True Detective, about a murder hunt in Louisiana, is already being hailed as a rival to Breaking Bad. Sarah Hughes meets the show's unlikely creator
Three years ago, Nic Pizzolatto was an assistant professor of literature at DePauw University in Indiana, a job he "fell into" rather than loved, and one he was desperate to escape. Television seemed like an impossible dream. "The idea was ludicrous," he says. "I grew up in a working-class Catholic family in south Louisiana. I went to a state university. I taught literature, wrote a novel that was the novel I wanted to write and got a couple of good reviews but no real traction. I had no idea how to get a job in TV."
What he did have, however, was desperation. When his 2010 novel Galveston, about a smalltime criminal on the run from New Orleans, attracted attention from agents interested in optioning it,...

With the 2014 Winter Olympic Games just a week away, on Thursday (Jan. 30) "Today" welcomed 2002 Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hughes to preview the women's figure skaters the nation will be watching in Sochi.
There's Gracie Gold, who absolutely killed the 2014 U.S. Nationals; Ashley Wagner, a veteran who had a rough time at the same competition; and Polina Edmunds, who is just 15 years old, but burst onto the scene to take second place at Nationals.
Hughes talks about how for Edmunds, this is her first international competition at the senior level -- can you imagine your first international competition being the Olympics?
As for Gold, Hughes says, "She's fabulous, and I'm really rooting for her because she's such an exciting skater ... she does these phenomenal jumps, these triple-triples, and she just sparkles."
"This is [Wagner's] first Olympic games [too], so she's never had this experience before. But she's had a steady stream of...

This was inevitable, but allow me to formalize a complaint about a growing issue of Idol‘s 13th season: Jennifer Lopez is clearly too nice. We’ve only seen Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban voice “no” votes after the others have said “yes.” When’s Jennifer Lopez going to reject a country balladeer who cares too much about Rascal Flatts? When’s Jennifer Lopez going to monologue about a loudmouth starlet who’s “not ready yet” after Keith has said yes? I need to see more of Jennifer’s pet peeves. I’d clap at the TV if Jennifer said, “Sorry, dear, I don’t do blue hair” to some punk poetess. Invalid comment? Maybe. But it’d solidify J-Lo as a singular presence on the panel. So far she’s sympathetic, earnest, and sometimes up for a laugh. She literally said to one underdog contestant, “There’s a blossom to be had here.

Viewing figures for 2012 Oscars up despite Twitter criticism of host's controversial 'blackface' sketch
Viewing figures for Sunday's Oscars ceremony were up by an estimated 4% compared to last year's show, despite mixed reviews for Billy Crystal's ninth stint as host.
Early predictions suggest that ABC's three-hour broadcast drew 39.3 million viewers, compared to 37.9 million for Anne Hathaway and James Franco's widely derided tenure in 2011. However, it appears likely that viewers were older than for last year's event, reflecting 63-year-old Crystal's veteran status. Nevertheless, ABC said it was the second-largest TV audience for the Academy Awards since 2007 and pointed out that the show retained all of its 2011 audience in the coveted 18-49 year-old age group.
Crystal's performance as host has come in for criticism, with many commentators labelling it safe and bland. Controversy, in particular, continues to rage over the comic's decision to appear in blackface as Hollywood legend Sammy Davis...

Fun on ice comes early when mom is Nancy Kerrigan — 3½-year-old daughter Nicole first donned skates when she was only 14 months old.
“She seems to like it,” the two-time Olympic medalist tells People of her daughter, who doesn’t mind wearing the black skates handed down from brothers Matthew, 16, and Brian, 6½.
Larry Zimmerman Photography
Right now Nicole is more into costume changes — Snow White and Cinderella — than doing leaps and twirls on the ice, but Kerrigan, 42, says she’s open to her daughter choosing the demanding sport.
“If that’s what she wants to do, I’m happy to help her,...

We're suspicious of trailers, but the first real glimpses of the Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey were too big to miss
The big story
We don't normally get that excited about trailers. They have their place, but for the most part they're slippery, unreliable things - a keyhole shot of a bigger idea, designed to sell their wares to the largest audience, with little regard for the nature of their source material.
That said, there were a couple of promos released this week that even brine-soaked snobs like us couldn't ignore. Tuesday saw the release of the Dark Knight Rises trailer, the first real look at Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman film. Our go-to-guy for all things bat is Ben Child, who finally switched off the Bat Signal he'd installed on his roof and welcomed the caped crusader's return. "As with the best trailers,...

Between Michelle Kwan and Sarah Hughes, they’ve won enough ice-skating medals to fill a museum. But in recent years, the skaters have set their sights on a different goal: getting a college diploma. On Saturday, Kwan earned a bachelor's degree in international studies with a minor in political science from the University of Denver. "It feels great," the five-time world champion told People about being a college grad. "I've always known you can only skate for so many years and then you have to rely on your education to carry you through life." And the 28-year-old, who earned a...
