Over the past few years, horror fans have enjoyed a rejuvenation of the slasher subgenre. Even more exciting is the fact that writers and directors are finding new and creative ways to make slasher movies fun. A great example of this is the body swap horror comedy Freaky (2020), written by Michael Kennedy and Christopher Landon and directed by Landon. Now Kennedy has written the time-travel Christmas slasher It’s a Wonderful Knife, directed by Tyler MacIntyre, who also directed the dark horror comedy Tragedy Girls (2017).
It’s a Wonderful Knife tells the story of teenager Winnie Carruthers, played by Jane Widdop (Yellowjackets), who saves her hometown of Angel Falls from an unhinged killer on Christmas Eve. A year later, struggling to cope with the events of the previous Christmas, Winnie wishes she had never been born and is mysteriously transported to a parallel universe where things are even worse than she could have ever imagined.

The first week of October is officially here, so it’s full steam ahead on the Halloween season from here on out. This week’s streaming picks embrace spooky season festivities by centering on holiday-themed horror movies that feature Halloween parties as their slaying grounds.
Some of these horror movies bring the fun, while others aim to spike your adrenaline. But all use Halloween parties as a centerpiece for the horror that’s unleashed within.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Cemetery of Terror – AMC+, Shudder
Rubén Galindo Jr.’s most prominent horror feature is the American-influenced Don’t Panic (available on Shudder), but the Halloween-centric Cemetery of Terror offers the most fun. A trio of college kids decides to impress their ladies by stealing a body from a morgue for a Halloween prank and party in an abandoned house.

Few American filmmakers of the last 40 years await a major rediscovery like Hal Hartley, whose traces in modern movies are either too-minor or entirely unknown. Thus it’s cause for celebration that the Criterion Channel are soon launching a major retrospective: 13 features (which constitutes all but My America) and 17 shorts, a sui generis style and persistent vision running across 30 years. Expect your Halloween party to be aswim in Henry Fool costumes.
Speaking of: there’s a one-month headstart on seasonal programming with the 13-film “High School Horror”––most notable perhaps being a streaming premiere for the uncut version of Suspiria, plus the rare opportunity to see a Robert Rodriguez movie on the Criterion Channel––and a retrospective of Hong Kong vampire movies. ‘Freddy vs. Jason’ 20 Years Later – The Ultimate Horror Battle Still Satisfies After All These Years
I was somewhat of a late bloomer when it came to my exposure to horror. I lacked the cool older relative or friend that seems to serve as a customary gateway for many genre fans. I had seen a few horror movies growing up (Child’s Play and Scream each terrified me at different points in my youth), but seeing Freddy vs. Jason at the tender age of 15 is single-handedly responsible for the horror fandom that has consumed my life ever since. Without the movie — which hit theaters 20 years ago today — I very likely wouldn’t be writing for Bloody Disgusting now.
I knew of Freddy and Jason through pop culture osmosis, but I hadn’t seen any of the combined 17 films that comprised the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th franchises when Freddy vs. Jason piqued my interest. Even with the advent of Netflix’s DVDs by mail,...

Exclusive: Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle Films is teaming with Copperheart Entertainment, producers of the Ginger Snaps trilogy of cult horror movies, on a TV series adaptation of the darkly comic tale of teenage sisterhood. The project is executive produced by John Fawcett, co-creator and director of the original film and co-creator and executive producer of BBC America’s award-winning series, Orphan Black.
Anna Ssemuyaba (Guerilla) will write the potential Ginger Snaps TV series, which tells the story of sisters, Ginger and Brigette, who are self-imposed outcasts in their hometown. Inseparable and fascinated with the macabre, they make a pact to escape their sleepy suburban home by sixteen or else take their own lives. But on the night of her first period, Ginger is attacked and infected by a werewolf which unleashes a monstrous kind of puberty. Brigette can’t understand this new version of her sister who is violent and sexual.

There has been more talk than ever about women in the film industry and in particular, directing movies. Being even more specific, female directors in the horror genre has been a hot topic of discussion lately after Jason Blum’s comments on the subject. So, you’ve guessed it, Blue My Mind comes from a female director by the name of Lisa Bruhlmann. And as her first feature film, it’s a very impressive debut. It’s a hard film to review in that the little you know about the movie the better, and I am going to write this spoiler-free because I would love people to watch Blue My Mind knowing very little about it like I did.

