Exclusive: Ken Jeong (Crazy Rich Asians) and Lochlyn Munro (Riverdale) have signed on to star alongside Zhang Jingchu, Michelle Krusiec and more in Impossible Dream Entertainment’s comedy Tiger Mom, which has entered production in Vancouver.
Zhang leads the U.S. & China co-produced film as Marilyn Khu, a first-generation Chinese-American mother who, unable to control her teenage children, enrolls them in a prestigious disciplinary school called Tiger Academy — run by the no-nonsense Suki Lai (Krusiec) —which is capable of whipping them into Ivy League shape. While Jeong will play Jimmy Khu, a work obsessed husband and father whose parenting style is decidedly out of touch, details as to Munro’s role haven’t been disclosed. Additional cast members set include Alexa Loo (Chad), William Budijanto (Resident Alien), Chloe Pun (Kung Fu), Neil Garguilo (Bloodsucking Bastards) and Nathalie Boltt (District 9).

Since breaking out of the gate with a modern Sci-Fi masterwork in 2009 with District 9, writer/director Neill Blomkamp has seemingly struggled to hit that same initial almighty high. Yet, in spite of some widely different readings, he remains a filmmaker with incredible vision and ambition.
From the social class gap depictions of Elysium, to the AI implications of Chappie, Blomkamp’s work always can be relied upon to ponder weighty and interesting themes within a grand aesthetic. However his latest lockdown shot film is something far more stripped back and lower in budget, but no less intriguing for it. Despite some devilish reviews from fans and critics alike, Neill Blomkamp’s Demonic is a distinctive, if flawed, offering in an overstuffed field that is far better than expected.

Once a sci-fi wunderkind, Neill Blomkamp’s now more likely known in many a film fan circle for pulling out of almost as many movies as he’s actually directed. After the runaway success of his Best Picture-nominated debut (and all-round instant sci-fi classic) District 9, the South African bobbed from giant tentpole to giant tentpole, never quite finding his footing. Now some ten years on, having flirted with everything from Alien 5 (Ridley Scott killed it) to RoboCop Returns (Blomkamp quit over scheduling problems), he’s turning his back on well-known IP altogether, to forge his own path.
What started with self-funded experimental outfit Oats Studios (their YouTube shorts are a fascinating watch) has now landed at the equally independent Demonic; a back-to-basics possession horror with plenty of Blomkamp’s unique brand of inventive sci-fi sprinkled amongst the usual jumps and bumps. Shot amidst the 2020 pandemic, it’s certainly a new dawn,...

When you give your horror movie the simple and uninspiring title of ‘Demonic’, you better be ready to do something big, something exciting! And if there’s any director that could do that with a horror movie, Neill Blomkamp might be the guy. I know his movies have divided opinion since his brillinat debut feature District 9 but Elysium and Chappie have both been full of originality and creativity so I was hoping he’d bring that into the horror genre.
There’s plenty of originality at least when it comes to the movies core concept and ideas. A woman unleashes demons and supernatural forces when she takes part in futuristic labortorary expertiments that enable her to talk to her her currently comatose mother. A mother she has not spoken to...

Director Neill Blomkamp has given us a unique mixture of films, one great, one terrible and one right down the middle. District 9 was a sharp, socially conscious horror flick that achieved "instant classic" status. Elysium was an effective riff on class warfare. And Chappie lacked heart.
So where does Demonic rank among Blomkamp's oeuvre? The generic title would have you believe this is a generic movie, which it is. Despite moments of indelible craft, Demonic is closer to Chappie than District 9. The film is a mashup of demons, possessions, metaphors and sanatoriums that ends up being rather dull, uninspired.
The best thing the film has going for it is its heady concept, the idea that you can enter someone else's dreams through a virtual headset. The virtual world adds a kick to Blomkamp's script--the real-world portions can't help but feel flat by comparison, and you spend most the...

