Reel Works has revealed the full lineup for its 2023 film festival, which celebrates the work of young, emerging filmmakers.
Taking place Nov. 18-19 at New York’s Sva Theater, this year’s festival will feature 42 narrative and doc projects, with over 85 percent of films presented from Bipoc and or LGBTQ+ filmmakers.
The festival’s second annual iteration will once again consist of projects from filmmakers ages 14 to 24 in the Reel Works community. That includes original projects produced through the nonprofit’s Documentary and Narrative Lab programming, alongside the premiere of movies from the inaugural Supported Summer Lab, a workshop that supports neurodivergent teens in developing their own original films.
The event will also mark the first time the Reel Works Film Festival features the work of external creatives with screenings of selected titles.

The Oscars celebrate excellence in the world of filmmaking, and the people who write the stories and scripts are a huge part of it.
Variety exclusively reported “Barbie” would be campaigned for best original screenplay for the upcoming awards season rather than in adapted screenplay as had been presumed. The decision brought about some interesting debate on social media, and even some Academy members contacted me directly with questions and opinions about it. But it’s not a black-or-white question. The categories in which a movie competes aren’t always as clear as you’d think, as seen through the history of nominees and winners.
Let’s start with the existing definitions. What does it mean to be an original script vs. an adapted one? As most people know, an original work creates an entirely new narrative, while an adapted one transforms pre-existing material into a screenplay.

Unlike in the U.K., Spain and Sweden — where kings and queens are still formally heads of state — Italy’s royal family, the House of Savoy, no longer rules.
The last heir to the Italian throne, Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy and his family were forced into exile in 1946, when the prince was 9. That year, the Italian people voted in a referendum about whether the monarchy should continue. They chose to create a republic and punished the royals for failing to save their country from Mussolini’s fascist regime. The Savoys were allowed to return in 2003 after 57 years of exile.
In 1978, Vittorio Emanuele – the king who never was – got into trouble while he and his wife and kids were living on the island of Cavallo, on the south coast of Corsica, France. As reconstructed from eyewitness interviews in a new Netflix documentary, on a hot August night he became enraged when...

The King Who Never Was is a Netflix documentary series that focuses on Vittorio Emanuele, the last heir to the throne of Italy from the House of Savoy. While Vittorio Emanuele comes from a prominent royal lineage, his life has been marred by various scandals. These include his controversial self-proclamation as king, his espousal of antisemitic beliefs, and his alleged involvement in sex trafficking and the murder case of a 19-year-old named Dirk Hamer. The series delves deep into the disturbing incident surrounding Dirk Hamer’s murder, which left his family traumatized and motivated Dirk’s sister, Birgit, to seek justice. However, Birgit soon found herself engaged in a daunting battle against the powerful force of Vittorio Emanuele, who, backed by his wealth and alliances, managed to evade judicial consequences for his actions.

Bent Hamer’s films are known for their deadpan humour but nothing funny – nor sad, nor plausible – happens in this film about a man whose job is to break the news to those whose relations have been killed
Bent Hamer is a Norwegian film-maker who began his career with quirky absurdist movies in the 00s such as Kitchen Stories and O’Horten, and also his rather tougher film Factotum from 2005 – a fictionalised study of Charles Bukowski starring Matt Dillon. Perhaps Hamer’s career benefited a good deal from international festival juries having a soft spot for his kind of goofy deadpan humour, but I was never entirely sure exactly how funny or meaningful his creations ultimately were. However, his film-making had a certain rigour and poise.
The same, sadly, can’t be said for his new film, set in some featureless anytown in North America, in which a bland young guy...

The Voices Behind ‘Naatu Naatu’
Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj are the singers who brought composer M.M. Keeravaani’s Golden Globe-winning and Oscar nominated song “Naatu Naatu” from S.S. Rajamouli’s “Rrr” to life.
Featuring lyrics by Chandrabose, the energetic song, shot against the backdrop of the Mariinskyi Palace in Kyiv, Ukraine, shows stars Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr. in a dance-off.
Bhairava is the son of Keeravaani and has watched the composer work since childhood. He made his film singing debut in 2011 with “Rajanna” and has sung several hit songs since. He made his film composing debut with 2019’s “Mathu Vadalara.”
“It was quite simple. Rahul and I were instructed to render the song with an uninhibited attitude and maintain the kind of energy the song and the situation demanded. Also, getting an in-depth insight into the song situation also helped,” Bhairava says about the preparation for “Naatu Naatu.

”It’s good for there to be someone between the actor and the director,” said Dutch actor Joy Delima.
When actor Markoesa Hamer first started working as an intimacy co-ordinator on Dutch film and TV sets five years ago, she was concerned the industry would not think there was a need for her role in the way there was in North America and the UK.
“I was worried that in Holland people would never want that,” Hamer recalled.
Now they have become common place, although older Dutch actors initially felt they had no need of intimacy coordinators, Hamer told a...

Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell gorge on each other in more ways than one in Luca Guadagnino’s “Bones and All.” The cannibal romance follows the pair on a dreamy, grisly road trip across the 1980s Midwest, and while Guadagnino veers from turning the movie into outright horror, there are plenty of graphic scenes featuring blood, guts, and viscera crafted from maraschino cherries, Fruit Roll-Ups, and chocolate.
A recent GQ interview with the film’s head of makeup, Fernanda Perez, reveals that Guadagnino sought realism beyond the stuff of movie-magic practical effects. Specifically, the filmmakers consulted with a pathologist ahead of production to understand how cannibalism works in practical terms.
“Luca is very specific,” Perez said. “Since the beginning, he told us he didn’t want gore or fantasy. We contacted a pathologist because we wanted to know what it looks like to eat a person — and we discovered that...
