Character departures are inevitable for most shows.
That doesn't mean we have to like them. Sometimes, a character has to go because it's necessary for the story.
Other times, the actor moves on to a new role, and the character can't continue without them.
Now and then, a character's time on a show comes to an end in a way that leaves us brokenhearted and feeling betrayed by the writers.
These exits took us by surprise, and not in a good way.

If you ask us, Alex Karev had one of the best character glow-ups of all time, with the kind of character development we can normally only dream about. His transformation from snarky, too-cool-for-school jock to the mature, brilliant man he became was one for the ages.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “How’s It Going to Be?,” the Sept. 5 series finale of “Roswell, New Mexico.”
In May, The CW pulled the plug on seven shows, including “Roswell, New Mexico,” which was airing its fourth season. On Monday night, the drama aired its final episode — one that showrunner Chris Hollier and the writers planned on being the Season 4 finale, not the final episode ever.
During the last episode, Max (Nathan Parsons) headed off to save the world through portal — one that would allow him to return and live happily ever after with Liz (Jeanine Mason), who he still intended to eventually marry.
“There was one change afterwards where the console melted, and Liz would feel like, ‘Oh no, I just got engaged and maybe he’s trapped there forever.’ It was the only thing we removed,” he tells Variety, noting that...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Roswell, New Mexico series finale “How’s It Going to Be.”] For the most part, Roswell, New Mexico leaves its aliens and humans in a good place. The series finale saw the defeat of Clyde (Andrew Lees), Michael (Michael Vlamis) and Alex (Tyler Blackburn) getting married, and Liz (Jeanine Mason) and Max (Nathan Dean) finally get engaged. However, it also ended with Max leaving Liz behind (for now) to check on his home planet, with Dallas (Quentin Plair) — just as he and Maria (Heather Hemmens) got together — tagging along. Executive producer Chris Hollier breaks down the finale and teases what would’ve happened next. How would the season have ended if this hadn’t been the last one? Chris Hollier: There was one more scene after this potentially. There was a potential scene where Liz turned around and the console melted, so she was separated and stuck with no way for him ...

A wedding, an engagement and a journey to another planet — fans got all that and more in the series finale of “Roswell, New Mexico” on Monday night. And according to showrunner Chris Hollier, a lot of the night’s events were always the plan for the pod squad — except maybe Malex’s wedding.
Don’t worry, Michael Guerin (Michael Vlamis) and Alex Manes (Tyler Blackburn) were always meant for each other. Even Blackburn told TheWrap he’d have been “pissed” if the men didn’t get the ending they deserved. And indeed, Hollier told TheWrap this week that the “Roswell” writers “always knew there was a happy ending” for the pairing.
“We’d always talked about, like, the fact that we were starting Season 4 with a proposal, we expected people would have a wedding,” Hollier explained. “So how can we surprise them with what that wedding would be? And the answer was,...

Nathan Dean as Max Evans and Jeanine Mason as Liz Ortecho in ‘Roswell, New Mexico’ season 4 episode 13
The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico season four episode 13 serves as both the season and series finale. Picking up seconds after the end of episode 12, “How It’s Going to Be“ begins with Clyde easily stopping Isobel and Max’s attack. Rosa (Amber Midthunder) concentrates on tuning in on Clyde’s frequency and manages to free herself from his restraint.
Rosa surprises Clyde by smashing him over the head with a board, which gives Max (Nathan Dean) time to prepare to use the blue flame. Unfortunately, Clyde also uses the flame and knocks everyone over before kidnapping Rosa and escaping in a car.
The #PodSquad discuss their next move and Bonnie suggests they need to destroy the portal before Clyde can use it. Michael (Michael Vlamis) thinks they should hold off on that drastic move and Max agrees.

Jeanine Mason as Liz Ortecho in ‘Roswell, New Mexico’ season 4 episode 12
The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico season four episode 12 is both the season and the series’ penultimate episode. Episode 11 ended with Clyde offering Shivani help bringing back her daughter, and episode 12 reveals she took him up on the offer.
Liz (Jeanine Mason), who’s still struggling with her addiction to the mist, concocts a new version of the mist that will return Max’s powers in just an hour. Max (Nathan Dean) explains he and Isobel discovered Shivani packed up her lab (including the pods) but left behind remnants of a formula on a board. Liz doesn’t recognize it and Max thinks it came from Clyde. Liz believes this mysterious formula might be used to remove Clyde’s brand. Clyde meets with Jones as The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico season four episode 11 opens with a flashback to their time on Oasis. Jones offers Clyde a position in his inner circle, convincing Clyde that he’ll share his enormous powers if he accepts.

