Horror movies like Deep Fear take place underground, and they are often the most effective as far as compelling scares go. They evoke a fear that everyone can understand. Trap someone in a confined, dark space below ground, then have them be pursued by someone (or something) — it’s a simple but winning formula.
Screambox‘s latest release Deep Fear, as well as the nine other movies below, reinforce feelings of claustrophobia and remind you of what possible evils could be hiding below the surface. As Above, So Below, The Descent, C.H.U.D., Creep and The Midnight Meat Train are all familiar examples of this subgenre, but this list focuses on underseen movies set underground.

Robot and Frank; Identity Thief; Red Dawn; Fire in the Night; A Field in England
What a strange little movie is Robot and Frank (2012, EOne, 12). Set in the near future, this gentle, sci-fi-inflected oddity finds Frank Langella playing an ageing cat burglar who becomes the unwilling recipient of a robot butler. Initially scornful of his automated assistant (and depressed by encroaching dementia), Frank warms to the robot's charms when he realises that he can become a partner in crime.
It sounds terrible, like some misjudged hybrid of the all too real pain of Iris and the fantastical comedy of Sleeper. Yet somehow it works, with writer Christopher Ford and director Jake Schreier conjuring an unexpectedly touching and bittersweet tale about the rigours of old age and the peculiar twists of unlikely friendship. Peter Sarsgaard provides the voice of the robot who overturns generic conventions by being both utterly practical and increasingly amiable,...

Film London announces Lilting, the latest project from Film London Microwave, will be distributed by Curzon Film World’s Artificial Eye in the UK with Protagonist Pictures to manage international sales. A striking feature debut from director Hong Khaou with an all-star cast led by Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Cloud Atlas) and Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), Lilting explores love without a common language.
Written and directed by Khaou and produced by Dominic Buchanan, Lilting is the eighth film from the successful feature film fund Film London Microwave. Alongside Whishaw and Pei Pei, the film also stars Peter Bowles (Blow-Up, The Bank Job), Morven Christie (House of 9, The Young Victoria) and Andrew Leung (The List).
As part of Film London Microwave’s mentorship component, award-winning film-maker Michael Winterbottom acted as writer/director Khaou’s mentor, while producer Buchanan received guidance and support from his mentor Ken Marshall, the producer of London to Brighton, Filth and Song for Marion.
Curzon Film World’s Artificial Eye is known for its discerning taste in the best of European and world cinema. The label has released more winners of the Cannes Palme d'Or than any other UK distributor, with titles including The Class (2008) and The White Ribbon (2009).
Commercially-minded and creatively-spirited Protagonist Pictures is an international sales company committed to strong relationships with film-makers. Recent highlights in their catalogue include Searching for Sugar Man, Sightseers, The Imposter and Microwave’s Shifty. This year at Cannes they represent The Selfish Giant by Clio Barnard, screening in Directors’ Fortnight, and in the Critics’ Week, Paul Wright’s debut feature For Those In Peril.
Lilting tells the story of a Chinese mother (Pei Pei) as she grieves for her son (Leung) following his untimely death. He was her eyes and ears in the UK, their adopted country, and without him she is stranded. The only person left is his lover (Whishaw) – who she knows only as his flat mate. Together they are forced to overcome their differences and unite in sorrow whilst struggling against the absence of a shared language. An intimate and thoughtful film, Lilting addresses overcoming cultural and generational boundaries, the power of memory, and the lifelines and relationships formed in the face of grief.
Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission, said: “Lilting is a moving cinematic achievement and I am delighted that it will reach UK audiences through Curzon Film World and that Protagonist will be managing international sales. It is a testament to Microwave’s innovative approach to film-making that its projects attract high-calibre talent and prestigious commercial distributors and sales agents. The scheme’s successful track record is also a result of the Microwave team, who are integral to nurturing and guiding all our film-makers. I am proud to see another Microwave feature proving itself in the commercial marketplace and hope this is only the start of Lilting’s success.”
Louisa Dent, Managing Director of Curzon Film World said: "When we read the script, it was clear that this was something special. There is an emotional urgency that is compelling and honest. Hong is a real emerging talent and his short films marked him out. We knew that the Microwave/Film London team would be great partners on this and with a quality cast it seemed liked a perfect fit for us.”
Mike Goodridge, CEO of Protagonist Pictures said: “I had admired Hong's shorts so it was with great excitement that I watched his first feature Lilting. But Hong exceeds expectations: the film is an accomplished and mature portrait of love and loss, graced by two extraordinary lead performances. The whole Protagonist team was knocked out by it and we are confident it will be embraced by distributors around the world.”
Funded by Film London Microwave, additional finance came from production companies Stink Films and Andy Brunskill’s recently launched Sums Film and Media Ltd., supported by financier/producer Bob & Co, Lim Kay Sui and Neo Swee Lin.
Film London Microwave is a unique training-through-production scheme delivered in partnership with BBC Films and with support from Creative Skillset. Challenging London-based film-makers to shoot a feature film for up to £120,000, Film London Microwave enables talent to thrive in a limited budget with its integrated training programme which offers crucial guidance and mentoring throughout the film-making process.
The Film London Microwave team is made up of Creative Producer Mia Bays, who also acts as the Distribution/Marketing Consultant and Mike Kelly, Business and Finance Producer, alongside Film London’s Talent Development Manager Kevin Dolan and Development and Production Officer Tessa Inkelaar. Film London will soon be appointing a new Head of Talent Development and Production, who will head up the Microwave team.
Encompassing training and development from script to screen and beyond, Film London Microwave has enjoyed excellent results. Last year saw the successful UK theatrical releases of Ben Drew’s iLL Manors, released by Revolver, and Frances Lea’s Strawberry Fields, released through Soda Pictures’ New British Cinema Quarterly programme. Other films produced through the scheme include the BAFTA-nominated Shifty, award-winning horror Mum & Dad, documentary The British Guide to Showing Off, teen drama Freestyle and the yet to be release Borrowed Time which was awarded Best in Fest at the 2012 Edinburgh International Film Festival.

