A dozen years have gone by since the release of director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch the prequel Here). Looking back at the project now, van Heijningen has some regrets over the way the special effects were handled on the film, and that he was never able to make the sequel they had plans for.
Directed by van Heijningen from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer and based on the short story Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell (using the pen name Don A. Stuart), The Thing 2011 has the following synopsis: After Norwegian researchers discover an alien ship buried in the ice, paleontologist Kate Lloyd joins the team at the isolated Arctic outpost to investigate. She finds an organism that appears to have perished in the crash eons ago but, in fact, is about to awake. Freed from its icy prison,...

“The War to End All Wars” is the title of Timeless‘ Season 2 premiere, and could perhaps also be used to describe the tension between Lucy and her mother, as the NBC drama returns on Sunday, March 11 at 10/9c.
When last we tuned into the time-travel drama — nearly a year ago, and months before the series would be cancelled and then thankfully renewed over a course of days — Lucy (played by Abigail Spencer) returned home to the present, where and when she confessed to her mother Carol (Susanna Thompson) the incredible, death-defying journeys through time she had been on.

The Thing (2011) Film Review, a movie directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen, Kim Bubbs, Stig Henrik Hoff, Jonathan Walker, and Carsten Bjornlund.
One could say that The Thing (2011) is like the Halloween remake and the Star Wars prequels: the original is better than new incarnation in almost every way. Like the Halloween remake, what was copied over into this The Thing from John Carpenter’s original film was done better the first time and what material was originated in this film should have been expanded upon. Like the Star Wars prequels, The Thing should have created its special effects in the same manner as the original film instead of going the hyper real CGI route. In that way, this prequel and its effects could have seamlessly transferred the viewer from one film (the prequel) to the...

2011.s The Thing is an unnecessary CGI-slick prequel to John Carpenter.s 1982 classic sci-fi/horror film The Thing. It isn.t horrible and does several things right, but is easily forgettable as soon as the end credits roll. Based on John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There?," the prequel was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and written by Eric Heisserer. The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paul Braunstein, Trond Espen Seim, Kim Bubbs, Jørgen Langhelle, Jan Gunnar Røise, Stig Henrik Hoff, Kristofer Hivju, Jo Adrian Haavind, and Carsten Bjørnlund. The Thing a prequel to John Carpenters original masterpiece and is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen and Kim Bubbs. To be honest The Thing 2011 was not very good (read the review). Why? Way too much CGI, and to make it worse bad CGI. I knew the film was in trouble from one of the scenes at the beginning of the film. A snow truck goes head first into a deep ravine, we were immediately assaulted with a pair of fully CGI'ed pair of glasses on the windshield of the truck. A video showing the practical effects for the film was released from Amaigamated Dynamics the company that actually produced the effects.

In his editorial on The Thing premake, Michael Felsher mused that something had to have gone wrong during post-production on the flick. The film just switches gears into a CGI-laden mess. Where were the practical effects? Well, sadly ... we're about to show them to you.

The science fiction-horror movie The Thing, directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., is a prelude to John Carpenter’s 1982 film of the same name.
In other words, the 2011 Thing is a prequel serving as a sequel to a remake of a movie that was originally made in 1951 and directed by Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks. Hmmm.
The movie is set at a remote Antarctic research station where paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and pilot Carter (Joel Edgerton, Warrior) discover a mysterious organism buried in the ice. It’s not too long before a simple experiment frees the strange creature, seemingly an extraterrestrial lifeform, from its frozen prison. This October two horror movies are playing in theaters nationwide Paranormal Activity 3 and The Thing Prequel. While Paranormal Activity 3 did great, The Thing pretty much flopped. A couple of reasons, one is horror fans are tired of remakes and prequels to classic horror movies. Another reason is most of the youth in American don’t know about John Carpenters The Thing and if they do they like the classic for a reason, it’s a classic.

The Thing prequel landed in theaters October 14 (check out our The Thing review) and star Kim Bubbs is thrilled to finally have audiences witness what it was that she and the entire Thing crew had worked so hard on for months. Above all else, Bubbs tells us exclusively, they were seeking to pay tribute to the John Carpenter directed classic, 1982’s The Thing, and hopes fans see that love in every frame of film.
Bubbs also told Movie Fanatic about the Canadian shoot and how their Arctic freeze was really shot during one of the warmest winters in that country’s history. Needless to say, the special effects weren’t the only thing that were hot during The Thing shoot led by director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.

