Writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile is aiming for an October 18th theatrical release date – and with that date just six months away, Paramount decided to start building the hype for Smile 2 during their panel at CinemaCon today. They showed a teaser trailer to the people who attended their panel, and in the audience was JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek!
Lance describes what he saw in this teaser: “Story appears to be set around a Taylor Swift type of mega-star artist (Naomi Scott) who gets sucked into the curse of Smile. The sequel has a bigger budget and slicker look, seems to be bigger in scope. There was a very cool scene where a crowd of people under control of the entity are in a tight backstage hallway chasing Naomi Scott, all of the smiling in that creepy way. Plot-wise, it doesn’t give much away.

From December through February, we followed the progress as writer/director Parker Finn assembled the cast for a sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. The cast includes Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels, Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You, Rosemarie DeWitt of La La Land and the Poltergeist remake, Dylan Gelula of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Dream Scenario, Raúl Castillo of Army of the Dead and Knives Out, Miles Gutierrez-Riley of The Wilds and On The Come Up, and Kyle Gallner (Red State), reprising the role he played in the first movie. The film is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date, so we knew it had to be going to production soon, if it wasn’t already filming – and now Gage has confirmed that production is already underway.

Dylan Gelula may be best known for playing the role of Xanthippe Voorhees in 13 episodes of the Netflix series Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt… but since I haven’t gotten around to watching that show yet, where I know her from is the recent Nicolas Cage movie Dream Scenario, where her character has a very memorable interaction with Cage. Since Gelula’s section of the movie is also the part that sticks with me more than any other, I’m glad to hear (via Deadline) that she has been cast in writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here) – a project we’re referring to as Smile 2 until we hear otherwise. The film is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date, so they need to get this one into production very soon.

Killer hogs will be unleashed in the upcoming survival horror movie Feral, coming soon from Australian director Jesse O’Brien (Two Heads Creek) and currently in pre-production.
Caitlin Stasey and Dougray Scott star in the upcoming creature feature.
In Feral…
“Stranded on a remote highway, a father and his estranged daughter struggle to survive against a pack of merciless feral hogs that begin hunting them in the middle of a state-wide dust storm.”
Addam Bramich and George S. Mahaffrey wrote the screenplay.
Altitude Films is handling sales on Feral.
In addition to his work as a director, Jesse O’Brien is also a visual effects artist who most recently worked as a visual effects coordinator on the high concept dinosaur movie 65. He also worked on Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile and George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing.

We’ve seen a couple casting announcements for writer/director Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), which is aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and yesterday we learned that Lukas Gage of The White Lotus and You is in the cast as well… and when seeing those announcements, I could only wonder, “Where is Kyle Gallner?” A genre regular, Gallner had a role in Smile, and his character made it through the whole movie. So why wasn’t his presence in Smile 2 being confirmed? Well, thankfully, now it has. The Wrap reports that Gallner will be reprising the role of police detective Joel in the film. Also joining the cast is Rosemarie DeWitt, whose previous credits include La La Land...

Writer/director Parker Finn is gearing up to head into production on a sequel to his 2022 horror film Smile (read our review Here, watch the movie Here), aiming for an October 18, 2024 theatrical release date. Last month, it was announced that Naomi Scott of Aladdin and Charlie’s Angels has been cast in Smile 2, and now she has a co-star. I first saw Gage in the Blumhouse horror production Into the Dark: Midnight Kiss.
Details on the characters Scott and Gage will be playing in Smile 2 have not been revealed. Plot details are also being kept under wraps.
Smile was based on Finn’s short film Laura Hasn’t Slept (watch it Here), which won the Special Jury Recognition Prize in SXSW’s Midnight Short category.

2022's "Smile" was a sleeper hit, but audiences weren't sleeping well after watching that scary experience.
The film follows Rose (Sosie Bacon), a therapist who witnesses hysterical patient Laura (Caitlin Stasey) kill herself while brandishing a sinister smile. Soon, Rose sees other people wearing the grin and promising her she'll die in a week. Our heroine realizes that she's the latest link in a chain of demonic serial killings; her curse is spread by trauma, and unless she wants to kill someone and traumatize an onlooker, she must confront her own past.
"Smile" is an underdog success story worthy of Hollywood. On a production budget of only $17 million, the movie grossed $217 million, becoming the biggest original horror movie of 2022 in a year filled with successes for the genre. The film had originally been slated for a Paramount+ release but was moved to theaters after positive test screenings.