A slew of recent genre films, most of them helmed by women, have proven once and for all that fantastical stories are the perfect conduit for empathy. By placing the viewer in a bizarre situation, making them “feel for” a character becomes organic—who wouldn’t be terrified to find their body changing in some grotesque way? Lisa Brühlmann takes this principle to an unusually beautiful height in her debut feature film, Blue My Mind.
Screening last weekend as part of the 2018 Overlook Film Festival, Brühlmann introduces us to Mia (Luna Wedler), a 15-year-old girl who struggles to adjust to a new school after her distant father forces them to move. As she skips class to prove herself to the cool kids and butts heads with her parents, she realizes that her body’s puberty process is far from normal. She attempts to hide the changes from her parents, friends,...

From his work on Ginger Snaps and Final Destination 3 to more recent projects such as Extraterrestrial and Ghost Wars, actor Jesse Moss has been a constant source of reliable performances in the horror genre, and his role as a first-time father in the supernatural thriller Still/Born is certainly no exception. With Still/Born coming to theaters and VOD platforms beginning February 9th, Daily Dead had the pleasure of catching up with Moss for a new Q&A feature, and in addition to discussing the character-centric story of Still/Born, Moss also reflected on the enduring love for the cult favorite Ginger Snaps.

When it comes to genre-related, female-centric coming-of-age stories, there are always certain movies that will undoubtedly be brought up in the conversation: Carrie, Ginger Snaps, The Company of Wolves, and The Craft being older examples, and more recent offerings like Jennifer’s Body, It Follows, and Raw have also brought new perspectives into the fold as well. And with so many thought-provoking takes on this well-worn cinematic trope already in existence, it may seem like there’s no real new territory to traverse here.
But then along comes Joachim Trier’s Thelma, which recently premiered at Tiff and is currently screening as part of the 2017 Fantastic Fest, to show us that this well-worn terrain is still fertile enough to cull for some new ideas. Anchored by a beautifully nuanced performance from Eili Harboe, Thelma is a masterful exploration of religious suppression and sexual awakening, melding together into a superhero origin...

A vegetarian student craves human flesh in Julia Ducournau’s prize-winning Raw, The Sense of an Ending is a bloodless affair, and Huppert sings
Last year I was on a film festival jury that wound up, after several hours of finicky deliberation, giving our top prize to Julia Ducournau’s coming-of-cannibalistic-age nightmare Raw (Universal, 18). It was, to all of us, an unexpected vote of consensus for a film that seduces through repulsion. “What have we approved?” a fellow juror asked me with a grin as we delivered our verdict. Ducournau’s debut lands on screen like a live, throbbing heart plucked from its housing chest, wrapped in rose-coloured satin instead of butcher’s paper.
It doesn’t take long for a grisly grindhouse soul to emerge from its gleaming exterior. As the rituals of campus hazing take their dizzying toll on her, vegetarian veterinary student Justine (Garance Marillier) finds within...

Julia Ducournau's Raw arrives in UK cinemas - and here's our review...

See related Better Call Saul season 3: new clip teases returning character Better Call Saul season 2 episode 10 review: Klick The subtle rise of good prequels
Despite the visceral, sensational and exploitable qualities of the subject, there are surprisingly few movies about cannibalism. I'm sure the film industry, not to mention the voracious appetites of the horror audience, could take a whole lot more.
Nonetheless, I did still manage to come out of Julia Ducournau's Raw thinking, and being disappointed to think, that much of what I had just seen seemed overly familiar. In at least the broader narrative strokes, as outlined in above, there wasn't really anything...

The Fits is only in a few UK cinemas, but heck, it's worth seeking out...
Coming of age stories are a dime a dozen. Scattered across every genre and decade, growing up is one of the most constant sources of inspiration for filmmakers. The Fits - the feature debut of writer/director Anna Rose Holmer - is a coming of age drama, but not as you know it.
The film follows Toni (Royalty Hightower - definitely worth keeping track of), an 11-year-old tomboy we first meet working out with her older brother in the boxing gym. She soon discovers another world within the community centre, one in which the Lionesses - a group of competitive dancers - exist.
Immediately transfixed, Toni joins the Lionesses’ ranks and, despite being out of her depth amidst the aggression, precision and sexual power of the older girls, befriends Beezy (Alexis Neblett), one of the other new recruits.

