On an otherwise uneventful Friday evening, about 95 million people watched a white Ford Bronco slowly driving down the 5 freeway.
The driver of the car, of course, was O.J. Simpson, the NFL star turned actor and TV broadcaster, and that day he officially was named as a murder suspect in the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
America was glued to their TV sets, with the broadcast networks breaking into their regular programing, and the lone cable news channel CNN having its star host Larry King guide viewers through the action (watch it here).
The chase and subsequent trial (“The Trial of the Century,” as declared by multiple news outlets), with its live cameras in the courtroom, became gripping must-see TV. The not-guilty verdict — handed down at 10 a.m. on a weekday — was watched live by more than 150 million people (on day one of the 1991 Gulf War,...

“The View” host Sunny Hostin revealed on the PBS documentary series “Finding Your Roots” that Nancy Grace is responsible for her stage name. Hostin’s birth name is Asunción Cummings, but she said Grace “struggled” to pronounce it on air and went ahead and changed it to “Sunny” almost immediately after Hostin told her that’s what some of her friends called her growing up. Hostin appeared alongside Grace on Court TV back in the day.
“She struggled, every take,” Hostin said (via Entertainment Weekly). “It was just so crazy. She couldn’t get it. Then she said, at the break, ‘Can I say something to you?’ I was like, ‘Sure.’ She was like, ‘Do you have another name? A nickname?’ And she just kept at it. She was basically telling me, ‘You’re very good at this, but that name is not gonna fly. You need to just go by a nickname.

Hostin brought her legal expertise to television after being invited to share her knowledge on Court TV with Grace. However, Grace tripped whenever she said Asunción and asked Hostin to change it.
“She struggled, every take,” Hostin told host Henry Louis Gates, Jr. “It was just so crazy. She couldn’t get it.”

Don Lemon has strongly denied recent accusations lodged against him, which included claims of workplace misogyny and “diva-like behaviour”.
In a new damning report from Variety, several sources alleged he had disrespected CNN co-hosts Nancy Grace on air and broadcaster Soledad O’Brien during an editorial meeting, among other things.
According to fellow colleagues, Lemon mocked Grace by mimicking her on air.
While Grace declined the outlet’s request for comment, a person close to her confirmed “she thinks he’s an ass” and that he was generally “rude, dismissive and really unfamiliar with the [news] content being discussed”.
Other witnesses spoke about a time he had allegedly argued O’Brien wasn’t Black in an editorial meeting attended by around 30 additional staffers.
He was claimed to have been upset that O’Brien was chosen to host CNN’s 2008 docuseries Black in America.

Don Lemon has denied a report accusing the longtime CNN anchor of reckless behavior and misogyny.
“The story, which is riddled with patently false anecdotes and no concrete evidence, is entirely based on unsourced, unsubstantiated, 15-year-old anonymous gossip,” a spokesperson for Lemon told TheWrap. “It’s amazing and disappointing that Variety would be so reckless.”
The report, published Wednesday, unearthed allegations originating from the cable news anchor’s sprawling career at CNN, including accusations of mocking female staffers and “diva-like” behavior, leading up to Lemon’s recent controversy after declaring that Nikki Haley was not a viable presidential candidate as the 51-year-old “isn’t in her prime.”
Citing anonymous sources, the report chronicled rising tension between Lemon and Kyra Phillips, hi co-anchor on CNN’s “Live From” weekday show in the late 2000s. It stated that a “Live From” producer and a newsroom supervisor had to pull Lemon off the...

Update: A few hours after becoming the subject of a damning report from Variety, Don Lemon has denied all allegations.
In a statement provided to The Wrap, a spokesperson for Lemon said that: “The story, which is riddled with patently false anecdotes and no concrete evidence, is entirely based on unsourced, unsubstantiated, 15-year-old anonymous gossip. It’s amazing and disappointing that Variety would be so reckless.”
Original Story Follows:
In February, longtime CNN anchor Don Lemon created a media controversy when he said on-air that Presidential candidate Nikki Haley was “past her prime.” Lemon’s statements — which included the claim that “A woman is considered to be in their prime in their 20s and 30s and maybe 40s” — resulted in the Emmy winner briefly getting benched from his gig as “CNN This Morning” co-host, and led to the anchor reportedly apologizing for his actions on a staff-wide call.

Back in 2008, Don Lemon was co-anchoring CNN’s “Live From” weekday show with Kyra Phillips, a gig that he landed after he arrived at the network two years prior from local news in Chicago. For months, tensions between the pair kept mounting. On more than one occasion, a “Live From” producer and a newsroom supervisor had to pull Lemon off the air during a commercial break because of the anchor’s provocative antics, not unlike his recent declaration that the 51-year-old Nikki Haley isn’t a viable presidential candidate because she “isn’t in her prime.” Amid the charged atmosphere, sources say Lemon disrespected colleague Nancy Grace on the air and Soledad O’Brien during an editorial meeting attended by roughly 30 staffers.

