Last year was mostly about the Smiths. Jada Pinkett Smith’s memoir ‘Worthy’ gave birth to a storm of controversies that just kept popping up here and there for most of 2023.
When Jada called Tupac her soulmate we were sure all hell was going to break lose and we silently waited for the drama to start. Instead we got Will Smith on the yacht video – that was hilarious, seriously – and Will Smith showing up to support her book release, despite her confessions that they haven’t been a couple for years.
With everything we learned last year about the Smiths, how are they navigating their relationship and moving forward in 2024? Will Smith has answers for us.

During a recent Emmys FYC conversation in Atlanta with Bmf showrunner Heather Zuhlke, stars Demetrius “Lil Meech” Flenory Jr., Da’Vinchi, Michole Briana White and Russell Hornsby — who respectively play Big Meech, Terry, and Flenory matriarch and patriarch Lucille and Charles — and executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, who had been less active with the network in recent years after several fallouts, was full of pride and commentary about the Starz drama’s current success and future plans.
There’s no denying that Jackson putting his hip hop fame and street cred behind Power, the series essentially about a drug kingpin named Ghost (Omari Hardwick) who wanted to get out the game and become a respectable businessman, changed the premium network’s fortune. Power reportedly increased Starz’s subscribers base by as much as 40 percent.
From that came three successful spinoffs — Power Book II: Ghost; Power Book III: Raising Kanan and Power Book IV: Force.

Dua Lipa is schooling Saturday Night Live on the bad blood between Kendrick Lamar and Drake.
During a local news segment sketch, the “Dance The Night Away” singer appeared as a culture critic Wanda Weems to catch audiences up to speed on all the jabs the two rappers have taken at each other in diss tracks over the past few days.
But, as it turns out, Good Morning Greenville‘s culture reporter isn’t quite so tapped in.
“One clue on the song ‘Euphoria,’ when Kendrick describes Drake as Canadian, that’s because Drake is from Toronto,” she says, stating an obvious fact about the “Hotline Bling” rapper.
She continues, “And he calls Drake ‘Crodie,’ which is a term used by the Crips, which according to Wikipedia is an alliance of street gangs based in Southern California.”
While none of her insight is much more helpful than that, things take...

And round and round we go. Drake has fired back at Kendrick Lamar with a new diss track called “Family Matters.”
Over the course of the seven-minute track, Drake makes several unsubstantiated claims about Lamar, including that he physically assaulted his longtime partner, Whitney Alford. Drake also suggests that one of Lamar’s children was actually fathered by longtime producer Dave Free, and that Lamar encouraged Tupac’s estate to file a cease and desist against Drake over the diss track “Taylor Made Freestyle.”
“Family Matters” also sees Drake go after some of his other hip-hop foes, including Rick Ross, The Weeknd, A$AP Rocky, Future, and Metro Boomin.
For those keeping score, “Family Matters” marks Drake’s third diss track aimed at Lamar, following “Taylor Made Freestyle” and “Push Ups (Drop & Give Me 50).” Meanwhile, Lamar has dropped two diss tracks of his own: “euphoria” and “6:16 in LA.”

Kendrick Lamar has dropped a new Drake diss track, “6:16 in LA,” just days after heating up their feud with “euphoria.” Stream it below.
The title of “6:16 in LA” likely refers to Father’s Day, which falls on June 16th this year, digging back into one of Drake’s sore spots of being exposed as an allegedly absentee father. At the same time, Kendrick describes being a father to his own kids with the lyrics, “Put my children to sleep, with a prayer, then close my eyes, definition of peace.”
Adding another layer, Variety has confirmed Taylor Swift’s frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff co-produced the diss track, winking at Drake’s name-drop of the pop star on previous diss track “Push Ups.”
On the track, Kendrick preys further on Drake’s insecurities, claiming his team isn’t loyal. “Have you ever thought that Ovo was workin’ for me?” Kendrick raps.

