A new spin on You Bet Your Life, the personality-driven game show that gave Groucho Marx a new level of fame on the then-emerging medium of television, has been sold in 85% of the country ahead of its fall debut.
Hosted by Jay Leno, the new version of the show will launch across Fox’s portfolio of 29 stations as well as stations owned by Sinclair, Nexstar, Scripps, Meredith, Gray and other companies. The announcement came during NATPE, whose annual Miami confab is happening virtually this year in the latest adjustment to Covid-19.
The team mounting the new version said it will retain many elements of the Marx-hosted original, which ran on both radio and television and was a defining show of the 1950s.

Exclusive: As the $71.3 billion Disney-Fox deal nears the finish line, there is a steady earner that often gets overlooked among the assets that will remain behind as part of Fox Corp.: MyNetworkTV.
The programming service, launched with fanfare in 2006 as a bid to counter the emerging CW, had to regroup not long after its debut. Its ambitious slate of English-language telenovelas failed to gain traction, the economy was souring, and MyNetworkTV stations were anxious about the trajectory of their advertising revenue as the country entered a financial crisis.
Rather than abandoning the effort, the company’s then-president, Greg Meidel (who has since become president of corporate sibling Twentieth Television) announced a pivot away from a full-blown network approach and toward a tighter programming focus. Over the decade since the 2009 switch — which reduced the MyNet schedule to two hours a night from Monday to Friday and a steady...

Fox cut a significant figure at this year’s just-concluded Natpe, promoting its forthcoming Meredith Vieira-hosted game show, 25 Words or Less, and getting its messages out on multiple executive panels.
The activity level is not a radical departure from past years, but the Miami conference offered the industry one of the clearest views yet of the company that will remain after the merger with Disney is finally consummated this year.
The entity formerly known as 21st Century Fox has been re-christened Fox Corp., with the final regulatory approval expected in the coming weeks for Disney’s $71.3 billion purchase of most of the company. The remaining elements of Fox are all healthy assets: Fox News, rising sports network FS1, the Fox broadcast network and a portfolio of local TV stations that ranks No. 1 in terms of revenue among all groups, whether private or network-owned.

Stefanos Miltsakakis, the powerful martial arts muscleman who squared off against Jean-Claude Van Damme in Maximum Risk, The Quest and three other action films, has died. He was 59.
Miltsakakis died in his sleep on Jan. 10 at his home in Santa Monica, his longtime personal manager, Stephen Brown, told The Hollywood Reporter. "He was a mentor to so many of us who were blessed to have known him," Brown said.

Meredith Vieira, former longtime host of the syndicated Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, has been tapped to host and produce 25 Words or Less, a new celebrity/civilian game show that is getting a three-week summer trial run on several Fox Television stations. Set to debut August 6, the half-hour show has a strong celebrity backing: It’s a collaboration of Lisa Kudrow, Dan Bucatinsky, Mary McCormack, Michael Morris, Bruce Sterten — creator of the board games 25 Words or Less and Taboo — and John Quinn, who serves as showrunner.
“The most popular game shows are often defined by their iconic hosts — that’s why we are so excited to have Meredith host 25 Words or Less,” said Stephen Brown, Evp Programming and Development at Fox TV Stations. “As host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Meredith became the longest-standing female game show host in history. In everything she does, she brings humor,...