My horror adventures always take me to such interesting places, so I suppose it was only a matter of time before I ended up in an old WWII Japanese underground bunker found in the wilds of Indonesia. Go hunting for Yamashita’s Gold they said. It’ll be totally safe they said. Well what they didn’t say was mutated science experiments still inhabit the mine who aren’t too keen on accepting visitors. Damn, the treasure hunting game sure is getting dangerous these days, but it’s not that unexpected as Dead Mine is just another “greedy young dick leads a crack team of specialists into a dangerous location looking for riches but instead finds evil monsters who don’t take kindly to their presence” film. You know, the usual.
Coming off his first directorial effort Mum & Dad, writer/director Steven Sheil has once again drifted into very specific genre territory with Dead Mine.

*full disclosure: an online screening of this film was provided by XLrator Media. Director: Steven Sheil. Cast: Miko Mizumo, Sam Hazeldine, and Joe Taslim. Dead Mine is the first film that this film fan has seen from Indonesia. Much of this country's beautiful landscape is shown early in the film. And, director Steven Sheil (Mum & Dad) captures some of the Asian mystique of this country, too. The horror elements are also on the screen. Taking place in an old pre-World War II mine, there are things waiting below, for a team of would-be treasure-hunters. This mine is mazelike and the many settings in this feature create for some of the film's ominous mood. There is a lot to fear in this title. And because of the surprises, Dead Mine is one of the best indie horror films to come out this year. The premise for the film is a simple one.

Here's the thing... when something is long buried and it takes everything that you've got and then some to get to, before you put in the effort, take a moment and think to yourself, "Maybe this was made hard to get to for a reason." That advice may save your life.
But then again, if everyone followed it, we wouldn't have movies. Below you'll find another look at the trailer and artwork for Dead Mine, which XLrator Media released on VOD May 2nd and will issue on Blu-ray and DVD on May 28th.

Director Steven Sheil created quite a stir with his debut feature Mum & Dad, a low budget affair that proved the UK based director could accomplish rather a lot with just a little. For his second effort Sheil packed up and headed to Indonesia for Dead Mine, an action-horror effort with an international cast that includes The Raid and Fast Six star Joe Taslim and Guilty Of Romance's Miki Mizuno. The project was backed locally by HBO Asia and with their release window coming up the network has released the first action packed trailer for the film. Are those samurai warriors the result of a World War II chemical weapons program? Why yes, yes they are....

Joe Taslim, star of Gareth Evans’ smash-hit The Raid (our review), has been cast in The Fast and the Furious 6.
Taslim will feature opposite Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, and more in the sixth-quel. His character has been described as a “cold blooded killer who uses martial arts and parkour skills to fight the Fast crew”.
Not much is known about the plot, but we do know that screenwriter Chris Morgan penned the script and Justin Lin is returning to the directors chair after Fast Five grossed an astounding $626M at the worldwide box office.
Universal Pictures have already scheduled a May 24, 2013 release for the adrenaline-fuelled action sequel, with production currently underway at various locations around the world.
Taslim will next be seen in Steven Sheil’s Dead Mine before returning to his role as Jaka in Evans’ The Raid sequel Berandal.

