It's just after 6 p.m. on a Friday, and Duff's – a noisy heavy-metal bar adorned with autographed memorabilia and jagged-looking instruments in Williamsburg, Brooklyn – has just opened its doors to the sober, work-weary masses. In the center of the room, a woman clad in a black dress and high heels is headbanging atop a carpet adorned with Iron Maiden's corpse-mascot Eddie. The music is "Bleed," an angular, machine-gun–like aural assault that's little over seven minutes long, by Swedish extreme-metal growlers Meshuggah. Bargoers sip their beer in the back,...

I’m thrilled to introduce the first episode of an ongoing new podcast called GeekTyrant Audio, where we put the focus on the artists behind the music of the TV shows and films that we love.
Charlie Clouser is the composer of Resident Evil: Extinction, the Saw franchise, Wayward Pines, Childhood’s End, and also wrote the opening theme to American Horror Story. Those works follow a long-running music career as a member of Nine Inch Nails, and a collaborator with A Perfect Circle, Puscifer, White Zombie, Rammstein, Type O Negative, Fuel. He has even collaborated with Marilyn Manson and David Bowie.
In this debut episode of GeekTyrant Audio, we discuss how Clouser created the gorgeous, atmospheric, and occasionally creepy, dread-inducing soundscapes for Childhood’s End and Wayward Pines. We discuss how he learned a lot from his years of work alongside Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails, Gone Girl, and...

Strange & Norrell closes with a terrific finale. Are we likely to see anything as imaginative and accomplished as it again soon? Unlikely…
This review contains spoilers.
1.7 Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
By the Raven King’s silky tresses, that was a class act.
Start to finish, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell did an improbable number of things right. The story and dialogue darted along, the direction never failed to impress or the special effects to convince, and the cast… well, that cast. Can we put the whole team under an enchantment binding them together forever? Until they reunite to expertly spin us another tale, Sunday nights on BBC One should be left empty as a mark of respect, like the favourite restaurant table of a beloved departed guest.
Last week’s belter of a penultimate episode had left things on an ominous note. We’d been led to expect a magical duel in the finale,...

Pete Kowalsky is a very interesting character. A mainstay of the Florida Metal/Hardcore scene, he is best known as the vocalist/songwriter for Remembering Never, but is also notable for being the current vocalist for the band xBishopx, formerly known as xBishopx, which lyrically, focuses on the Straight Edge lifestyle.
He is known for being very opinionated and outspoken; he has hard line views on many issues that affect us all, whether we like it or not. He has written angry and thought provoking songs on matters such as animal cruelty, the meat trade, gay rights, faceless art critics, gay rights and much much more. If you thought Rage Against the Machine was as angry as politically motivated music gets, then you really haven’t listened to a Remembering Never record.
They have three full lengths, and are about to release their first in 7 years.

Formed in 2011 by Sal Abruscato, co-founder (with the late, great Peter Steele) of the gothic metal giant Type O Negative and drummer on many of Type O's most legendary releases like Bloody Kisses, A Pale Horse Named Death carries over many of that band's themes of gloom, doom and darkness... and death, obviously. Sal joined forces with Matt Brown, guitarist for Seventh Void, in a partnership he described as a “murdering evil version of Lennon and McCartney,” and the colossal result was the band's debut album And Hell Will Follow Me. Accompanied by an ominously beautiful art booklet created by acclaimed artist Sam Shearon (whose credits include illustrations for H.P. Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu and promo art for Rob Zombie and Kiss), that record was a haunting showcase of low, heavy and horror-infused hard rock with a classic horror vibe. While the lyrical themes were steeped in grand-scale horror imagery,...