FX Mayans M.C. season five episode nine – the series’ penultimate episode – serves up one of the most devastating deaths of its entire run…thus far. No one is safe as Ez continues to wage war with the Sons of Anarchy.
Episode nine, “I Must Go in Now For the Fog is Rising,” begins with Bottles (Alex Barone) and Guero (Andrew Jacobs) silent as they ride back to town in the back of a stranger’s pickup truck. Witnessing the destruction of Santo Padre’s cookhouse at the Broken Saints ranch weighs heavy on their minds as they head back to the clubhouse.
Sofia (Andrea Cortés) wakes and leaves Ez (Jd Pardo) in bed with Sally when suddenly Sally barks in alarm. Ez grabs his gun, responding to pounding on his door.

FX’s Mayans M.C. season five episode seven says goodbye to two major, longtime players as we head into the final stretch of episodes. But it’s the gut-wrenching deaths of two key Mayans M.C. characters that make episode seven so heartbreaking.

Hank (Frankie Loyal) informs Ez, Angel (Clayton Cardenas), and Bishop (Michael Irby) – the inner circle – that Creeper told him there’s a rat in the clubhouse. Someone in jail told Creeper, and Creeper believes it. So does Hank.

Fuck it. Once I sent Naomi [McPherson] and Jo [Maskin] the demo they really took the cockiness in the lyric and vocal performance and carried it to the extreme with the production of the track.

Stars: Sosie Bacon, Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Robert Weigert, Caitlin Stasey, Kal Penn, Rob Morgan, Gillian Zinser | Written and Directed by Parker Finn
Sosie Bacon (daughter of Kevin) plays a therapist who believes she’s being haunted by a sinister curse in this chilling horror from debut writer-director Parker Finn. The plot may be overly familiar, but Smile scores highly when it comes to scares and atmosphere and is likely to become a word-of-mouth hit.
Bacon plays Dr Rose Cotter, an emergency psych ward therapist who has successfully compartmentalised her own trauma with regard to a family tragedy. One day, a terrified young woman (Kindred Spirits’ Caitlin Stasey) appears in her office, relating a story about how she saw a man commit suicide right in front of her, and ever since then she’s been pursued by a sinister entity who smiles at her from the bodies of other people.

Smile is a true rags-to-riches story of indie filmmaking. Parker Finn‘s short, Laura Hasn’t Slept, premiered at SXSW, where it won the Special Jury Award and caught the attention of Paramount. They developed it as a feature with the intention of going straight to streaming, but test screening reactions were so strong that they pivoted to a theatrical release. It went on to become the highest grossing horror film of the year with over 200 million worldwide.
The movie’s home video release includes an audio commentary by Finn (complete with commentary subtitles!), among other extras. The first-time filmmaker discusses his intentions behind several creative choices, from storytelling to camera movement.
Here are six things I learned from the Smile commentary….
1. Caitlin Stasey reprises her role from the short

Writer/director Parker Finn’s horror film Smile left the door wide open for a sequel – and given that the Paramount release earned over 200 million at the global box office, you have to imagine that the studio has already been asking for a sequel. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Finn confirmed that Smile was originally going to skip theatres and go right to Paramount+ until it scored well at a test screening, and discussed how he would approach making a sequel. If one were to be made.
When asked if he has thought about making a Smile sequel that picks up right where the first movie left off, Finn said, “I do think that there is still a lot of interesting stuff to explore in the world of Smile. There certainly are stones that I left unturned by design. And then there are other things that I, at one point or another,...

Nobody is smiling more than filmmaker Parker Finn these days.
Finn knows full well that his feature directorial debut, Smile, has had a charmed run. Originally green lit to be a Paramount+ exclusive, the Sosie Bacon-led horror movie about a curse that reveals itself in the form of a smile has defied the odds at every turn, culminating in a theatrical box office run of nearly 216 million on a 17-million budget. The decision to forego Paramount+ and release the film theatrically was mostly informed by the first test screening that occurred three months into post-production.
“They always warn you ahead of time that horror routinely scores lower than other genres, and horror films that have the mean tone that Smile has score even lower than that, so they were prepared to look at it through that lens,” Finn tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Every year brings us at least one horror sleeper hit that no one saw coming, and in 2022 Smile is probably the top contender for that title. Released on Sept. 30, the debut horror feature from writer/director Parker Finn has earned an astounding 216 million worldwide as of press time, whic his against a budget of just 17 million. This means Paramount Pictures execs have been grinning ear-to-ear about this movie ever since its arrival.
Finn himself is amazed at the response to the film, telling Den of Geek, “There was certainly no way to anticipate any of this on my end. I set out to make the best film that I could, the one that I really wanted to see. Seeing audiences connect with it and embrace it the way they have has been just an incredibly surreal experience. Parker Finn's "Smile" has made scary good money at the box office. Officially declared the biggest original horror movie of the year, it has crossed the 200 million mark and far surpassed its 17 million budget. After that kind of success, Finn is looking at a bright (and horrific) future in the industry. There's already been chatter about a sequel! But while that lies further down the road, Finn has opted to reflect on where it all began. "Smile" might be the title that you know but before the grinning monster made its debut, the ideas of this story existed in a completely different context. Just two years ago, Parker Finn directed a short film with a very familiar premise.
Before Smile, There Was Laura Hasn't Slept

