After Harrison Ford’s high praise for his 1923 creator Taylor Sheridan, another star from the series explains why Sheridan is a unique creator in all senses. Brandon Sklenar called the Yellowstone spinoff a once-in-a-lifetime experience and shared that no grand-scale film could match up to Sheridan’s series. Sklenar plays Spencer Dutton, the nephew of Ford’s character Jacob Dutton and the son of James Dutton, played by Tim McGraw in 1883.

Although Taylor Sheridan now commands the television industry as a one-man army, who reinvented himself as a screenwriter and director, he initially began his career as an actor. Appearing in television series like Sons of Anarchy, Sheridan gradually transitioned to screenwriting and penned critically acclaimed hits like Sicario, Wind River, and more.

Now, Taylor Sheridan is famously known as the mastermind behind the Yellowstone franchise. Redefining the neo-Western genre through his successful series, Sheridan later launched two spin-off prequels 1883 and 1923. But among his many achievements, the one that significantly stands out is his almost record-breaking moment of combining the star powers of Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford in his iconic franchise.

It appears that Harrison Ford built his career upon roles that were passed on by other famous actors. Be it his breakout role as Han Solo or his adventurous hero role in Indiana Jones, Ford was not the first choice for these roles. Interestingly, he was also not the first choice for another action role that the audiences loved him for. Ford’s role as President Marshall in Air Force One was initially offered to Kevin Costner.

Costner asked the producers to specifically give the role to the Star Wars actor when he dropped out due to his other commitments. Ford and Costner weren’t exactly best friends which made the Yellowstone actor’s move a very generous one.

After the incredible success of Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan roped in Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford for the prequel series 1923. It follows the story of the Dutton family in 1923, where Mirren played Cara Dutton and Ford played her husband Jacob Dutton. Mirren is not an actress to walk into a television show without reading a script. On top of that, she hated most of the “normal” Western films. However, she signed on to the Yellowstone spin-off without a script.

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe continues to grow and evolve with more and more spin-offs on the way. Despite the end of Kevin Costner’s journey in the Western world with season 5, Sheridan seems to have no plans to end the universe with John Dutton. And Harrison Ford’s 1923 is one of the many spin-offs existing and said to be in the works.
Kevin Costner as John Dutton in Yellowstone
Starring in the prequel series, and playing the great great grand uncle of John Dutton, Ford does an impeccable job as always. Playing a character related to Costner’s Dutton, any other actor would have thought to reach out to Costner, especially given the rumored feud between Sheridan and the Yellowstone star. Yet, Ford had other plans.

Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western drama series Yellowstone was quite well-received by both fans and critics, especially after the first season. Its success paved the way for a slew of spin-offs. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the show revolves around the Duttons family who must protect their property from outsiders all while dealing with internal conflict.

Yellowstone’s first spinoff was a prequel series, 1883, starring Sam Elliot, Tim McGraw, and more. Following suit, “1923” emerged as another prequel, boasting an enviable lineup led by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. When it came to coming back for a second season, Harrison Ford couldn’t be more excited. However, his enthusiasm was met with a stark comment from Taylor Sheridan.

Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation" is his masterpiece in between masterpieces. The legendary filmmaker wrapped principal photography in late February 1973, just one month before he would win the Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscars for "The Godfather" (Albert Ruddy took home the Best Picture Oscar as the mafia classic's producer). Had Paramount released the film that year, it almost certainly would've received nominations for Best Picture and Director (over the wholly forgotten "A Touch of Class"), giving Coppola three consecutive nods in the latter category, a feat only accomplished once in Academy Awards history (by William Wyler). Instead, he wound up competing against himself a year later, when he added three more Oscars to his trophy case with "The Godfather Part II."
While "The Godfather" movies placed him atop Hollywood's director A-list for the rest of the decade, some cinephiles believe "The Conversation" is the superior film. The...