You may know Myke Hideous from the bands The Empire Hideous, SpySociety99, The Misfits and The Bronx Casket Co. He also wrote an autobiography about his life and times in the music industry, King Of An Empire To The Shoes Of A Misfit.
Director Pawl Bazile’s film Living the American Nightmare was released in 2011. The documentary tells Myke’s story in the industry through interviews with fellow musicians.
There’s been a bit of drama surrounding this documentary. Pawl Bazile had this to say about Myke’s interviews in the film:
“One of the funniest aspects of the film is how seriously Myke Hideous takes himself in comparison to the other guys in his band. And when you see that, and as the film cuts back and forth, you see the other guys are really light-hearted about everything and then Myke is staring at the camera intently and pointing his finger.

I watch horror movies, pretty much nonstop, all year long. Every October, though, I kick it into overdrive beginning at the first of the month. There’s something about the fact that horror movies are readily available on TV, regardless of whether or not they’re censored for content. Even if I have a movie on DVD/Blu Ray, I’ll still watch it from beginning to end if I see it on AMC or one of the other stations celebrating the holiday. I have no idea why. As big as my archive is, I can pretty much watch whatever horror movie I want, on-demand, and uncensored. I just can’t help it. If mainstream television stations wish to celebrate the season, I’m going to participate in their celebration.
All of that said, there are certain films that have become a ritual for me each season. More often than not,...

Over the course of his still young career, Justin Bieber has managed to appeal to people across a number of different genre lines. His ubiquity in the pop world is undeniable, and he is continuously picking up credibility in the R&B and hip-hop worlds as well (thanks to a number of key collaborations and endorsements). However, it's unlikely that Bieber will appeal to the metal community any time soon, though that could certainly change when the Super Bowl rolls around. Bieber will appear alongside Ozzy Osbourne in an advertisement for Best Buy that will air during the big game on Sunday night, February 6. The content of the ad is being kept under wraps, but it marks the first time that Bieber will be teaming up with Osbourne and will certainly make for unlikely bedfellows for both of them.

The New York Times released an online hodgepodge of musicians we lost during 2010, and have omitted three major losses during the year that should anger metalheads across the Earth. In their year review, the Times has snubbed Ronnie James Dio (Black Sabbath, Dio), Peter Steele (Type O Negative), and Paul Gray (Slipknot).
You can view the New York Times montage over at their site if you can be bothered. I'm not embedding it here, because for my part, I'm disgusted they've overlooked three significant musicians -- presumably just because they're from the metal genre. The grounds upon which I make this assumption are that there is no metal whatsoever in their "tribute." Rock, Soul, Pop, R&B, Hip Hop, Post-Punk are all included in the company of Funk, Disco, and others. Metal (and related genres) are nowhere to be seen [...]...

2010 was one wacky up-and-down year in the horror domain… and definitely a head-scratcher in the world of music. Sadly, music's darker side weathered some losses this year, including metal legend Ronnie James Dio, Type O Negative's Peter Steele, Paul Gray from Slipknot and Peter Christopherson of Coil. But while we miss them and the sinister sounds they could have made, we're actually here to point out some of the good times in the wild and weird world of music during the past twelve moons. Whether it's horror cinema soundscapes, splattery music videos, epic metal masterpieces or gothic power-pop grooves, the year had a little something for all of us late-night listeners. It's a sad day for metal fans. Peter Steele, the frontman for Type O Negative, is dead at 48 from an apparent heart failure. The goth-metal band formed in the early '90s and they were a fixture for me at parties throughout my time in high school. One of my close friends used to play the excellent Black Sabbath tribute album, "Nativity in Black," over and over again; Steele's take on Ozzy in "Black Sabbath" will forever be burned into my brain.
Type O was also a frequent contributor to horror films throughout the mid/late-'90s and early '00s. The most memorable for me is "Mortal Kombat," which featured the song "Blood and Fire (Out of the Ashes Remix)." Not exactly horror, but there are definitely shades of the genre there. As news of his death continues to spread, friends and fans of towering Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele remembered the man with the black sense of humor, even blacker sense of fashion and a bellow that resonated for more than two decades.
"We have lost several artists over the years, but this is a biggie — this one hurts the most," Roadrunner Records A&R man Monte Conner, who first signed the band to the label in 1989, said in a statement posted Thursday (April 15). "Not just because Peter was a great, great guy, but he figures so prominently in the history of this company. He was a tortured soul for most of his life, and certainly for the entire time we all knew him.