Originally made for Paramount+, Parker Finn‘s Smile was instead released into theaters and has scared up an incredible 215 million worldwide to date, a massive success for Paramount that’s sure to jumpstart Finn’s career here in the horror industry. But where did it all begin for the filmmaker? It was back in 2019 when Finn made the short film that became Smile.
Titled Laura Hasn’t Slept, that 11-minute short will be available on Smile‘s Blu-ray, and it has also been uploaded to YouTube by the official Paramount Entertainment Australia account.
Finn explains, “Laura Hasn’t Slept premiered at South by Southwest in 2020, and that’s where Paramount first saw it. This is the origin of everything that became Smile.”
Caitlin Stasey (Kindred Spirits) and Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects) star in Laura Hasn’t Slept, which begins with Stasey’s Laura explaining a recurring series of dreams to her therapist.

I was lucky enough to be able to sit down with the writer/director of Smile, Parker Finn, and ask him all about his film’s massive success. Because there are few films that have come along and taken the horror world by storm like Smile has, remaining a box office contender well after its opening, in an era where films simply die off. I also grilled him about whether or not we’d be getting a sequel.

Fresh off playing a pivotal role in the horror film Smile (watch it Here), which earned over 200 million at the global box office, Caitlin Stasey has signed on to play the lead in the horror thriller Devil Inside. Stasey is joined in the cast by Lou Taylor Pucci (Evil Dead 2013) and Ryan Kwanten (Glorious). Devil Inside is currently in pre-production, and is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2023.
Directed by Jonathan auf Der Heide (Van Diemen’s Land), who also wrote the screenplay with Tom Holloway, Devil Inside is described as being in the vein of 28 Days Later and It Comes at Night – and Variety even used the dreaded “elevated” label when covering the movie, saying it’s “pitched as an elevated genre film”.

Odin’s Eye Entertainment announced today that Smile‘s Caitlin Stasey and Evil Dead‘s Lou Taylor Pucci have joined the cast of Jonathan auf Der Heide’s horror Devil Inside, Bloody Disgusting learned.
In the vein of 28 Days Later and It Comes at Night, the film explores the ‘what if’ question of a cross-species contagion, in this case from a Tasmanian Devil, the last of the marsupial carnivores.
The duo star alongside “True Blood” and Precious actor Ryan Kwanten.
In the film, “Stasey plays the role of Eva, a young virologist, who helps the local park ranger (Kwanten) research the Tasmanian Devil Facial Tumour Disease – a contagious cancer that has wiped out nearly 90 of the population.
“But when her husband, Alex (Pucci), is bitten by a sickly stray dog, Eva suspects the virus has mutated across species and is causing violent outbursts in the hosts.

“Smile” star Caitlin Stasey and Lou Taylor Pucci have joined the cast of Jonathan auf Der Heide’s upcoming horror-thriller film “Devil Inside.” They join the previously announced Ryan Kwanten.
Pitched as an elevated genre film in the vein of “28 Days Later” and “It Comes at Night,” the picture explores the ‘what if’ question of a cross-species contagion, in this case from a Tasmanian Devil, the last of the marsupial carnivores.
Stasey is fresh from Paramount’s 200 million-grossing hit “Smile” and is also known for her genre work on “I, Frankenstein” and “Tomorrow When the War Began.” Pucci won the Sundance Jury Prize and the Berlin Silver Bear for “Thumbsucker” and was star of the Sam Raimi-produced “Evile Dead” in 2013.

This post contains spoilers for "Smile."
Parker Finn served up a slice of fried gold this year with his smash-hit horror film, "Smile." The Sosie Bacon, Kyle Gallner, Caitlin Stasey, and Jessie T. Usher-starring film centers on a young psychologist who is plagued with horrific and unexplainable visions, often in the form of someone smiling at her, after witnessing the traumatic death of one of her patients. "Smile" is the most financially successful original horror film of 2022, and feels like the missing piece of the "domino-effect curse" trilogy of "The Ring" and "It Follows."
Parker Finn first concocted the idea with his equally creepy short film, "Laura Hasn't Slept," starring Stasey in the role she returned to for "Smile." The beauty of a film centered on a curse that can be passed on from person to person is that there are no limits in terms of returning for a sequel,...