Outside of the highly anticipated Rust & Bone from helmer Jacques Audiard, Celluloid Dreams is much more immersed in the market aspect of Cannes this year. Headed by Hengameh Panahi, Celluloid Dreams brings to some noteworthy Cannes this year, but outside of that doesn’t have anything to front. The Rambler, The Side Effect are noteworthy projects worth keeping tabs on, while Dormant Beauty starring the just Isabelle Huppert who is on some Cannes auteur bucket list drive and Dan Algrant’s debut Greetings from Tim Buckley (see pic above) should be top tier items drawing plenty of buyer interest.

Dead Mine is an upcoming film from director Steven Sheil (Mum and Dad) that features treasure hunters in the Indonesian jungle. They are searching for Yamashita's Gold and Yamashita is an actual figure from history. He was a Japanese Naval officer and later Commander-in-Chief of the entire Japanese Navy. So, it is not hard to fathom that Yamashita had wealth of some sorts. Will the looters find his buried wealth?
That is an answer that film fans will have to wait for and another question involves the film's genre. Is this a horror film or thriller? Likely, Dead Mine is a combination of both genres. With Sheil already comfortable with horror in his picture Mum and Dad, then it is likely that this feature will also house some elements of horror. As well, the title gives some clues to its genre. Hopefully, Dead Mine is both horrifying and thrilling as a horror movie should be.

The Horror Channel is to celebrate the best of contemporary British horror with Cruel Britannia – a special season of UK TV premieres which showcases some of the finest home-grown directorial talent around.
Kick-starting the season on Friday 8th April is the UK TV premiere of Steven Sheil’s debut feature Mum & Dad – a film described as “one of the defining British horrors of its generation”. Imbued with a terrifying ferocity, it centres around a young Polish immigrant (Holby City’s Olga Fedori) who finds herself imprisoned in a suburban House of Horrors. It also stars Perry Benson (This Is England, Somers Town).
This is followed by the UK TV premiere of Gerard Johnson’s debut, the dark, brutal and bleakly amusing Tony: London Serial Killer, transmitting on Friday 15th April. It has drawn favourable comparisons to John McNaughton’s seminal Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and features a star-making...

Low-key concepts and limited budgets have given British horror films a gritty realism that is the envy of the industry – but can they ever really compete with their Us rivals?
Unlike the western or the musical, the horror movie never seems to be under threat of extinction. The occasional phenomenon – a Blair Witch Project or a Paranormal Activity – helps to fortify its commercial appeal, as do hits like Scream or Hostel, which refresh the familiar conventions. But horror remains in perpetually good nick, not least in its UK outpost, from which some of the most inventive shockers of the last 10 years have emerged. Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later kicked off a new wave of Brit horror in 2002, but it fell to emerging film-makers to properly paint the town blood-red, from Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead) to Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent), Michael J Bassett (Deathwatch, Wilderness) and Christopher Smith (Creep,...

A decidedly mundane suburban Britain plays host to the grim events recorded on 'Exhibit A' - a camcorder wielded by a young girl as her family falls apart under financial pressure. The concept of launching a film's narrative from purportedly 'found' footage is a well used device, but this Brit chiller puts a new and apparently intriguing spin on matters. A micro-budget feature produced by Warp Films (Dead Man's Shoes, This Is England) and Bigger Pictures, it passed me by whilst on its festival run but has now re-surfaced on DVD with Best UK Feature at Sundance and a couple of nominations at the British Independent Film Awards behind it. The trailer looks like a twisted hybrid of Steven Sheil's repulsive - that's a compliment - kitchen sink horror Mum & Dad and The Blair Witch Project.

Shifty was that rare thing when it came out earlier this year, a fresh British crime movie that mostly eschewed the cockney geezer clichés that dog so much of the genre’s output, in favour of character driven drama that had its roots in social realism. More impressive still, it was produced for little more than a fiver under Film London’s Microwave scheme for micro-budget film making, the same organisation that put Steven Sheil’s Mum & Dad into cinemas last year. From the 24th August you can check out this lean, witty thriller on UK DVD and Blu-ray.
The new DVD trailer can be found below the break, but don’t be fooled (or put off) by this ‘gangster cut’ or the DVD sleeve - the film’s merits lie very much in the convincing relationship between the two leads rather than any wide boy posturing.