Following the success of chaotic cowboy drama Yellowstone, co-creator Taylor Sheridan has been given an entire book of blank checks, and has cashed as many as he could manage in just five years. While his involvement in these TV projects wavers, sometimes drastically, his brand has always been on point.
With over half a dozen shows now within the House of Sheridan, let’s take a look at how each program measures up against the rest of the catalog.
7. Lawmen: Bass Reeves
The story of real life American folk legend Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo) was originally supposed to be a larger cog in the Yellowstone prequel machine, but as it continued to evolve, it became its own standalone project, which works both for and against the show. Part of the charm of the Yellowstone prequels for any Sheridan fan is getting to search for connections between the different generations of the Dutton family.

Taylor Sheridan’s 1923 and Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty made a welcome showing at the Golden Globe nominations Monday, while the final season of Succession on HBO earned a deserved yet predictable round of nominations.
The Yellowstone prequel — the second created by Sheridan after 1883 — earned nominations in the Best Drama category and the Actress category, with Helen Mirren earning a nod for playing the Dutton matriarch. Other memorable performances in the prequel were overlooked, like Harrison Ford’s turn as Jacob Dutton and the phenomenal Aminah Nieves as Teonna Rainwater, but it was a win for Paramount+ to see one of Sheridan’s joints get some early recognition.
Speaking of which, David Oyelowo earned a nomination for his leading role in Lawmen: Bass Reeves – Sheridan’s new anthology that only dropped last month on Paramount+. He’s competing in the Actor/Limited Series category alongside Matt Bomer (Fellow Travelers), Woody Harrelson...

[This story contains spoilers from 1883, 1923 and Yellowstone season five.]
With each new series in the megahit Yellowstone franchise, a new generation of Duttons emerges. After launching in 2018 with Kevin Costner’s central patriarch John Dutton and his immediate family, creator Taylor Sheridan traveled back in time to expand the franchise and introduce elder generations of Duttons, first with the single season of 1883 and now with the series 1923, which has been renewed for a second season.
The Dutton family tree has branched out as Yellowstone has been airing, with the flagship series currently at the halfway point in its fifth and final run. First, viewers followed James (Tim McGraw) and Margaret Dutton (Faith Hill) on their family’s treacherous journey west through the Great Plains in 1883, a trek that would ultimately lead to what becomes the Yellowstone ranch of the flagship series. And later, 1923 would introduce the audience to Jacob (Harrison Ford) and Cara Dutton (Helen Mirren), the Duttons who...

1923: Has It Been Renewed for Season 2?
Unlike 1883, which was designed as one season to tell a complete story, 1923 is getting a second season.
As the writing process was underway, Taylor Sheridan realized he needed more time to wrap up the storylines, which means we're getting a second season.
It will probably be the final season because the superproducer has been vocal about not wanting to keep the shows on the air beyond their initial storylines.

Prolific creator Taylor Sheridan has a ton of projects out, and more on the way. He's responsible for the juggernaut Paramount series "Yellowstone," as well as its spin-off/prequels "1883" and "1923," plus "Lawmen: Bass Reeves" coming soon. Outside of that franchise, he's got "Mayor of Kingstown," "Tulsa King," and "Special Ops: Lioness." He's able to make a phone call to Harrison Ford (Jacob Dutton) and Helen Mirren (Cara Dutton) to cast them in "1923," and can pull names like Nicole Kidman and Sylvester Stallone. It feels like his shows are responsible for most of Paramount+'s original library, and while that may not be completely true, it's not far off.
When "1883" was in development, Sheridan got a call that Paramount had a new streaming service on the way, and since "Yellowstone" was streaming over at Peacock due to a previous deal, the studio wanted "1883" for its own new service,...