Peter Steele of heavy metal band Type O Negative has died of heart failure at age 48. Steele (born Petrus Ratajczyk), the burly 6'7" bassist and lead vocalist of the Brooklyn goth-metal band, formed Type O in the early '90s after stints in several other groups, including the hardcore act Carnivore.
A spokesperson for Type O bandmates Kenny Hickey and Johnny Kelly confirmed the report to MTV News on Thursday (April 15). And according to CBS News, band manager Mike Renault sent an e-mail saying, "Peter passed away last night. As of now it appears to have been heart failure. That's all the details we have right now."
The band's most recent label, Spv/Steamhammer Records, issued an online statement about Steele's passing. "It's with great sadness that we...

Dread caught up with director Adam Gierasch yesterday in an effort to ascertain the current plans for his feature Night of the Demons, a flick that initially was to have received a theatrical release last October via Seven Arts Distribution. Revealed the director, who co-wrote with Jace Anderson his remake of director Kevin Tenney’s 1988 feature of the same name, “Night of the Demons is aiming for a decently-wide release on September 23, 2010.” In addition, he provided us with some new exclusive production stills!
Gierasch was coy about mentioning the distributor of his redux, which stars Diora Baird, Shannon Elizabeth, Monica Keena, Bobbi Sue Luther, Jonathan Beach, Michael Copon, Tiffany Shepis, and Edward Furlong, although he was transparent in regard to his additional (and rather exciting) plans for the release of Night of the Demons.

If you’re into metal or hardcore, chances are you have a Hatebreed record in your collection. Known for their crushing live shows and tireless efforts, the band has been a fixture in heavy music for the past fifteen years. With a growing following based on a mutual loyalty and respect between the band and their audience, the Grammy-nominated band closes out 2009 with a hit album on a new label, energized by their return to independence.
At the center of all things Hatebreed is Jamey Jasta - the multi-tasking frontman not only of Hatebreed, but also of Kingdom Of Sorrow and Icepick. Balancing music with running his own label Stillborn Records, and a clothing line called Hatewear without ever seeming spread too thin, Jasta has his sights set on conquering even more frontiers in the near future.

After an intolerable and stress-inducing bi-week hiatus, The Vampire Diaries came back to us like a vamp to a love slave and my wrist was stretched out for more. The magazines and websites claimed that last night’s episode, “Haunted”, was going to change the game of the show, but despite the goodies and shocks we got last night, I felt like I had tasted a little bit of bad blood. But I don’t care. I really don’t. Why? Well for starters, the performances last night were phenomenal across the board. If nobody felt moved at all by any of the emotional scenes last night, then you might want to check your pulse. Secondly, the episode was co-written by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, the executive producers of the show, as well as Andrew Kreisberg who wrote the story. Thirdly, the episode was directed by Ernest Dickenson; an...

Greetings Fango Fiends! It's time once again for another installment of Fangoria Musick's Lists Of Doom - the column where we track down some of your favorite (or soon-to-be favorite) bands to get their thoughts on on the world of horror, and which films scare them.
For our 28th installment we caught up with Ari - vocalist/guitarist of Des Moines' Destrophy. One of the Midwest's hardest-working bands, Destrophy's self-titled album (and first for Victory Records) will hit retail on October 26th. So what scares Ari? Great White Sharks? Satanic Children? Nuclear Man?
Find out below!
1. An American Werewolf In London (1981), Director: John Landis.
Definitely my favorite werewolf incarnation- more like bear-wolf! Actually the Nazi ghouls might have scared me more than anything.
2. The Exorcist III (1990), Director: William Peter Blatty.
The scene in the hospital. A full minute of silence. Best scare ever.
3. Alien (1979), Director: Ridley Scott.