Title: The Thing Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kim Bubbs, Jorgen Langhelle, Jan Gunnar Rosie Well the first 30 minutes-and-change of this remake of a remake (1982 – original was 1951) is basically a wash for the most part. If you can plow through that portion then The Thing actually proves to have something to it; even though this is essentially the same screenplay from the 1982 version that starred Kurt Russell. The gist of the story is that a discovery is made just outside of a remote base on Antarctica in 1982. A group of scientists...

The biggest concern with any remake, prequel, or sequel is how it handles the original material. Naturally, the prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing is at the top of this list. We chatted with co-star Kim Bubbs, who told us why we shouldn't worry. Tell me about this new The Thing. How will it differentiate itself from Carpenter's Thing? Well, it's a prequel. We didn't want to mess with Carpenter's The Thing because it was so well-done. Ours blends seamlessly into Carpenter's film. We explore what happened at the Norwegian base. We have all those unanswered questions from Carpenter's film, so that's what we do: we delve into that. Have you faced much criticism from...

As the list of films getting the remake treatment grows each year, John Carpenter's The Thing is instead taking a different direction by going down the prequel route.
Choosing to add to the mythos instead of rewrite it, director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr's horror flick - which hits Us cinemas on October 14 and the UK on December 2 - will tell the story leading up to the 1982 classic of the same name.

The Thing a prequel to John Carpenters original masterpiece is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen and Kim Bubbs. A new clip for The Thing was released today on MSN for Universal Pictures entitled Paranoia. “You can’t trust them” she says maybe you can and well maybe you can’t; you never know where The Thing will be. Thi fact causes extreme paranoia among the research team. The Thing a prequel to John Carpenter’s remake will be shown in theaters October 14, 2011.

In our further coverage of the 2011 Eyegore Awards held this past Friday, September 23rd, at the Globe Theater at Universal Studios in Hollywood, California (see our report of the award ceremony itself here, courtesy of our own Heather Wixson), this writer hit the event as well and brought back some ocular candy from the carpet as well as interviews with a few of the night’s principals from the same.
Paying respect to some of horror’s most venerated players and notable newcomers, the event was hosted (as it has been in years past) by The Lost Boys co-star Corey Feldman (who arrived with two blondes and attired in a hybrid glam/matador get-up) and attended by celebrity presenters Thomas Jane (The Mist), filmmaker and musician Rob Zombie, James Gunn (Slither, Super), Calico Cooper (daughter of shock-rocker Alice Cooper) and Frozen and Hatchet director Adam Green.

The Thing a prequel to John Carpenters original is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen and Kim Bubbs. Antarctica is the last place you want is to be cooped up in with a dozen Norwegian guys in the 2011 release of The Thing. Universal Pictures let loose a fast paced Red-Band Trailer to keep the hype going the much anticipated theatrical release for The Thing on October 14, 2011. The trailer is really short, just under a minute to be exact and includes a pretty cool scene. Let’s hope that Universal has just not blown the whole movie by showing us the best part of The Thing prequel.

Following on from the new TV spot released last week, IGN have debuted the new red band trailer for the prequel-come-remake of The Thing, which is helmed by director Matthijs van Heijningen and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen and Kim Bubbs as members of the Norwegian team who were the first to face the alien enemy in the Antarctic.
Much like the first trailer released for the film, this new red band version gives way too much of the film away… including some of the films more grotesque scenes
Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself...

Yes, it's somewhat confusing for the 2011 prequel to 1982's The Thing to also be called The Thing, but it's definitely the new one that we're dealing with now, as we present a new clip from the new story of alien goings-on in the Antarctic and the dangers of thoughtlessly thawing out shapeshifting beasties. This story picks up a thread briefly touched on in the John Carpenter Thing, wherein we learn that the alien had been discovered under the Antarctic ice, deep frozen, and brought inside by the staff of a Norwegian Antarctic base. Given the havoc it wreaked in Carpenter's film, it's no spoiler to say that not all of them would, with hindsight, describe the decision to bring the thing indoors as a good one. brightcove.createExperiences();The Thing (2011) stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen and Kim Bubbs. October 14 is just around the corner and I cannot freakin’ wait to see the prequel to John Carpenter’s “The Thing” when it finally hits theaters. I’m a fan of Carpenter’s, so I’m definitely looking forward to this film. Granted, we all know what’s going to happen to everyone, but I love the “who can you really trust?” paranoia vibe Carpenter established. But we’re here to talk about the upcoming prequel. After six new images from the film hit the web yesterday, the first clip from the film has been released, and it makes sure to set in the scare factor. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Kim Bubbs, Stig Henrik Hoff, Trond Espen Seim, Jørgen Langhelle, Kristofer Hivju, Jan Gunnar Røise, and Jo Adrian Haavind. Read our exclusive interview with actress Kim Bubbs, who plays geologist Juliette in the upcoming sci-fi horror movie ‘The Thing,’ which is set to hit theaters on October 14, 2011. The film follows an investigative team as it discovers and studies an alien craft that lands at its research site in Antarctica. The film, which was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr., serves as the prequel to helmer John Carpenter’s 1982 movie of the same name. The actress, who has made a name for herself appearing on such television movies as ‘A Near Death Experience’ and ‘Her Only Child,’ discusses with us, among other things, why she was attracted to...