When Alexandra Dean signed on to direct “Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies” for Peacock, she had high hopes that the series would help people understand the Casey Anthony murder case, which Time magazine previously dubbed the social media trial of the century, in a new light.
Anthony, now 36, was found not guilty of murdering her two-year-old daughter Caylee during a 2011 trial that captivated the country. Anthony was charged with her daughter’s murder in 2008.
“My biggest hope for the series is that it provokes really profound conversations around how people like Casey are portrayed by the media,” Dean told Variety. “I hope it makes people think more critically about where they’re getting their information. If it’s from an outlet that covers a court case from one side and doesn’t want to hear from anyone not on their side, then they don’t have the full story.

Viewers have turned to the cable network Hln over the years for a quick-hit version of its sister, CNN; for coverage of court cases; for Robin Meade’s long-running morning news shows; and for a bevy of true-crime programs, including Nancy Grace’s primetime talk show and repeats of “Forensic Files.” What it will be recognized for over the months to come is anybody’s guess.
CNN — and, by proxy, its corporate parent, Warner Bros. Discovery — nearly gutted the cable outlet Thursday by cancelling Meade’s “Morning Express,” which has been on the air in some form or another since 2001. The company also declared that it would not longer produce new live programming for the network and that Kathleen Finch, not CNN chief Chris Licht, would take over the true-crime shows, which would be made part of another cable outlet, ID, known for similar stuff. Former CNN anchor Brian Stelter says the demise of live programming on Hln marks the end of companionship TV in an op-ed published in The Atlantic Friday.
“The demise of Hln, CNN’s 40-year-old sister station, which will stop airing original newscasts next week, deserves attention not just because it marks the end of an era but because it’s a reminder of how eras in media actually end. Before death comes obsolescence,” Stelter wrote. “Viewers tuning in for companionship may find only the faintest echo of what once was. The TV will still be on, but all the warmth is gone.”
Though Stelter notes that “Media Winter” consistently brings layoffs and cost-cutting measures across the industry — this year that list includes CNN, who recently laid off hundreds of staffers, The Washington Post, NPR and Gannett newspaper chain — he sees cutting Hln’s live programming as “fixture of cable television [that went] belly up.

Former prosecutor and TV news host Nancy Grace, who extensively covered Casey Anthony’s trial in 2011, has responded to the latest claims made in Peacock‘s new three-part docuseries Casey Anthony: Where the Truth Lies. The documentary is told from Anthony’s perspective as she talks through the infamous 2008 investigation, which saw her accused of killing her two-year-old daughter Caylee, whose remains were found near the family home in December 2008. Anthony, who originally claimed Caylee drowned in the pool, denied the murder charges and was found not guilty of first-degree murder in 2011. In the series, Anthony explains why she took 31 days to 911, claiming that she was following the directive of her father, George, who she alleges sexually abused her from ages 8 to 11. Her father has denied the abuse claims and has never been charged. Anthony also claims that George staged her daughter’s drowning to cover up his possible abuse of Caylee.

For eight weeks in the summer of 2011, the world was glued to the “social media trial of the century.” Facing the death penalty was Casey Anthony, then 25, accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, and dumping the body in a wooded area near her parents’ home in Orlando, Florida.
The circumstantial evidence against her was compelling — including a 911 call made by her mother in which she described the smell of a decomposing body in Anthony’s car — but Anthony was found not guilty of murdering her daughter.
She was sentenced to four years, one year for each lie she told police; with three years time served, she had only 10 days left in custody before walking free.
No one was more outraged by that turn of events than Nancy Grace, the prosecutor-turned-tv pundit who dubbed Anthony the “Tot Mom” and who covered the case...

Fox Weather wants to blow through your devices.
The Fox Corp. climate-news service, which got its start as a streaming app when it launched in October of last year, is not so quietly winding its way into as many platforms as it can. On Thursday, Fox Corp. and smart-tv manufacturer Vizio unveiled an expanded distribution agreement that puts Fox Weather on Vizio WatchFree+ alongside existing Fox ad-supported channels. Since its debut the app has been downloaded more than two million times.
“We grew the Fox Weather ecosystem,” says Sharri Berg, who leads Fox Weather as well as news and operations for the parent company’s TV stations. “We started as a mobile app with a light linear network on it.” Over the course of the past several months, Fox Weather has launched on venues such as Roku and Amazon; on local Fox station digi-nets: and even on the weekend schedule of the Fox Business Network.

Fox Nation, the subscription-based streaming service from Fox News Media, has debuted as an optional add-on on YouTube TV, a sign of how some broadband-video outlets are looking for new ways to reach potential customers.
Starting Tuesday, YouTube TV subscribers have the option to add Fox Nation to their YouTube TV subscription for $5.99 a month. While the service caters to conservative and right-leaning consumers, Fox has over time built up Fox Nation’s programming library so that it expands beyond politics and opinion, including documentaries, true-crime series and even movies. The service also offers Fox News’ primetime opinion shows a day after they air; programs led by Nancy Grace and Lara Logan; and a bespoke program from host Tucker Carlson.

The trial also revealed that he’d also sexually abused his daughter Alexis, who once idolized her dad so much, she went to medical school to become a physician just like him.
