In Stuart Baird's 2002 film "Star Trek: Nemesis," Tom Hardy plays Shinzon, a human clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), grown in a lab by the dastardly spies in the Romulan Empire. When their clone plot didn't quite turn out the way that they wanted, the Romulans disavowed Shinzon's existence and sent him as a young boy to be enslaved in a Reman mine. The Remans were a cousin species of the Romulans that had been enslaved for many generations. Shinzon would grow up among the goblin-looking Remans, sharing their plight. Perhaps possessed of Picard's knack for leadership, Shizon would eventually lead a Reman uprising against the Romulans. "Nemesis" was the first time Trekkies ever caught a glimpse of the Remans. Shinzon's massive warship, the Scimitar, would be staffed entirely by Reman officers.
Most notably, Shinzon's unnamed right-hand man, a Reman Voiceroy, would be played by Ron Perlman, an...

Zack Snyder dropped the first official trailer for Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire during Netflix’s Geeked Week 2023. The three-minute trailer focuses on Sofia Boutella as Kora, a former soldier who is called upon to gather fighters to take on the Motherworld.
Director Zack Snyder co-wrote the screenplay with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten. Snyder also serves as a producer along with his wife, Deborah, and Eric Newman and Wesley Coller. Johnstad, Hatten, Bergen Swanson, and Sarah Bowen executive produce.
During a Geeked Week Q&a, Snyder discussed creating the world of Rebel Moon.

Netflix continues to bet big on Zack Snyder, providing him the budget and scope to launch his own, original sci-fi franchise with Rebel Moon. And, as the first part of the saga, A Child Of Fire prepares to invade our screens in a little more than a month, here's the giant new trailer showing of the scope and ambition of his combat-happy film:
Here's the story of Rebel Moon: After crash landing on a moon in the furthest reaches of the universe, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a stranger with a mysterious past, begins a new life among a peaceful settlement of farmers. But she soon becomes their only hope for survival when the tyrannical Regent Balisarius (Fra Fee) and his cruel emissary, Admiral Noble (Ed Skrein), discover the farmers have unwittingly sold their crops to the Bloodaxes (Cleopatra Coleman and Ray Fisher) — leaders of a fierce group of insurgents hunted by the Motherworld.

Zack Snyder is getting the gang together in the new trailer for Rebel Moon, his Netflix space opera that’s like Star Wars meets The Magnificent Seven.
In the feature, a mysterious woman named Kora (Sofia Boutella) forms a ragtag team in order to defend a peaceful farming village from nefarious imperialists who want to take their food and starve them out.
Per the logline, Kora is “tasked with finding fighters who would risk their lives to defend the people of Veldt, Kora and Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a tenderhearted farmer naive in the realities of war, journey to different worlds in search of the Bloodaxes, and assemble a small band of warriors who share a common need for redemption along the way: Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a pilot and gun for hire; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a legendary commander; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a master swordswoman; Tarak (Staz Nair), a captive with...

From its autumnal aesthetic to its haunted history, Massachusetts is always a great place to spend the Halloween season, but horror fans were particularly spoiled this year. In addition to the usual festivities in Salem and repertory programming at Boston theaters, we had no less than four horror conventions throughout the state in the span of two months: Silver Scream Con, Terror Con, MonstahXpo, and Hometown Haunts & Hops.
Many convention memories are made in hotel bars, so why not set one in a brewery? The inaugural Hometown Haunts & Hops took place at Mayflower Brewing in Plymouth on October 28, providing a fun environment on the unseasonably warm Saturday before Halloween. Curated by America’s Hometown Horror podcast and Inebri-Art, both based in Plymouth, the event is poised to become an annual occurrence.
Lively but low-key, Hometown Haunts & Hops is a refreshingly intimate alternative to the often overwhelming convention experience. There were no shortage of activities,...

