Exclusive: James McAvoy’s directorial debut, which we revealed last fall, has set lead cast and is heading to the Cannes market with Bankside and UTA Independent Film Group.
BAFTA winner McAvoy will take on a supporting role in the movie, which will be led by BAFTA-nominated How To Have Sex breakout Samuel Bottomley and newcomer Séamus McLean Ross, who is currently filming on Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
Currently titled California Schemin’ (working title), the film will chart the true story of two Scottish lads from Dundee who conned the international music industry by adopting American accents and pretending to be established Californian rap duo, Silibil N’ Brains.
In the late 90’s, Gavin Bain (McLean Ross) and Billy Boyd (Bottomley) had their musical ambitions consistently ridiculed for having the ‘wrong’ accents so they went for broke and reinvented themselves as Californian rappers. McAvoy’s movie will show how the...

Stars: Bee Vang, Corrinne Mica, María José Vargas Agudelo, Martin Harris, Guillermo Blanco, Jane Hammill, Michael Paul Levin, Sean R Jr. Soukkala | Written and Directed by Nicholas Bain
Voice of Shadows is a slow-moving gothic-style horror about a young man, Gabriel (Guillermo Blanco), who tries to prevent his dark past from repeating itself when his girlfriend Emma (Corrinne Mica) inherits an estate where she needs to abide by eccentric stipulations for the deal to go through.
I will say this for Voice of Shadows, writer/director Nicholas Bain knows how to craft atmosphere. This film starts off on an eerie note and things don’t get any less creepy as time goes on. Making three people visiting an old lady (early on in the film), in broad daylight, feels like three people facing off against pure evil is a remarkable feat. Unfortunately for Bain, it does feel – at times – that...

Amber Bain (aka The Japanese House) recently paid the NPR offices a visit for a Tiny Desk Concert, during which the June 2023 CoSign alum performed highlights from her fantastic sophomore effort, In the End It Always Does.
The UK singer-songwriter marked her appearance at the Tiny Desk by swapping out some of the synth sounds on In the End for soft, sweeping arrangements with brushed drums and a violin, aided occasionally by resonant piano and baritone sax sounds.
The set opened with a stripped-down, intimate version of “Sunshine Baby,” before moving on to a performance of “Baby Goes Again.” A quick tuning of her guitar led into the keyboard-driven tune “Over There,” before wrapping up the set with the album single “Boyhood.” As the concert came to a close, Bain’s “thank you” to the audience was barely audible over booming rounds of applause.

It’s been almost six months since the series finale of Succession, and Jesse Armstrong has been enjoying the rest.
“There was some sadness about the show ending,” says the British creator and showrunner of HBO’s multiple Emmy-winning drama, which followed the misadventures of the deliriously dysfunctional Roy family, owners of media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar Royco. “[But] doing the show was such a rush of pleasure and anxieties and hard work, of pondering the next season and worrying that you’re going to screw it up [that] is is very, very nice to have time to read again. And to travel.”
Since Succession finished, Armstrong has been on a bit of a victory lap, attending international television festivals and book tours (Faber and Faber published a series of authorized Succession script books) while pondering what to do next.
He’s had an incredible run so far.
Even before Succession, which has won 13 Emmys,...

Creative talents’ worries have been in focus this summer in Hollywood amid the dual writers and actors strikes, along with much debate about whether AI could replace artists and upset production. Management consulting firm Bain & Co. is signaling there could be a less contentious future though, which it outlines in a new report entitled “Tech in Content Production: Will AI Kill the Video Star?”
The authors, Nicole Magoon, Andre James, David Sanderson and Imogen Rey, even offer an encouraging spoiler in the subtitle: “It might help them.”
The key to that is the Bain team’s clear recommendation on whether AI should be explored as a replacement for writers, actors and visual artists. “Studios should spurn that path, but they can use technology to reduce budgets by pulling more of the production process up front and streamlining production and post-production,” they appeal to entertainment companies. “The savings will enable studios...

Raquel Leviss is speaking out for the first time since the explosive "Vanderpump Rules" season 10 reunion. On Aug. 16, part one of the 28-year-old reality TV star's podcast interview with Bethenny Frankel dropped, and Leviss says she's taken some time to herself to reflect and has finally "come to the place where it makes sense to me."
Of taking a step back from the spotlight, Leviss said on the "Just B With Bethenny Frankel" podcast, "Part of the reason why I wanted to take some time away is just because it was so chaotic and loud and there was such vitriol online. But then the other part of the reason why I wanted to go to a treatment facility was to understand my behaviors and my goal was to really get down to the bottom of, 'Ok, why am I choosing men that are unavailable? Why do I keep finding myself in unhealthy relationships?...

Romance and reverie have always been at the heart of Amber Bain’s music. The British singer-songwriter’s moniker, the Japanese House, calls back to the blissful childhood memories of her parents’ vacation home, which was furnished to resemble a Japanese tea house, and the sun-washed imagery of her music captures that spirit. Bain sings wistfully of complicated relationships, lending her stories of queer love a dreamlike quality.
On her 2019 debut, Good at Falling, Bain luxuriated in melodrama, her expressive contralto taking center stage atop reverb-heavy ambient pop. Initially, the musician’s sophomore effort, In the End It Always Does, seems to follow suit, with a summery ambience, songs about emotional distance, and her unmistakable voice. As the album unfolds, though, her approach feels like it’s been flipped, with vocal hooks taking a backseat to highly textured folktronica instrumentation and a more impressionistic rendering of desire.

The Japanese House has teamed up with her Dirty Hit labelmate Matty Healy for the new single “Sunshine Baby.” It’s the latest preview of In the End It Always Does, Amber Bain’s second studio album under the moniker.
Bain co-produced the dreamy, synth-laden “Sunshine Baby” with Chloe Kraemer and Healy’s The 1975 bandmate George Daniel. On the track, she reminisces fondly about a past relationship that was destined not to make it with the assistance of backing vocals from Healy. “I miss falling in love,” Bain sings. “I miss the feeling that you get/ When someone fits just like a glove.”
“‘Sunshine Baby’ is my nickname for my dog, and my ex and I always used to lay on the beach together being sunshine babies,” Bain said in a statement. “The chorus is kind of a submission to the end of our relationship, but singing it in a positive light.

Amber Bain is back with “Boyhood,” a new song from her project The Japanese House. Listen to the track below.
“Boyhood” pairs bubbling synths with driving acoustic guitar as The Japanese House looks back at her adolescence, made all the more confusing by her queer identity. Fortunately, with the opening line, “I could’ve been somebody else but I’ve been out looking for me,” she sings the track with the confidence of someone who’s come to accept themselves.
Watch the music video for The Japanese House’s “Boyhood” below.
“When my best friend Katie and I were young and in love, we dreamed of riding off into the distance on her horse Bam Bam, away from all the problems that came from being gay and in love back then,” Bain explained of the track.
“This song talks about how sometimes, however hard you try, you can’t help...
