Hollywood remakes are always a mixed bag. Some manage to inject fresh energy into the stories they ape, while others seemingly exist only to remind us of their own pointlessness. That said, I’m looking forward to next year’s RoboCop reboot.
The film’s first trailer, which arrived in September, was surprisingly engrossing; its blend of sleek special effects and gritty realism seems like it could really pay off at the box office. Now, the film’s official Facebook page is teasing the impending arrival of a second trailer with a cluster of new images from RoboCop. The trailer is set to arrive in two days, but you can check out the images below:
Though the images don’t offer much by way of new information about the remake’s plot, they do showcase RoboCop‘s excellent cast of characters. The shots include protagonist Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman), who...

RoboCop has released a batch of new character images online, ahead of an official trailer launch later this week. The new images show off a clutch of key players, including Joel Kinnaman's titular hero, Samuel L. Jackson's flamboyant TV host, and Gary Oldman's put-upon scientist, Dr. Dennett Norton. There's also a first glimpse at Jennifer Ehle and Jackie Earle Haley as Liz Kline and Maddox respectively, while the Oldman image counts down just three days until the trailer's arrival. The remake will retell the story of hero cop...

We’re in a bit of a lull as far as movie releases are concerned right now, as we wait for the award season films to start rolling in. Of course, this also means we’ll start getting trailers for the movies coming out in 2014. In this week’s installment of Trailer Trashin’, I take aim at the first trailer for next year’s remake of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven masterpiece RoboCop.

Though almost all the primary roles have now been cast, RoboCop remake director Jose Padilha isn’t skimping when it comes to finding good actors for smaller parts. Take, for example, his hiring of Marianne Jean-Baptiste for Karen Dean, the Police Chief of Detroit.Jean-Baptiste brings years of small-screen law enforcement to the role, having done sterling work for seven seasons on FBI crime procedural Without A Trace. She joins a cast that includes Joel Kinnaman as the titular cyborg crime fighter built around murdered cop Alex Murphy; Abbie Cornish as his wife, Ellen; Samuel L Jackson as media mogul Pat Novak; Hugh Laurie as an Omnicorp PR man; Jay Baruchel as an executive; Jackie Earle Haley as army man Maddox; Jennifer Ehle as Omnicorp’s Liz Kline and Michael Kenneth Williams as Lewis, Murphy’s partner.Padilha is getting set to start shooting next month, working from a script...

Alex Murphy's partner in Jose Padilha's "RoboCop" remake is close to being cast, and the character could be played by... Michael Kenneth Williams?
Color us curious about this deviation from Paul Verhoeven's original movie. In that film, Nancy Allen played Murphy's partner Anne Lewis, and their non-romantic relationship provided much of the film's heart. But The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Williams' character would "play the partner to [Joel] Kinnaman’s police officer Alex Murphy who is tight with Murphy’s family," making it the biggest change from the reboot's source material.
That means it will likely be Abbie Cornish's role as Murphy's wife that will be the main female character in the movie. Presumably she'll be a bit more present in this film than Murphy's wife was in Verhoeven's take. Recently cast Jennifer Ehle could also get the honor, though we don't know much about her character "Liz Kline.

The first picture of Michael Douglas and Matt Damon on the set of Steven Soderbergh's Behind the Candelabra has arrived. Douglas plays Liberace while Damon plays the entertainer's long-time companion Scott Thorson. The film is being shot for HBO based on Thorson's book [amazon asin="0517062933" text="Behind the Candelabra: My Life With Liberace"]. [E!] CBS Films has moved Martin McDonagh's Seven Psychopaths from November 2 to October 12 following its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. The Coen-brothers scripted remake Gambit was originally slotted for that date, but CBS has moved it to an undetermined early 2013 release. Meanwhile, Denzel Washington's The Equalizer will hit theaters on April 11, 2014. Additionally, Joe Wright's Anna Karenina has moved back a week from November 9 to November 16. After a short-lived stay at September 28, Warner Bros. has move the Clint Eastwood-starrer Trouble with the Curve up a week to September 21. Perhaps it will quietly show up at Tiff just as Hereafter did? The Weinstein Co.

Director Jose Padilha has been spending the past few months filling out his cast for his upcoming "RoboCop" remake, which, if you're disgusted by the idea of such a thing, we're sorry to say is still happening. If you're not bothered at the idea of yet another remake of a Paul Verhoeven sci-fi classic (what's next? A "Starship Troopers" remake? Oh, wait, that's happening too), then you'll probably be thrilled to learn that the role of Liz Kline will be filled by Jennifer Ehle. Who is Liz Kline? Actually, we don't know. Ehle joins a cast that includes the recently added Jackie Earle Haley, as well as Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish, Samuel L. Jackson and Hugh Laurie with Joel Kinnaman (AMC's "The Killing") in the title role. The actress is on a bit of an action roll, as Ehle will also appear later this year in Kathryn Bigelow's upcoming Osama Bin Laden movie,...

The 'Robocop' redo looks to be continuing its recruitment stage and is trying to sign up actress Jennifer Ehle ('The Ides of March', 'Contagion'). The 42 year old star is in negotiations to play the role of Liz Kline, another mystery character whom didn't appear in Paul Verhoeven's 1987 original sci-fi action thriller. If Ehle (below) nabs the part in the Jose Padilha helmed reboot she'll be joining a whole host of talent that includes Samuel L. Jackson ('The Avengers'), sexy Aussie Abbie Cornish ('Sucker Punch'), Jackie Earle Haley ('A Nightmare on Elm Street') and British talent Gary Oldman ('The Dark Knight Rises') and Hugh Laurie ('House'). Whilst its Swedish-American actor Joel Kinnaman ('The Killing', 'The Darkest House') who'll be climbing into the metal suit to play the title role....

Two-time Tony award winner Jennifer Ehle is becoming a very strange type of superhero all her own. She recently went from curing a global pandemic in Steven Soderbergh's Contagion to helping in the mission to assassinate Osama Bin Laden in Katherine Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, and now it seems as though she'll be taking a part in the creation of Robocop. Deadline reports that the actress is currently in talks to join the upcoming remake, which is set to be helmed by Brazilian director Jose Padilha. The site says that her character will be named Liz Kline, however, the writer doesn't give any details about her role or personality (and she wasn't a character in the Paul Verhoven original). Joel Kinnaman of AMC's The Killing is attached to play Officer Alex J. Murphy a.k.a. RoboCop and the project surrounds him with an outstanding supporting cast that includes...
