Netflix Celebrating 1974 Cinema With 50th Anniversary Collection Including Horror Movie ‘It’s Alive’
Netflix may be the top streaming service on the planet but they’ve never been great at putting classic movies into the feeds of their subscribers. A quick glance at the streaming service at any given time will mostly assault your eyeballs with new originals and recent hits, with older movies from the 70s, 60s, 50s and earlier being almost completely absent from the service.
That’s why it’s great to hear that Netflix is currently celebrating the cinema of 1974, and it’s the first phase of their Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection initiative.
Netflix explains the project, “Starting this month on Netflix in the US, you can watch a robust roster of movies released in 1974 and turning the big 5-0 this year.”
Additionally, “More offerings from 1984 (turning 40), 1994 (turning 30), and 2004 will follow in April, July, and October, respectively.”

After Mayim Bialik‘s surprising exit as Jeopardy! host in December, it seemed like Ken Jennings would take on the regular syndicated show and the tournaments all on his own. However, that isn’t quite the case. Former champion and Inside Jeopardy! podcast co-host Buzzy Cohen has stepped in to lighten the load, hosting two play-in games for the currently airing Champions Wildcard tournament, which features brief winners from Season 39 plus the recent Second Chance winners. However, in a Jeopardy! first, Cohen’s episodes are audio-only and are available via TuneIn Radio. If you’re wondering why these episodes aren’t included in the televised broadcasts, well, there is a logical reason, as a user on the Jeopardy! Reddit forum explained. “There are more 1- and 2-day champs from Season 39 than there are spaces in the two 27-player [Wildcard] tournament brackets, so they had nine champs play in audio-only play-in games on TuneIn Radio,...

The fourth of four "Futurama" movies, "Into the Wild Green Yonder," came out on DVD in 2009, and it was assumed to be the final word on the series. "Futurama" would eventually return in the ensuing years, but for the moment, it looked like "Green Yonder" was the final appearance of the beloved sci-fi series. As such, the story was appropriately sprawling, involving an evil, unknowable, galaxy-wide force of evil in the universe -- the Dark Ones -- and their attempt to snuff out a mysterious new planet that just appeared out in space. The planet will later be revealed to be the egg of an Encyclopod, an outsize space-faring creature that catalogs and stores the DNA of all species in the galaxy.
At the end of "Yonder," Leo Wong (Billy West) aims to obliterate the violet dwarf star that hosts the Ecyclopod planet, as he wishes to build a galaxy-wide golf course.

"Space Pilot 3000," the first episode of Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's sci-fi sitcom "Futurama," sees the bumbling, directionless Fry (Billy West) delivering a pizza to a cryogenics laboratory on New Year's Eve, 1999. While at the facility, Fry notices that his delivery is for someone named "I.C. Wiener," and he figures he has been pranked. As the world counts down to the year 2000 outside, Fry eats the pizza and cracks open a beer in solitude, toasting another lousy millennium. He then falls backward in a chair and tumbles into an open cryogenics pod. It slams shut and automatically activates. Fry remains frozen for 1,000 years.
Throughout "Futurama," the characters would periodically return to the cryogenics lab where Fry was frozen to find others from Fry's time being freshly resurrected (e.g. Pauly Shore). The cryogenic freeing was a handy way to get 20th-century characters into the year 3000 without...

By the estimation of "Futurama," Christmas will be celebrated very differently in the early 30th century. For one, festive, decorated fir trees will be replaced with palm trees. Also, the spelling of "Christmas" will officially evolve into "Xmas." Most importantly, Xmas will see the release of a real-life robot Santa Claus, built many years ago to gauge the niceness and naughtiness of the world's children and distribute worldwide gifts accordingly. Sadly, Robot Santa's programming had a glitch, and he now gauges everyone to be naughty, a sin punishable by death. Jolly Old St. Nick now takes to the skies on Xmas armed with missiles and bombs, merrily murdering anyone he sees on the streets. Fearful citizens huddle inside shielded beneath anti-Santa armor, a standard feature of most 30th-century buildings.

Dan Levy admitted that he was too “busy” to finish watching The Idol last summer, especially after one of his scenes was cut from the HBO show.
The actor played Benjamin, Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) publicist, in the controversial five-episode series, but his character appeared only in the first episode, and another scene never made it in the final cut of the show.
Now, more than six months after The Idol premiered in June, Levy made an appearance on Tuesday’s episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen and was asked by Cohen on behalf of a fan: “Why were your scenes cut from The Idol, and what did you really think of the show?”
Though the Schitt’s Creek star seemed to be a bit taken aback by the question, he said in response after giving it some thought, “I think it was only one scene that was cut.