Helen Mirren made a welcome return to TV with her stunning Western series “1923” opposite the inimitable Harrison Ford. The series is another show from Taylor Sheridan‘s Western world, which started off with Kevin Costner‘s “Yellowstone” and also includes the prequel “1883.”
This one is set in between those two shows and follows Mirren and Ford as married couple Cara and Jacob Dutton, who lead their family through a variety of challenges in the early 20th century, including the prohibition era and the Great Depression. As Cara, Mirren owns the screen with her Dame-like presence and commands your attention in every scene she’s in. She’s introduced with a shotgun but doesn’t need such props to show what a powerful actress she is. She’s a force to be reckoned with, as usual, as critics have noted.

Harrison Ford is gearing up for a stellar year with not one but two major TV shows as well as the latest installment of his iconic “Indiana Jones” franchise. On the TV front, Ford features in the Apple TV+ comedy “Shrinking” and does what he does best in the Paramount+ drama series “1923:” gruff masculinity with a gun and a hat. But his role is so much more than that.
“1923” is the third show in Taylor Sheridan‘s Western trilogy. It serves as a prequel to the Kevin Costner‘s “Yellowstone” and as a sequel to Sam Elliott‘s “1883.” The story follows the Dutton family in the titular year, 1923, and focuses on their hardships during the Prohibition era. Ford stars as the patriarch of the Dutton family, Jacob Dutton. Jacob is the elder brother of James, who is played by Tim McGraw in “1883.” Ford acts as one part of...

If you’re a fan of “Yellowstone,” you know that the show and its spin-off prequel series are filled with beautiful landscapes, seriously dramatic events and scene-stealing characters that you love to hate or hate to love. But what you may not know is all the ins and outs of every character’s past and their lineage, especially the Dutton family. There have been sons, adopted sons, daughters, aunts and uncles taking care of nephews, friends, enemies, legacy-altering events, and we still don’t officially know who John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) grandfather is!
And with the end of “Yellowstone” Season 5 coming later this year — which will also mark the end of the series — now is the perfect time to get the “Yellowstone” timeline all straightened out, especially because the franchise-expanding spin-offs are just getting started.

When legendary Western hatter John B. Stetson invented the first commercially manufactured cowboy hat in 1865, he probably didn’t expect it would become a major fashion accessory more than a century and a half later. And yet around the world today, cowboy hats are worn by more people than ever before, and much of the credit for their newfound popularity goes to the costume designers of “Yellowstone” and “1923,” and to the shows’ creator, Taylor Sheridan.
Award-winning costume designer Janie Bryant created the costumes for the “Yellowstone” prequels “1923” and “1883,” and she believes the timeless appeal of cowboy hats is due, in large part, to their symbolic associations. “I think it really is about the American spirit,” she says. “There’s a wildness, a pioneering spirit, and a sense of freedom that we identify with the cowboy hat. It’s iconically American, and I think people relate with it globally.”

The latest series in Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” franchise, “1923,” tells the story of a world in transition. The rural, classically Western values of “1883” are colliding with the modern technology of washing machines and automobiles, and the scope of the mythology has expanded beyond American borders to follow characters all over the world. That meant big challenges and exciting opportunities for costume designer Janie Bryant, who was tasked with creating wardrobe for hundreds of speaking roles and stunt players as well as thousands of extras. “We shot the show on three continents and I had four costume teams: one in L.A., one in Montana, one in South Africa, and one in Malta,” Bryant told IndieWire. “You have to take it a few days at a time, or a week at a time. You can’t think of the whole all at once because it’s too overwhelming.”

When Steven Spielberg was shooting "Raiders of the Lost Ark," he was amazed Harrison Ford's stunt team survived. The first Indiana Jones movie remains a charming action adventure classic, but it took some dedicated stunt performers to pull off the hardcore action set pieces throughout, including star Harrison Ford. The leading man basically did all the stunts that didn't involve risking actual death, which meant he was thrust into the action when the worst that could happen was, y'know, a life-changing injury, horrible maiming, or perhaps the loss of a limb.
Case in point: The famous giant boulder chase scene, which involved Ford running in front of a 12-foot, 300-pound boulder made of fiberglass, wood, and plaster. Shooting this sequence required Ford to race the makeshift rock ten times, prompting Spielberg to remark years later, "He was lucky — and I was an idiot for letting him try it."