Flash-forward to the present-day and Rosa (Amber Midthunder) confronts Liz (Jeanine Mason) about her erratic behavior and warns her sister that her addiction to the alien mist is going to end badly. Rosa notes Liz has moved out of Max’s place and is basically destroying her life, but Liz doesn’t care.

Roswell, New Mexico star Michael Trevino is stepping behind the camera for what he’s calling “the Avengers assembling to come together for one common goal” episode of the series. In August 8’s “Wild Wild West,” it’s up to everyone to save Liz (Jeanine Mason) after Shivani (Rehka Sharma) exposed her to the alien-power mist. As a result, Liz ends up in a mindscape set in the wild, wild west, and it soon becomes not just about saving her, but Max (Nathan Dean) as well. Trevino previews the episode (including Shiri Appleby’s appearance), talks about directing, and teases how it will all end for Kyle and his relationship with Isobel (Lily Cowles). What made this episode the right one for your TV directing debut? You did a short [Two Roads] previously. Michael Trevino: I did. I did a short film after Season 3. TV is packed with revivals and reboots, and there are plenty more coming. Too often, though, these shows falter at finding a way to stand on their own two feet, and this seems to affect dramas even more than comedies. Unexpectedly, it's The CW's sci-fi drama Roswell, New Mexico that offers a blueprint for how reboots can be at their best.
Where too many reboots justify their existence with nostalgia, Roswell, New Mexico has a genuine reason to exist. The original Roswell used its alien characters as a metaphor for teenagers feeling like they don't fit in, but the word "alien" has a totally different connotation in 2020 America, and this Roswell leans into that wholeheartedly.
Its heroine, Liz (Jeanine Mason), is Latina, daughter of an undocumented immigrant in a small community with plenty of subtle and not-so-subtle bigotry. There's a constant tension between her experiences and the experiences of the...

It's been a weird season of Roswell, New Mexico so far for Max Evans (Nathan Parsons). After dying via sacrifice in the season one finale, he's been dead for months, appearing only in nightmares had by Rosa (Amber Midthunder) and hallucinations had by Isobel (Lily Cowles). Now, he's been revived, thanks to the heart of an alien enemy and a little help from the formerly dead girl he sacrificed himself for. We all knew he'd be back eventually (he's Max Evans), but it took a while, and it certainly took a toll on both Max and Nathan. "It was definitely harder than I thought it would be," Parsons tells E! News. "First couple of months of filming was sort of...

Here’s a unique flick, unlike nearly any other film now at your multiplex (or single screens or drive-ins down south). That’s mainly because it’s a mix of several film genres (if it were a meal would it be a stew or a petite buffet). It’s a coming of age story since it’s about a young man leaving his midwestern hometown for college in sunny ‘Cal. And he meets “the girl” and begins a romance, so it’s a love story. Like the fifty-plus-year-old flick of that name, things don’t go…smoothly, so it’s a “tear-jerker”. Oh, did I mention that this college kid is a real guy? Yup, it’s a biography and a musical one at that since he’s a singer. Actually he’s one of the most popular contemporary Christian singers of the last couple of decades, so this movie...

Is Max Evans really dead?
That's been the question on the minds of Roswell, New Mexico fans ever since the first season came to a dramatic conclusion last year.
Weeks ahead of the sophomore debut, The CW has dropped the official trailer, and we have a lot of questions.
Despite leaving us hanging over a cliff wondering whether Max stages a surprise return from the dead, the trailer finds Liz confirming his death.
It's a bitter pill to swallow, but on a series filled with otherworldly twists and turns, the more likely scenario is that Nathan Parsons will reprise his role at some point.
Poor Liz has to explain to Rosa why she looks different. Rosa has not aged a day since being killed off 10 years ago, thanks in large part to her being brought back from the dead.
With Rosa being in the pod for the 10 years, it certainly...