A hater’s well never runs dry, and Kendrick Lamar’s is overflowing. The rapper started this week off by letting Drake know just how much he hates him on the single “Euphoria,” released without warning on Tuesday morning. Drake knew the response was coming — in fact, he released two back-to-back singles urging Lamar to get in the booth. “Euphoria,” as it turns out, was only the beginning. On Friday morning, the rapper came back for more with another surprise release, “6:16 in LA.”
Rolling Stone confirmed that Jack Antonoff worked on the track.

There are a few lines of thought surrounding the ongoing Drake v. the World rap feud that have become accepted as all but sacred facts. For one, all of this is supposedly fun. Spotify, the multi-billion-dollar business that reported a quarterly profit last week — in part, thanks to laying off 17 percent of its staff ahead of the holidays last year— rented out billboards in Times Square declaring that rap is a “competitive sport.” This was presumably their comment on the months-long saga that began with the release of Future and...

One of the major themes of Kendrick Lamar’s new Drake diss “euphoria” is the accusation that his rap foe is a “scam artist” and “a master manipulator and habitual liar too.” As it turns out, the seemingly jumbled audio in the intro lays the groundwork by sampling dialogue from the 1978 film The Wiz.
Shortly after the song’s release on Tuesday, multiple fans clipped the brief sample and played the line backward, revealing it to be dialogue from the movie in which The Wiz (played by Richard Pryor) says, “Everything they say about me is true.” Scroll down for the reversed audio below.
For full context, Pryor’s line is taken from a scene in which his character is exposed to be Herman Smith, a washed-up politician from Atlantic City. Admitting to the deception, he says, “Everything they say about me is true. I’m a phony.”

Kendrick Lamar has hit back at Drake with “euphoria,” his response to the latter rapper’s recent diss tracks “Push Ups” and “Taylor Made Freestyle.” Stream it below.
Broken up into three parts, “euphoria” begins with a laidback beat in which a relaxed Kendrick calls out Drake for being fake and “a scam artist with the hopes of being accepted.”
“The famous actor we once knew is lookin’ paranoid, now it’s spiraling,” Kendrick scoffs, before accusing Drake of being a liar on multiple levels. “Fabricate stories on the family front, ’cause you heard Mr. Morale/ A pathetic master manipulator, I can smell the tales on you now/ You not a rap artist, you a scam artist with the hopes of being accepted.”
Pointedly, he continues, “Know you a master manipulator, and a bitch, you a liar too/ But don’t tell no lie ’bout me, and I won’t tell truths ’bout you.

FKA twigs has proactively taken AI into her own hands to develop a deepfake version of herself to handle fan interactions while she focuses on music, Rolling Stone reports.
“In the past year, I have developed my own deepfake version of myself that is not only trained in my personality but also can use my exact tone of voice to speak many languages,” FKA twigs shared in written testimony ahead of her appearance before Senate on Tuesday (April 30th).
Praising the technology as a “highly valuable” tool “when under the control of the artist,” the British musician continued, “I will be engaging my AI twigs later this year to extend my reach and handle my online social media interactions, whilst I continue to focus on my art from the comfort and solace of my studio.”

The defense of Young Thug began Tuesday with the rapper’s attorney, Brian Steel, explaining trap music to grandmothers.
“He is not running a criminal enterprise on Cleveland Avenue to gather money and power,” Steel says, arguing that by 2014, the rapper, whose legal name is Jeffery Williams, was a superstar who wouldn’t have had anything to gain and everything to lose by running on the street. “He is not sitting there telling people to kill people. He doesn’t need their money. He’s worth tens of millions of dollars.