Cleveland, Ohio’s pioneering rock vaudeville act Mushroomhead fresh off a successful summer trek with Hed(pe) and Straight Line Stitch, as well as dates on Mayhem Festival resume recording at their Filthy Hands Studio. Their 7th studio album will be completed this fall for a 2010 release via Megaforce/Sony Music. Produced by co-founding member and drummer Steve “Skinny” Felton, the band promises this will be their most ferocious and ruthless sound to date! The band recently released their “Vol. 2” DVD last year which debut at #7 in Billboard’s “Top Music Videos” chart.
In the meantime the band will debut a new song called “Your Soul Is Mine” to be released on the upcoming Saw VI movie soundtrack available everywhere on October 20. Back for the sixth installment of the Saw horror series this Halloween (in theaters October 23), moviegoers will once again cringe in their seats as blood, guts and body parts are up for grabs.

Cradle of Filth is a band we've covered at length on Fangoria Musick, and tonight we received word that the band will soon release a coffee table book entitled The Gospel Of Filth, penned by music journalist Gavin Baddeley (Dissecting Marilyn Manson, Lucifer Rising) and CoF frontman Dani Filth.
The "all encompassing compendium of all things dark and taboo" will appropriately see a release on Halloween.
Full details below the jump!
Official PR:
For decades, music writers have been penning tell-all artist biographies and their personal interpretation of rock history. But on Halloween 2009, Fab Press will unleash a book that takes readers on a much deeper and darker journey into the inspirations behind the world of rock music.
The history of Cradle of Filth is but the linchpin that ties the expansiveness of The Gospel of Filth together. With over 500 pages of content, the book reveals the unspoken and debaucherous...

"Hello... I want to play a game," those are the immortal words Saw's sadistic purveyor of self-imposed twisted justice Jigsaw utters to his victims as they come to. And if you hear those words you're soon to find yourself in a world of hurt. Back for the sixth installment of the Saw horror series this Halloween (in theaters October 23), moviegoers will once again cringe in their seats as blood, guts and body parts are up for grabs.
In Saw VI, Special Agent Strahm is dead, and Detective Hoffman has emerged as the unchallenged successor to Jigsaw's legacy. However, when the FBI draws closer to Hoffman, he is forced to set a game into motion, and Jigsaw's grand scheme is finally understood.
What started out as a "little" indie horror movie back in 2004 has turned into a juggernaut go-for-the-throat franchise so gruesome you want to turn away, yet so compelling you just can't.

In the past few days, much has been made of the size of Madonna's biceps. Are they too big? Is that healthy? How did they get like that? No matter what the solution, one thing is for certain: Madonna could probably throw a pretty good chokehold on a would-be assailant.
But Madonna is hardly the only musician walking around with VIP tickets to the gun show. In fact, a number of rockers and rappers have committed themselves to keeping themselves jacked up — some more dramatic than others. 50 Cent kept himself ripped and his shirt off for most of his early career, making his muscles a part of his persona. But some people sneak up on you — remember when Timbaland all of a sudden got into weightlifting, or when you realized that Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails had become gigantic? Seriously, that guy could use his triceps to smash open walnuts.

Somewhere out there, under the stars, someone is taking Type O Negative’s music seriously. I know it’s hard to believe, but it happens every day around us and we never know until it’s too late. Even more unbeknownst to many, there are legions of people suffering from ‘Type O’ addiction -or ’October Dust,’ as it’s drug-like propensities are more commonly known --all over the world. Signs usually include a proclivity to refer to things as ‘Goth,’ and people as ‘Elder Goths,’ as well as a penchant for flowing black velvet and lank black hair. The rate of recovery versus recidivism is low, and despite aggressive applications of Radical Emotive Behavior Therapy, most of these addicts never recover; living half-lives devoted to Live Action Role Playing and… music journalism. Amongst those lost and damned souls, there lurks an even more sinister following -composing the backbone of Type-o’s army,...
