“Survivor 45” made history once again last week as Kaleb Gebrewold successfully played his Shot in the Dark to a unanimous vote against him, breaking the record with 11 votes cast for him, two more than when Kelley Wentworth back in “Survivor: Second Chance” played an immunity idol negating nine votes against her. Let’s break down what events transpired that led up to this groundbreaking moment as the tribes converged to one beach.
After the ouster of Brando Meyer in the last episode, Kendra McQuarrie was on the warpath and wanted revenge on Emily Flippen for lying to her, and siding with the Reba duo of Austin Li Coon and Drew Basile. The next day, right before the boats arrived to pick the tribes up to unite with everyone, Bruce Perreault was able to find the new Lulu idol underneath the shelter and shared it with the whole tribe, minus Katurah Topps.

Since the creation of the Shot in the Dark twist at the start of the “new era” that began with “Survivor 41,” several castaways have tried using the one-in-six advantage to save their ailing games, but no one ever had luck on their side. Until now. Warning: this article contains spoilers from “Survivor 45,” Episode 6, so read at your own risk!
After the remaining 13 players attended a group tribal council in the pre-merge phase of the game, Kaleb Gebrewold knew he was in danger. He tried pegging J. Maya Krishnan-Jha as a bigger threat, but it didn’t seem to work. One by one, each player went to the cast their votes and all of them wrote down Kaleb’s name. Kaleb, having been warned by Emily Flippen that his game was hanging from a thread, didn’t vote and instead opted to play his Shot in the Dark.

On Wednesday’s 12th episode of “Survivor 44,” the Tika three stuck together and gained a new ally in Heidi Lagares-Greenblatt. Together they all voted to send home Jaime Lynn Ruiz, whose exuberant spirit remained until the bitter end. “Oh my gosh! I’m so grateful to make the Top 6. This is a huge accomplishment,” she stated after leaving the game. Read on for Jaime’s “Survivor 44” exit interview from the end of the episode.
But Jaime’s confessional soon turned uncomfortably awkward, as she once again brought up her fake immunity idol that she believed to be real. “Finding an idol, that was one of my number-one goals and I’m so grateful,” she declared. “I am proud of myself for overcoming so many fears. I can do anything at this point. I had so much fun playing my favorite game in the entire world.”

Of the players eliminated so far on “Survivor 44,” Gold Derby asked viewers in our recent poll to name who should return for a future All-Stars season. The poll results are in and there is one name that tops the list of over two-thirds of voters: Frannie Marin! The only other castaway to earn more than 10% of the vote is Matthew Grinstead-Mayle, the adventurous superfan that left the game by choice due to a shoulder injury. (Note that we did not include Bruce Perreault as an option because Jeff Probst has already invited him back.)
Here are the complete poll results for who fans want back as an All-Star:
67% — Frannie Marin
14% — Matthew Grinstead-Mayle
7% — Matt Blankinship

Following this week’s elimination of Frannie Marin from “Survivor 44,” only seven castaways remain in the game to be named Sole Survivor. That means 11 other players have already fallen by the wayside, either voted out of the game or evacuated for medical reasons. Setting aside Bruce Perreault, who Jeff Probst has already invited to play again, we want to know which of the other 10 eliminated players You think is deserving of a second chance in an All-Stars season? Vote in our “Survivor 44” poll below.

Warning: the following article contains spoilers from the ninth episode of “Survivor 44” on CBS — read at your own risk!
The April 26 hour ended in a bit of a shocker, as Kane Fritzler was voted out with Jaime Lynn Ruiz‘s fake idol in his pocket. Jaime had secretly given Kane her fake idol (which she believed to be real) earlier in the day, in order to prevent someone from stealing it thanks to a potential Knowledge Is Power advantage. For the record, no such advantage has appeared yet in Season 44.
We know what you’re thinking: once Jeff Probst started reading Kane’s name aloud in vote after vote, why didn’t Kane pass Jaime’s fake idol back to her? Well, simply put, it’s not allowed. Last year, Probst addressed this exact rule with Entertainment Weekly when a similar scenario happened during “Survivor 43.”

In CBS’s latest “Survivor 44” deleted scene, viewers learn more about Matt Blankinship‘s unsuccessful mad scramble to save himself from elimination in Episode 7. Prior to tribal council, Matt goes to Jaime Lynn Ruiz and basically throws Danny Massa under the bus for duping him into believing he’d found a hidden immunity idol, when really it was a fake one planted by Danny, who had the real one. Jaime’s response? She calls Matt a “liar liar, pants on fire.” Watch the video above.
The scene begins at the old Soka camp on Day 14, with Matt showing Jaime, Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho, Lauren Harpe and Brandon Cottom his former home. Remember, this small group lost the immunity challenge, so only they would be eligible to be voted out at the impending tribal council.