Michael Cohen’s Attempt To Revive His Retaliatory Imprisonment Lawsuit Against Trump Denied By Court
A federal appeals court denied Michael Cohen‘s attempt to revive the lawsuit he filed against his former client, ex-President Donald Trump. Cohen claimed that Trump retaliated against him for promoting a tell-all book criticizing the former president.
The former fixer sued Trump, former Attorney General Bill Barr and other official Justice Department members. He claimed they had interfered with his constitutional rights when he had been imprisoned again after making criticisms against the 45th U.S. President.
Cohen was ruled against by a lower court judge who declared that Supreme Court precedent does not give him the right to pursue damages to remedy his claims.
On January 2, the second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with this decision.
Cohen announced that he was planning on appealing the issue to the Supreme Court.

New Year’s Eve broadcasts are usually their best when things start to go wrong, and lucky for us, CNN‘s New Year’s Eve Times Square with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen got delightfully unhinged when John Mayer randomly turned up to say hi from a cat cafe in Tokyo.

Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper were allowed to drink again, but the highlight of CNN’s New Year’s Eve broadcast actually came courtesy of John Mayer, who appeared remotely from Cats in the Box, a cat bar in Tokyo.
Cooper could hardly contain his laughter as Mayer found himself surrounded by cats (and cats’ buttholes). At one point, the Dead & Company member even fed the cats with paste on his finger — all while keeping a straight face.
Mayer is currently amid a lengthy solo tour that runs through early spring (get tickets here). However, during the broadcast Cohen asked whether he has any further plans with Dead & Company (seemingly in reference to a report that the band would reunite for shows at Las Vegas’ Sphere). “I’m not at liberty to say… just yet,” Mayer responded. “But have hope, is what I’ll say.”

Anderson Cooper had an uncontrollable laughing fit during CNN‘s New Year’s Live special on Sunday night (December 31) when multi-time Grammy winner John Mayer called in from an unexpected location. During the annual broadcast, Cooper and his long-time co-host Andy Cohen linked up with Mayer via video call, with Cohen noting that the singer-songwriter is currently on tour performing in Japan. The video then popped up on the screen, showing Mayer at a car bar in Tokyo. The giggling started almost immediately as Cooper saw the parade of cats sauntering on the bar behind Mayer. “John, this doesn’t look sanitary,” Cohen said as a pair of felines licked each other in the background. “You know, I believe it passes all health codes, so I think it’s just fine,” Mayer replied. “But, yes, we are at a cat bar, it’s called Cats in the Box, in Tokyo,...

There were plenty of obstacles to bringing "Futurama" back for season 11, as there always are when a show's been off the air for nearly a decade. First, there was the pay dispute between Hulu and John Dimaggio, and then there was the fact that all the voice actors have (of course) aged 10 years since their last appearance. Although no cast member on "Futurama" has struggled as much as some of the performers on modern "Simpsons," you can still hear the strain on Billy West's characters in particular. Fry's voice is slower and deeper than it used to be, as is Professor Farnsworth's. It's not that bad if you haven't watched any older episodes recently before starting the revival, but the difference is jarring when you finish a new episode and then return to a scene in the pilot.

Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen have picked up their tradition of taking shots on the CNN New Year’s Eve broadcast again!
The longtime best friends maybe drank a little too much a couple of years ago and decided not to drink while ringing in 2023.
However, this year the guys brought back the alcohol consumption and fans are quite pleased about it!

“It’s the top of the hour and we’ve been here for seven years doing this, and for most of those years at the top of the hour we typically have a toast,” Andy said towards the start of the broadcast this year. “I’m hearing from a lot of people…does Daddy get his juice?”
“Can Daddy get his juice responsibly?” Anderson then asked, as Andy brought out a bottle of tequila and a pair of shot glasses.

It’s so hard to get a genuine moment of men being men on television these days. One of the only corners of genuine honesty and surface-level fun on TV was tuning in on New Year’s Eve to see favorite network anchors loosened up and drinking booze alongside viewers waiting for the ball drop in New York City. At least that’s how it was on CNN until last year. Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper, known for getting sloshed during their Nye hosting duties, hosted CNN’s New Year’s Eve broadcast sober last year due to network restrictions on on-air drinking. Special guests, including John Stamos and Amy Sedaris, playfully teased the hosts about their alcohol-free celebration. Meanwhile, Kevin Hart, who was live in Las Vegas, took a shot in solidarity with Cohen and Cooper. This came after a controversial moment during the 2021 broadcast when Cohen referred to...