Neill Blomkamp’s new horror film “Demonic” seemingly has everything: a trauma subplot, an estranged mother and daughter relationship, a nightmare sequence with monsters, a group of Vatican soldiers performing exorcisms and VR scenes filmed using volumetric capture video technology.
The story follows a woman, Carly (Carly Pope), whose mom, Angela (Nathalie Boltt), is in a coma. When Carly was a teenager, Angela had some sort of a break and killed 21 people, resulting in a decades-long estrangement, but now, Carly gets recruited by two doctors (who turn out to be a Vatican special forces team of sorts), to reach out to her. The doctors, Michael (Michael J. Rogers) and Daniel (Terry Chen), hook her up to a device – and this is where the volumetric capture comes in – which lets her enter her mom’s subconscious and walk around in her mind amid all her memories. However, there’s a demon...

With his new film “Demonic,” writer-director Neill Blomkamp has done something he’s never done before: He’s made a feature film that’s almost completely pointless.
The man behind “District 9,” “Elysium,” and “Chappie” has never been particularly subtle about his allegories, whether the films are acclaimed or not. So far he’s used sci-fi trappings to explore the evils of apartheid and health care, and to address at least some of the bigger questions about artificial intelligence. They’re usually big swings, the sci-fi films of Neill Blomkamp, so it’s hard to begrudge him for going for a bunt this time.
But “Demonic” isn’t just a low-budget supernatural–sci-fi thriller; it’s also a shallow one, a boring one, a poorly conceived one — and the characters stink too. It’s a horror movie with no ideas and only half a scare. It’s a sci-fi movie...

Neill Blomkamp’s sci-fi work finds its chief pleasures as a cinema of the hyperreal. Aliens, robots, and impossibly cool implements of destruction exist fifteen minutes into the future, covered in the grime and grit and chipped imperfection of used objects, in alternate worlds as beholden to the violence of material inequity as our own. Anderson Cooper (playing himself) reveals speculative history as breaking news coverage. The fantastically imaginary becomes physically palpable. Blomkamp’s chief aesthetic guideposts are visual media’s pinnacles of “you are there” immediacy: cinema verité, video games, documentary. His cinema is vividly externalized, rife with world-building, sprawling in scope, and rooted in a firm sense of the material.
Implication that Demonic may not play to his strengths comes with the opening scene. In an economically cut series of crawling, low-angle handheld shots, uncannily perfect symmetrical compositions, and other dream sequence clichés, a woman (Carly Pope) wanders...

Technology has always been the dominant creative force behind the films of Neill Blomkamp, a former special effects artist whose “what if Apartheid, but aliens?” metaphor “District 9” earned him a Best Picture nomination before he was 30, whose dopey Matt Damon vehicle “Elysium” took class warfare to intergalactic levels, and whose Twitter-famous “Chappie” — perhaps the best movie ever made about a psychotically obnoxious police robot being captured and reprogrammed by the South African rap group Die Antwoord — forever redefined people’s ability to identify Chappie.
And yet, despite those increasingly ridiculous examples, Blomkamp’s impetus to let digital tools drive his storytelling has never been more transparent or contrived than it is in his Doa new horror film “Demonic,” which leans on three sequences created with volumetric capture (described by Blomkamp as a kind of three-dimensional video system through which the actors are simultaneously recorded with 260 cameras and then...

Our prayers have been answered! Riverdale is on its way back to finish out season five, and E! News has an exclusive first look at what the second half of the season entails. As usual, you could not possibly begin to comprehend it all upon just one viewing, or even two. We watched it five or six times just to really take in all the wild things that appear to be happening in the aftermath of the prison break and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) disappearing during his maple mushroom trip, and while we're quite worried about Betty (Lili Reinhart) wielding a chainsaw, we're most concerned with the fact that Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) and Penelope (Nathalie Boltt) "started a...

Here’s your first look at the official World Premiere Trailer of filmmaker Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming horror/sci-fi film, Demonic.
The film uses a patent-pending new method of using volumetric capture (a three-dimensional video technology that turns actors into geometric objects.). The amount of volumetric capture in Demonic is the most ever seen in a feature film.