She’s one of the world’s most famous actresses, and her role as Cara Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone spin-off 1923 only solidifies Helen Mirren’s reputation. From theater to the big screen to primetime, Mirren is a skilled actress. Helen Mirren’s numerous accolades prove that her career in the entertainment industry was well-earned. The success of Yellowstone and the fact that Harrison Ford signed on to play Jacob Dutton is what made Helen Mirren agree to play Cara Dutton in the 1923 franchise. For the first time in the history of her storied career, Mirren signed on for a role without...

My grandfather loved television westerns. I mean, he watched every single one, and there were a lot to choose from in the early days of the medium. Throughout the 1950s and most of the 1960s, westerns dominated the television landscape. However, despite being such a uniquely American genre, westerns on television have been conspicuously under-rewarded by the Emmys, with the most recent Best Drama Series win for a western occurring more than 60 years ago. Could “1923” change all of that?
“1923” is the latest addition to the “Yellowstone” TV franchise. Created and written by Taylor Sheridan, this second prequel to the popular Paramount series focuses on the Dutton family and the Yellowstone Ranch in the early 20th century. The show stars Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and Oscar, Emmy and Tony winner Helen Mirren as his wife Kara. Together they fight to keep their beloved ranch out of the hands of encroachers...

With the "Yellowstone" prequel series "1923" set to return for season 2 on Paramount+, fans of the love affair between Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) and Alexandra Dutton (Julia Schlaepfer) have plenty to look forward to as the couple continues their arduous journey from Africa to Montana. The meet-cute of a British aristocrat and a lion hunter early on in the first season gave audiences faith that there really is a such thing as love at first sight. Alexandra sacrifices her posh life and status to run away with Spencer, and their rushed romance feels like something out of a turn-of-the-century adventure serial. As they both overcome incredible odds to get back to the Dutton family ranch and restore order, their bond only grows stronger. It's an intoxicating onscreen love affair that manages to stay buoyant even when the couple find themselves steeped in melodrama.

Harrison Ford is trying new things of late, and we're all for it. After decades of sticking exclusively to movies, barring that cameo he did for "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" in the '90s, the veteran star has finally waded into the streaming waters and fully immersed himself. His role as rancher Jacob Dutton on Paramount's "Yellowstone" spin-off "1923" has seen him at his gruffest and most resolute, as his character faces the harsh realities of life in rural Montana.
But perhaps the most charmingly surprising role he's taken on is that of Dr. Paul Rhodes in Apple TV+'s "Shrinking," wherein he displays a refreshing comedic sensibility that even surprised his co-star, Jason Segel. And if you ask the 80-year-old, surprising people, including himself, is exactly how he wants to spend his twilight years. The actor spoke to The Hollywood Reporter following his foray into TV, explaining that...

The Paramount+ series 1923 is the latest installment in the Yellowstone franchise. Debuting on the Paramount Network in 2018, Yellowstone has gone from a beloved Western drama to a pop culture phenomenon. Following its successful 2022 launch, the network renewed 1923 for season 2 soon thereafter. And star Brandon Sklenar, for one, is excited to see how his character will evolve.
Brandon Sklenar revealed the truth behind his ‘1923’ audition
On 1923, Sklenar plays Spencer Dutton, youngest son of 1883 leads James and Margaret Dutton (Tim McGraw and Faith Hill). This sequel series sees Spencer raised by James’ older brother Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren). But despite the talent involved in 1923 – the show was created by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Taylor Sheridan (Hell or High Water) – Sklenar admitted his audition process for the show was surprisingly easy.
“[It was] the smoothest [audition] I’ve ever experienced,” Sklenar told Esquire. “I was backpacking in Oregon and Washington for three weeks.

