- Elected as a Republican to the United States Senate by special election in November, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. Assumed office on 4 January 1945, after completion of his term as Governor. Served in the Senate from 4 January 1945 to 3 January 1967.
- His great-grandfather and namesake, Leverett Saltonstall (1783-1845), served in the US House of Representatives from Massachusetts, 5 December 1838 - 3 March 3, 1843. His first election was also a special election caused by resignation.