When Carly Spenser (Carly Pope) learns that her estranged mother Angela (Nathalie Boltt) has fallen into a coma, she reluctantly agrees to take part in a cutting-edge therapy that will allow her to tap into Angela’s still-active brain and communicate with her. Observed by physician Michael (Michael J. "She went on a homicidal rampage - this is your chance to ask her, 'why?'" IFC Midnight has unveiled the full official trailer for the horror Demonic, made by sci-fi filmmaker Neill Blomkamp working with some original horror concepts. He made this film quietly last year, taking friends and a small crew up into the Canadian forest during the pandemic summer. The only vague intro available: A young woman unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother & daughter are ruthlessly revealed. The movie stars Carly Pope, Terry Chen, Nathalie Boltt, Chris William Martin, and Michael Rogers. This is a much more coherent trailer than that thrilling first teaser, setting up the stakes involving this eerie simulation world she goes into to visit her mother in a coma. It seems to hearken back to VR horror films like eXistenZ or even The Lawnmower Man.

After following up District 9 will the large-scale sci-fi tentpole Elysium, Neill Blomkamp slightly lessened his scope with Chappie. Now, for his next feature, he made the best of the restrictions of the pandemic to film a down-and-dirty horror film in British Columbia, Canada. Ahead of an August 20 release from IFC Midnight, the first trailer for Demonic has now arrived.
Starring Carly Pope, Chris William Martin, and Nathalie Boltt, the film follows a young woman who unleashes terrifying demons when supernatural forces at the root of a decades-old rift between mother and daughter are revealed. The first trailer reveals the director is delighting in his grislier side for what are hopefully some effective scares.

Written and directed by Blomkamp, the film stars Carly Pope, Nathalie Boltt, Chris William Martin, Michael J Rogers, and Andrea Agur but beyond that, there's very little information on the film beyond the official synopsis which reads:

It's all compelling stuff to say the least, but to truly enjoy all of the season's nuances require multiple viewings. After Riverdale left us with that major cliffhanger (and even more unanswered questions) in the season three finale, we're more anxious than ever for the fourth season to premiere. The final episode of the season acted as a culmination of the show's first three seasons, bringing the stories of Jason Blossom, the Black Hood, and the Gargoyle King together at last. Though we imagine the story of The Farm will continue, we can only guess what the next mystery will be (and what in the heck will lead to that crazy flash-forward we saw in the last episode). There have been plenty of guesses about what lays ahead, but here's everything we know for certain so far.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains details of tonight’s Riverdale Season 3 finale.
Taking it over-the-top is the bottom line for the fizzy CW series Riverdale and by that measure the Season 3 finale that aired Wednesday was top-notch for a series that is more of a pop-television tone poem than a traditional (or rational) storytelling endeavor. The season’s finish-line episode checked off all the boxes for a show, too, that yearns to be sleek, sugary, surreal, sexy, soapy, silly, and swooning – and to always look good doing it,

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Chapter Fifty-Seven: Survive the Night,” the third season finale of “Riverdale.”
The Gargoyle King was finally unmasked on “Riverdale’s” third season finale, but like everything within that show, things were not as simple as they first appeared to be.
While it was Chic (Hart Denton) who was running around town doing most of the dirty work, such as getting the Griffins & Gargoyles game into the hands of the town’s youth in the first place, it was Penelope Blossom (Nathalie Boltt) who was really pulling the strings.
“Penelope’s a master manipulator,” says showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. “She suffered two core wounds in her life: One was she was basically bought by the Blossom family to marry Clifford, and then she lost her son Jason. When we were talking about who would want to take such an epic revenge on our families,...

What do you get when you mix the mysterious murderous dinner party of Clue with the human hunt of The Most Dangerous Game, and the general insanity of Riverdale? If you ask us, you get one of the best, most fun, most bonkers episodes the show has ever done. Wednesday's season three finale was everything season three has been promising to be, forcing the core four to play one last wild game of G&G, revealing Penelope Blossom (Nathalie Boltt) to have been behind everything (even working with the Black Hood) as revenge for everything that has happened to her, and the Gargoyle King to be the very not-dead, not-Betty's-brother Chic (Hart Denton), while Betty's actual half brother Charles it not...