The future of "Futurama" is secured, thanks to Hulu. The streaming service revived the series for the second time (following in Comedy Central's footsteps), ordering 20 new episodes following the escapades of everyone's favorite intergalactic delivery crew. Ten of those episodes debuted as a revival season (season 11 by broadcast order) earlier in 2023. Following that, the series has been renewed for two additional seasons and there's even been talk of a new "Futurama" movie.
Before getting ahead of yourselves though, there's the back half of the initial 20 episodes that Hulu ordered. This is either season 12 or season 11 part two, depending on if you go by production or broadcast order — we'll stick with the latter for now. No official release date has been given yet, but these ten new episodes are expected to arrive in 2024.

Cheating pays — for Bart and Homer, that is. This Sunday’s episode of “The Simpsons” takes on sports cheating, college admissions scandals (like “Varsity Blues”) and more, as father and son become kings of the blue-collar sports circuit. But in “Do the Wrong Thing,” Marge soon suspects that there’s something dishonest going on.
“It airs this Sunday right after the Cowboys/Dolphins game – a good lead-in and also sort of appropriate since the episode is about cheating and I suspect the NFL game will be won by cheating,” quips episode writer Joel H. Cohen.
Dan Patrick makes a guest voice appearance in the episode, which is timely given the recent University of Michigan football sign-stealing cheating scandal, and other allegations of cheating in smaller contests. In the B-story, Lisa attempts to get into summer camp, and that storyline plays with the headlines about college admissions cheating scandals.

In the snowy hills of Park City this year, North Korea refugee documentary “Beyond Utopia” made a splash. This 115-minute feature keeps its viewers at the edge of their seats. In follows the harrowing defection journeys for the Roh family, which includes two children and an octogenarian, and records the brutal capture and torture of Soyeon Lee's son at the North Korean border.
Throughout the course of the film, the proximity to the subject material is quite jarring. The American film crew witnesses the Roh family and Pastor Kim, their South Korean guardian, through the Yalu River, China, the jungles of Laos, and eventually reaching the Thai shores of the Mekong River.
Now, in light of awards season, we revisit our own close encounter with the team – an in-person interview with producers Sue Mi Terry, Rachel Cohen, and documentary subjects Pastor Kim and Soyeon Lee – at the Larsen office in San Francisco.

Roadside Attractions and Vertical have acquired the U.S. rights to the historical thriller “Firebrand,” which will open in theaters on June 21. Based on the historical novel “Queen’s Gambit” by Elizabeth Fremantle, the film stars Alicia Vikander and Jude Law and is directed by Karim Aïnouz.
“Firebrand” follows “legendary Queen of England, Katherine Parr, and her quest to survive the perilous last months in the life of her ailing and abusive husband, Henry VIII,” per the release. The cast also includes Eddie Marsan, Sam Riley, Simon Russell Beale and Erin Doherty. Gabrielle Tana and Carolyn Marks Blackwood produce the film, which played competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
“I could not be more excited to be bringing ‘Firebrand’ to the screen and telling the story of Katherine Parr — a ferociously brilliant, enlightened, and emancipated woman who I am deeply inspired by — a woman who has been largely disregarded,...

At her Saturday night performance of the Celebration Tour, Madonna spotted Andy Cohen in the audience at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. “If you say one more bad thing about me on your show, you’re gonna get in so much trouble,” Madonna joked from the stage. “You little troublemaking queen!”
Cohen could not have been more thrilled to be called out, mouthing “I love you,” back at the “Vogue” singer. The Watch What Happens Live host later took to Instagram to show the full extent of his delight.

When Jeopardy! returned for its Second Chance and Champions Wildcard tournaments back in September, it came with a new rule, which sees contestants required to read out the entire category name each time they select a new clue. However, this new rule might not stick around much longer, as many viewers have complained that it disrupts the flow of the show, especially when the category names are a mouthful, like last Thursday’s (December 7) “During Lou Gehrig’s Consecutive Game Streak.” Jeopardy‘s long-time producer Sarah Whitcomb Foss and former Tournament of Champions winner Buzzy Cohen addressed the backlash on the latest Inside Jeopardy! podcast, with Foss explaining why they introduced the rule change in the first place. “We’ve seen the chatter online about contestants reading the full category, which is a change to the rules this season,” Cohen brought up, though Foss disagreed with the term “rule.” “Not really a rule,...

