When I first saw the title Viking Wolf, Vikingulven in its native Norwegian, I had visions of Norse lycanthropes raiding and pillaging their way up and down the coast. Sadly that isn’t what it’s about although it does begin with a prologue, shot like a silent film for some reason, showing a raiding party under the command of Grim Gudbrand storming an abbey.
The monks warn them against going into a locked room and assuming it to be filled with treasure, smash down the door and find a snarling red-eyed wolf cub. Of course, they take it with them, and by the time their longship returns home, it’s the only thing left alive on it.

Viking Wolf, billed as Norway’s first werewolf movie, delivers as promised. This recent Netflix acquisition doesn’t mislead its audience; there is definitely a wild lycan on the loose in a small Norwegian town. However, Stig Svendsen’s movie doesn’t have the typical origin found in these kinds of stories; the werewolf myth here has been adapted to better fit its Scandinavian environment. The end result is a unique, if not flawed new addition to the pack.
Despite its cheesy title, Viking Wolf (originally Vikingulven) is a serious movie. It takes the trademarks of modern Scandi-noir media and applies it to this creature-feature. In the story, a teenage city transplant named Thale Berg (Elli Rhiannon Müller Osbourne) moves to a place called Nybø after her father passed away. His death has affected the main character’s relationship with her mother (Liv Mjönes), and that tension plays a significant role in Thale’s fate.

Wiking Wolf (Vikingulven) is a horror movie directed by Stig Svendsen starring Liv Mjönes, Marius Lien and Arthur Hakalahti. The script is written by Stig Svendsen, Espen Aukan and Jannicke Systad Jacobsen.
As is the case with Trol, this movie is another take on the werewolf theme returning it to its Viking origins and, as in Godzilla we go back to the source of the myth to return to the origins.
It is impossible to not be reminded of American Werewolf, in London or Paris… but this time in a small Norwegian village.
And, sure, miss those other movies a little.
Storyline
A girl in a party with her friends witnesses a cruel murder by an unidentified creature. Nobody can imagine what it was.

Click here to read our french "Elevator" movie review, directed by Stig Svendsen with Christopher Backus, Anita Briem, John Getz starring. When nine partygoers find themselves trapped 50 floors above Manhattan with a bomb, they are forced to set aside their differences and learn to cooperate. But resentments run deep, and each character has a motive that could doom the survival of all. With issues of racism, greed, war, politics and infidelity converging in one tiny space, Elevator offers a new perspective on terrorism, and raises questions about who the real criminals are in a world where financial markets can be so easily manipulated by a powerful few. The message is powerful, and the suspense unbearable. How far would you go to survive?...

From my experience, horror films are always the most interesting but least attended films at smaller film festivals as festival audiences seem to be more interested in stories about losing your virginity than werewolves and zombies. However, two venues in Telluride, Colorado hope to serve that small group of dedicated art-house horror fans with three days of horror films from around the world at the 3rd annual Telluride Horror Show.
Below is the list of films scheduled to screen at the Telluride Horror Show, which takes place on October 12, 13, and 14, 2012.

Nine people trapped in a lift facing death? Is this M. Knight Shyamalan’s Devil? Nope this is Elevator. A low-budget genre flick that does more with its limited resources than Devil ever did. A slow-burning, tense thriller that both knows, and plays with, genre conventions, the film sees nine people – Henry Barton (whose cocktail party they are all attending), his precocious granddaughter, two office executives, a glamorous TV news presenter, a pregnant woman, a nervous pensioner, the evening’s comic entertainer and a bodyguard – trapped in a lift after Barton’s granddaughter presses the emergency stop button as a practical joke on the claustrophobic, and obnoxious, comedian. After suffering through John Erick Dowdle’s 2010 supernatural thriller “Devil”, the idea of spending yet another cinematic adventure with a group of people stuck on an elevator doesn’t seem too appealing. However, try as I might, I can’t seem to make myself not want to see Stig Svendsen’s upcoming horror flick “Elevator”, which is co-produced by the good folks behind “Dead Snow”. Considering how much I adore the aforementioned zombie opus, it’s hard for me to formulate reasons not to investigate this title properly once it finds distribution here in the States. The embedded trailer suggests good things, but then again, so did the countless clips for “Devil”. I will tap my chin thoughtfully until it arrives. Via Twitch function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.springboard.gorillanation.com/storage/xplayer/yo033.swf", "mplayer", "590", "375", "8", "#000000"); so.addParam("wmode","transparent"); so.addParam("swliveconnect", "true"); so.addParam("allowscriptaccess", "always"); so.

It is a new indie thriller co-produced between the USA and Norway - with the Norwegian side including one of the producers of Dead Snow - with the film shot in La with all post work done in Norway.