Having earned over 200 million at the global box office, writer/director Parker Finn’s horror film Smile has now been given a digital release and is also available to watch on the Paramount+ streaming service in the US and Canada. With a new stage of release comes a new piece of promotion, as Paramount has unveiled a featurette that looks into the casting of Sosie Bacon (Charlie Says) as the film’s heroine. That featurette, which has a running time just under 2 minutes, can be seen at the bottom of this article.
Smile is based on Finn’s short film Laura Hasn’t Slept, which won the Special Jury Recognition Prize in SXSW’s Midnight Short category. Caitlin Stasey (Neighbours) played the title character in that short, and it seems like she might be reprising the role in Smile (briefly, judging by the marketing), making this a follow-up of sorts.

“Smile” is hitting Paramount+ this Tuesday.
The Paramount original horror film, which made its theatrical debut in September, follows a devoted therapist named Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) who begins having bizarre, frightening experiences after witnessing a traumatic incident involving one of her patients. This patient, played by Caitlin Stasey, describes to Dr. Cotter the visions she’s been seeing, which come to life in the form of an evil, scary grin that smiles back at her.
“If you’re haunted by visions of people smiling at you, but no one else sees them, the world is going to think you’re crazy, and much of the drama in ‘Smile’ revolves around Rose looking like a therapist who’s lost her mind,” Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote in his review.

Ready to “Smile?”
Paramount’s new original horror movie, about a “Ring”-style curse that passes from one person to another and involves horribly violent deaths and – surprise! – a big wide grin on your face, is here, and it’s a huge hit. “Smile,” which stars Sosie Bacon and Kyle Gallner, is super creepy and unsettling and grossed over 200 million at the box office.
But how do you watch the new movie? Read on to find out:
Is “Smile” in theaters or streaming?
“Smile” was released exclusively in movie theaters on Sept. 30, and this is honestly probably a good thing, as its effectiveness is directly related to the amount of teenagers screaming and throwing their popcorn around you. This is a real matinee-at-the-mall movie, in the best possible way. That said, it’ll be streaming very soon…
When will “Smile” be streaming on Paramount+?
“Smile” will be streaming on Paramount+ starting Nov.

[The following story contains spoilers for Smile.]
Smile may have been a nightmare for Sosie Bacon’s character, but the experience has been a dream come true for the actor.
The Parker Finn-directed horror film was not only Bacon’s first time atop the call sheet, but it was also her first number-one film at the domestic box office, grossing 22.6 million this past weekend. In Smile, Paramount’s sixth box office victor of 2022, Bacon’s character, Dr. Rose Cotter, inherits a supernatural curse from a patient who committed suicide in front of her, all while smiling in the most maniacal and disturbing manner.
Ultimately, Rose would not become a “final girl” per the genre’s convention, and Bacon is more than content with the outcome.
“I would’ve been more bummed out if this movie had a happy ending,” Bacon tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Parker Finn‘s Smile opened wide across the United States over the weekend, the film generating a whole lot of buzz on the internet not only with positive reviews but also a clever viral marketing campaign that brought the film’s creepy smilers out in the real world. That buzz, as we expected, has resulted in box office success for Paramount’s original horror movie.
Across 3,645 theaters, Smile opened to 22 million at the domestic box office over the weekend, instantly shooting the horror movie to the top of the box office charts. The number is even more impressive worldwide, with Smile to date scaring up 36.5 million thus far!
The reported production budget for Smile was 17 million, which means the film is well on its way to being profitable in just the first three days. Paramount is smiling wide right now.

As September transitioned into October this past weekend, Paramount Pictures released Parker Finn’s high-concept horror movie “Smile” into 3,650 theaters on Friday. The horror film starring Sosie Bacon, Kyle Gallner, Caitlin Stasey, Kal Penn, Jessie T. Usher and Rob Morgan took in 2 million in Thursday previews, leading to an estimated 8.2 million on Friday. “Smile” then became the only movie in the month of September to cross 20 million with an estimated three-day opening of 22 million, as it also became a rare horror film to bring in more business on Saturday than Thursday and Friday.
“Smile” went into the weekend with decent reviews and 75 on Rotten Tomatoes, but then received a “B-” CinemaScore, which is on par with Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling” and Ti West’s prequel, “Pearl.” Normally, that wouldn’t be a good sign for legs, although 20th Century’s “Barbarian” received a “C+” score and that did...
