Wizard had given rise to, subscribers to the print magazine had not been given any make-up subscriptions for issues paid for but never mailed. However,...

A terse SEC filing on Friday has led to headlines all over comics: Gareb Shamus has resigned as CEO, President and Director of Wizard World, Inc., the convention-running entity of the Wizard empire. Seeing as how Shamus is the owner and founder of the company it came as a shock. But what does it really mean? Has Shamus really been ousted from his own company — or is it just a filing to reflect some internal resource shuffling?
The latest iteration of the shrinking of the Wizard brand began about a year ago when Shamus announced that the magazine would return as a downloadable Pdf. As we noted at the time, Shamus seemed almost eerily focused on this new outing, promising an audience of millions and the ability to break new comics. “We can make things cool,” he told us at the time, a perhaps distant echo of Wizard’s one...

I have yet to go to WonderCon, for as long as I can remember the event has taken place up in San Francisco and I never was able to make it up there to attend. I've heard that it's a great convention experience though, mostly because it's not as big as Comic-Con, and it's a bit more laid back.

Hello again, one and all. I'm back for this final day to wrap up my thoughts on the 2010 Chicago Comic Con, as presented by Wizard. See what they did there? Fooled you. Same way we all don't know Xfiniity is actually Comcast, and Fox News is actually Satan's News Network. When we last left off, I'd given a fairly positive review of the dealer floor. While it feels like the Swap-o-Rama had a child with that creepy guy who shows up at the comic store in sweatpants and an original 1978 Incredible Hulk shirt stained with brown mustard... the dealer floor offers a plethora of deals, steals, and hard-to-find collectibles that you'd just not find if not for the gaping square footage of a convention hall. With that said, it's time we wrap up this little tour of the "Big-Con-That-Could... but didn't."