In case it needed reiteration, David X. Cohen -- writer on "The Simpsons" and co-creator of "Futurama" -- is a big, big nerd. He has a B.A. in Physics from Harvard and an M.S. in Computer Science from Uc Berkeley. Additionally, he clearly loves jokes about math, science, and technology, and savvy, well-educated viewers of "Futurama" will likely understand at least a handful of the show's many mathematics jokes laid out in plain view. I can think of no other sitcoms, for instance, that feature an extraterrestrial Harlem Globtrotter referring to the 19th-century Polish mathematician Józef Hoene-Wrońskye.
Cohen began his career writing for animated programs back in 1992 when he started penning scripts for Mike Judge's "Beavis and Butt-Head." Yes, it takes a lot of intelligence to write dumb jokes. The following year, Cohen started writing for "The Simpsons" and would eventually work on 14 separate episodes, including five...

Hollywood star Julia Roberts spoke about taking drugs in the past as she confessed the “hardest drug” she has ever tried using. Roberts was speaking on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.
Host Cohen asked: “Julia Roberts, what is the hardest drug you’ve ever tried?”
The star then hesitated as she replied: “Mushrooms.”
Cohen probed further asking if it was a “positive experience.” She then nodded and laughed as she responded: “Yeah, it was nice. Kids, don’t try it at home!”
The Oscar winner didn’t give any further details on when it was she had tried the drug or who she was with at the time – if anyone, reports mirror.co.uk.
‘The Pretty Woman’ star previously had to deny rumours of drug addiction more than 30 years ago when she cancelled her wedding to Kiefer Sutherland just three days before they were due to tie the knot.

Julia Roberts Reveals She Passed on ‘You’ve Got Mail’ But Has No Regrets: “It’s All Kind of Destiny”
Julia Roberts has starred in her fair share of rom-coms throughout her acting career, but she revealed there’s a beloved film that she passed on.
During an appearance on Thursday’s episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, the Leave the World Behind star was asked by a fan if there were any roles she regrets passing on.
“Well, none that I have regrets about because I feel it’s all kind of destiny,” Roberts responded. “But what have I passed on that went on to be great and wonderful, and I thought it maybe wouldn’t have been as great and wonderful with me? You’ve Got Mail.”
Meg Ryan went on to star opposite Tom Hanks in the 1998 flick. But the Oscar-winning actress explained that not getting roles was part of the job, adding that Ryan “was supposed to be in Steel Magnolias, and she was...

Earlier this year, Sony / Screen Gems announced that they would be giving the horror film Horrorscope a theatrical release on June 28, 2024. But in late October, Paramount announced that they were moving A Quiet Place: Day One from its previously announced March 8, 2024 release date to June 28. So it’s no surprise to hear (via Borys Kit) that Screen Gems has decided to shift Horrorscope forward to May 10th. Thanks to A Quiet Place: Day One, we’re going to see Horrorscope a month earlier.

If you believe Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman didn’t win their Oscars for their best performances, well, they agree with you.
On Monday’s “Watch What Happens Live,” the “May December” stars played 1, 2, Agree or Disagree with Andy Cohen, during which the host read statements to see if their answers match. The very first one: “I consider the role for which I won my Oscar to be my best performance to date.” Both women flashed the “disagree” sign. Portman, of course, won Best Actress for “Black Swan” (2010) and Moore won the same prize for “Still Alice” (2014).
After the game, Cohen did Film Twitter a solid and asked the important follow-up: What performance do they each feel is their best? “It’s very embarrassing to say that about yourself,” Portman nervously demurred before Cohen said he didn’t think so. “Um, Ok. I felt like ‘Jackie’ was a big one for me.

George Santos has had some doors open, and other doors close following his expulsion from Congress following a scathing report from the House Ethics Committee that concluded he used campaign funds to afford personal luxuries.
On Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver pled to Andy Cohen to cast Santos on The Real Housewives franchise on Bravo. A day after the HBO show aired, Cohen fired back and didn’t seem keen on giving Santos a role on the cable network.
“Let me be clear. We don’t want him,” Cohen said on his SiriusXM show. “Anyone who has had those traits [of a criminal and a liar] are people that were cast and then it’s like, wait a minute, this guy… everything’s not what it seemed. Kind of like what happened with the people of New York State.”