To kick-off our coverage of the Edinburgh International Film Festival 2009 we've got Gerard Johnson's first feature, 'Tony', and it's quite excellent! A week in the life of a lonely psycho-killer with severe social problems and an unfashionable moustache, Tony is a darkly comic take on the horror/killer genre. Peter Ferdinando plays our eponymous anti-hero as a nervous and misunderstood loser, unemployable and on state funded job-seeker allowance for 20 years, but prone to sudden acts of extreme violence against anyone who might torment him.
The film is shot extremely well (props to Dp David Higgs) with contrasting scenes of Tony's claustrophobic, spartan council flat and oddly lush views of a very grim looking London, complete with drug addicts, street walkers, homeless people and a generally disenfranchised looking populace. The anonymous interzone of London's Heathrow airport and its surrounds is the setting for British horror movie Mum & Dad, a claustrophobic and intense film that follows a murderous middle-aged couple (based loosely on English serial killers Fred and Rosemarie West) who sell stolen cargo from the airport and take advantage of its transient population to fulfill their psychopathic desires. Mum & Dad and their “adopted children” are your typical horror-film family. They torture, they kill and they see nothing wrong with watching Dad use severed body parts to pleasure himself—but they still celebrate Christmas.
Steven Sheil, writer/director of the new DVD release, explains in the disc’s extras that he wanted to create a British version of this genre staple, a task at which he certainly succeeds. Olga Fedori (of the upcoming The Wolfman remake) is Lena, a young woman from Poland who gets a job on the cleaning staff of London’s Heathrow Airport. An adorable-but-strange co-worker named Birdie (Ainsley Howard) seems to take a liking to Lena and introduces her to her mute “brother” Elbie (Toby Alexander). When Lena misses the bus one night, Birdie invites her over.

Partly inspired by the grisly, real-life exploits of serial killers Fred and Rosemary West, and starring Shane Meadows regular Perry Benson (Somers Town; This Is England), the film puts a unique spin on the British horror genre, setting its tale very close to home (quite literally) and resulting in a brutally realistic horror story.
Directed by Steven Sheil and co-starring Dido Miles, Olga Fedori, Toby Alexander and newcomer Ainsley Howard, this boundary-pushing journey into suburban terror is not without its moments of dark humour, but, viewers be warned, Mum & Dad is definitely not a film for the squeamish or the easily offended.

A fair amount of critical praise if following Steven Sheil's horror movie Mum & Dad , a nasty looking bit of work opening in the UK on the 26th of this month. Revolver Entertainment is bringing the film Stateside, we're told, on May 9th but you can catch a sneak peek now via five film clips residing in our film database here . And yes, this does look a lil' warped (see the censored clip, too). Perry Benson and Dido Miles play the titular couple who live with "adopted" children and survive off whatever their can grab at the airport they're employed at. The film picks up when they kidnap an office cleaner and pull the poor gal into their world of depravity. Sounds a tad People Under the Stairs -ish but take a look at the clips and decide for yourself.

Director: Steven Sheil. Review by: Pete Higgins...Mum and Dad’s opening title sequence, all jet planes and barbed wire fences, sets the film up as some kind of social-realist, state-of-the-nation, kitchen-sink mini epic. Which it sort of is. But it is also a visceral, nightmarish horror film which seizes on the blandness and anonymity of certain aspects of 21st century Britain and twists them into something utterly unforgettable. It’s all very Shane Meadows, right down to the casting of Meadows regular Perry Benson in the role of “Dad”. This particular actor is never going to be the next James Bond, but it’s to be hoped that he one day gets to play people who aren’t completely scuzzy and grubby and just plain revolting. Meanwhile, here he is, being all those things, and more.....

Here’s a joyfully unpleasant clip (below the break) from Steven Sheil’s sly British horror, Mum & Dad, which despite some judicious blurring is really not “safe for work"…
Mum & Dad gets a festive multi-platform release in the UK on the 26th December.
You can read the review and watch the trailer here, and the official website can be found over here.

**Please Note: This will be at the top for a while; be sure to scroll down for updated news stories!** Horror may currently be in a slump, but the 2008 American Film Market has shown a huge light at the end of the tunnel. This year showcased a record number of horror titles and Dread Central was on hand to catch a great deal of them. Some were good, some were bad but all showed that this genre still has plenty of lifeblood left. Many exhibitors were also kind enough to show us movie promos, while others coldly showed us the door (Lesbian Vampire Killers, I’m looking at you). The most promising show previews were easily Night of the Demons and Clive Barker’s Dread, with plenty of new projects being announced. Check out our full Afm '08 coverage here.

Steven Sheil’s Mum and Dad has gotten a good amount of notice in these parts - you can find James’ review here - tanks to its particularly nasty take on family dynamics and with the film’s UK release jsut around the corner it should come as no surprise that there are new trailers and the like in the works. What does come as a bit of a happy surprise is that we’ve got an exclusive early look at the brand new trailer - not due to roll out to the UK public for another day or two - here at Twitch. You can check it out below the break in the Twitch Player.

Steven Sheil’s new feature, Mum & Dad, wears its many influences proudly and mostly gets away with it; largely because the social milieu in which Sheil sets his torture porn-inflected debut draws on some peculiarly British cultural reference points. After the briefest of set-ups we’re planted straight onto the set of the Saw movies, by way of Hostel and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with a brief detour into Seven territory. Only, Mum & Dad is populated by a soap cast. Living in a Coronation Street house. Next to Heathrow airport.