After being put in “Survivor” no-vote hell for the first 13 days of the game, Matt Blankinship is finally able to cast a vote at tribal council, and he can’t wait to finally play. Survivor is not an easy game. Producers dump castaways on a deserted beach with minimal resources and force them to compete in brutal physical challenges. They are starving, suffering from bug bites and other ailments, and are subject to harsh weather conditions. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that numerous players have quit over the show’s 44 seasons. But do the Survivor contestants still get paid if they forfeit their spot in the game?

Every Survivor fan knows that the Sole Survivor gets paid $1 million (before taxes) for winning their season. But what the CBS reality competition series doesn’t disclose on air is that producers pay the other contestants just for being on the show.
CinemaBlend reports that the first boot receives $3,500, and the total rises as the placement increases.

Lusth first appeared on Survivor: Cook Islands, where the tribes were split by ethnicity. He was on the Aitutaki tribe with other Hispanic American castaways. Lusth stood out for being likable and having fantastic survival skills.
He was runner-up and immediately returned for Survivor: Micronesia as one of the returning castaways going against fans. The former waiter and photographer played again in Survivor: South Pacific and Survivor: Game Changers. He never won the game.
The former reality star’s life after the show includes making public appearances. His Instagram is full of pictures of him enjoying the outdoors and building things as if he had never left the show.

First things first, we love Survivor. It has been one of the most exciting and compelling reality competition series on television since its first season in Borneo in 2000. However, because we admire Survivor so much, we acknowledge that the show needs some format changes. And Carson Garrett mastering the tree puzzle in Survivor 44 Episode 6 confirms our demand for producers to retire (some) old challenges.

It’s the episode of Survivor 44 we’ve all been dreading — the “mergatory.” That’s right; Survivor producers are sticking with the “new era” “earn the merge” concept in season 44, meaning that Tika, Soka, and Ratu are now living on one beach, but they aren’t technically merged. We’ll get further into this concept in our recap, but let’s just hope that the Survivor 44 cast somehow makes this awful twist somewhat bearable in episode 6.

CBS has released yet another deleted scene from “Survivor 44” Episode 5, this time focusing on Josh Wilder. The 34-year-old surgeon from Atlanta started out the game on the Soka tribe, where he was sitting between two dominant pairs. Then he switched over to Tika, where he became a target between the sometimes-friendly, sometimes-warring Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho and Carolyn Wiger.
On Day 11, Josh gives some insights into his thinking process after the tribe receives tree-mail about the impending immunity challenge (watch above). It’s “merge” time for the “Survivor” contestants as the “Next Time On” promo confirmed that all the tribes will coalesce on the same beach. Last week’s fifth episode saw the leave of Matthew Grinstead-Mayle from Ratu after sustaining an injury to his shoulder in the premiere when he fell off of a large rock. This is the second player this season to exit the game due to an injury, and though he technically was not involuntarily medically evacuated like Bruce Perrault was in the premiere, the pain was too excruciating for him to continue forward. Due to Matthew’s departure, the Tika tribe did not have to attend Tribal Council after losing the immunity challenge, but how will the rest of the cast look together when they unite on one beach? Read on as we’re breaking down the game.

Matthew: So before I left, obviously, Kane [Fritzler,] and I were very closely aligned. Brandon [Cottom] and I were still very much aligned. And on the surface, Jamie and I are obviously extremely tight. And then she gets shipped off.
When Carson [Garrett] comes in, that changed the tribe dynamic. And Lauren [Harpe] and I really buried the hatchet, and we’re doing well. And so Brandon and Lauren are trying to say,...

On Wednesday’s fifth episode of “Survivor 44,” Matthew Grinstead-Mayle woke up on Day 10 following what he called one of his hardest nights in the game due to pain from his shoulder injury from Day 2. Later on, Matthew met with the medical team and Jeff Probst where he decided to remove himself from the game. Read on for his “Survivor 44” exit interview from the end of the episode.
Back on Day 2 of the season, Matthew decided that he’d climb a rock close to the shore, but nearing the top of the rock, he fell into a shallow bit of water among other rocks. He cut up his foot and dislocated his shoulder, but was cleared to remain in the game under the guidance of taking it easy until it naturally healed. By Day 10, the pain had not subsided, only increased, and reached an unbearable level that made Matthew to make the tough decision.