While it feels silly to point out that Alan Wake 2 is a horror game, much has been made of the transition from Alan Wake’s style of Action Horror to Alan Wake 2’s brand of more “pure” Survival Horror. In fact, quite a few people seem to be wondering if Alan Wake 2 will be too scary for them to enjoy.
That topic even came up during our recent interview with Alan Wake 2 directors Sam Lake and Kyle Rowley. The pair were well aware of the challenges of making a properly scary horror game that isn’t so effective that people end up not wanting to play it. That’s especially true for this sequel that is building upon a scary (but generally slightly more accessible) horror gaming experience.
So how scary is Alan Wake 2? Truth be told, it’s a walk through a slightly spooky park compared to the absolute scariest video games out there.

Evildoers beware! Sylvester Stallone is getting back in the ring with Amazon MGM Studios to develop Samaritan 2, a sequel to the Italian Stallion’s 2022 superhero action movie. Bragi F. Schut, who wrote the first film, returns to pen the sequel, with Stallone producing alongside his Balboa Productions partner Braden Aftergood. In addition to producing the film, Stallone reprises his role as Joe from the original.
Here’s the official synopsis for Samaritan:
Thirteen-year-old Sam Cleary (Javon “Wanna” Walton) suspects that his mysterious and reclusive neighbor Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone), is actually a legend hiding in plain sight. Twenty-five years ago, Granite City’s super-powered vigilante, Samaritan, was reported dead after a fiery warehouse battle with his rival, Nemesis. Most believe Samaritan perished in the fire, but some in the city, like Sam, have hope that he is still alive. With crime on the rise and the city on the brink of chaos,...

Tom Hardy's first major film gag was playing one of the many faceless soldiers in Ridley Scott's overwrought war thriller "Black Hawk Down" in 2001. The actor was only about 24 at the time and had just come off of the acclaimed HBO WWII miniseries "Band of Brothers." His second feature was also a war drama called "Deserter," a low-profile project that was released in 2002. Casting directors seemed to like the way Hardy looked in uniform.
Also in 2002, however, Hardy was offered a higher-profile role -- and a very challenging one -- when he was cast as Shinzon in Stuard Baird's "Star Trek: Nemesis." Shinzon was a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) who had been raised in a Reman mining colony, and who would rise up against his Roluman oppressors and attempt to take control of the Romulan Star Empire. Shinzon was essentially a younger, more aggressive version of Picard,...

What’s the first thing you think of when you picture Patrick Stewart? You can say Poop from The Emoji Movie all you want but we all know you immediately saw his bald head. Like Yul Brynner, Telly Savalas and Bruce Willis, the cueball look is one of Patrick Stewart’s trademarks. As it turns out, the 83-year-old actor has been perfecting it since he was a teenager.
Patrick Stewart opened up about his premature baldness in his new book, “Making It So: A Memoir”, available from Simon & Schuster. “By the age of nineteen, I was as bald on top as I am now.” But Stewart remained hopeful – at least where his career was concerned. “What I cared about, though, was dating. Attractive young women, I assumed, were not going to want to go out with a young bald guy–not like what’s become socially acceptable, even desirable,...

One of Tom Hardy’s first major roles found him starring alongside Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Nemesis, but Hardy didn’t make a particularly good impression on Stewart at the time.
Patrick Stewart shared his thoughts about Star Trek: Nemesis in his new memoir, ‘Making It So.’ He found Nemesis to be “particularly weak” compared to Star Trek: First Contact. “I didn’t have a single exciting scene to play,” Stewart wrote, “and the actor who portrayed the movie’s villain, Shinzon, was an odd, solitary young man from London. His name was Tom Hardy.” Shinzon was a discarded clone of Jean-Luc Picard raised by Remans.
Stewart continued, “Tom wouldn’t engage with any of us on a social level: never said ‘Good morning,’ never said ‘Good night,’ and spent the hours he wasn’t needed on set in his trailer with his girlfriend. He was by no means...

Filmmaker and video essayist Patrick H. Willems has some thoughts about Zack Snyder (who will henceforth be known as our "himbo auteur"). He's proposed that the key to understanding the director is his love of John Boorman's 1981 medieval fantasy epic "Excalibur." Snyder has expressed his love of Boorman's film many times over the years, even incorporating it into his version of the Caped Crusader's origin story in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Snyder's ultimate goal as an artist, Willems reasons, is basically making his version of "Excalibur," a film Roger Ebert once described as "a record of the comings and goings of arbitrary, inconsistent, shadowy, figures who are not heroes but simply giants run amok."
The more you think about it, the sounder this argument becomes. It certainly explains Snyder's tendency to craft brutal, bombastic films that prioritize spectacle over coherent storytelling or political messaging. Indeed, given his love of mythic storytelling,...

Netflix’s first batch of official photos from Zack Snyder’s science fiction epic Rebel Moon shows off the film’s key players. Inspired by Akira Kurosawa 1954 film Seven Samurai, Rebel Moon takes place in a distant part of the galaxy and follows Kora, a mysterious woman (played by Sofia Boutella) who’s tasked with saving a peaceful colony from being wiped out by an invading force.
The cast of the two-part epic includes Ed Skrein as Admiral Atticus Noble, a nefarious Imperium enforcer; Charlie Hunnam as Kai, a mercenary pilot whose Tawau-Class freighter will prove invaluable to Kora’s quest; Michiel Huisman as Gunnar, a Veldt farmer who knows little of the galaxy outside of his small, quiet corner of the galaxy; and Djimon Hounsou as General Titus, a hardened gladiator who once served the Imperium.

You’d think there wouldn’t be all that many surprises in a ranking of the various Star Trek movies. Official fan doctrine tends to elevate a select handful of them to the very top while dismissing, fairly or unfairly, others. But the reality is, there’s such a wide array of tones across Star Trek films that one fan’s skippable entry is another fan’s favorite (well…most of the time).
We chose a panel of our most decorated Starfleet experts to vote on the highs and lows of the Star Trek movie franchise. There’s probably a few surprises in here, but one thing we hope we managed to do, if nothing else, is dispel the “odd number/even number” superstition about these flicks.

Star Trek: Into Darkness
It’s hard to imagine any entry in the entire franchise straying further from what Star Trek is all about than Into Darkness.

Video game adaptations: one of cinema’s most hated-on subgenres. Whenever another beloved controllable franchise is announced for moviegoing treatment, eyes roll. Critics quiver. Visions of Mark Wahlberg as Max Payne or Uwe Boll’s crimes against both gamersphere credibility and audience standards montage a hard-fast argument for such scoffs.
Fantastical play-alongs turned theatrical try-hards have long become the butt of many online jokes, and while titles such as Detective Pikachu and both Sonic the Hedgehog films disprove “cursed” trends, I’d argue that not all video game adaptations are created equal.
Horror video game adaptations maketh the best video game adaptations, and that’s by an Arklay country mile.

Like many others from my generation, I grew up obsessed with gaming and paleontology. So imagine the grin on my 8-year-old face when I wandered into the videogame section of my local Blockbuster and found a title literally called “Dino Crisis”. Ignoring the back of the case (not to mention the Esrb rating), I begged my parents to rent the game and raced home to try out what I thought was going to be a fun little shooter.
Suffice to say that I couldn’t get 15 minutes into the game before turning the TV off and resigning myself to reptilian nightmares. Years later, I revisited the game with a friend and beat it all in one incredibly entertaining sitting, defeating my own childhood trauma and becoming a massive fan of Capcom’s other iconic survival horror franchise.

Albert Pyun, the director behind cult favorites like Cyborg, Nemesis and The Sword and the Sorcerer, has passed away. He was 69.
Pyun’s wife, producer Cynthia Curnan, posted on her Facebook, “Albert Pyun passed away Saturday, November 26, at 5:50 pm. I sat with him for his last breath that sounded like he was releasing the weight of the world.”
Pyun had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and his health had been on the decline for some time. Earlier this month, Curnan posted, in part, the following as a call to all fans: “Albert took another downturn. I could tell he feared going down again. He was working too feverishly. I asked ‘What’s the rush?’ He said ‘If I stop, that’s it.’…Please write a message to him for me to read. A personal message from you to him will make him really happy. They think he does not have much time left.