Dame Helen Mirren is no stranger to the Emmy podium. The Oscar and Tony-winning actress has earned five Emmy statues from 12 nominations over the course of her nearly fifty-year career in television. Despite that impressive track record the actress has never earned an Emmy nomination for a performance on a series. That should change this year thanks to her commanding performance as the Dutton family matriarch in the Paramount+ hit “1923.”
In this second prequel series to Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone,” Mirren stars as Cara Dutton, wife of family patriarch Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford). Over the course of the show’s first season, Cara is forced to take charge of the family after Jacob is nearly killed by a rival rancher, leaving the ranch vulnerable to all manner of encroachers.

Taylor Sheridan’s “1923” just wrapped up its first season on Paramount+ and it was a doozy.
Not only did the feud between Harrison Ford’s Jacob Dutton and Timothy Dalton’s Donald Whitfield reach a boiling point (which is really something considering everything that’s already come before) but the seemingly never-ending journey of Brand Sklenar’s Spencer Dutton and Julia Schlaepfer’s Alexandra to return to the ranch hit a major setback when they run into Alexandra’s ex-fiancé and he challenges Spencer to a duel.
TheWrap spoke to Sklenar about what it was like filming the finale, including a supernatural encounter with a ghost while on the Queen Mary, whether he knows where his character is headed (hopefully towards some scenes with Harrison Ford) and, of course, we get into the issue of John Dutton’s true lineage. (The finale did offer some helpful clues.)

Indiana Jones will soon return in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," another globe-trotting entry in the Indy saga that everyone's not really sure about because of a certain Crystal Skull of Akator. Still, franchise star Harrison Ford isn't worried, and has no hard feelings about "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." In fact, he's having a great time of late, forging a new prestige TV career by starring in the Apple TV+ series "Shrinking" alongside Paramount's popular "1923."
Some 40 odd years after Indiana Jones' 1981 debut, 80-year-old Ford can be found weathering blizzards on horseback and spending 10-hour days in the bitter Montana climate for his Paramount show. As Jacob Dutton, the Hollywood vet has shown a startling willingness to take on the physical demands of playing a rancher spending his twilight years protecting his family. But then, he's always preferred to perform as much of the on-screen action as he can.

Spoiler Alert! This story contains plot points from the finale of 1923 on Paramount+.
The first season of 1923 ended Sunday with not one but three rather dismal developments: Spencer Dutton (Brendan Sklenar) and his wife Alex (Julia Schlaepfer) were torn apart at sea, Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) told Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) that he pretty much owns him after having paid the property taxes on Yellowstone, and Elizabeth Dutton (Michelle Randolph) lost the first baby she conceived with her new husband Jack (Darren Mann). Leave it to creator Taylor Sheridan to keep things challenging and sad as hell in his Yellowstone-verse!
Here, actress Randolph — a relative newcomer whose credits include The Resort and The Undertaker’s Wife — talks about shooting that heartbreaking scene with Mann. She also reveals who she likes spending time with now that production has wrapped and what fans always want to talk about if they ever meet her on the street.

Time travel drama Outlander returns for a seventh go-around this summer. The series is currently in filming and post-production, with massive anticipation for the extended season after a truncated season 6. The show attracts a particularly dedicated fandom, but it’s a different prestige drama that holds the attention of the actors working on the show.

Julia Schlaepfer plays Alexandra in 1923. Her character is a beautiful British woman from a powerful and wealthy family. Alex leaves all that behind to run away with Spencer Dutton, but she, of course, still has a refined way of speaking. Her accent is very different than the way a modern Brit would speak, and Schlaepfer spent quite a bit of time perfecting it.