It might or might not be true, as Nick Broomfield declares in his new feature documentary, that “most people today” haven’t heard of Brian Jones. If it’s true of most young music fans, then a) yikes and b) The Stones and Brian Jones is here to bridge the generation gap. The Magnolia release, which is receiving a one-night theatrical showcase 10 days before its Nov. 17 general release, joins an ever-expanding pack of doc portraits exploring boomer musicians who led the rock revolution of the ’60s and ’70s.
Broomfield’s earlier takes on pop culture giants — among them Kurt Cobain, Whitney Houston, Leonard Cohen and Biggie and Tupac — have ranged from basic to divisive to lurid. In a lot of ways, North West is a normal kid. She likes going shopping and putting on fake fashion shows in her little sister's closet. She's discovered Tupac. She loves basketball, which, she makes clear, is a "lifestyle" for her, not a hobby. But as we all know, she isn't your average 10-year-old. This is made all too evident by her recently released first solo magazine cover, for i-d.
West, who is the oldest child of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, offered incredible quotes in her interview for the magazine's fall/winter 2023 issue. Most remarkable, however, is West's confidence throughout. Take, for example, her knack for performing. Does she get that from her family? West credits her dad a "little bit," but says it's "mostly from me though."
When asked to describe her life in three words, West says, "Blessed, awesome, cool." How about herself in three words? "The Best Ever,...

In early 1991, 20-year-old Tupac Shakur was torn between ambitions of acting and rapping, and struggling to catch a break on both fronts. He had studied theater at the Baltimore School for the Arts and toured with the west coast hip-hop collective Digital Underground, but acting opportunities were scarce and he had yet to finish the demo tape that would launch him to stardom. His luck would turn when Digital Underground’s road manager, Sleuth, received a call from Cara Lewis, the group’s booking agent at William Morris. A film director named Ernest Dickerson was looking for actors for a movie called Juice and they invited Money-b, a fellow member of the collective, to audition. Dickerson had earned acclaim for his work as Spike Lee’s director of photography on a run of films, including She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, and Jungle Fever.

Last night Edo Nwodim performed as Jada Pinkett Smith on SNL’s “Weekend Update” segment. True to inspiration, Nwodim’s take on Smith just could not stop talking about her “brutiful” marriage to Will Smith and, of course, her alleged soulmate Tupac. After host Michael Che asked why the Smiths don’t just divorce, Nwodim joked, “Divorce is not an option. No, no no. I have principles, Michael. If we got divorced, he could mess around and end up happy!”

“Saturday Night Live” took aim at Jim Jordan’s (Mike Day) failed bid for Speaker of the House, with the Republican being consoled by George Santos (Bowen Yang), Lauren Boebert (Chloe Fineman) and Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson).
“How did I lose? This is chaos,” Day’s Jordan says. “Some of us are here to actually serve the American people. All I want to do is get Congress back to work so I can shut it down again.”
Moments later, he’s visited by Santos, who has come to cheer him up with a baby in hand.
“I just wanted to say how sorry I am. But I want you to know I voted for you and get this, so did Shawna Loggins,” Yang said.
“Who’s that?,” Day replies, to which Yang responds: “Also me.”

Since the arrest and indictment of Duane “Keffe D” Davis for the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, people have speculated about whether the Los Angeles Police Department will be reinvigorated to pursue an investigation into the other great tragedy of that era in hip-hop — the 1997 murder of the Notorious B.I.G. But former LAPD detective Greg Kading, who was the lead detective of an interagency task force created in 2006 to investigate Biggie’s murder, tells Rolling Stone that he feels the murder was likely the result of a smaller conspiracy that would...

Suge Knight won’t be testifying against Duane “Keefe D” Davis in the Tupac Shakur murder case, despite being the driver of the car in which the late rapper was fatally shot.
The Death Row Records co-founder gave his reaction to the recent arrest in an interview with TMZ from California state prison, saying he wouldn’t take the stand if called upon to testify. In addition, Knight said the shooter was not Davis’ nephew, the late Orlando Anderson — contrary to popular belief.
After expressing his “surprise” at the news that Davis was arrested and charged with murder, Knight revealed that they had a childhood history. “Me and Keefe D played on the same Pop Warner football team,” he said. “And whatever circumstances — if he had an involvement with anything, if he didn’t have an involvement with anything, I wouldn’t wish somebody going to prison on my worst enemy.

Tupac Shakur has been gone for nearly three decades, but his popularity has never waned thanks to family, friends and collaborators like Jamal Joseph and Allen Hughes, who are behind FX’s Emmy-nominated docuseries Dear Mama.
