It’s definitely time for Benedict Cumberbatch fans to celebrate as the actor’s two very similar shows are coming to Netflix at almost the same time later in May. The streaming will first release the 2018 drama miniseries Patrick Melrose which will be followed by Cumberbatch’s brand new show Eric.
Apart from the fact that the actor stars in both shows, the series have much more in common than they initially seem to.
Back in 2018, Patrick Melrose got to be Cumberbatch’s first big dramatical role since the actor rose to international prominence due to his breakout role in the BBC crime drama show Sherlock.
Based on Edward St Aubyn’s semi-biographical novels, Patrick Melrose follows an eponymous aristocrat whose wealthy family’s facade hides his big childhood trauma caused by Patrick’s abusive father, which later leads to Patrick’s severe substance abuse and struggles in adulthood.

At the beginning of J.J. Abrams' 2009 sci-fi/action flick "Star Trek," a reboot of the beloved 1966 TV series, a Federation vessel called the U.S.S. Kelvin is attacked by a mysterious Romulan ship that appeared through a portal in space. The Romulan ship, called the Narada, cripples the Kelvin and kills its captain. The Kelvin's first officer, Commander George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth) takes command and, in a sacrificial defense measure, pilots the Kelvin on a collision course. In the violence, Commander Kirk's very pregnant wife Winona (Jennifer Morrison) is carried to an escape pod, having gone into labor. Over a communication channel, Jennifer and George bid each other farewell, and settle on a name for their son. She suggests Tiberius. He suggests Jim. The baby James T. Kirk is born as his father dies in a fiery conflagration.
This is, of course, quite different from James T. Kirk's...

Paramount Global Nears Crossroads After Latest Acquisition Offer: What’s Shari Redstone’s Next Move?
News of Byron Allen’s $30 billion offer (including debt) for Paramount Global has restarted Hollywood’s most active parlor game: Whither Paramount and assets like its 112-year-old film studio and iconic Melrose lot?
Paramount is taking Allen’s bid seriously enough, as Deadline understands it, to form a special board committee to evaluate any potential bids. Shari Redstone, non-executive chair of the company and head of its controlling shareholder National Amusements, is not a member of the special committee, a person familiar with the body told Deadline. The purpose of excluding her is to provide an extra layer of scrutiny for all potential transactions. David Ellison’s Skydance Media, RedBird Capital and Apollo Global Management have expressed interest in the Paramount assets, and Paramount CEO Bob Bakish discussed a potential combination with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav last December.

Exclusive: It’s not just Netflix that made a bid for Warner Bros.’ scrapped Coyote vs. Acme. Paramount, Apple and Amazon have seen the movie as well. Of those, Paramount has made a bid, and the plus there is a potential theatrical release. The Melrose lot could use it on the 2024 release calendar. Debt-laden exhibitors would want it, too.
Meanwhile, Amazon is mulling, I’m told, with no formal bid made. First, it takes longer over there to conduct business and get decisions through the proper channels. I also hear that marketing execs are trying to get their heads around the picture (seriously — there’s a lot of action scenes in the movie and hysterical jokes that easily could be used in trailers. I’ve seen the movie. Look out for the Porky Pig pant-less joke).
Warners is playing hardball as it wants to cover the $70M and then some.

Sunday Am Writethrough after Saturday Am update: As the Hollywood labor stoppage continues, the 2023 box office rally rages on, as domestic box office soars past $6 billion, +22% over the same January-August period a year ago. This weekend for all movies stands at an estimated $178M. This is the fourth time in box office history to have four movies cross $25M; the last time was Thanksgiving weekend 2018.
We always knew this weekend would beat the first frame of August a year ago ($92M), and that’s happening at +94%. But the current Friday-Sunday is also kicking the first weekend of August 2019’s $148.99M by +20%, and that’s when Hobbs & Shaw ruled the chart.
Barbie remains box office queen bee with $53M in weekend 3, after a $17M Friday and $20M Saturday. By Eod, Barbie is roughly $40M shy from passing the half billion mark at the domestic box office, with her gross set to stand at $459.4M.

The Hollywood movie studios have mostly skipped San Diego Comic-Con this year, and don’t have a single outdoor ad in the Gas Lamp neighborhood as the confab kicked off this week.
Typically, you’ll catch banners on street lamps — at least — for upcoming Marvel Studios movies. This year, Disney has The Marvels coming out on November 10 while Sony is looking to expand its Venom universe on October 6 with Kraven the Hunter. I mean, Sony had a banner up near the Hard Rock Hotel for its Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy The Interview back in 2014 (that film was ultimately tainted by the North Korean hack at the studio). It’s a lost opportunity to reach a crowd of 135,000 and spike heat for a project on social media.
