The lack of Latino showrunners in Hollywood is being addressed by the Alliance of Latinx Executives and Rise Up who are partnering on an advocacy program that will pair 10 high-level executives with 10 high-level writers from the community to increase showrunner opportunities.
Of the 500+ shows in production during the 2021-22 television season, and the approximately 6K writers employed by those shows, less than 20 Latinx writers held the position of showrunner. It’s the second-most challenging roadblock for Latinx writers after breaking out of the entry-level staff writer position, according to the orgs.
The inaugural group of executives includes Joey Chavez (HBO Max), Tom Lerner (A+E Studios), Adam Martinez (CBS Studios), Alejandro Melendez (BBC Studios), Michelle Mendelovitz (Mattel Television Studios), Edy Mendoza (Netflix), Diana Mogollon (Independent) and Nina Tassler (Independent).
They will be partnered with the following writers: Davah Avena, Tawnya Benavides Bhattacharya & Ali Laventhol, Sal Calleros, Chad Gomez Creasey, Luisa Leschin,...

Netflix’s new trailer for Firefly Lane season two part one shows there’s tension between Tully and Kate, but it sort of balances that out by revealing more about their lifelong friendship. Part one of the final season premieres on December 2, 2022, with season two part two arriving in 2023.
Season one of the drama, based on the bestselling novel by Kristin Hannah, debuted in February 2021 and starred Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke as lifelong best friends who stuck by each other’s side through thick and thin. Heigl and Chalke are back as Tully and Kate, respectively, for the second season. They’re joined by returning cast members Ben Lawson as Johnny Ryan, Ali Skovbye as young Tully, Roan Curtis as young Kate, Yael Yurman as Marah, and Beau Garrett as Cloud.
Netflix’s official description:
“What could possibly have ended the tight-knit thirty-year friendship of Tully and Kate, our ‘Firefly Lane Girls Forever?...

The cast of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist might have performed their last number. NBC has opted not to give a third-season renewal to the musical dramedy with a passionate following, which topped USA Today’s annual Save Our Shows poll for a second consecutive year.
The decision comes three and a half weeks after the series, headlined by Jane Levy, aired its Season 2 finale. As Deadline reported last month, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, a middling linear Live+Same Day ratings performer with an outsized digital footprint, had been in consideration for a pickup by NBC sibling streamer Peacock. I hear that Peacock, the streaming home of Zoey’s first two seasons, ultimately opted not to proceed with a third season.
In addition to being a digital phenom, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist also has gotten awards recognition. Lionsgate Television, which co-produces the series with Universal Television, will be mounting an aggressive...

We’ll be seeing more of David, Emily, Leif and Tobin on the second season of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist. Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant and Kapil Talwalkar, who recurred respectively as the characters in season 1, have been promoted to series regular for season 2 of the NBC musical dramedy starring Jane Levy. The series is slated to return to NBC in midseason.
Created and executive produced by Jake in Progress creator Austin Winsberg, who serves as showrunner, Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist stars Levy as Zoey Clarke, a whip-smart computer coder forging her way in San Francisco. After an unusual event, Zoey, who always preferred podcasts over pop songs, suddenly starts to hear the innermost wants, thoughts and desires of the people around her – her family, co-workers and complete strangers – through popular songs. At first, she questions her own sanity, but after getting some guidance from her musically adept neighbor,...

NBC has ordered a second season of musical dramedy Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist starring Jane Levy. We hear the order is for 13 episodes.
A co-production between Lionsgate TV and Universal TV, the series had been considered the strongest contender among NBC’s bubble shows this season. It has a passionate following and recently topped USA Today’s annual Save Our Shows poll with record support.
Of the other NBC bubble series, the network this week canceled Lincoln Rhyme: The Hunt for the Bone Collector and Perfect Harmony. Manifest is still very much in contention as NBC and producer Warner Bros. TV are discussing a deal, while Indebted is not expected to continue.
Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist has been a digital phenom with huge online/social media following whose very modest Live+Same Day linear ratings are dwarfed by its delayed multi-platform numbers. It is one of NBC’s strongest digital performers,...