Bender Bending Rodrigeuz (John Dimaggio) is the most irreverent "Futurama" character by far, which makes the 2002 episode "Godfellas" such a compelling character piece.
At the episode's beginning, Bender is taking a nap in the Planet Express Ship's torpedo tube; during a battle with Space Pirates, he's shot into the void at light speed. Drifting through the cosmos alone, he's eventually hit by an asteroid home to diminutive "Shrimpkins." The aliens settle on his body and worship him as a god — he tries both an interventionist and abstaining approach to helping his subjects, but neither works. Soon, the faithful and atheistic Shrimpkins wipe each other out in a nuclear war.
Bender, alone again, comes across an omnipotent spiral nebula that communicates in binary code — Bender speculates this eternal entity may be God himself. They exchange notes on Godhood ("You [Bender] were doing well until everyone died") before "God" sends Bender back to...

John Oliver celebrated the expulsion of George Santos from Congress this week and suggested he was better suited for Bravo.
On the latest episode of HBO’s Last Week Tonight, Oliver was giddy that “they finally kicked George Santos out” of the House of Representatives.
“I say finally because it was their third attempt at doing that,” Oliver joked. “Apparently it takes three times to get rid of him — a sort of reverse Beetlejuice situation, if you will.”
Oliver says that what pushed Congress to kick Santos out of his position finally was due to the “scathing” ethics committee report that concluded the former U.S. representative used campaign funds to pay for luxuries.
“The truth is, this man never belonged in Congress, he belongs on Bravo,” Oliver later said.

In the "Futurama" episode "The Prisoner of Benda," Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) invents a body-swapping device that trades the consciousnesses of two users. He, being a very, very old man, would like to occupy the youthful, more active body of his employee, Amy Wong (Lauren Tom). Amy, meanwhile, longs to overeat as she once did as a child, and the Professor's bony body would allow her to indulge in her appetite. They swap bodies, but only after doing so realize that the machine doesn't allow them to swap back. A third body would allow Amy to return to her body, but then the Professor and the third party would be swapped. It was all very complicated.
Eventually, Fry (West) and Leela (Katey Sagal) are having romantic dates in the bodies of Dr. Zoidberg (West) and the Professor, and the Professor is performing in an Eastern European circus in Bender's body.

Once per season, the makers of "Futurama" like to tinker with their formula by presenting speculative anthology-style episodes wherein they can tell stories that are even wilder than usual. The second edition of this format was entitled "Anthology of Interest II" and aired on January 6, 2002. The wraparound device for "Interest II" was that the Professor (Billy West) invented a TV-like device called the What-If Machine which could present short videos of whatever speculative question one thought to ask it.
Fry (West), being something of a shiftless layabout, announces that he's only ever been proficient at old-school video games, and asks the What-If Machine what life would be like were it to adhere to the rules of said video games. He and the rest of the "Futurama" characters find themselves in a world where diplomatic talks between Earth and the planet Nindenduu 64 have broken down, causing Donkey Kong to throw a...

“Jury Duty” is a reality show. Or is it a sitcom? A documentary? An elaborate prank?
How about all of the above?
One of 2023’s defining breakouts, the Amazon Freevee series is the crown jewel of an ascendant hybrid genre sometimes referred to as docu-comedy. Even the people who made the show aren’t sure how to classify it. Director Jake Syzmanski and co-creator Lee Eisenberg say they’ve never heard that term. Eisenberg suggested hidden-camera comedy, but that’s not really accurate either, as everyone involved knew they were being filmed. Robyn Adams, a producer, used “outlined improv.” Whatever nomenclature best applies, this increasingly common format has enjoyed a banner year, with “Jury Duty,” Peacock’s “Paul T. Goldman,” BBC and Netflix’s “Cunk on Earth,” and HBO’s “How To with John Wilson” picking up where the likes of Sacha Baron Cohen and Nathan Fielder left off.

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the year’s most talked-about scripts continues with Rustin, Netflix’s biopic of civil rights icon Bayard Rustin. Colman Domingo stars in the film, which is directed by Tony winner George C. Wolfe and hit theaters and the streamer in November after its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
The screenplay co-written by Julian Breece and Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black focuses on one of the main architects of the 1963 March on Washington, where more than 200,000 hear Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech on the National Mall. Rustin was a fulcrum in the civil rights movement, working alongside the likes of King, Adam Clayton Powell Jr and Ella Baker, though as an openly gay man in that era he often had to work behind the scenes. He challenged authority and never apologized for who he was or what he believed.
