Elevated horror can be wonderful. Packed with subtext, visually stunning, often emotionally devastating with standout performances across the board, the subgenre is full of greats. But sometimes you just want exploding bodies.
If this is you, with Abigail you have come to the right place. From directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who are part of the collective called Radio Silence, this is a genre mashup which begins with an Oceans 11-style set up where the loot is a little girl our gang of professional criminals will be holding for ransom. But when they get to the vast mansion where she is to spend the night, something is very off, and things head into Dusk Til Dawn territory. This lot have very definitely come to the wrong place.
Radio Silence have been occupied with the last two Scream movies of late, but Abigail is much closer in tone to 2019s Ready or Not.

Plot: 1908. Chief (Mario Van Peebles) returns from years of hiding in Mexico to claim stolen reparations gold hidden in the hills of Montana but is chased by Angel (William Mapother), whose rationale to the gold leaves a trail of dead bodies.
Review: Mario Van Peebles is in the enviable position of being a writer, director and actor who can make the kinds of movies he wants with the people he wants. He was able to gain recognition on his own merit, outside of his father’s work, as he appeared in films like Heartbreak Ridge with Clint Eastwood, Ali with Will Smith, as well as cult classics like Gunmen which co-stars Christopher Lambert. He would work with him again in Lambert’s franchise sequel, Highlander: The Final Dimension. Plus, Van Peebles would gain acclaim as a director with the films he’s pulled double duty on — such titles as New Jack City...

The next chapter in the mythic journey of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), following the murder of his father Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) in “Dune,” is to join the Fremen tribe’s fight for survival on the remote desert planet Arrakis. In “Dune: Part Two,” Paul must learn the ways of the Fremen, who make their harsh windswept environment their home by using it as their camouflage, weapon, and, yes, transportation system.
For director Denis Villeneuve, growing up reading author Frank Herbert’s description of the Fremen riding sandworms was the coolest thing he could imagine, but when it came to adapting these scenes to the big screen, the director realized just how much of his imagination would be required to fill in the holes of Herbert’s description.
“I had to imagine how a human being could jump on a worm, because it’s very evasive in the book,” Villeneuve told IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast.

When "Pet Sematary" was published in 1983, it came with a killer marketing hook: it was billed as the book that was so scary it even frightened its author, Stephen King. Whether or not that was true was immaterial; it was too good to ignore — Stephen King, the master of horror, had penned something that scared even him! To hear King tell it, which he has numerous times over the years, he found the book so disturbing — particularly its ultra-dark subject matter — that he stuffed it in a drawer, only to later pull it out to fill a contractual obligation. I'm a big Stephen King fan, and "Pet Sematary" is my favorite King novel. My first encounter with the material wasn't the book, though — it was Mary Lambert's 1989 film adaptation.
I was six in 1989, which is probably way too young to watch "Pet Sematary." But watch it I did, and folks,...

For a while there Miranda Lambert couldn’t lose at the CMA Awards. But it’s been five years since she last took the stage as Female Vocalist of the Year. Will she return to the winner’s circle in 2022?
SEEMiranda Lambert songs ranked: 18 greatest hits by the CMA Award-nominated artist
As of this writing Lambert gets leading odds of 11/2 to win Female Vocalist for the first time since 2017. She’s backed by 20 of the Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s CMA Awards and 17 of the All-Star Top 24 who had the best scores when you combine the last two years’ CMA results. Strengthening her case is the fact that she’s also nominated for Entertainer of the Year and Album of the Year (“Palomino”), signs that she’s had a strong year that the Country Music Association would be inclined to reward her for. And we know they love her.

Jennifer Hudson and fellow American Idol alum Adam Lambert busted out a serious high-brow, deep cut duet on The Jennifer Hudson Show: the classic aria from Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot, “Nessun dorma.”
As Lambert explains in a brief interview before the performance, he learned the song in an opera course he took in high school, describing the class as “really good training,” similar to a dancer studying a bit of ballet. And though he learned a lot, he mostly left that world behind.
Then, this summer, Lambert and Queen were touring Italy,...

After four days of deliberation — and more than 25 years of questions — a California jury found Paul Flores guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Kristin Smart. His father, Ruben Flores, was found not guilty of being an accessory to the crime.
The decision came after an emotional closing argument on Sept. 28 from San Luis Obispo County Deputy District Attorney Chris Peuvrelle who told the jury: “It’s been 1,370 Sundays since [Kristin’s parents] Stan and Denise Smart waited for that phone call — the phone call that would never come.” He then pointed...

Say what you will about The Voice, but season two's RaeLynn has done pretty well for herself.
The now-20-year-old’s debut single "God Made Girls" has had a polarizing impact on country music since its June 2014 release. The Top 20 track has been certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, selling more than 500,000 units, but not without stirring up a bit of controversy in the process.
"It's just a sweet song about the connection between guys and girls," RaeLynn (real name: Rachael Lynn Woodward) tells ETonline in this week's installment of Behind the Hit.
Watch: Hunter Hayes Comes Full Circle With 'Invisible': Behind the Hit
"Somebody's gotta make him get dressed up, give him a reason to wash that truck. Somebody's gotta teach him how to dance, so God made girls," RaeLynn croons on the single, which has been regarded by some as anti-feminist. The song inspired a sharply-worded blog post on Jezebel, which declared...

Las Vegas -- More than a few people have suggested to the producers of the Academy of Country Music Awards that they extend the broadcast delay for Sunday night's show – just in case.
With Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan co-hosting, everyone expects the unexpected – and several off-color, unscripted moments – as country music's biggest cut-ups collide on stage. A recent interview in Nashville with the two, who've given themselves the celebrity couple name "Bluke," veered wildly from a discussion of Bryan's unworthiness to host to crude jokes and Taylor Swift's fans.
"I would tell him to be prepared for the onslaught of hatred that will come from Taylor Swift's fan base if you say any sort of a joke or if she's any part of a punch line in the monologue," Shelton said when asked what advice he'd give Bryan. "By the way, you're getting all those jokes this year.

The March 17th edition of Entertainment Tonight aired a segment discussing the new Glee "controversy" which they phrased as "Is Glee too sexy?" And what images did Et show to demonstrate how controversial the topic is?
If you guessed Kurt and Blaine sweetly kissing, you're right! Et also showed Brittany and Santana kissing on a bed. Because you know gay teens kissing is "wild" as the reporter put it, and adds "fuel" to the fire as to whether "Glee is too racy." At one point they note that "... from teenage drinking and stripping to a lesbian relationship, the show has generated criticism that it is sometimes inappropriate for its timeslot."

Nashville, Tenn. — Miranda Lambert proclaimed 2010 the best year of her life. After hauling in seven Academy of Country Music Awards nominations, 2011 isn't looking so bad either.
Lambert, joined by Ronnie Dunn on Tuesday morning to announce the nominees at The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, received her first Acm entertainer of the year nomination and will defend her 2010 top female vocalist win, along with nods for song and single of the year. Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown Band were next with five nominations each.
Dunn summed up Lambert's run with two words: "She's smokin'."

After her engagement to Blake Shelton and the launch of her first headlining tours, she received a record nine nominations at the rival Country Music Association Awards and went on to win three.

"American Idol's" Hollywood Week is essentially over -- which means the Top 24 has been chosen. Do not keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled because most names have leaked.
Between Joe's Place blog, Vote for the Worst and Mj's Big Blog, it seems there are 20 of the Top 24 out there already, all of the boys and eight of the girls. We've only seen a few of the Top 24 so far, but the ones we have seen have their audition city after their names (Ben Honeycutt we may not have actually seen in Atlanta, but that's where he auditioned).