Harrison Ford may have just made the jump to TV, but the legendary actor has already said he’s on board for 1923 season 2. Taylor Sheridan’s “Yellowstone” might be in hibernation but that doesn’t mean that you are totally deprived of Dutton-related drama, as prequel series “1923” is currently streaming. It’s full of all the things that make “Yellowstone” so special – frontier justice, cowboys, big movie stars and a surprising amount of pistol whipping.
“1923” picks up after the events of “1883.” Harrison Ford plays Jacob Dutton, the brother of James Dutton (Tim McGraw’s character on “1883”). After James and Margaret (Faith Hill) passed away, Jacob and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) take the boys in. Jack Dutton (Darren Mann) is the dedicated cowboy and ranchman while Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), having Ptsd from World War I, retreats to Africa to hunt big game. In a very real way we are seeing the beginnings of the Yellowstone ranch, not just in the buildings but in the craggy philosophy and the psychic trauma that seems to permeate the soil.

Harrison Ford is far from the first major star that Taylor Sheridan has landed for his shows, like 1923. The famous writer and filmmaker has worked with the likes of Kevin Costner and Sylvester Stallone over the years. In Sheridan’s Yellowstone prequel, 1923, Ford plays Jacob, the patriarch of the Dutton family. Jacob tries to keep his ranch alive in a modernizing world. Sheridan writes about real-life issues, and reading his scripts struck and chord with the actor

“Progress goes hand in hand with an exploration of the Mother Earth,” Banner Creighton actor Jerome Flynn stated in a video from Paramount+.

The Paramount+ series "1923" brought us another chapter of the story that creator Taylor Sheridan began with "Yellowstone." Last year we got a single-season prequel series, "1883," which gave us some backstory on the Dutton family who run the Yellowstone Ranch. In "1923," Harrison Ford plays Jacob Dutton, the brother of James Dutton (Tim McGraw), who we met in "1883." James and his wife have passed, and Jacob and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) are running things now with the help of the remains of James' family. They're battling a range war with sheep herders, the Depression, which hit Montana far earlier than the rest of the United States, the end of Prohibition, and bad conditions for their cattle.

Harrison Ford, who just turned 80 years old this year, is always keeping himself busy. After stepping right back into one of his most iconic characters over the course of 20 months in the middle of the pandemic, he wrapped on "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" only to go straight into filming on Apple TV+'s limited comedy series "Shrinking." Finally, starring opposite Helen Mirin, Ford went to the cold Montana mountains to play the patriarch of the Dutton family in the "Yellowstone" spin-off "1923."

The Yellowstone universe just expanded once again, with the recent release of the all-new prequel series, 1923. Available to stream on Paramount+, the series features a truly star-studded cast of actors, including Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren.
Yellowstone fans both young and old have enjoyed the superstars’ take on the Dutton family universe. For Mirren, the project was a chance to refine some new skills – including driving a buggy, a task at which she proved to be surprisingly adept.

The Taylor Sheridan series "1923" was just renewed by Paramount+ for a second season, bringing us the further adventures of the Dutton family. We began following their journey in "Yellowstone," which is set in the present day, then got the prequel series "1883." In "1923" we meet Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford), the brother of James Dutton (Tim McGraw) from "1883" who has since passed. Jacob and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) are running the Yellowstone ranch in his place. They are battling it out with sheepherders who have enlisted mining tycoon Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton) to try to take the land from the Duttons.
The series shoots in Montana, which is not the easiest environment to work in. Sheridan famously puts his actors through cowboy camp training, and there is a lot of physical work from riding to fight scenes. Not only that, but the weather is pretty brutal. It's something Dalton...

In news that probably surprises no one, a show starring two of the biggest-name stars in Hollywood that was created by one of television's most prolific producers has just been renewed. Yep, "1923" will be back for a second season according to The Hollywood Reporter, bringing Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren back for more ranch-set drama.
The news here is a no-brainer given both the draw of Mirren and Ford (the latter of which had never had a main role on TV before this) as well as series creator Taylor Sheridan's pull in the industry. At this point, Sheridan has a catalog of five Paramount shows recently or currently on air and several more in the works. The flagship series "Yellowstone," now in its fifth season, spun off into both "1883" and "1923."
According to THR, "1923" scored the highest-rated series premiere on cable last year, as the show...
