People always complain how sad endings and violence are dangerous for little kids to see in the movies. But I think it's so much more dangerous to candy-coat. Happy endings are infinitely more damaging to a kid in the long run. You don't always manage to jump free in the knick of time. The good guy doesn't always win. Sometimes someone else gets the girl. The world's a very violent place and you need to know that violence has repurcussions - that people can get hurt and die and that things don't always wrap up neatly in the end with everyone happy. Happy endings are so much more damaging to kids because they make them believe that everything will be okay for them in the end no matter what goes wrong along the way. Call me a pessimist, but it just doesn't work out like that all the time.