[This story contains spoilers from the season three finale of Riverdale.] Even by the high-octane standards of Riverdale, Wednesday's third-season finale is a roller coaster. After a season that’s frequently had them on separate paths, "Survive the Night" reunites the core foursome of Archie (Kj Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Veronica (Camilla Mendes) for a final, terrifying set of trials at the hands of the mysterious Gargoyle King, who is revealed to be Penelope Blossom (Nathalie Boltt). The gang are abducted and sent into the woods to fight for their lives in a “...

Nathalie Boltt is an exciting actress who utilizes her global travels to influence her characters and her impressive voiceover work. She is delightfully perverted as supervillain Penelope Blossom on The CW’s hit series Riverdale. This character has been listed as “Worst Mother…But the Most Watchable” by Rotten Tomatoes. Nathalie Boltt originally hails from South Africa where she has a degree in dance and drama. She had the lead role in her native South Africa’s longest running hit drama series, The Need (Isidingo). Having spent a lot of time in New Zealand, she also appeared in Bloodlines, When We Go To […]

Riverdale Season 3 will include a flashback episode called "The Midnight Club", which will be based loosely on the John Hughes classic The Breakfast Club. To take this episode to a whole new level of radness, Anthony Michael Hall has been cast in the episode!
In the episode, the audience will learn some dark secrets from when the adult characters were high school students. Anthony Michael Hall will take on the role Principal Featherhead, the longstanding principal at Riverdale High who ends up getting caught up in the game the teenagers are playing in an unexpected way.
There's also some fun promo art that was released showing Hall in the role of Principal Featherhead as well as high school yearbook photos of the adult actors as teenagers.
As far as the cast goes for the younger version of the adult characters, Lili Reinhart is playing a younger version of Alice Cooper...

If you ask Nathalie Boltt, her Riverdale character recovered from her season two injuries way too quickly. Penelope Blossom was hospitalized back at the beginning of the season after her murderer husband hung himself and her angry daughter Cheryl burned the house down, and while Pen was back up on her feet and starting her own business as a prostitute while emotionally torturing her daughter in no time, Boltt wishes the healing process had been longer and a little less successful. "In my view, I recovered a little quickly from the burns. I would have liked to be like Hound on Game of Thrones, like if half my face really had just been left burned and melted. That would be so cool," the actress tells E! News,...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Riverdale” Episode 18, “Chapter Thirty-One: A Night to Remember.”]
Well, the Riverdale High musical went about as well as could be expected, and by that we mean that someone got murdered.
For the special episode airing Wednesday, the students of “Riverdale” staged a production of “Carrie: The Musical,” a Broadway musical adapted from Stephen King’s 1974 novel. Kevin Keller (Casey Cott) directed the play with Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) in the title role and Alice Cooper (Madchen Amick) as her religious mother Margaret. Or at least, that was the plan until Kevin continued to receive cut-and-paste death threats from the Black Hood (but didn’t he die?) demanding that Cheryl be replaced as the lead or else a very heavy sandbag would take her out of commission.
Even though Cheryl refuses to bow to thespian terrorism, her mother Penelope (Nathalie Boltt) refuses to let her participate, forcing Kevin to replace Cheryl with...

Things are about to get even crazier in Riverdale. Hiram's plan moves into a new phase and it involves Fred Andrews. The Cooper family gets a visit from Polly, while Betty investigates her brother. And, there's a will reading.
The official episode description from the CW says, "After learning that his dad is considering running for mayor of Riverdale, Archie (Kj Apa) begins to grow concerned that the Lodges may have found their newest pawn in Fred (Luke Perry). Meanwhile, Betty (Lili Reinhart) becomes increasingly suspicious of Chic's (guest star Hart Denton) strange behavior and enlists Kevin's (Casey Cott) help to figure out what Chic is hiding. Finally, Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) and Penelope (guest star Nathalie Boltt) are surprised when they learn that Clifford left a secret will, and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) makes a major discovery in his quest to take down Hiram (Mark Consuelos)."...

