A new film and television contract has been ratified by members of SAG-aftra by a vote of 75.79 percent in favor of the agreement. While the guild sees membership of approximately 140,000 members, only an estimated 15.33 percent reportedly participated. The vote comes after months of negotiating as well as three separate 24-hour contract extensions. Now, the confirmed contract will generate an additional $256 million for performers over the next three years, with wages rising by 2.5 percent the first year and 3 percent the second and third year. The increase will create a 30 percent growth from those of three years ago. One of the main terms of the new agreement is the improvement for performers across streaming platforms, allowing actors to receive residuals for the exhibition of their work on such services after 90 days instead of a year. Background actors on the West Coast were also granted better overtime rules. “I thank the members for...

The decision follows a month of unsuccessful negotiations with studios, represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, in response to what the union’s national board has called “outrageous rollbacks that cut to the core of our basic terms and conditions.” “Your SAG-aftra negotiating team has been hard at work bargaining with the major studios and networks represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for a new three-year contract covering motion pictures, television, and new media,” said Gabrielle Carteris, the guild’s president, and David White, its national executive director, in a statement released on the guild’s website. “We had hoped to be sharing the good news that we...

SAG-AFTRA finalized its negotiating package this weekend as it gears up to start talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers May 5. The actors’ union is the last of the major Hollywood labor groups to sit down with the AMPTP; the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America having already reached deals. Both negotiations were cordial—at least in public—and concluded with plenty of time before the guilds' respective contracts with the producers expired. SAG-AFTRA's TV/theatrical contracts are set to expire June 30. After its national board meeting wrapped April 13, SAG-AFTRA said it approved a proposal packages for the 2014 Television Animation Agreement, the Basic Cable Live Action agreement and Basic Cable Television Animation agreement. This is the first truly big contract to be worked out by the union since SAG and AFTRA merged two years ago. The announcement comes less than two weeks after the WGA finally reached a deal on a new three-year contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and TV Producers. Today, in meetings in L.A., the SAG-AFTRA National Board unanimously rubber stamped proposals for the upcoming talks based on their mandated wages and working conditions meetings with members. Typical of SAG-AFTRA, the proposals themselves are being kept under lock and key. However, there is little doubt that they include measures about a rise in contributions to the now merged unions still separated Health and Pension plans as well as increases in minimums and...

It looks far more likely that SAG-aftra will have its lead negotiator in place when it starts bargaining with Hollywood's TV and movie producers in the near future. Concerns that the actors union's National Executive Director David White would bolt for a similar post with the National Basketball Players Association have eased, with Monday's announcement that former NBA player and current Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson would head a retooled search to fill the position. That basically re-starts the hiring process — White and corporate attorney Michele Roberts were identified as finalists in February — and the target date to complete the...

Update: SAG-aftra President Slams Union Faction, Praises Ned David White For Upcoming Contract Talks
Update, 7:45Pm: Exclusive: SAG-AFTRA Executive Director David White may be a candidate to head up the NBA players union, but he’s still got a big supporter in the head of the Hollywood union. “Just as it was with their opposition to merger, MembershipFirst remains out of touch with members,” SAG-AFTRA president Ken Howard told me tonight of the faction’s slam of White’s potential new gig. “Executives of David White’s caliber are rare, and informed SAG-AFTRA members are thrilled to have David leading the preparations for our upcoming contract talks,” Howard added. The SAG-AFTRA chief gave no indication of what the union’s plan would be if White got the NBA players union job. However, with SAG-AFTRA still in its mandated wages and working condition consultation with members and likely weeks away from even setting a start date for its talks...

SAG-aftra is streamlining the structure of its top organization, reducing the number of executives who directly report to national executive director David White, and in the process effectively subordinating several former AFTRA executives who previously reported to White. The move continues an evolution of staffing in the almost two years since the two unions merged that has seen a reduction in the influence of legacy AFTRA employees. The moves, which take effect Feb. 17, were announced at Saturday’s meeting of the union’s national board. They include title changes for a number of the organization’s top executives.