For her solo directorial debut, French filmmaker Julia Ducournau explores the horrors of identity and sexuality with Raw, her unapologetically ferocious coming-of-age tale that’s brutal and unnerving, with notes of pitch-black comedy coursing through its veins. It’s not unusual to see genre tropes used as allegorical material for the awfulness that comes with growing up, but the way Raw presents these themes in such an unapologetic and unforgiving manner makes Ducournau’s first feature something wholly unique and not to be missed.
Becoming an adult sucks—a lesson that Justine (Garance Marillier) learns very early on once she arrives as a freshman at a veterinary school in Raw, following in the footsteps of both her parents and her willful sister, Alexia (Ella Rumpf). You know it's a good horror movie -- or at least a properly revolting one -- when people faint while watching it, and that's just what happened at the Toronto Film Festival last night when "multiple audience members" passed out during the film's premiere screening (via The Hollywood Reporter). "An ambulance had to be called to the scene as the film became too much for a couple patrons," said the film's marketer Ryan Werner, who is having a great day. Lest you think this is merely a clever publicity ploy on the part of distributor Focus World, more than one attendee at last night's screening -- including Girls on Film co-host Alicia Malone -- corroborated the account on Twitter: Raw: super cool, grisly, fun, fresh, gross French horror by badass female filmmaker. Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

High schools have seen their share of monsters in the movies, be they werewolves (Teen Wolf, I Was a Teenage Werewolf, Ginger Snaps), vampires (Twilight, My Best Friend is a Vampire), aliens (The Faculty), or just your average, garden-shear variety slasher (Prom Night, Scream, etc.). You might think that the 1987 horror film Zombie High attempts to bring the undead to the high school hallway. You would be wrong. For proof, check out Scream Factory’s new Blu-ray of Zombie High, which isn’t really a zombie movie and is barely even a horror film.

"Lose your innocence... or lose your life." In October, Scream Factory announced the upcoming high-definition release of the cult horror film Cherry Falls, and now they have revealed new cover art for the movie and marked March 29th, 2016 as the film's Blu-ray debut date.
From Scream Factory: "Happy Monday everyone! Check out the new cover art for Cherry Falls that will be on our upcoming blu-ray release next year and comes courtesy of illustrator Joel Robinson (Nightbreed, Ginger Snaps, The Serpent and the Rainbow). Official street date is March 29th. Expect bonus material to be announced sometime in February. Note: If you pre-order the release directly through us @ https://www.shoutfactory.com/film...

Official street date is March 29th. Expect bonus material to be announced sometime in February. Note: If you pre-order the release directly through us @ https://www.shoutfactory.com/film...

It’s not often you can sit down to watch a werewolf movie and say you were truly surprised by what you saw. I think the last time I can recall feeling the same way was upon seeing Ginger Snaps for the first time. But I can honestly say I was totally surprised by Wer. Even more so given that this film was written and directed by William Brent Bell, the man behind the godawful found footage horror The Devil Inside!
When something slaughters a family camping in the French countryside, the freakishly large and powerful Talan Gwynek (Brian Scott O’Connor) is arrested for the crime. While as his public defender Kate (A.J. Cook) argues his case, she begins to...

It could have done so well. All of the pieces seemed to be in place for something special. With two very popular actresses in Amanda Seyfried and Megan Fox, Diablo Cody coming off an Oscar win for her Juno screenplay, and early press inviting comparisons to cult-favorite Ginger Snaps (2000), Jennifer’s Body (2009) was set to be one of the hits of early fall. 20th Century Fox, or rather the now-defunct Fox Atomic, even exploited Fox’s sex appeal in advertising, and at that time, if there were any truth to the old adage that ‘sex sells,’ then this film would have hit an adolescent goldmine – which would have meant good business for 20th Century Fox, given the film’s $16 million budget.
It didn’t pan out like most would have suspected. The film never found its audience, practically limping its way through its theatrical run and finishing with $31.6 million. Critics...
