"Cowboys & Aliens" may be lassoing its way into theaters on Friday (July 29), but the movie's journey to the big screen began a long time ago in a galaxy ... well, not so far away.
The current incarnation of Jon Favreau's adaptation of Scott Mitchell Rosenberg's 2006 graphic novel is a far cry from what the director had originally envisioned. When we first heard about the project back in '08, it seemed to be shaping up to be "Iron Man 2.0," with Favreau directing, "Iron Man" screenwriters penning the script and Robert Downey Jr. pegged as the flick's leading man.
"Cowboys & Aliens" was initially set to begin filming in 2009, but with Downey Jr. unsure about committing to the role and Favreau still not officially onboard,...

A screenshot of next summer's big and goofy Cowboys and Aliens has been released.
In it, Daniel Craig prepares to fire some sort of alien doodad that looks like the pistol version of the weapon in Laserblast. No word on whether Craig's character also has to wear a special hippy necklace to activate the weapon, or if he's getting revenge on the bigger kids in town for all of their mean bullying. Both images are embedded below, for contrast and comparison!
Cowboys and Aliens is planned to arrive in summer theaters in July of 2011. Iron Man director Jon Favreau is behind the film, and the cast includes a host of other well known names such as Sam Rockwell, Harrison Ford, Noah Ringer, Olivia Wilde, and of course Daniel Craig. Hollywood has a lot of power behind this film, and there is no doubt it is hoped to be one of...

One big panel that totally blew everyone away, us included, this year at Comic-Con 2010 was Universal's panel for Cowboys & Aliens, the new Jon Favreau movie that's being shot as we speak. Although they've only been shooting for about four weeks, Favreau made an appearance and brought the entire cast in, and I mean the entire cast: Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell and Adam Beach. And yes, even Harrison Ford made his first ever Comic-Con appearance (we talk more about it in the video below) and as you can tell by my tweets, even I was excited to see him. But of course, we got to see some footage, so how was it? That photo above of Daniel Craig as Zeke Johnson is also our very first look at anything from the movie, but those lucky enough to also be at Comic-Con in Hall H yesterday we treated to ...

DreamWorks has released the first official photo from Cowboys and Aliens, starring Daniel Craig as cowboy Zeke Johnson.
Blockbuster filmmaker Jon Favreau directs Craig and Harrison Ford in an event film for summer 2011 that crosses the classic Western with the alien-invasion movie in a blazingly original way: Cowboys and Aliens. Joined by an arsenal of top moviemakers—Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci—he brings an all-new action thriller that will take audiences into the Old West, where a lone cowboy leads an uprising against a terror from beyond our world.
Cowboys and Aliens synopsis: 1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger (Craig) with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a...

Leave it up to Jon Favreau to be shooting for only four weeks and to show up at Comic Con with as much footage as he did. After introducing the cast of Cowboys & Aliens -- including Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell and Harrison Ford (who was brought out in handkuffs, mocking a scenario that had just taken place inside Hall H where someone was arrested for stabbing a fellow con-goer in the face) -- Favreau told the crowd that he wanted to do a straight up John Ford-esque Western with old school sci-fi elements reminscent of films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He also insitigated a monstrous cheer from the crowd when he announced the film wouldn't be in 3D. A sign of what's to come? Perhaps.
The footage looked great, beginning with about three straight-up Western scenes setting up Daniel Craig as a stranger who...

Those lucky enough to attend Comic-Con were treated to around 8 minutes of footage from Jon Favreau’s Cowboys and Aliens, however for the rest of us the first official image of Daniel Craig as cowboy Zeke Johnson will have to do instead. Sam Rockwell will reteam with his "Iron Man 2" director, Jon Favreau later this summer on "Cowboys & Aliens."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rockwell has signed on to portray a bar owner named Doc who joins the fight against the aliens in the old west. The role was reportedly rewritten and expanded for Rockwell by "Cowboys & Aliens" screenwriters, Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof.
Rockwell's "Iron Man 2" co-star Robert Downey Jr. had previously been attached to play the lead character, Zeke Johnson — a gunslinger who helps unite a tribe of Apache warriors and his fellow settlers against the alien invasion — before the role ultimately went to Daniel Craig ("Casino Royale").
Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford and Noah Ringer round out the major cast members announced to date.

It has been written about over the past few days but we decided to wait until its official to post it on the site but it seems that Harrison Ford will join Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde in Cowboys vs. Aliens. The director confirmed that the news was true via his Twitter account today saying:
“Please stop asking if Harrison Ford is in Cowboys and Aliens. Okay? He is. Please don’t tell anybody.”
It isn’t clear as of yet which role Ford is taking but /Film speculated it is the mayor, owner of the town, however they mentioned the script may have built a new character for the movie that he could play. Time will tell I guess. The script for the movie was written by screenwriter heavy weights Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and revolves around aliens attacking 19th century Arizona which forces traditional enemies...

This week we were blessed with some fantastic news about the Spider-Man 4 movie: it’s not going to happen. This means we don’t have to watch Kirsten Dunst play an unsexy version of herself or see Toby MacGuire prance around with bangs while pointing at people. Sony is rebooting the franchise starting immediately because if they let the project go stagnate they lose their rights back to Disney/Marvel. No word on who will play the new Peter Parker, but Deadline Hollywood is reporting that the new director for the fledgling Spidey franchise will be (500) Days of Summer director Marc Webb. Webb has met with Sony producers and executives to get production rolling by this summer for a 2012 release.
Another exciting bit of news this week is that Lionsgate is the top bidder for rights to the Terminator franchise. The Halcyon Group is selling the rights to...

Not even two full days have elapsed since Robert Downey Jr. officially departed "Cowboys & Aliens," but the "Iron Man 2" actor might already have a replacement in the form of James Bond.
According to Variety, Daniel Craig is currently in negotiations with DreamWorks and director Jon Favreau to fill Downey's stirruped boots in "Cowboys & Aliens," the upcoming film based on the Platinum Studios graphic novel series.
Craig would play protagonist Zeke Johnson, a Western hero that must unite a group of Apache Indians and his fellow gunslingers alike against the common threat of alien invasion.
While Craig's involvement is still not fully confirmed, it appears that Downey's departure is. The actor had an on-again off-again relationship with "Cowboys & Aliens," having once told MTV News that his participation in the project was far from a certainty. If Downey had found time to film the movie, it would have marked his third collaboration with Favreau.

Busy Favreau has also adapted the story for the big screen and he'll also appear in the film.

Earlier this week we got news that Robert Downey Jr. had dropped out of Jon Favreau’s Cowboys and Aliens because he has too many franchises on the go as it is, and apparently Sherlock Holmes 2 may be gearing up. Monday we learned that Robert Downey Jr. was dropping out of Jon Favreau.s Iron Man 2 followup, a movie called Cowboys and Aliens. That leaves Favreau in search of a new star and Collider thinks they.ll know who he.ll hire to herd E.T. They claim it could be Daniel Craig. Their source says he.s in negotiations for Rdj.s old role, the part of Zeke Johnson. Can Daniel Craig do a cowpoke accent? Or will this be Zeke Johnson by way of James Bond? The film is supposed to be based on a comic (pictured below) about a group of Apache Indians and Arizona settlers forced to band together when an alien spaceship crash lands in their city, but adding James Bond into the mix can only make this idea even better. James Bond and Cowboys and Aliens and Indians? I am so in.
