Review by Michael Pickle, MoreHorror.com
One of my favorite things about writing for More Horror is the fact that I get to watch some films that I would have never normally had access to otherwise. This is almost always a good thing. Not true for this week's review of Death of the Dead.
I have never felt the need to fast forward through a movie that I was reviewing until now. Had it not been for the beautiful and talented lead, Christina Rose, I might not have resisted the urge.
I gave the film the benefit of the doubt and waited patiently until the last seconds holding out hope for something entertaining. All I got was bad jokes, bad acting, horrible zombies and even worse writing.
I have a fondness for spoofs like Airplane and Scary Movie and I love hilariously stupid films like the Troma films, but to...

Dismal (Gary King, 2009)
There are three basic types of low budget independent films. There are the small personal films that showcase the personal vision of the filmmaker. No one sees these unless they helped pay for them.
The second group is made up of the films that go for the shock and awe to get their audience. They’re the ones that cross the line to get attention and notoriety. His honorable Lloyd Kaufman of Troma has made an art form out of this tier.
The third type of indie film, at least when it comes to genre pics, is the type that ignore that they have no budget and just set out to make a movie no matter what. They tend to play by the same rules as big Hollywood flick but only cost a fraction of the budget. Whether they succeed or not is really up to the viewer,...

D: Bo Buckley
C: Lydia Chandler, Tim Morris, Bill Oberst Jr., Capel Kane, Will Triplett
Group of students out in the swamp studying wild life for extra credit run amok of a family of cannibalistic killers.
Let's be honest. This premise has been done to death a million times! Dismal serves as a reminder of the some of the earlier films that came out before it. Dismal lacks the realism and the grittiness of Just Before Dawn. Dismal lacks the terrifying set pieces of The Hills Have Eyes. And it's nowhere near as exciting or as thrilling as the more recent Wrong Turn. That's not to say that Dismal is a bad movie. It isn't. It's competently made. It competently acted. Dismal has some moderately suspenseful scenes. And Dismal has a few cringe worthy moments of gore and blood letting. The problem is, it's just...

*Full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Gary King.
**Some spoilers be here.
Director: Gary King.
Writer: Bo Buckley.
There is something that happens to you after reviewing hundreds of horror films. One becomes desensitized to the violence, but an individual also becomes less tolerant of films that do not break any type of mold. Dismal is one of these films whose qualities put the flick firmly in the horror genre; yet, there is lots of repetition here. Tried and true lines are delivered in Dismal, such as "we'll be right back," and "why are you doing this?" (Dismal). Other tropes deliver the overused mantrap, a hooded killer, and a family of cannibals. Some of the elements have been used in countless horror films before e.g. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Jim Gillespie's Venom and Dismal does not break out of the box of horror cliches.

A Mad River Film Dismal will see some theatres at the American Film Market beginning Wednesday, November 4th. A horror tale that takes place in the bowels of a deep, dark swamp Dismal may be too much to handle for some fans (cannibalism). Dismal will star Bill Oberst Jr., and newcomer Lydia Chandler in this horror adventure, that might leave many of the cast members dead or dying. Gary King is the director of Dismal and Bo Buckley the writer of this visually graphic movie, that appears to be from the depths of one's darker nightmares. Have a look at the full cast and synopsis below.
A synopsis for Dismal here:
