Tonight’s CMT Music Awards show will endeavor to emphasize what’s currently flameworthy, to borrow a word that has long since been retired from the telecast’s original name. Prime performance slots have been given to country music figures who are still on the ascent, from still-fairly-freshly-minted superstars Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson to up-and-comers who really seem fresh out of the oven, like Megan Moroney and TikTok sensation Dasha.
To a less emphatic extent, “we also know that we have to pay homage to the artists that got us here,” says executive producer John Hamlin, which for the 2024 show means paying tribute to two icons of ’90s country. “So we’re thrilled to be honoring Trisha Yearwood this year, something that Margaret Comeaux and Leslie Fram [his fellow producer] spent a lot of time orchestrating to make happen for the show. The CMT Music Awards have a five-way tie for the most nominations going into the 2024 telecast, with Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Cody Johnson, Megan Moroney and the show’s host, Kelsea Ballerini, picking up three nods apiece.
The nominations arrived Wednesday, less than a month before the CMTs take place at Austin’s Moody Center on April 7.
As has been the custom with the CMT Awards of late, the lineup of nominees for the top prize, video of the year, is a particularly loaded one, with 16 candidates presented to fans for the initial round of voting, to be whittled down to six before the second round begins on April 1, finally knocked down to three top vote-getters as more voting ensues on show day.
Up for video of the year besides Jelly Roll, Wilson, Ballerini and Johnson are Ashley McBryde, Brandy Clark featuring Brandi Carlile, Brothers Osborne, Darius Rucker, Hardy, Jason Aldean,...

CMT and CBS announced Wednesday night that “The CMT Music Awards” will be moving away from its traditional base in Nashville to Austin for 2023, with the broadcast taking place from that city’s Moody Center next April 2.
The news means that the CMA Awards telecast (which is about to air on ABC Nov. 9) is now the only one of the three major country music awards shows still taking place in Nashville — with the other two suddenly both earmarked for Texas. The third show in this triad, the ACM Awards, which aired from Nashville during the pandemic but otherwise have had the out-of-town novelty factor in airing from Las Vegas in recent years, recently announced a move to Dallas for 2023.
The CMT/CBS announcement was made at a Carrie Underwood concert at that new facility, where the star was joined on-stage — by Kelsea Ballerini, who will be returning for her third year as co-host.

When Leslie Fram, formerly a top programmer and morning cohost in radio’s alternative format, made the jump from FM to television by coming aboard the CMT network as the VP in charge of music in 2011, she liked almost everything she had to learn as a quick study in country music. That ranged from the greater collegiality of country’s artist community to how much earlier the music showcases started in Nashville than they had in New York. She didn’t even have that much reason to miss rock ‘n’ roll, when Keith Urban, Brad Paisley and Eric Church were putting on what basically amounted to rock shows.
There was just one thing she couldn’t get used to — and still hasn’t: Where were the women, in a genre that once had Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Shania Twain and the Dixie Chicks as its figureheads and superstars?

The country music community gathered today at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville to remember one of their own. As it might be expected, the best way to honor and memorialize one of the genre’s greatest hitmakers was found in song.
Naomi Judd: A River of Time was carried live and commercial-free on CMT.
“It’s so weird, yet so natural, to be in front of (the fans), our chosen family for 38 years,” Wynonna Judd said near the end of the memorial. “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine,” she said, quoting a gospel hymn,
Then, Wynonna said that she would be going on the 11-date national tour that she and her mother had previously announced.
“The show must go on, as hard as it may be,” she said.

In the formerly cable-only show’s first year premiering as a prime-time broadcast TV tentpole, the CMT Music Awards will have country star Kelsea Ballerini returning as co-host, joined this year by actor Anthony Mackie, CBS announced Thursday.
Ballerini is taking on hosting duties for a second straight year. In 2021, she co-hosted with fellow country star Kane Brown, who was then in his second year in the role.
Mackie, best known for his roles in Marvel’s “Avengers” franchise, most recently as the co-lead in the Disney Plus limited series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” is a surprise choice to host a country awards show, although he did present an award on last year’s telecast.
The CMT Awards have primarily been hosted by country music figures in recent years, but the show does have a long history of bringing in actors to share the duties. Sarah Hyland co-hosted...

CBS and CMT have set a new April airdate and venue for the 2022 CMT Music Awards. CBS’ inaugural broadcast of country music’s entirely fan-voted awards show will now take place live Monday, April 11 from 8-11 p.m. live Et/delayed Pt from Nashville’s Municipal Auditorium and various locations in and around the city. The show will also be available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.
It’s been a bit of musical chairs for dates for the CMT Music Awards and Grammys on CBS. The CMT Music Awards, originally set for April 3, were displaced by the Grammy Awards, which shifted to April 3 after Covid forced a postponement of that ceremony’s original date in January.
It will be the first time the CMT Music Awards will air on CBS after ViacomCBS announced it was moving the annual country music awards show from cabler CMT to its broadcast sister.

After taking a break last year from the show’s usual artist-honoring format to put a pre-recorded spotlight on pandemic heroes, “CMT Artists of the Year” will return to both a live broadcast and music celebrities being celebrated in its 2021 incarnation, set for Oct. 13.
The five stars selected by the country music network for 2021 honors are Chris Stapleton, Gabby Barrett, Kane Brown, Kelsea Ballerini and Luke Combs.
Of this year’s class, two — Combs and Brown — are holdovers from 2019, when CMT last presented its “Artists of the Year” in the traditional manner. Ballerini was last feted in 2018, when the entire lineup was devoted to women artists. Stapleton had been part of the bill the year before that. That leaves Barrett, who’s currently up for best new artist at the CMA Awards, as the newcomer of the otherwise young-but-veteran bunch.

Pioneering Black country superstar Charley Pride will be the subject of a 90-minute CMT special set for August, the network is announcing today, with stars like Luke Combs, Garth Brooks, Mickey Guyton and Darius Rucker participating in the commemoration.
Titled “CMT Giants: Charley Pride,” the special will be arriving when Pride-pride is still at a peak level, with his name constantly brought up in the current conversations about race and country music, and how his ascent to the top of the genre in the 1970s represented both an enormous breakthrough as well as an opportunity to keep the door open that was lost.
The special will premiere August 25 at 9 p.m. Et on the cable network.

On Tuesday evening, a video of Morgan Wallen casually tossing off a racial slur emerged. By Wednesday morning, his career was systematically being dismantled. In a blowback unprecedented for a white male country music star — the Chicks were ostracized for far less in 2003 — Wallen had his music removed from both country radio and streaming playlists, lost his booking agent WME, and had his eligibility for the upcoming ACM Awards put on ice. His record label, Big Loud, made the announcement that they were suspending Wallen’s contract “indefinitely.”

Jennifer Nettles is set to receive the first honorary Equal Play Awards from the CMT Music Awards for her outspokenness and advocacy for women in country music, the network is revealing today.
The presentation of the award to Nettles, who performs as a solo artist as well as half of the duo Sugarland, will be preceded by a three-minute tribute video on the telecast. Among those offering testimonials to Nettles and her efforts are Sheryl Crow, Tanya Tucker, Maren Morris, Cam, Kelsea Ballerini, Ashley McBryde, Mickey Guyton and Gabby Barrett.

The dog and pony show just wasn’t doing it for Hailey Whitters.
After her self-released, heartbreaking ode to the cruel realities of the Nashville music business, “Ten Year Town,” took off while she was waiting tables, Whitters found herself doing the usual rounds to major labels — singing a few songs, going through the motions, hearing the excuses for why they wouldn’t be able to sign her after all. CMT is having its two biggest annual franchises trade places. After it was previously announced that “The CMT Music Awards” would move from its usual June berth to October 14, the yearly “Artists of the Year” special that normally would have taken place around then is being bumped up to June 3 — retooled to have the participating stars celebrating frontline heroes of the pandemic rather than being honored themselves.
The 2020 edition of the special has been rebranded “CMT Celebrates Our Heroes: An Artists of the Year Special.” Thomas Rhett, Miranda Lambert, Florida Georgia Line, Brothers Osborne, Kelsea Ballerini, Lady Antebellum and Little Big Town are the artists named for this year’s telecast, which, like all other music specials for the foreseeable future, will feature at-home performances without the usual live audience.
The show is set for Wednesday, June 3 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt on Cmt.

Cmt passed something like its own Era today, pledging to evenly split the video airtime on its country music channels between female and male artists.

“At Cmt, we are stepping up our own commitments, in addition to our work through the Cmt Next Women of Country franchise, and will be announcing a new initiative in the coming weeks that will spark this much-needed change in our industry.”