“I’m going to explain everything to you,” Liz tells her newly resurrected sister in the extended trailer for Roswell, New Mexico‘s upcoming second season. And she has a lot to explain.
Honestly, where should she even begin? The CW drama’s first season ended with Max sacrificing himself to bring back Rosa, a favor Liz intends to repay. As she explains in the trailer, “Max gave me back the only thing that mattered to me. Now, it’s my turn.”

Ok, I'm convinced.
I didn't think it was possible, but when a show works, it works.
As someone who has been against the increasing amount of reboots hitting the air, I was prepared to write off Roswell, New Mexico as a wasted attempt to cash in on a show that is still beloved by its fans many years after it originally aired.
Thankfully, Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 1 does not pale in comparison to the original Roswell and is a solid series that perfectly encapsulates the values of a WB drama from back in the day.
It has a similar setup to the original series, but the execution is different enough to rule this a whole different show and not a reboot.

A new love story takes flight on The CW tonight!
On Roswell, New Mexico Season 1 Episode 1, Liz (Jeanine Mason) returns home after several years away.
Her first night in town is filled with some crazy twists and turns, but nothing could top getting shot, right?
The CW has dropped a new sneak peek from the reboot, and it shows Liz and Max (Nathan Parsons) in the diner, sharing a milkshake and reminiscing.
However, things take a wild turn when gunshots ring out, and Liz finds herself on the floor bleeding out.
What lengths will Max go to in order to save her?
We think it's fair to say he's going to do as much as he can to save her given that he was saying that he was thinking about what he would say to her if he ever laid eyes on her again.
Oh yes, this new drama is...

In a show with a premiere filled with awkward reunions, this one might just be the most awkward. Roswell, New Mexico, the newest series from The CW, begins just before the 10 year high school reunion of Liz (Jeanine Mason), Max (Nathan Parsons), Isobel (Lily Cowles), Maria (Heather Hemmens), Kyle (Michael Trevino), Michael (Michael Vlamis), and Alex (Tyler Blackburn), and while they've all got some history to work through, it's the last pair that might have the most of all. A remake doesn’t necessarily have to justify its existence in this, the age of too much #content, but it’s always a genuine pleasure when it nonetheless makes a great case.
“Roswell, New Mexico” is a canny blend of the two ways that its story — of aliens living on Earth and the humans who may or may not love them — has already been told. The WB’s “Roswell” was an unabashed teen soap that wrung every longing glance out of its high school protagonists. It starred a young Shiri Appleby as human heroine Liz, and while Appleby was promising from the start, the book series “Roswell” was based on (“Roswell High”) had purposefully made Liz Latina. Roswell, New Mexico is largely a carbon copy of the original, and full of faces you'll recognize.
This Roswell, New Mexico review contains spoilers.
Roswell, New Mexico Episode 1 Review
Roswell, New Mexico. It’s one of those places so iconic, so singularly famous for one specific thing that it doesn’t even warrant an explanation. Back in 1999, it was the show that launched the careers of Shiri Applebee, Katherine Heigl, Colin Hanks (not that he needed launching), and several other faces you know, even if their names are less familiar, like Nick Wechsler, Brendan Fehr, and Emilie de Ravin (Lost). And now, 20 years and a few changes later, it’s back.
Notably, Roswell, New Mexico isn’t a sequel to 1999’s Roswell. Even though everyone is roughly 10 years older, and the original show took place 10 years ago, these events--namely the inciting incidents of Liz’s death and revival and the...

Roswell, New Mexico has us thinking about our favorite alien-human romances across TV and film.
This article is presented by Roswell, New Mexico.

Roswell, New Mexico premieres in just over a month at The CW.
As such, the network is ramping up the promotional train and has unveiled a brand new poster for the series.
What it shows is the drama's core couple Liz (Jeanine Mason) and Max (Nathan Parsons) getting close, and there's a beautiful backdrop to boot.
"Make Contact" is a perfect addition to the poster because it can be interpreted in many ways what with Max being an alien.
Roswell, New Mexico is the second television adaptation of Roswell High book series by Melinda Metz.
The first TV series aired from 1999-2002, and last three seasons. Despite having a devoted fan base, it had low ratings, prompting The WB to cancel, but Upn swooped in to give the series another shot at life.
But Upn also opted to cancel it because the ratings continued to dwindle.

Roswell, New Mexico hasn't even premiered yet and we already want to decorate our home with it. E!