It’s a Sunday night: you’ve just finished your job delivering leaflets for a local takeaway, you have algebra homework to do, you haven’t cleaned your room and your mum’s on the warpath. You’re sat in bed with ice cream watching serial killer documentaries and listening to The Smiths. Everything’s fine.
We’ve all been teenagers, and it isn’t easy. Puberty’s happening. You’re trying to do homework instead of going out with your friends every night. All your friends are making out with friends of friends. You have to think of clever tweets and take aesthetic selfies for Instagram. Your phone cannot be out of your line of sight for a second. It’s the apocalypse.
And your parents don’t understand, they’re just in your face all the time, trying to make you do chores or last week’s essay.

It's a dangerous time to be in Riverdale. Jughead's allegience to the Serpents spirals out of control and sucks Archie in, while Betty continues to be harassed by the Black Hood and Cheryl deals with the aftermath of Nick's attack.

Betty (Lili Reinhart) turns to Veronica (Camila Mendes) for help when she's thrust into the center of a burgeoning mystery surrounding The Sugarman. Warning: Spoiler alert! Do not proceed if you haven’t watched Thursday’s season one finale of Riverdale!
Riverdale ended its first season with a bang on Thursday! Just as the town was unraveling the truth behind Jason Blossom’s death, another shocking blow came in the finale’s last moments, when Fred Andrews (Luke Perry) was gunned down during a robbery at Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe as son Archie (Kj Apa) helplessly tried to intervene.
Et hopped on the phone with Riverdale executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who stayed mum on Fred’s fate, but dished on how the shocking events of the finale -- which included intense family drama for Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse), as well -- will affect each character as Riverdale looks ahead to its second season.
Et: After revealing Jason’s killer in last week’s penultimate episode, the finale was tasked with tying up the loose ends, but...

District 9 Directed by: Neill Blomkamp Written by: Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell Starring: Sharlto Copley, Vanessa Haywood, Johan van Schoor, Nathalie Boltt First contact. Who thought it would be this messy? War is hell. And now Neill Blomkamp, the director of District 9, vividly demonstrates that apartheid is also hell. In a blistering, hard-edged blend of science fiction storyline, corporate morals inspired by the Third Reich, and adrenaline spiked action, District 9 does for science fiction what Saving Private Ryan did for war movies. Let me quickly add there is no preaching. Blomkamp doesn’t show and tell. He shows and shows and shows again in a no-respite avalanche of agonized faces, seriously wrecked bodies, and searing emotions. Along the way, the movie also delivers the first serious CGI candidate for an Academy Award. Not for effects. For best actor in a supporting role. District 9 aliens (prawns to...

Quote clever meets not-quite-satisfying
District 9 begins with a classic science-fiction premise. A flurry of documentary-style interviews and mock TV news footage recap the chaotic recent events: a giant alien ship appeared over South Africa, and after months of watching it hover silently, human soldiers cracked it open to see what was inside. They found a large number of malnourished, human-sized, insect-like aliens. The ailing creatures were moved en masse to a holding camp called District 9, which has, in the twenty years since, become a crime-ridden slum where black markets sell alien weaponry and underground dealers import large quantities of cat food. The aliens find canned fish delectable. They’re intelligent enough to speak a language and build space ships, but on earth the “prawns,...

August is going to be a fairly original month, come to think of it. While the top dogs of the next 30-days all crib from some other source, (District 9 excluded), there’s a fair amount of fresh writing sneaking into multiplexes to round off the summer. For example, you’ve got Paper Heart, Shorts (another kid’s movie from Robert Rodriguez, who has both Planet Terror and Spy Kids on his resume), Ponyo, the animated film from the beloved Hayao Miyazaki, Cold Souls, and even the bubbly looking Post Grad.
But fear not, for those who still want a few more servings of that summer popcorn movie glory will have plenty to choose from. The G.I Joe movie is finally coming out this Friday, a sequel to Rob Zombie’s Halloween is due at the end of the month, and beach reading is getting a trip to the movies...