Apparently the UK is going to have a longer wait for Matthijs van Heijningen’s prequel to The Thing, which is also called The Thing, as a new release date has been announced of the 2nd of December 2011.
The film’s Facebook page served up the bad news but did offer us a few images of the film which we’ve not had up on the site before as slight recompense and one of them does include a flamethrower. If you’ve not seen the trailer then click here and enjoy.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton lead the cast which includes Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Eric Christian Olsen, Kim Bubbs, Stig Henrik Hoff, Jonathan Walker and the film is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.

John Carpenter's The Thing is the best practical effects driven film I have ever seen. I think it has a great concept that has you guessing at every turn. Now this film also titled The Thing is being called a prequel of sorts, and although some aspects of the trailer also say remake, I do like that it feels like we are right back in icy Antarctica with no way out. Especially when there is an alien based organism floating around. It looks like they are willing to step up the horror and stay true to the original with practical effects, but I do expect some CG in there somewhere -- they can't help it, it is 2011. There are a few choice scenes and setups in the trailer that make it look exactly like the 1982 film. From the looks of it the characters even seem similar with Joel Edgerton looking...

Imagine a parasitic like alien inhabiting your body. Not a friendly thought, right? Well, that is what you get with the first trailer for John Carpenter’s The Thing. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., the film tells the story of ill-fated Norwegian research camp that dug up a shapeshifting alien something in the permafrost of Antarctica. Sounds familiar, right? The thriller stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen, Kim Bubbs, Trond Espen Seim, Stig Henrik Hoff, Jonathan Walker, and Carsten Bjørnlund
Check out the trailer below.
Having never seen the first The Thing, my expectations are not that high. But judging from the trailer, the film should live up to the hype it is currently building. In addition to the trailer we have our first look at the poster for the film. Based on that, I can see that there are some scary changes in the wind.

The Thing Trailer has premiered. Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.‘s The Thing (2011) movie trailer stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Ulrich Thomsen. The Thing‘s plot synopsis: “Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller “The Thing,” paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

Do you find it strange that the prequel to "The Thing" is the called "The Thing"? Seems like that would be extremely confusing for anyone new to the property. Anyway, the first official trailer for the Ronald D. Moore scribed prequel to "The Thing" has hit the interwebs today.
Synopsis:
Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists.
Of course the question remains, will the creature in the The Thing prequel be as mind-blowing and as cutting edge as Rob Botin's creature from John Carpenter's 1982 film?
Check out the trailer after the break.

Seemingly dormant since appearing at the New York Comic Con last year [1], Universal's prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing has started to show signs of life this week. A teaser poster arrived (see below) and now there is a trailer. The movie tells the tale of an ill-fated Norwegian research camp that dug up a shapeshifting alien something in the permafrost of Antarctica, as seen in the early scenes of John Carpenter's movie. It stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen, Kim Bubbs, Trond Espen Seim, Stig Henrik Hoff, Jonathan Walker, and Carsten Bjørnlund and was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. Check out the trailer below. The question is: how does one make a film that acts as a prequel to one of the best effects-based films of the '80s, and which takes place in basically the same environment and under the same circumstances,...

Not much has been seen of the upcoming prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 masterpiece, The Thing, but what we have seen certainly has got us interested. With only a handful of stills released, it is with rabid anticipation that we lay our eyes on the official movie poster.
Keeping the same title as the earlier movie, The Thing chronicles the events in the doomed Norwegian camp whose aftermath is only glimpsed at in John Carpenter’s movie.
The Thing is due to appear in October 2011, and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen and Kim Bubbs.