‘Survivor 44’ Fans on Danny and Brandon Underestimating Carolyn, ‘Neither of Those Guys Are Winning’
Castaways have been taking risks for advantages on Survivor 44 journeys. But one journey gave castaways a different opportunity. Here is how fans reacted to Danny Massa and Brandon Cottom bonding while leaving out Carolyn Wiger.
[Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers from Survivor 44 Episode 5, “The Third Turd.”]
Danny, Brandon, and Carolyn go on a ‘Survivor 44’ journey
“The Third Turd” showed Tika after the vote for Sarah Wade. Yamil “Yam Yam” Arocho was upset that Carolyn blindsided him, and Josh Wilder was mad at Yam Yam for voting for him.
Carolyn left them to go on a journey after the tribe lost an immunity challenge. She met Danny Massa from Soka, and Brandon Cottom from Ratu. They found out they got to eat a meal together at the sanctuary and possibly trade information.
“I’m worried because Josh came back with an idol from the journey that he could totally use up until the merge,” she told them. Tika was expected to go to Tribal Council that night.

Survivor is a treacherous game in itself, but the season 44 castaways took the show’s dangers to the next level during the premiere. Bruce Perreault got a concussion within the first few minutes of the marooning. Matthew Grinstead-Mayle fell from a large rock at Ratu’s beach. And Brandon Cottom suffered from heat exhaustion during the Immunity Challenge. Survivor producers had to medically evacuate Bruce from the game in episode 1, and according to spoilers, one more castaway will soon join him.

Jeff Probst has hosted Survivor since the CBS reality competition series’ first season in 2000. And for the first time in the show’s history, he is also hosting a Survivor-themed podcast that airs alongside season 44’s episodes. Survivor has changed immensely in the 23 years it has been on CBS. Producers have introduced hidden immunity idols, removed the fan favorite auction, resorted to revealing the Sole Survivor during the Final Tribal Council, and so much more. But even with these format modifications, one aspect of Survivor has yet to change in recent seasons.

The Immunity Challenge for Survivor 44 Episode 2 on CBS featured the three tribes — Ratu, Soka, and Tika — racing through an obstacle course to get to a snake maze. The first two tribes to finish the maze would win reward and immunity, and the losing tribe would face Tribal Council.
All three tribes remained neck and neck throughout the challenge, but Ratu quickly secured the win when they got to the snake maze.

In the “Survivor 44” premiere, Soka tribe mates Matt Blankinship and Frannie Marin instantly connected on the basis of a shared sense of humor. Based on that kinship they solidified a Day 1 alliance with one another; on Day 4, an emotionally overwhelmed Matt realizes that he “really, really” likes Frannie. Is a showmance brewing? Above, watch the “Survivor 44” episode 2 sneak peek video for “Two Dorky Magnets.”
After starting the game with back-to-back reward and immunity challenge wins, the Soka tribe is able to kick back on Day 4 with some casual conversation. Matt describes to Claire Rafson how he became estranged from his pet dog due to a recent breakup that happened shortly before filming began. For Matt, the end of his relationship was something he wanted to “leave behind” when coming to the game, but he realized that it’s impossible to not bring along that kind of baggage.

During the first episode of “Survivor 44,” history was made as the medics had to be called out to help three different castaways: Bruce Perreault hit his head and was medevaced, Matthew Grinstead-Mayle fell from a rock and dislocated his shoulder, and Brandon Cottom experienced symptoms of overheating. CBS’s latest “Survivor 44” deleted scene focuses just on Matthew’s condition. Specifically, the 43-year old barbershop owner from Ohio reveals why sometimes you’ll see him wearing a shoulder sling and sometimes you won’t. Watch the video above.

“My game plan going into the challenge is to not wear my sling,” he explains in a private confessional. “I don’t want to show any weakness, not only to the other tribes but also not to my own tribe. I want them to know that I can push through this and, although I’m injured,...

Q: You obviously didn’t form a bond with Brandon [Cottom], but was there anyone else you clicked with naturally on your tribe?
Maddy: Yes, I would say I actually did click with Brandon. I slept with Brandon and Matthew [Grinstead-Mayle], who both ultimately ended up in my demise. So we were all friends. I did really like them, but we were not going to play Survivor together, I’ll tell you that.
The person I wanted to play Survivor with was Kane Fritzler. I love him. I think he’s so smart.

Wednesday’s premiere episode of “Survivor 44” did not go as planned for 28-year-old Maddy Pomilla. In her pre-game interview, the executive assistant from Brooklyn said she’d start the game from “one step back,” but admitted it’d be hard to not want to be in control of the game. By the time she was exiting as the first person voted out, Maddy could confess that her quest for control had “went a little topsy-turvy.” Read on for her “Survivor 44” exit interview from the end of the episode.
“I put my money where my mouth is and I just came up short,” said Maddy in her closing remarks. “But it feels good to come out and play really hard.” When Maddy was looped in to the discovery of the birdcage key by Brandon Cottom on Day 2, she became aware that he was unwilling to trust and work closely with her.
